"sounds a little muffled" welcome to the world of sludge metal boys
Jonathon Gordon This is sludge metal?
Jake Herington This album is pretty hard to define, but overall Id say its sludge metal. Definitely not completely, as this album is where their proggy tendencies really started showing, but more sludge than anything else
Jake Herington Not knocking anyone else’s opinion, this is just my own, but I wouldn’t consider this sludge at all. I’d consider most of the Take as Needed for Pain album by EyeHateGod as the defecto sludge album, with varying degrees of “sludge” available on either side of the spectrum.
sludge metal doesn't have to have this bad "wall of sound" production, it's similar to what baroness does and it really hurts the music imo.
@@middle-agedguitarnoob8878 Leviathan is sludge... Not like Thou or Coven, but definitely sludge.
I am glad that they are being as honest as they can instead of trying to impress people
As much as i love metal, Oblivion would have been a MUCH better song for them to react to.
Asleep In the Deep I think would go over much better with these guys. The Stoner Metal sound is hard to get used to because it sounds very muffled and has a very constant full sound (not much dynamic). I don't think they'd like Oblivion much either because of that, it doesn't have as much space as Asleep in the Deep
The drumming of this song is insane. The whole record is a battle till death. Mastodon is a jewel.
That snare production is legendary.
They truly are!
Listen to Oblivion by Mastodon, it's a much more accessible song, defiantly easier to listen to and you guys would like it much more
Pantera - Domination
Given your tastes so far, I think you'll really like this one.
Luke Hall yes great idea and song.
Either Domination or Cemetery Gates. They'll love both.
Cemetery gates by pantera
Heavy Metal head Dont forget Mouth of War
Not gonna lie. I was sad you guys didn’t get the feeling of this song the way it grabbed me 10 years ago, but i really love and appreciate your openness and willingness to the colorful world of metal.
The twitter pole says Blood and Thunder, but everyone in the comments had it right. Oblivion is much, much more representative of the contemporary Mastodon. Y'all kept saying this groove sounded like everything else but everyone normally says Mastodon is super different - if not weird. Hope y'all give Oblivion a chance.
The problem is that people are picking THEIR favorite songs when it comes to the polls you guys put up. They should be voting for something a little more accessible since these guys don’t know anything about the band and are trying to get into metal.
Yes, so basically nothing from the first two albums ("Call of the Matodon" included)
Exactly! Nd thats what people seem to forget. I want to see then react to slayers "angel of death" but i know theres no way in hell theyre ever gonna jam out to that lol but i will say i was very surprised to see them react to "Raining blood"
I don't think I would put it as them trying to get into metal. It's more like them appreciating it and the effort of the type of music whilst giving it a truly unbiased reaction. I do see them enjoying it more though.
I definitely see these two dudes trying to appreciate metal. But when you consider their experience with metal up to this point, I think you'd want to expose them to the most accessible metal possible. Otherwise, it's just white noise. Baby steps.
Oblivion is probably a better intro to Mastodon really
REVOisMYname They instantly became my favourite band first time I heard it
I like Oblivion, Sleeping Giant a lot too
Seriously? Mastodon, Nevermore, Vektor or Gojira aren't easy bands for begginers too
First mastodon song i heard and i think their best work on that album
Oblivion got my dad into mastodon, a guy that previously only like indy and grunge
mastodon is quite an unusual band. the more you listen the more it grows on you. initially there is something captivating about their approach to creating these sonic tapestries. so it's satisfying to hear the originality but also a blow to the ego/mind
Yeah I didn't get it when I was younger but now that my sensibilities moved away from pop and singles mastodon is one of my favorites
I wish Oblivion won! More melodic. It's more what you guys like and just a little foreshadowing 3 of the 4 band members sing. Great song. :)
I love this song but I approach the honest reaction. Most reaction channels wouldn’t upload it unless they liked the song but that’s why I like you guys. Honest opinions and free thinkers
I'll echo what many are saying, listen to Oblivion by Mastodon. I dont know what it is that people throw songs at you guys that arent the best "entry level" tracks to a band, I'll always go back to people suggesting Metropolis over Pull Me Under for Dream Theatre (which you should react to)
Also a bit surprised by the criticism of the main riff. I think it's a bonafide classic metal riff with a lot of character. Part of it's charisma is that it does sound familiar while still being very original, which is something that's harder to do that may seem. I was sure the main criticism would be directed at the vocals, which are definitely Mastodon's weak point, IMO, although they make it work with their brand of music. That steams from them starting their professional career without an actual trained vocalist.
