We have had very good results removing canary grass from an orchard grass field. We used a 20% Round Up to 80% water and anything that received good contact died out. I am planning to go over the same field another time within a week. The first application was in early June. Nick, North West Farmer.
You might have already tried it but we used to get better results when would let the wiper hit the weed twice in opposite directions at a crawl speed. Slow enough to count the bars on the tractor tire. Keep the videos a comin!
I think we did 1 part round up to 2 parts water when we wiped our Johnsonsgrass. Like I said before it actually worked really well when the wiper was completely full. Killed the grass well until the next wave filled in. I am going to try spot spraying our Johnsongrass this weekend to see how it does and if it will clean up before I hay it in a few weeks. We have a spray gun on the side of our pasture sprayer, so I plan to just take the open station tractor and drive and shoot at the same time, lol. But our Johnsongrass patches are much denser than yours so I am not too worried about killing the good grass.
After a week I would think they would be more then just yellow, I'd add more round up like you said. The mix we use out of a 90 gallon tank sprayer kills in about 3-4 days.
+Nursery Life. Ok sounds like a lot of people have had a lot of different kill times with round up, I would say It was and has been very dry when I wiped it and it's still rather dry.
We use them on a sod farm to kill weeds like that it seems to work better if you wipe it one way and then let it set for a few days then hit it again going the opposite direction then wait a week and mow it off
Add a little diesel fuel to the mix it will help the round up stick the weeds your trying to get rid of it really helps a lot. Keep up the great video's
One thought quick thought, how does this plant spread? Seed only or also by root rhizome as well? Seed will lie in the soil dormant for some unknown time - sometimes years which means unfortunately that you may be troubled for a long, long time! If it also spreads by rhizomes then the Roundup will take longer to transfer through the plant system to get to all the growing tips both above and below ground level to do its job.
Had to wipe 300ac of cotton out of the 600 we had total. For the pigweeds. Liberty Link cotton i just sprayed with 4630 self propelled. But man. Those was some long days.
give it more time, depending on the temperature and the humidity it can cause a delay in total kill. I have had some take up to a month for complete weed kill. Roundup can come in several different concentrations. Read the mix on the jug pamphlet and only mix to the higher end of the ratio required. Any more is just throwing money away. good luck/greg
I got a little wick bar you need to increase the flow some an I think you will be good in thick areas you may have to do a couple passes at least that's what I've found.
Looks like you've put a good hurt on the johnson grass. Most likely, a case of trial & error til you find a good mix to set the weed wiper up with. Did you get the round up from the local farm supply store or from a fertilizer supply type outfit? Sometimes the stuff you get off of the shelf at the local farm supply store doesn't seem to have the same strength that you can get from a fertilizer supply type outfit. Stay safe.
Do a 1:1 mixture of 2.4.D and Crossbow, then add .5 parts dishwasher detergent to 4 parts water. The detergent is a surfactant that cuts the oils on the plant, then the 24D and Crossbow will get to the plant to kill it dead.
DLH Farms+ The data sheet for 2.4-D lists a number of grasses and weeds that 2.4-D will kill. Also included is a section for grass pasture. I'm not a farmer, but I have a lot of experience controlling unwanted green things. The 2.4-D and Crossbow mixture was an experiment on trying to kill poison ivy and oak that a neighbor planted to keep kids away from his koi pond. It grew onto my property and I tried straight 2.4-D with no result. My local grass seed supplier suggested the Crossbow product. Called a friend that works for Dow chemical and he suggested the mix since Crossbow also contains 2.4-D. He also suggested the liquid detergent as a way to cut the oils so the herbicide could reach the plant. Problem solved. Any way to try the 2.4-D with the soap mixture first without a lot of work on your part? 2.4-D is a lot cheaper than Crossbow, so if this mixture works on your grass, you're golden.
Any update? I am interested in how this goes for you. I just bought a farm and it has a 30 acre hayfield infested with Johnson grass. The guy that has been cutting it has had an agreement where he does all the work and leaves half the hay so he really hasnt wanted to do anything to make the field better for halfs. The second cutting this year was really late and i bet it was a least chest high and of course this stuff gets stocks on it which probably doesn’t make the best hay. I have heard if you cut it around 18” it makes good hay if managed right (making sure prussic acid has dissipated and whatnot). I plan to put some cattle in the pasture and then feed with the hay when needed and trying to figure out what im going to do to make the hayfield better. It seems johnson grass is a love it or hate it thing. I dont want to go through the headache of trying to get rid of it if its not necessary but my goal is to make the hayfield better so i dony know.
gonna take several trips with the wiper and go different directions only way I can get to die wi6th the wiper.Bagwell farms sprayed with outrider but I never messaged him to see if it hurts the grass. All I read talked like it stunted fescue I don't know .we are wiping to and it is a slow kill . Hope you getting rain cause we hadn't had any in several weeks
+Brad Coley. We finally got some rain this week after over 6 weeks without any, my yard turned brown for the first time since I've lived in my house that's been over 5 years.
If it's yellow after a week I think you got it. If you got it before it went to seed even better. We use 1.5oz per gallon on the concentrate. We have a serious problem with Johnson grass up here. The stuff is a plague. Damn man made genetic experiment is what that grass was... that's how it got started. Anyways sorry if I've chatted at you too much. But let me know how it's turned out after a month.
Dang, I was really hoping that would have worked for you. I've been waiting for an update to see if I wanted to try it myself. Pesky Johnson grass!!! Lol Maybe a higher dose would hit it harder, keep us updated. Thanks for sharing!
Slow kill like that is better because it takes it to the root or Rhizome. If you get the mix too hot it will just burn the top of the plant and make roots grow more! Kinda like you pissed it off lol. Ask me how I know🤣🤣
+storminnormanz. Yeah I know it is, but people don't like to see it in top quality horse hay and it will take over all my fields if I don't get control over it now. Then I will be up the creek without a paddle.
DLH Farms ok love your videos my videos are just what i want to do. And tractor shows.and life in Minnesota.and i will maie a video for you on Friday if i have time
Looks like the glyphosate is working. May take 2 or 3 weeks to work. I was in Meadows of Dan over the weekend. Asked at the diner if they knew you. Christen didn't know of DL Harrel construction. I was sure every eatery in the land knew you. LOL Wish you had gotten my message, would have been cool to do a drive by or maybe a hand shake.
+Steve Earp. I did get your message, I sent you two messages back, telling you to stop by because I was cutting firewood and you could check that out. My mom used to work there, but she isn't this year, to busy keeping grandkids, there is a girl that works there named Autumn, she knows because she comes to our house all the time. Also a woman named Sharron she would have known also. Oh well maybe next time.
LOL I missed your replies. We left early Saturday morning and went to Mt Airy and then to Floyd, VA, teh Floyd Hotel is geat. Then went to Mabry Mill on Sunday. Beautiful farms in that whole area. I would love to live and farm there.

