I just purchased the 2023 Highlander platinum awd.. super, super impressed with a four-cylinder turbo has plenty of power almost better than my 21 Lexus GX totally amazing highly recommend it!!!!
If they did, they wouldn't sell any of these. Anyone who's been driving long enough, knows that turbos have little to no longevity compared to a well built naturally aspirated engine (V6)
I love the color combo and glad to hear that the turbo 4 is peppy and well tuned. I live in a mountain state and turbo’s are an advantage for maintaining power at higher altitudes.
@@RaitisRides These cars are used to tow the family camper, ATV’s or boats, too and power losses in mountains get magnified. Not so much in Florida, lol. I will take an equivalent hp turbo over a naturally aspirated engine most every time in the Rockies. Then, there’s the efficiency and reduction in emissions that you mentioned which is a nice byproduct.
In my opinion the V6 engine LE model AWD 2022 model is the best that Toyota did so far. The car is amazing and so much power , amazing safety features , automatic gate tail and the engine is so strong. When I use the sport mode the car is amazing . Normal mode is very strong. Go for new 2022 before it runs out.
@7:30 Joe didn't get his math straight on MPG's. 21/city & 28/hwy can NOT equal 34 MPG - though I sure the hell WISH it did ! (more like 24 MPG combined)
On my '21 Platinum the headlights move up down left and right to compensate for turning or up or downhill and to watch it work is amazing. Did you miss this on this one ? Also I do like the flat black guards on the wheel wells which save you from rock chips, ice and snow damage. Mine does not have those. Does the LTD come with Torque Vectoring? They should all come with it. Your mileage numbers don't make sense - if its 28 on the highway and 21 in the city, how did it get 34 combined?
Big question.....will it be as dependable as the V6? I have a 2008 Highlander Limited with 238,000 miles and it runs perfect, no oil burning. Full synthetic change every 5k miles.
@Johnny D's It makes noise on acceleration like most engines, but it’s not as dramatic as most people make it out to be-a lot of overreaction due to displeasure with Toyota switching to the turbo.
@Johnny D's The new Pilot has a V6 and better 3rd row as well, so I think it will beat Toyota if Honda can produce the numbers. The Honda Accords reliability collapsed when they introduced the small turbo 4’s. I think these SUV’s like Highlander will have a lot problems with this small engine after the warranty ends.
The interior looks good for the most part. The Steering wheel looks a bit dated and there's no reason why this shouldn't have LED interior lights. Great video!
Great look. I'm considering this car, but with the hybrid for the improved MPGs. My only "issue" with all of these mid-size SUVs is the "three row" element. That third row is really just there for the second row folks to toss a bag or jacket on. I wish there were more details about the Grand Highlander... but until we see that car, I think the only true three row vehicles should be the Tahoe/Expedition/Sequoia line. Thanks for the review!
Even though the XSE version of this Toyota SUV doesn’t have more power than the rest, it can feel sportier and more fun. You probably won’t carve up any corners, but you can feel a little more aggressive with the upgraded suspension, exterior elements, and when you add the AWD system. Mechanically, no. Their V6 is and continues to be very reliable though the highlander itself has suffered some quality issues over the last several years. The Turbo 4 is not going to match their V6 in terms of longevity and reliability.

This is a nice update to the Highlander. Although Joe, I must say you really skipped over that infotainment center. It doesn’t allow a multi or split screen so you can see the Nav and the Radio or other split screen. This is a miss on the new Toyota tech system they use. No icon Home Screen either if I’m not mistaken. So it seems that this 12+” screen is severely limited compared to a Hyundai/Kia or a Jeep Connect 5 system. The rest of the Highlander I love. The 22 Highlander got 22 mpg combined - ( 21-29) with a V6. Gas mileage is basically the same. A turbo may on the books get that, but when you stress a turbo it eats gas way more than a V6. I had a turbo 4 in an Acura. It was supposed to get 21 combined , I got less than 18 and I am light on the foot. I bet after all your fast accelerations your mpg probably dropped to 18 or less too.

Did some online research and because it is a Toyota i bought a 2023 Limited Platinum. I have a CX-7 turbo that runs on premium, I wasn't getting another. Toyotas runs on regular gaz. I'm glad Honda is keeping the V6 on the Pilot. People these days don't keep cars like they used to. They change cars like how they change phones. If Honda comes out with a V6 Hybrid, man oh man
The 2.5l turbo engine is okay, but it makes me wonder why Toyota keeps cutting off the V6 on their vehicles, first they did it to the Sienna and now the Highlander, and I'm worried that it will be a matter of time before they get to the Camry next.