PANTERA cemetery gates please
Zane Lowe Floods, Tens and Underground in America, and of course Primal Concrete Sledge
Michael Wright there awesome bro but if these guys want to hear pantera they have got to listen to cemetery gates
dude theyre not going to do EVERY song , have them do just the best one: Cemetary Gates
You would like Oblivion much more than Blood and Thunder, because this one is for more hardcore metalfans who like not complex but heavy riff and use this kind of song (blood and thunder like) just to headbang and get some energy! You are not Metalheads, so if you seek for some melody or more creative riffs, give Mastodon second chance with another song (Oblivion for example), cause they make very different music, from this Blood and thunder to some very melodic stuff like new Cold Dark Place EP
Germain St-Pierre same, dude, I actually was alternative music fan, but then I listened to Metallica, slayer, and then Pantera, now I m metalhead ) love all of mastodon though, melodic and more hardcore too
Well said Carl.
Motorhead are one of the legends that you have not reacted to yet "Ace of Spades" would be a good place to start.
Ross Johnson or Overkill
Classic but boring
Ryan/George - these are Motörhead's most accessible/famous songs, and i'd say, best:
♤ Ace of Spades
♤ Overkill
♤ Bomber
♤ Stone Dead Forever
♤ Too Late Too Late
♤ The Hammer
Pretty sure the muffled sound is simply that the RUclips video you are using was uploaded with sub par sound quality. Mastodon's albums have great production.
Most of music clips on youtube usually have best quality is 480kbs and the lowest is 132kbs
So it's most of music clips sometime sound maffled.
The elitists definitely dropped the ball with the poll results. Oblivion is much more to your tastes in my opinion based on your thoughts of this song and other prog metal songs you’ve liked. It’s totally different!
I hear what you're saying, and I agree with you for the most part. But, is the goal to have the guys love every song suggested just so people can say "yay, they love a song that I love, too"...?
PANTERA - Cemetery Gates!!!!!!
Hitting my 36th birthday tonight, my wife and I love, love your videos. Tool - The Pot. My addition.
Happy Birthday sir! We appreciate the support from you and your wife!
Yes - Tool, The Pot. Excellent choice. For Mastodon neophytes I would have used something more recent like Black Tongue, Motherload or even Highroad. They’re not has hard as their earlier stuff but they’ve always had issues with vocals on their studio albums
Happy Birthday! Great choice of song by the way.
The drummer is not espectacular?!?!?! WTF?!?!?
Brann Dailor is the God of Fills.
Thought the same... Brann Dailor is just different, of course spectacular
Brann is a lot more refined now than he was back in 2004.
Do Mastodon - Oblivion, the style is very different than this one.
Check out Mastodon - Oblivion. COMPLETELY different.
Madrid in has professed so much over the years. Now that the vocals are passed around!!!
Ghost Cirice !!!
evlve They should probably start with Square Hammer. I think it might have a little more of a bouncy beat.
WHY WOULD ANYONE START THEM OFF WITH THIS from Mastodon? Are some of you constantly high?
GeekFurious agree....bad choice
Thank you.
Agreed. Wtf.. Mastodon has a shit load of more ear friendly songs for a growing metal ears.
Igornopolis this reaction hurt my heart
Agreed.
Please react to Oblivion too! since it was such a close race. I guarantee you'll like it much more
Yeah I would say if they don't like Oblivion they are just not gonna like Mastodon.
yes oblivion you guys would like way better
For sure. I love Mastodon but this is a bad choice for the first song of theirs to listen to.
I think maybe this was too "average metal" of a song to be introduced to for Mastodon. The entire album is a concept based on Captain Ahab & Moby Dick, and the album is much more impactful from beginning to end. Consider K-Dot's GKMC, I think taking in the album as a whole with the story beats any individual song on the album itself.
Mastodon has some of the most unique guitar riffs (and incredible drumming) of any modern metal band, this song just doesn't really portray that side of them and is more "average metal" in its composition.
Yeah, this is more of a straightforward song to kick off the album. Once you get to Seabeast the album really kicks off.
Divinations.....that is all I have to say.
Yeah I would also add that this is on the heavier end of what they have made. Over time they started singing more instead of screaming and they have a more melodic sound as well.
Perhaps Iron Tusk would have been a better pick of this album.
I think Oblivion would have been a better choice for you guys. Its a more melodic and I think you would have enjoyed it more. Keep putting out the great videos! I really enjoy watching you guys experience these songs for the first time, and break them down.
Gojira - Born in Winter and The Art of Dying
These ones for sure
Aaron Smolar born in winter 👌
Much love and congrats on the 200k! I still have no idea how this song won the poll. It's a good song but you guys deserve to hear the real shit. Obvlivion is like their magnum opus.
