Changes to Masterminds on Homecoming Issue 27 p. 5 for City of Heroes

    Homecomings issue 27 page 5 update made some major changes to half of the mastermind for their City of Heroes private server. We will talk about what these changes are and my thoughts on them as a game developer.

    It definitely feels more interesting to play those revamped MMs, especially the zombies in my opinion. The shades add a new tactical element I've never seen on Homecoming before. Since they spawn near the MM, your position in battle suddenly becomes more important, encouraging a more active playstyle.

      Yeah, I found the Necro MM fun to play when trying them all out. The others felt a little bit fresher, but the shades with the Necro really had me pay attention to my positioning.

    Thugs and demons already being so strong and the top two is most likely why they didnt focus on it.

    The problem with the mercenaries that they didn’t fix is their spawn time. They are by far the slowest to spawn and buff.

    Great video, well scripted and clear. MMs are my least favorite archetype, but this should make me take another look and re-roll the few I already have. Thank you for the information and keeping us updated.

      Thank you and it has got me interested in the MMs I was not that into such as Necromancers. So now I am playing the Necro MM a lot more due to these changes.

    I always thought one of the minions should be indestructible once you hit the higher levels or 50 due to one AoE devastating the entirety of the summoned pets and that could even be from just a Lieutenant. Even reducing the recharge significantly does not do much for higher levels as you are still very vulnerable until they get summoned again. Or maybe adding to one of the two pet enhance powers they could have an additional feature of an immediate rez for the lowest minion and they have temporary immunity. This would give you enough distraction to re-summon the rest imo.

      Those are really good ideas you should bring them up to the server you play on or share the idea with all servers and see who implements them.

      Can't you get them perma with enough recharge or do you give up too much in other areas to do so?

    I want to add a new MM power pool which, for lack of a better name, I'm calling "Medieval" which has a slightly different focus than other MMs in that it's more melee oriented overall which is a slight debuff considering all the abilities the minions have access to. You get a broadsword to use as your weapon.
    Then, for your summon 3, you get: One Swordsman, one Maceman, and lastly one Axeman at level 18, which is the only one of the three that gets any ranged capability when upgraded. At a basic level, your swordsman hacks and slashes, your Maceman bashes and crushes, and your Axeman also hacks and slashes. On the first Equip, things take a little different turn than they otherwise would in other MM classes -- your Swordsman gains access to a Shield which gives it greater defenses/evasion along with a Shield bash attack. Your Maceman, similarly, gains some armor for Lethal and Smashing Resistance, and their mace becomes spiked which adds minor Lethal DoT bleed damage to their regular attacks. The Axeman is the only one who doesn't get a defensive buff on their first equip, but instead gains the ability to throw their axes for a ranged attack as well as the ability to periodically set their axes on fire so that about every 1 in 4 attacks is a flaming axe attack that deals additional Fire DoT. Then on the maximum upgrade: your Swordsman becomes a Knight, your Maceman becomes a Giant, and your Axeman becomes a Berserker. Primarily, your Knight gains a horse and a super long recharge ability of a massive Lance charge attack that deals superior damage and sends a single affected foe flying. In addition to this, being on the horse gives the Knight better mobility and even more evasion. Your Giant gains resistances to knockup, knockdown, knockback, etc and greater defenses due to increased size, as well as a massive melee circular AoE where they whirl their mace in a circle around themselves and can send every foe in a short range around them flying. Your Berserker, meanwhile, gains a self-heal, gains a Taunt, and gains the power of a Brute to deal increasing damage the lower on health they are and the more they fight in general.
    At your level 2 minions, you get 2 Mages/Wizards. Your Mages/Wizards are very squishy and have less health than other level 2 minions of other MMs, but come with a ton of utility and versatility. One Wizard specializes as a buffer and healer while the other Wizard specializes as a debuffer and mezzer to lock down or Hold targets. Notably, the healer wizard has no actual damaging moves, even on upgrades, and instead gains more healing and defensive buffs for you and other henchmen. The debuff wizard also has no real attacking moves but can create zones of effect that deal minor DoT to foes that pass through, effects like Bonfire or Caltrops as examples. Both Wizards can also gain teleportation powers upon a general upgrade. Specific details of exactly what powers the Wizards have and gain subject to change as I haven't exactly figured that out yet, only that they should offer greater versatility at the price of being weaker on their own.
    Your level 3 minion, or strongest Henchman you only get 1 of, is the Dragon. Your base Dragon can fly, has thick hardened scales that offers strong resistance to Smashing and Lethal, and your Dragon can bite/chomp, swipe with its claws, and swing its tail around in a cone attack. With your first tier upgrade, your dragon gains a conical firebreathing attack, a foot stomp it can only use when near the ground, and increased resistances to Fire, Toxic, and Cold damage. Your second tier ultimate upgrade turns your Dragon into a wise Elder Dragon who gains Psionic resistance as well as Mass Hypnosis and a single-target Dominate effect.

    I have a technical question i cant find an answer to anywhere: thugs/enforcers/maneuvers... do they buff the MM pets of other players on your team?

      The buffs in your primary set are for just your pets. The buffs in your secondary are for everyone unless it says otherwise.

      @ControlledChaosGaming since this was published, did they ever add a similar mechanic to thugs like they did here to Mercs?
      (Like some kind of debuff?)

    I’ve been away for a year., so my understanding is the upgrade powers you can slot them for healing/def/resistance on all MMs?
    May have to come back and try out my MMs again, probably have to rebuild.
    Is there any hero builder up to date (mids if I can remember)

      That is correct and I do not know of any hero builders that have updated to fit to this change that Homecoming has made.

    Started playing again last week and I'm so glad to be back in COH. I totally forgot how to macros for my MM and my controllers.
    I've never seen that run animation you have on your ninja. Is that a custom stance?
    Thanks for the guide. I came back to COH because I kept watching your videos and finally have free time to play again.

      That is the ninja run, you can get it off the merchant in atlas park. They are on the left side of the atlas statue when facing ms. Liberty.

    Hello ik this is an old video friend just got me into the game how do I increase the size of my henchman they are so much smaller than me lmao I use thugs idk if that matters much

      the only server I know where you can customize your pets is the Thunderspy server.
