    I don't remember how my grandmother would do it but she made beautiful things like chokers, crosses, roses, and other things. If she looks at something she could make it. She would even crochet with beads. I would do it for a bit but my grandfather would have his fishing poles and I would go fishing instead. I can make some awesome fisherman knots. But she could knit, crochet, tat, and many other things.

    Okay, I have to say: you really surprised me. I've been doing kumihimo for more than a decade now, the kind where you use a wooden marudai and weighted spools and silk thread and so forth, and I initially kind of looked at the title of this with kind of a "Yeah, kumihimo? She may *think* so, but..." I still would say that what you're doing is closer to the handwoven South American patternwork, but that stitch is definitely a simple kumihimo pattern, and the work is lovely. I wouldn't want to try a 16-spool Genshi pattern with beads (I'd lose my mind, it's hard enough with just silk) but your necklaces are beautiful and worth the work. Thank you!

    • @beadaholique

      Hey Caroline, welcome to the channel! So we haven't tried this sort of gradated pattern as a bracelet, but what springs to mind is doing it as a wrap bracelet using slightly smaller 10/0 beads. You really want length for this pattern so the gradation can happen slowly and you get a lot of that blended look. Take a look at this video we did for another kumi kit of ours, I think if you apply the pattern to this style of bracelet it'd be lovely: beadaholique.com/products/instructions-for-making-the-beaded-kumihimo-wrap-bracelet-kit

We can sell and ship our kumi necklace kits internationally, you can see a list of countries we currently ship to here: www.beadaholique.com/support-center/help-shipping
      If you don't see yours on the list I'd suggest emailing our customer service, it is sometimes possible for us to add countries. If we're not able to ship directly to you some of our customers use a package forwarding company such as www.viabox.com to get a US address that we can ship to.

    hello I recently finished the black & rainbow teal necklace and I love it!
    however, I would very much like one that is red & black or red & white.
    how many tubes of each color would I have to buy in order to make the full necklace. I want to know before hand cause I don't want to have to stop and wait to get more beads.
    Thanks!

    • @beadaholique
      @beadaholique  8 лет назад +1

      For your "focal color" you will need 2 tubes (possibly 3 depending on your length). For the "main color" you will need 4 tubes (possibly 5 depending on your length). Since the tubes are not the "quantities" we use for the kits, I would err on the side of safety in having more. I know how frustrating it is to get half way done with a project and have to stop because you need to order more.

    • @elisadallomo
      @elisadallomo 7 лет назад +1

      When you say "tubes" you're talking about the 8 gram tubes, right? So for the focal color we'd need 16-24 grams and the main color, 32-40 grams..?

    Those are beautiful! Thanks for the free tutorial. I've made quite a few Kumihimo ropes but every time I use any type of bead and try to carefully cull them. I don't know where the beads are made but I absolutely hate them because there inevitably is a spot with a hidden bead or the bead is so small that the thread shows. Is there any way of fixing this, without destroyed the work I've done? What type of beads do you consider to be the best? Lately I've use Matubo beads and I love the consistency of the size of beads. The ropes always come out looking perfect. I'm so frustrated with most of the beads I had previously purchased, although not at Beadaholique, and sell them online at a bargain price. : (

    • @beadaholique
      @beadaholique  8 лет назад

      We have made Kumihimo ropes with 10/0 Miyuki Delicas as well as 11/0 and 8/0 Toho Beads. If you are having thread show, it may be that you need to keep a tighter tension as you braid. I think you are right to look for beads that are consistent in size. If you are having beads get lost in the braid you can try to pop them out with a toothpick or crochet hook.

      Finally, string 40 beads of your main color each on to each of the eight strands. And braid.

    I absolutely love this necklace, normally I make different kinds of beading jewellery. I would like to make it with the beads that I already purchased from this shop. I have everything I, the disc enz
    I was just wondering,
    are all strands stung the same way as the first that you did you did in the in the tutorial? Or do really need to by the refill kid as well ?

      The strands are not all strung identically. We decided not to show the stringing of each strand because it would have made the video 50 or 60 minutes long but we've included a write-up of the pattern in the video description here on RUclips. If you click "Show More" beneath the video's text and scroll to the bottom you'll see the stringing pattern.

      Some people do sell longer kumihimo pieces like this, and it's worth asking for a fair amount that accounts for the time you put into it, just like other hand crafts such as quilting or knitting. We ask people not to sell the exact patterns we provide with these kits, but we're happy for people to take the techniques they learn here and use them to make their own designs for sale.

      this process is NOT frustrating it IS meditative. Instead of producing just a relaxation effect like in a yoga class you have produced a beautiful braid and a relaxation effect! Every time you wear it or look at it, you are instantly taken back to that relaxing time. The return on investment just keeps going up!

      Sylvie Greeniaus I agree, I can bead for hours. I get pleasantly lost (in a good way) while I am beading. I can see where others might feel this style is long and drawn out and easier to bead crochet a rope. Some like immediate results while other feel relaxed and laid back and enjoying my image come to fruition. Very satisfying.

I just started watching all the tutorials I could find and they are all great, but the one I will put on here for ya is just a hair bit different and that difference is what I needed.

    I love this design thanks for sharing it. I personally do not use Toho's and as I've found Miyuki's are generally smaller just make sure the tension is tighter on this to avoid strands showing? Thnx:)

      Hi Loleta, unfortunately we're not able to ship the kits to Yemen, it's not one of the countries our shipping company provides service to. I'm sorry we can't be more helpful. If you have a store near you that focuses on beads, or Do It Yourself (DIY) craft projects you may be able to find supplies for kumihimo there.

    When you say you can take length out of the teal area at the beginning, my thought is you need to take the same amount of beads out at the end teal area for balance.
    Am I thinking right?

    hai mam...all ur tutorials are very nice.
    iam from India. I am attracted into kumihimo braiding,which is not so common in India. I got the disc.but my thread won't fit with small beads.
    pls guide me to choose kumihimo thread.
    waiting for your reply.

    • @beadaholique
      @beadaholique  8 лет назад

      Our favorite thread for kumihimo is Super-Lon (Or S-Lon as it's often called), which is a twisted nylon thread available in many different colors to make your project. Many of our kumihimo projects use S-Lon size 18 thread with Toho seed beads in size 8/0. You can see all the colors of S-Lon we carry here: www.beadaholique.com/jewelry-making-supplies/beading-cord-ribbon/super-lon-cord

    • @beadaholique
      @beadaholique  8 лет назад +1

      I don't think you would be able to tell much of a difference. From the side by side comparisons that I have personally seen, the end results look pretty much the same. It's really a matter of which one do you prefer doing. I hope this helps!

    Thank you for this. I have a question, though. How do you keep it from stretching out after you've woven it together? Are you using a heavy weight in order to "pull" the braid down? I am finding I get different lengths with different types of cords and weights and am rather lost :)

    • @beadaholique
      @beadaholique  2 года назад +1

      For this project we are using Super Lon Nylon thread, size 18 (0.5mm). We recommend pre-stretching the cord just a bit. This can simply be done by wrapping some thread around your index finger and gently pulling the other end with your opposite hand. You should stretch about a foot at a time or so. You can find the S-Lon thread here: beadaholique.com/search?type=product&q=S-Lon
