    Looks great! The first time I saw one was at a friend's sod farm. I not only learned about it but how cheap a poor boy will try to get the job done. He had a couple beach towels warped around a antenna pole on the back of a Murray lawnmower and of course....drunk ass hell!

    For Timothy or orchard grass, I've had good success using cimarron to control Johnson grass and horse nettle. It will turn fescue yellow. Get the Johnson grass before it's knee high.
    I've also used it to suppress fescue seed heads in the spring in orchard that fescue had started to get in. It's not cheap but works.
    Good videos sir! Enjoy them.

    OK I built one of these contraptions last year... similar but different. Mounted to an RTV with a sprayer tank in the bed we had PVC with holes drilled in it, no fabric. Instead we draped beach towels that the herbicide would soak, and dragged the beach towels across the Johnson grass (I call it Frankenstein grass). Anyways... with herbicide you can't tell until a week or more what the results are. To make this short.... it was a mess. Too much kill, I guess because I wanted to make sure we got the target weed, I over did it.
    What you got may work, but I'll stay tuned for your followup video.

    I just started watching your videos. Great information. Thank you for sharing. I'm not too far from you, I'm in East TN and I have the same if not a worse problem with Johnson grass. Some farmers around here love it to feed the cows but once that thing takes over it is very hard to control. I think it's a nasty grass that needs to be rid off. Again thank you for the videos..

      +John Hernan. Yeah I hate that stuff, fortunately it's only in that one field. Glad you found my channel hope you enjoy.

    I have never seen one of these mounted in this manner - on the front end of the loader bucket but I shall be interested to hear how well it works, or not, as the case may be. Weed wipers have been used here for controlling tall weeds (such as thistle, nettle and docks) and bolting weed beet in sugar beet crops quite successfully so long as the operator drives steady enough to allow the weed to pick up a decent dose of product as the rig passes by.
    I have seen tricycle type machines for use in pasture pulled behind an ATV in grassland with a contra-rotating roller wiping the weeds as it passes over them. Their problem appears to be excessive dripping and damaging the pasture grasses. Also since the machine is towed the ATV wheels roll down weeds which don't get touched and, if it works, they grow back up and the field still looks something of a mess and requires further treatment!

    • @DLHFarms
      @DLHFarms  7 лет назад

      +Dan Whiteford. That's interesting, I have seen the pull type with the ATV. I notice mine dripping when going across the side of a hill, I'm sure there will be some crop damage, but I'm not sure what else to do with this Johnson grass. I have tried 24d, but I guess it's not really a broadleaf weed, I have also tried mowing it really short with a lawn mower. I thought I had killed it because it all turned brown last fall and it didn't come back for first cutting, but surprise it came back better than ever for second cut.

    In the process of making one now to go on the front of my 4 wheeler.. of course it will be shorter than yours. Just to use for pop up weeds in the pasture field.... do you know what kind of fabric they used for the wick ?

    • @DLHFarms
      @DLHFarms  7 лет назад

      +Chuck Mayes. I have no idea, that's what kept me from making my own. It's kinda like burlap but it's denser and thicker. They make one for an ATV with a hand crank to raise it up and down.

  • @crslyrn

    I think I remember something similar to that setup from the late '70s early '80s. I think it was call a "Rope Wick". It was used for the same concept but in soybeans. Stay safe.

    Gotta be careful with that, had a trailed one for a quad bike and found that the wheels passing through the treated area would gather the round up burn the good grass where they went. I'm new to the channel, keep up the good work

    If you use 2 parts 50/50 antifreeze and 1part glyphosate in your wiper it will burn the Johnson Grass much better. Antifreeze works as a surfactant to make glyphosate stick and stay on the weed. Also go in same track both ways on weeds will knock the crap out of them.

    I hope you have good luck with yours. We bought a Speidel a few years ago and I just haven't been impressed to be honest. I used a garden hose as my air line and getting an airtight seal with it was impossible, and I don't like that you have to unscrew the hose every time to refill it. Since I could never get it airtight it always leaked more than I wanted it to, and it seemed like I had to make several passes over the same area to get a decent application. When it was completely full it wiped on to the johnsongrass very well but once it hit about half full it wouldn't wick well enough. Also, in the offseason I found that rodents love to eat the canvas. I haven't even used it this year and have been trying to mow out the johnsongrass instead, and am also going to try spraying it conventionally with round up and see if the good grass recovers. It's a constant battle and we lose every year!

    • @DLHFarms
      @DLHFarms  7 лет назад

      +OSUOiler. Good to know, this is only the second time I've used mine, worked good the first time. I found on mine if you just loosen the fitting where the hose connects you can then unscrew the plug without taking the hose off. Mine has a pretty good airtight seal on level ground but if you get on a steep slope it will drip on the lower side. I normally try to go up and down the hills if I can to prevent that from happening. I've been keeping mine hanging in the shop, haven't had any rodent problems.

  • @tarefoot
    @tarefoot 7 лет назад +1

    How often do you have to refill it and how do you know when it's about empty? Don't look like it would be too difficult to make one of those wipes, pretty neat do-hicky....LOL

    • @DLHFarms
      @DLHFarms  7 лет назад

      +tarfoot. It has a clear sight glass on one end so you can check the level. If you put out the recommended amount you can wipe over 20 acres with a couple gallons of 4-6 part water 1 part round up. May have to mix it stronger for heavy leafy weeds.

    Let me know how it work out. I've got the same problem in some of my hay fields. I've spot sprayed them with RoundUp and killed them to the ground and then they will come back in about a month. I hope yours works out. They are very frustrating.

    I have been using a wick the past couple of years on my Johnson grass with minimal positive results. I debated trying fusilade or another grass killer. I am curious to see if you have had any luck with this.

    wipers work good .I know you know this but Johnson grass will take over it does make good cow hay .We wipe with a rope wick and im am interested to see if that one works better than the rope .Looks like it would may have to try that one .Have areat day be safe tay cool its been in the 100 here in nc last couple days

    • @DLHFarms
      @DLHFarms  7 лет назад

      +Brad Coley. Yeah that's what I'm trying to avoid is total take over of this stuff, I wash my mower off good if I know I've mowed any of it. It's been pretty hot last couple days here at Myrtle Beach. Getting ready to head back home to the cool mountains.

      Q4 is for broadleaf weed control Johnson Grass is technically a grass, Q4 most other selective weed killers won't touch Johnson grass. Glysophate products are about the only way to kill Johnson grass, until now. Dennis, check into a product called Outrider. Just heard of it by watching a video posted by Bagwell Farms in northern Georgia. I went to Outrider's website and it says it is approved for fescue and orchardgrass pastures and meadows. The North Carolina pesticide manual says it is only for Bermuda grass and Centipede grasses. Don't know why, manufacturer says safe for all at the correct dilution ration. Good luck with that nasty Johnson grass.

    • @DLHFarms

    There is a point in the video where the bucket is rolled back so that the wiper is higher than the heel of the bucket. I hope you did not wipe with it that way. Wiper must be lower than any other point in the loader.