Ivan Campos My thoughts exactly!
Oblivion!!! DEAL!
its so frustrating that blood and thunder won the poll when its one of their most basic and generic songs not showcasing any of their real talents
even if you don't do a review, just listen to it.
I like Oblivion but I think there's a few better songs on their most recent
I think that at some point you should give Mastodon another go. Their more recent music is MUCH different than their previous works, and I feel as if you would enjoy it much more. They are one of the few bands that has mixed pop music and metal well and its incredibly interesting to hear. Recommendations would be Oblivion (which many believe to be their best song) or Steambreather (which has a slight funky vibe which I feel you guys would enjoy). Even if you decide not to, stay awesome and continue delivering honest opinions on songs, even if I nor the rest of your audience may agree with them.
I love Oblivion, but I can't even imagine anyone considering it their best song. Other than that I agree with everything else you said, and these guys should definitely give them another chance.
I really hope you guys see my comment since I never comment on videos and you are like the only channel I actively subscribe to and look forward to watching your videos but this is the worst song to get people into their music. For a fan of Mastodon, this is a classic song that got them notoriety. Nowadays, their stuff is a lot more proggy and their singing has improved, not to mention they have 3 singers in the band and have grown to know how to utilize each one of their voices to play to their strengths. Hell, one of the singers is the drummer which is extremely difficult to do with how intricate his drumming has become. I highly suggest you check out Steambreather off their latest album that is up for a Grammy. Most of that song is the drummer singing and it's one of their catchiest songs on the CD in my opinion.
Oblivion would've been the better option to start out with because it shows their strengths a whole lot better than this classic song that fans love to mosh to. I've tried getting people into Mastodon with this song and it usually turns them off. It's a lot easier with one of their more melodic songs like Oblivion or Steambreather.
But anywho, you guys were spot on when saying the song was about Moby Dick. There's another song on the album called I Am Ahab and it is a themed album, as most of their albums are. I was very disappointed in the fact that your other fans voted on songs for you guys to review that I knew wouldn't show their best attributes as a band. I think for both Mastodon and Opeth, the fans picked the wrong starter songs and you guys need to choose other songs by them because it doesn't necessarily show their precision and technicality as well as some of the fan favorites. I've seen both Mastodon and Opeth live 3 times each and I believe they both are a couple of the top acts in prog metal.
Next time, try doing a poll for these sorts of bands and picking one that didn't win but was up there in rank. That's probably the best way to find something you'll like because the real fans will pick something more obscure that they know you'll enjoy. Kind of like how you guys did with the Ne Obliviscaris review. I never got into them until I saw your video and other believe that picking the most popular song doesn't necessarily mean that it's the artist's best song to show you their talent.
Please go back and look at your polls and do another review of both Mastodon and Opeth using one of the songs that's maybe in 4th or 5th or something. That way you'll probably find something something that is probably more to your liking.
Also because I saw Mastodon, Opeth, and Gojira last May, I'm going to suggest a couple more songs you'll probably like from Gojira. Try listening to The Gift Of Guilt, Born In Winter, or L'Enfant Sauvage. Both are amazing songs that you'll definitely love! Keep being awesome you guys! Absolutely love your videos! Rap, rock, metal, you name it, I like it. Except country... country is horrible with the exception of some old country like Johnny Cash or others like him. Ok enough rambling. I would love to see a response or at least see you guys do some other Mastodon or Opeth reviews.
Rasputin Reincarnated your comment is spot on here. I was super bummed this song won the Twitter polls. I get people into metal all the time and never would've picked this song. Steambreather is epic or Oblivion would've sufficed. As for Opeth, they outta pull from the Watershed album and pick a clean vocals song or something more concise like the Lotus Eater.
Dustin Ruth I definitely agree that the next song that they play from Opeth should involve clean vocals, even to go as far as having then listen to anything off of the Damnation album to get the exact opposite side of Opeth than what they heard. Also, the fact that Ghost of Perdition was picked by the fans over Deliverance was just a piss poor choice. If you go with heavy, go all in with the song they play at almost every show they play! Not to mention that Deliverance does have some more clean vocals in it (I think anyway) which also makes it a better choice. Don't get me wrong, I love Ghost of Perdition. Ghost Reveries was the first Opeth CD I got so it does have a special place in my heart but it just wasn't the best choice to make. It doesn't necessarily make for the best introductory song.