+HillDrop Cotton. No I haven't tried it like that yet, but probably will if I have to do it again
Roundup is a very slow killer I would say you got the most of killed !!! Love your videos keep up the good work !!!
+Mike Haynes. That's good news! Thanks Mike!
I think we did 1 part round up to 2 parts water when we wiped our Johnsonsgrass. Like I said before it actually worked really well when the wiper was completely full. +OSUOiler. Sounds like a good plan our sprayer is like that too, I've sprayed from the seat of the ford 1910 a few times!

It depends how strong you mix I guess. Maybe we mix strong, who knows, but we get great kill results.
We use them on a sod farm to kill weeds like that it seems to work better if you wipe it one way and then let it set for a few days then hit it again going the opposite direction then wait a week and mow it off
+Will Simmons. Good to know thanks!
Add a little diesel fuel to the mix it will help the round up stick the weeds your trying to get rid of it really helps a lot. Keep up the great video's
+Kenny Mysak. Good advice thanks!
Put some dish soap in your mix too. The soap breaks the surface tension of the water allowing it to be absorbed much better into the weeds.
+Gary Ford Jr. Ok!
But don't add it to the mix until it is nearly "full" as any strong agitation will make it foam like mad
@@DLHFarms most of the farmers around here uses soap of some form even in spray tanks
I did that last time I sprayed some weeds
One thought quick thought, how does this plant spread? Seed only or also by root rhizome as well? Seed will lie in the soil dormant for some unknown time - sometimes years which means unfortunately that you may be troubled for a long, long time!

+Dan Whiteford. I'm not sure I guess I should research if it can spread any other way but with seeds.

+Chad DeWitt. Round up is the only thing that I know of that will kill it. I wiped it on so I wouldn't kill my hay.

+Atoyota. I haven't been back to the field since I mowed it to check out how much came back. I need to get back up there just haven't had time.
excellent videos
What do you spray for Dogfennel? I've been using Grazon Next but it's got to where it's so expensive.
+ToothSIayer. All I have used is 24d, Im pretty sure I read on the grazon lable you can't sell your hay if you use it, I may be wrong.
Those are tall weeds, give it a chance to get down to the roots. I think your kill is better then you think.
+Jrbpa 57. I hope so! I'll find out soon
Add some ams to the mix
Dang, I was really hoping that would have worked for you. I've been waiting for an update to see if I wanted to try it myself. Pesky Johnson grass!!! Lol Maybe a higher dose would hit it harder, keep us updated. Thanks for sharing!

+Wayne Christopher. Lol ok good to know!
Just wondering. Did it get most of the Johnson Grass ?
Yes it did get most of it. There was a little left and we pulled it up by hand.
what going on
+Chris Warren. Going to bed I guess.
believe it or not johnson grass makes good hay, my cows will eat it before any of my other normal hay
+storminnormanz. Yeah I know it is, but people don't like to see it in top quality horse hay and it will take over all my fields if I don't get control over it now. Then I will be up the creek without a paddle.
yea, my neighbor used some chemical on his to kill it and it worked. i dont remember the name of it but he said it was really expensive
Vary nise it looks like it works. And i dont know if you saw the videos i made
+Minnesota oliver and deere. No I didn't see it yet
DLH Farms ok. Do what you want.
+Minnesota oliver and deere. I'll check it out when I have time, I didn't know you had one out
DLH Farms ok love your videos my videos are just what i want to do. And tractor shows.and life in Minnesota.and i will maie a video for you on Friday if i have time
+Minnesota oliver and deere. Okay! Great
You waited too late for application. Nothing except Paraquat is gonna kill Johnson Grass that mature
looks like it is just sick. hope im wrong you never know though might make it sick enough where other grass takes over. hope so. good luck.
+Howard Younger. I'm afraid you might be right, but I'll know before long.
1 weeks not lot of time for roundup to work typical fast fix farmer merchant once told me a slow kill is a good kill he was right
I gave up trying to kill it I just let it go and cut it before it gets so big cows will eat it if not to tall.
+joe tiller. I can't to that I've got to get rid of it! I'm getting there I hope.

Looks like you got a kill
+AndersonCattleCo.. I hope so
use diesel instead of water in the mix hahaha
+JCLawn51. Ok!