Rasputin Reincarnated, I agree with your comment here. This is also my 1st time commenting commenting on any video ever. Ive followed the metal review/reaction series here for a while. Its such an awesome series, and I enjoy seeing these guys do their thing. In my 22 years of listening to metal, Ive come to appreciate Mastodon deeply for their creative achievements in general. Blood and Thunder has always been a major favorite of mine across the board. This song carries a certain appeal stylistically that speaks to multiple harsher sub genres of metal that Mastodon drew more from on their Remission release, and here on Leviathan they still retain a lot of those different fuzzy Lo-Fi elements you see (and hear) often in those types of Scenes.
They certainly have evolved in ways I see described in many of these comments, and I have enjoyed very much following their career arc and witnessing all the various explorations they have pursued in their creative journeys.
I first obtained the Leviathan album when it was released in 2004. At the time, its was an anticipated release due to success of Remission. if the Brothers here listened to that album, they would likely feel it was even more harsh and less enjoyable, no doubt. But perhaps the Elitists, those hardcore listeners that enjoyed Mastodon's earlier releases such as Remission and Leviathan, may have come to distain some of their more mainstream later releases, many of which are more catchy and accesible.
I would not qualify myself as an elitist, as I appreciate what they are doing on tunes like Steambreather, but I cant deny that Remission and Leviathan are their most badass releases, largely in terms of aesthetics, which takes time and experience to appreciate if you haven't been exposed to those style scenes before. I consider Leviathan to be a pinnacle of their career, and one of the greatest metal albums of all time. However, when you compare their entire discography to, lets say artists like Gojira, it would be remiss if I didnt admit that Mastodon simply isnt at that level of greatness. When you guys React to Gojira here, you instantly catch on to all the reasons why they are great, even intuitively which is an element that is so enjoyable to watch. I am not surprised by the Reaction here, but I still stand by the fact that this song is considered Great by many. It does boil down to accessibility, which is something that comes in greater and greater doses as Mastodon's catalogue grows over time, culminating in tracks like Steambreather which are attracting a whole new generation of young listeners and expanding their audience significantly, which some purists might scoff at in disdain. I have loved all their various creative expressions, and am happy this track got a Reaction. Keep up the awesome videos guys. peace and respect
Akash Kapil I agree that their Remission and Leviathan CDs are definitely some of their top albums they've made and I can totally see why some wouldn't like how they've changed. Their new stuff doesn't show as much of their Neurosis influence as their newer records but because they changed their style, they'll always have people who refuse to like the new stuff because of their change in sound. I think it just goes to show their musical range in what they're able to creatively pursue and put out with much success. I mean the same thing goes for Opeth. Hell, they (mainly just Mikael) don't even want to write anymore music involving screaming. This has torn fans because they don't sound like they used to. I, for one, can appreciate it all and, yes, I do prefer their older stuff but it doesn't mean I don't enjoy the new stuff too. Some songs on their last 3 albums I've grown to like just as much as their classics. It's the same with Mastodon. I just pretend they're a completely different band if they change their sound so I don't have any sort of bias in the new music they put out. I always give the new stuff a fair listen because I know that these people are talented musicians and some people are unable to do that, stuck in their old ways. One who wishes to stay open-minded musically must be willing to admit when a newer song is actually better than one of their favorite classics and these Twitter polls are filled with people unable to enjoy a musician's newer and oftentimes more improved sound. I honestly think that sometimes it's best to pick a song somewhere along the median because chances are, you'll get a more intricate song choice that best shows the artist's overall talent.
Your comments are spot on. Agree 100%. I'm hopeful that they'll give them another try.
Fun fact, Mastodon played some background Wildlings in Game of Thrones. Because of course they did.
They also did the music for the origin scene of the Night King... *IN ACOUSTIC!*
(It had electric added when he resurrected the bodies from the battle.)
Please do Oblivion later, it is the better introductory song to you guys. Blood and Thunder was a particularly "standard metal" song coming from this band. I had a girlfriend that didn't like metal and when I first put the Oblivion record up on a road trip, like Ryan said, she immediatly recognized that it was a groove that she would want to come back to. Honestly, I get the impression that many subscribers that are metalheads had high expectations for this reaction because Mastodon is regarded as trendsetters and highly creative, say on the level of Gojira.
Oblivion is a very different song than this. Please react to that as well and give Mastodon a second chance.
exactly what i was trying to say!
Agreed
Eh.............no thanks
Pinhead Larry exactly. Come back to Mastodon some time. Mastodon is ANYTHING BUT mundane and average.
Begging you guys to react to Pantera - Cowboys from Hell
I think Cemetery Gates would be better tbh
At The Gates - Slaughter Of The Soul
Yes!
you guys shouldve listened to oblivion.
Being a huge metal fan This was the first Mastodon song I ever heard and initially felt the same way you guys did, now they’re one of my favorite bands of all time! it’s definitely not the best entry song for this band.
Scotian84 same!
Exactly how it was for me.
You guys have made me fall in love with metal for the first time over again haha keep doing what you're doing, love from Ireland!
This album takes a couple of listens. For me, when music requires a few listens for me to fully understand, and love, usually what ends up being my most favorite. This album takes a few listens. But, if you give it time to sync in you will soon realize its brilliance.
Pantera - Cemetery Gates
Oblivion is much better! or The Czar or The Last Baron if you're feeling adventurous. Also. You guys have to go back to gojira again. Flying Whales, Oroborus, born in winter, or pray
Mastodon are hands down the most important post 2000 metal scheme and masters of odd time signatures, syncopation and offbeats. So you will have hard time with their music if you just casually listen to it once. That said Blood and Thunder is one of their most straightforward tunes and Oblivion is also pretty tame. For the real, full fat experience you need stuff like The Wolf is Loose, Capillarian Crest or The Last Baron.
Well said! I agree.
Haha I'm not sure how they'd react to Capillarian Crest. That's a tough one for a metal newbie.
The last baron fucked me up
Do Mastodon right and check out Oblivion sometime. Thanks guys.
This video absolutly drove me insane. You should not have been introduced to mastodon with this song....
Pleeeease check out oblivion! It's a completely different animal
Or The Czar
Crooken "roots remain"
As is stargasm
Reason for the split between Blood and Thunder vs Oblivion has to do with the split of the fans. Their new albums (way more progressive) compared to their first 2 or 3 albums (more sludge metal) create a schism between fans. It's similar to how you guys mentioned in the Metallica One video where some fans think Metallica wasn't metal by that album. If you're looking for more dynamic music from them, you picked a sludge metal song. This album was probably their pivot into progressive metal as other songs on the album become much more dynamic. Please dip into their catalog after this album and you won't be disappointed. The Czar, Jaguar God, Oblivion, Stargasm, Roots Remain, etc.
bombukei so true. Best comment regarding the current state of fans. I appreciate both styles. That solo on Roots Remain is an eargasm.
You forget the last baron, the most brain damaged Mastodon prog songs
I request Roots Remain and Jaguar God aswell. I know 100% they will like them
Couldn't agree more. Mastodon are prog metal gods but Blood and Thunder is not going to bring you there. Try their newer stuff - any of it - but especially Crack the Skye. Love you guys though, you are the best!
I was disappointed in y'alls disappointment with the Mastadon track. I don't think there's anything wrong with your 'sound system', I feel like that muffled type sound, primarily with the lyrics, were intended, with the overall production value of this song. I've watched enough of y'alls vids to know that you value that 'crisp', high caliber production as far as the audio goes. In genres like metal, punk, and all the other newer, hard edged sound, that crisp, 'ear friendly' sound isn't alway the desired effect with the final production.
George, your evaluation that this song references Melville's Moby Deck is dead on. The entire album, Leviathan, makes references to the classic story of man vs. beast. Probably my fave release by Mastodon. I hope you give Mastadon another day in court, although this may be one of those bands that y'all just don't really dig.
As you guys continue your journey through the world of this particular genre of music, I hope your horizons continue to expand, and that you'll eventually be able to appreciate groundbreaking bands such as Mastodon.
ruclips.net/video/labytsb3gfI/видео.html
Try that link, the band's actual video on the Relapse lable may give you guys a better overall feel for that tune, and give you a better appreciation of it.
Please don't get me wrong, I'm certainly not making attempt to critique your own critique of this particular song, only providing my own observations of your obsevations/real reaction. I ♡ what y'all do. Please continue onward, don't change a thing!
lol that relapse video has shit quality
I think that was the one they were watching, because it really sounds like it's played into a pillow in that video. The drums are muffled and difficult to make out, which would probably be why they think the drumming is bland in this reaction.
The sound and production in this particular Mastodon album is fucking terrible imo.
Shit source combined with Bose's sound signature, which is particularly bad with mid-range heavy production. Also the production on this album is kind of on the raw side, so you need more bitrate to reproduce it properly.
I've never heard a Mastodon song with poor audio quality until this video. And I've heard this song several times before.
Guys, this is not even close to the best that Mastodon has to offer. They have evolved technically and sonically since this song, which is basically their first big single. Look more to stuff on the more recent albums and you will be blown away. (George, the drummer sings on the more recent material whilst being in my not so humble opinion the best drummer in the biz.) Please check out more of these guys,I cannot possibly overstate how incredible they are. Songs like Asleep in the Deep, Precious Stones and Jaguar God are more fitted to your tastes. Trust me. Read this. Absorb it. I can guarantee you'll be all about it
Who is George???
I'm late, but you are wrong. Leviathan is peak Mastodon
Mastodon is one of the bands where a lot of the things they do well are very nuanced and subtle, and one of the bands where each of their songs sounds very different. Not an easy band to get into, but once you do they're amazing
Jake Davisson indeed. The drumming on this song is fucking brilliant.
Also how can you get the impact of the song when you stop it every 10 seconds. This shit is fucking relentless. You do it a disservice by not letting it flow. The riff isnt mind blowing sure, but the song is well written and it has so much energy.
Ghost - Cirice
Just a "standard riff"? Sure, it's simple, but damn if it ain't anything but standard! First it's just the riff, and then IT'S ON! :D One of the most kickass song openings ever.
And yeah, presuming it's transmitted by your recording anywhere accurately, it indeed sounds like you need to update your speaker setup. Definitely sounds above laptop speakers 'n' shit, but not great, tbh.
It's regrettable that this beat Oblivion because Oblivion sounds completely different and it's the kinda metal I know you'll like. Grats on the 200K
Disagree, they are more into the groovy, head-moving sound that quickly grabs you. They also aren't really into the progressive sound right now, given their reactions to Dream Theater and Opeth. I think they would've liked Oblivion even less than this.
travistotle I think they would have liked it more. It's not proggy in the same way as Opeth, and it's much more bite-sized compared to Ghost of Perdition.
Oblivion is also a much more dynamic song than BaT, with a clear hook and really interesting vocals. Even if they wouldn't love Oblivion, I think they'd appreciate it more.
They are all about the hook and solos what are you talking about
Go see a live metal show and film your reactions!
#100k
RussXnimbusX42 #200k lol
RussXnimbusX42 that’s a great idea.
RussXnimbusX42 , that is a great idea.
Best idea ever.
Yes, Good Idea!!
Lamb of god, laid to rest, omerta or 11th hour stunning grooves so many great tracks.
Either Symbolic or Crystal Mountain by Death
Crystal Mountain is my favorite Death song🤘. That being said they'd hate the vocals
Raul Hantig based on how they have reacted in previous videos I don't think they would be able to get past the vocals for Death.
Sswoody Yeah but they would love the guitar playing and the complexity of their music
I'm so disappointed this song won the poll. Oblivion would be so much more inline with your guys' taste in music. Personally i'd rather see you review The Motherload than anything else. But I'm not a big fan of Mastodon, I think that most of their songs are like you said, forgettable.
How can you think most of their songs are forgettable, yet be disappointed with the poll? If you're a casual fan, fine, but they've got a wide ranging catalog of songs.
Yeah, Motherload!!!
I agree with Oblivion being a really cool song while still being more accessible
Because I'd rather them review something I think they might enjoy than a song I know they won't care for.
mastodon suck they got this one right on the money, average at best.
Pantera - Cowboys From Hell. It's groove metal, come on! Congrats on 200k! Cheers!
Josh Grooves pantera in not groove metal.at least on this planet.
a durga profile picture.. thats rare
I asked for this
@@reddeadmetalhead83subscrib30 lol ok
This song always bring such strong imagery in my mind i see the crashing waves the ores swinging and an old man deranged by desire to kill screaming at his hired men and the whale screaming back at the old man kicking mile high waves lol
Please do Oblivion next. You’ll like that song much more than this one.
Ghost - Cirice or SquareHammer
Gojira - L'Enfant Sauvage
YES !!! And to be fair I’m a metal head and the first time I heard a song from mastodon I hated them lol. I came back years later and they are one of my favorites. Still great video !
Mike S. This right here. Same reaction from me.
Same here as well. I have liked metal for a decade or two now, and it took me about 5 years from my first listen to really get into Mastodon. If I had started with Crack the Skye, I think things may have been different, but that's just how it is. They're now my second favorite band.
Mike S. Same here you nailed it.
I agree, I had been listening to metal for about 10 years before I heard Mastadon and it took several years before they grew on me.
Have to do animals as leaders - CAFO
They might like "tempting time"better.
I really think Oblivion is a much better intro to Mastodon. I hope you guys can give Mastodon another chance.
yes it is, I've never really liked Blood and Thunder that much, Oblivion is much more special I think.
Please do pantera cemetary gates. Keep up the good work guys !
they need to listen best solo ever on their reviews
Thank you for finally covering a Mastodon track. They're a big force in the 2000-2010 metal scene, though I think they've kinda lost their touch lately.
Anyway, about Blood & Thunder. This is what I would call a really good introductory track - for better or worse. Mastodon changed noticeably from album to album; after their relatively straight-forward first two albums (Remission and Leviathan), they became significantly more progressive with Blood Mountain and Crack the Skye. So, on Leviathan, they're making very moderate sludge metal - only in the big finale track (Hearts Alive) do they start really flexing their prog tendencies. On top of that, Blood & Thunder is the first track off the album, which means that they're just trying to put a decent jam up front to get people into it before they start playing around a little bit.
And like you said, for those with ears untrained in the tropes of a particular genre, a lot in the middle may blend together, despite how accurate and insightful I've seen your analysis of the higher highs and lower lows to be in the several other videos of y'alls that I've watched. Blood & Thunder is definitely a track designed to stay in a certain comfort zone and push the buttons of metalheads without getting too weird. While it's definitely a decent introduction to Mastodon, that's all it is - it's the first step.
If Oblivion (which is the first track of Crack the Skye) had won the poll, it definitely would have been a much more interesting and unique listen, but also a more difficult listen. I think there's a double-edged sword here, where an easier-listening track like Blood & Thunder isn't very impressive, but a more complex track like Oblivion, though it throws in more unique elements, might be riskier overall due to that creative diversification. They play around more with the odd meter that y'all found hard to get along with, but they also include clean vocals...that kind of thing.
In the grand scheme of things, you're definitely not wrong in your analysis. If it didn't grab you, it didn't grab you. I just thought that a little context would be helpful. Good shit, keep it coming.
leviathan is such a hard album to new listeners. any song from crack the skye wouldve made them insta-fans
Pantera:Cemetery Gates.
Could of swore they already did that one. If not what the fuck is taking so long!
Mickey Rube
They didn't. The did Walk.
Mr.Mister We should defiantly get them to do it then!
*Rammstein* - Asche zu Asche
*Gojira* - Flying Whales, The Art of Dying
*Epica* - Deconstruct, Kingdom of Heaven, Serenade of Self-Destruction
*Anathema* - Deep, Empty, Sleepless, A Dying Wish
*Paradise Lost* - One Second
*Opeth* - Bleak, Harvest, Deliverance, Sorceress
*Death* - Empty Words
*Hammerfall* - Glory to the Brave
*Rhapsody of Fire* - Dawn of Victory
*Sonata Arctica* - Replica
*Sepultura* - Desperate Cry
*Pink Floyd* - The Great Gig in the Sky, Time, Hey You
Epica Kingdom of Heaven yesss good idea
definitely something from Gojira's The Way of All Flesh. Toxic garbage island would be another good one. That album is in your face, but has a lot of grooves and rhythms even non-metal fans can sink their teeth into. Wolf down the earth and Esoteric surgery are great in that way as well. I also think they'd enjoy some tracks from Slayer's God Hates Us All.
Maicon that is one good list :)
You sir have great taste!
I'd definitely be interested in hearing them check out some Rammstein. For noobs, I'd go with Sonne or Kein Lust, though Asche zu Asche is also a good one.
Amazing drumming on this one!
Maybe react to a whole album for 100,000 or 200,000 subscriber special?
I think they really should
MurderousPurpose Yes! That's a great idea!
Jesus Christ yeah. Pick the Wall then or Once More Round the Sun and just blow their freaking minds.
Yeah, a good concept album would be pretty great in that case, maybe The Wall, queensryche...
My favorite album all the way through/vote is Morning View by Incubus.
gojira- flying whales
Global Warming is better!
Bryan Gates I prefer flying whales
Oblivion would have been a lot better for you guys. I'm a Mastodon fan and I don't even care for Blood and Thunder.
Also it's supposed to sound muffled.
TheGafel it's better to show the roots of the band before going into their more recent work.
No look up the music video for it it sounds like shit
Doctor Doom I disagree. It's a crap song. And if you wanna talk about roots then that would be a song from Remissions anyway.
King Diamond - Welcome Home
They have a song called "Jaguar God" and Mastodon fans chose this one? Dude...
Yeah, this whole album (EoS) is full of the most awesome solos (the only exception being "Show Yourself" which has a bad solo in my opinion)
Tell me about it. That's not even in my top 3 of that album(Leviathan) ffs!
Emperor was so good, the hunter as well. I have loved them from the beginning but I feel the hunter and emperor have so good
Deftones - Passenger Haven't done Deftones yet. Its an EPIC song (feat. Maynard from TOOL) We need an impactful song to rebound from the Mastodon debacle. : )
OMG Yes!! Definitely need a Deftones react
For Deftones I'd vote for Change In The House Of Flies, Be Quiet And Drive or You've Seen The Butcher.
Yes please!
Grass Hopper fool that depression shit is not metal get out of here
john terrazas - Excuse me, I guess you're an intellectual superman. Haha. Sorry that song makes you depressed...If you were mentally stronger you'd but able to handle the depressing nature. I bet a quick call to your mom after the song would make it all better. You're probably a decent guy...calling people you don't know and have never met a fool makes you look the fool. : )
I'm actually pretty disappointed that Blood And Thunder won the poll. As much as I like the song, it's low on the list of songs I would use to introduce people to Mastodon. Oblivion would have been the better option.
No
I feel like this song and this reaction was a watershed moment for your channel and your own personal journey into metal music.
So disappointed when I saw you guys were doing Blood & Thunder as your first Mastodon song, because I immediately knew that you guys wouldn't care for it. I really think you guys would have liked their newer stuff a LOT more.
For sure..... just start emperor from the beginning and press play
Yep, they should listen to "Curl of the burl".
And here I thought Mastodon would've made up for the Opeth reaction but people voted this song over way more accessible tracks. Anything from the latest albums would've been great and these guys would've loved it.
mastodon suck
Neil Fallon from Clutch sings the "split your lungs on blood and thunder..." part. Clutch is one of my favorite bands, and I highly recommend any song by them, especially from their album "blast tyrant"
Thought that was Scott Kelly from Neurosis? He's been on a lot of Mastodon songs actually.
Patrick Tow similar sound, but it's Neil Fallon. There's a few live performances on RUclips that show Neil singing.
+1 on Clutch. "The Mob Goes Wild", "Mercury", "Profits of Doom", etc. all worthy of reaction vids.
Patrick Tow Scott kelly sings on aqua dementia on this album.
I love the video for "A quick death in Texas." I vote for that one!
Pantera- cemetery gates
Skylar Fast I couldn’t agree more!
The Official 101 Proof version
You should have reacted to Mastodon's The Wolf is Loose. Much better audio than Blood and Thunder, and much more true to Mastodon's thrash roots than Oblivion. If you do Mastodon again, do THE WOLF IS LOOSE.
This review reminded me of when you guys did Raining blood-slayer, I think you guys would've faired better with south of heaven as an intro into slayer. Same with oblivion being a much better intro into mastodon.
As per usual, the popular entry is the least favored by them. Same with Opeth.
I really want to see you guys do Tool-Jambi. I promise you’ll love it. But if not and you wanna stick with the Whale motifs...GOJIRA Flying Whales!!! We already know you love them!
Yes, this, a million times yes. Flying Whales by Gojira. Groovy as FUCK
I was upset to hear you giys didn't like it but after hearing your perspective I found it interesting and understandable as to why you didn't enjoy it as much as the people who typically listen to this music do, really nice video 👍
Blankishish i listen to metal and i find mastodon nyeh
Love what you guys do, always such honest reviews :)
Shoutout, Nightwish - Dark chest of wonders!
Have your mind blown well and truly
Listen to Oblivion, it's almost like its from a different band.
You should've reacted to Divinations. Blood and Thunder is good, but Crack the Sky album... Oblivion is also there. Divinations and Oblivion PLEZ
I back Divinations, honestly. Feel it's a much better song for a reaction. Surprised people are pushing the others so hard. But Oblivion would also be a decent choice, certainly compared to this one.
Because divinations is 2:17 shorter !
Should have pick The Last Baron, for a longer reaction video.
bill burr talked about your rush yyz episode on his podcast, you guys are killing it
in the latest episode?
the Christmas pod, email question at the end

This whole album is referencing Moby Dick, there's a song called I am Abab. Edit: holy shit I love Mastodon.
**Type O Negative-Black No. 1**
Something completely different than the stuff you've reviewed so far. It is far more “pop”-sounding, more operatic and definitely more theatric.
agreed do type o
Christian Woman is a much better choice
Black No. 1 !!!
my girfriend's girlfriend, black no1 or christian woman. all are great. do ton please guys. in the name in peter RIP
Congrats on 200k!
These guys must be fans of uncle paul.
It's the song, the vocals on this song are quite drowned out. Quality reaction as always. Keep it up.
The first Mastodon song I heard was Seabeast. I was working until 2am at the time (2006-2007), and the video came on when I got home and was unwinding before going to sleep. It’s an unusual song, so at first i was just like “what is this?”, but then that outro riff just kicked my ass. I bought Leviathan a few days later, and I’ve been an enormous fan since
Pantera - Domination
Henrique RBP omg yes! They should do this one!
Oblivion would have been a much better choice for you. Mastodon are one
of THE most creative bands so this song does not do them justice. Check
out the czar, last Baron or Jaguar God. Also time you guys take another
look at Gojira. I highly recommend Flying Whales