What I'm more concerned about, is with the price of cars skyrocketing with dealer markups and inflation, how will these turbocharged and smaller engines cope with these larger cars and pickup trucks. Personally, I'd rather keep my V6 Accord and my inline four Accord, and if nothing else, be happy that there's no turbocharger stressing out the engine more than necessary. Excellent review and write up from a professional standpoint, but from the car standpoint I'm not sure how these cars are going to hold up with very small engines with turbochargers. Time. Another great review! Having owned a couple of turbocharged vehicles, I think Toyota is screwing the pooch on this one. One reason consumers loved that V6 was Reliability and you don’t get anywhere near the reliability with a turbo engine vs a naturally aspirated one long term. For those people that like to keep their vehicles a long time, they need to have a non turbo option. I never could stand the turbo lag either. So Toyota switching to the turbo engines is a big mistake. Same for the new Tundra. I would have bought one if it had a V8 option. Main reason I just bought a 2023 Lexus GX460 for my wife was the silky smooth V8 and a 6500lb tow rating.
@@jtjt8331 i don’t mind turbo engines, but long term reliability is a major concern for me. The GX has that tried and true V8 and from everything I could find about it seems to suggest that it’s one of the most reliable vehicles in the world. It is a little thirsty though. If you don’t plan on keeping a vehicle for 100k plus miles, a turbo engine car or truck is fine. Definitely wouldn’t want to buy a used one without a long term warranty.
The V6 most certainly will be more reliable and the real world MPG will more than likely be better. The 4 has more torque but 30 less hp. Think this is a fail other than slightly less emissions.
My great aunt has the 2020 Highlander Platinum but the new Cypress Green looks amazing it looks better than last generation. I would like to own not sure about the Turbo engines might go with Natural Aspiration V6 than again Toyota makes a darn good product so might be good. Overall it's a beautiful SUV, the Highlander looks like a Lexus with all luxury in class.
It's a bit disappointing, but at the same time they're not the only one who went that route replacing a V6 with a V4 turbo in a SUV. I drove the Ford Explorer with a similar set up, and the vehicle moves very nicely. You can barely notice the difference. I'll have to drive it before judging, but I think it will be the same. After all I don't drive my cars like a maniac. Because esthetically speaking, I love the looks of this SUV. It's one of my favorites.
Great looking Highlander! Just wish they had gone hybrid instead of a turbo 4. Gas MPG difference is an insignificant amount above my 2016 Pathfinder, not enough for me want to throw the switch and buy one.
The turbo four sounds louder than the V-6; the 3.5 liter V-6 was more refined in my opinion; maybe Toyota should install a couple of electric motors to bring the horsepower output back up to 300+
I agree. A non plug in hybrid version of this would be great. No e-cvt. Just the turbo 4 with electric motors. 265 hp 310 lbft torque from 2.4L I4 Turbo and 45 hp 90 lbft torque from the electric motor. 310hp and 400 lbft torque using a properly tuned 8 speed auto. 0-60 would be in 4-5 sec range. They can also just use the hybrid powertrain and replace the e-cvt with the 8 speed, beef up the electric motors and tune the engine to put out more power. 210 hp 190 lbft torque 2.5L I-4 paired with 90hp 120 lbft torque electric motor using a properly tuned 8 speed auto. Total 300hp and 310 lbft torque. 0-60 in 5-6 sec range. MPG from 1st example is probably 26 mpg combined and MPG from 2nd example is probably 30mpg combined.
BLACK FENDER THINGS (opinion): Idk if a paint matching color would hold up to the abuse coming from the road? I believe a color maturing the paint would look better on a new vehicle. My only worry is that they would end up looking prematurely old (making the car look old) because of the constant abuse dust & pebbles from the road. Do they have these things in matching colors on other vehicles to know how a color would hold up? If the existing black would hold up better to the constant stuff coming from the road, I’d rather have the black.
So, you seemed to answer my concern that the 4 Turbo is noisier than the V6. Is that true for general highway driving or mostly during aggressive accleration? Is the difference small enough that it won't be a deal breaker?
My 2020 V6 Limited Highlander resale value just went up. There is no way a turbo 4 engine will last as long as the bullet proof V6. 21/28 MPG does not come out to 34. 34 is for the hybrid. You clearly misspoke. Real world straight interstate driving, I get 26-27 MPG on my 2020 V6. And yes it is ridiculous that Toyota does not put hood struts on these cars. I added an after market hood strut kit to mine. Also the wheels are not real chrome on the Limited. They are Toyota chrometec wheels, plastic chrome cladding on top of metal wheel. The Platinum has real chrome wheels.
Saaaaaaay whaaaaaaaaaat!!!??? Hit after hit after hit!!! Toyota bringing the business with this turbo Highlander!!! See them ALL over the place!!! Sure gonna miss that V6 sound though!!! 😕 awesome review Joe and Lori!!!
Is this engine shared with any other Toyota models? Does the Rav4 have the same engine? I was thinking of the Platinum trim but torn between this or the 4Runner Limited.
I own a 2020 Highlander Limited with the V6. I love that engine. It's quiet, it purrs, and gas mileage is great on the open highway where I have achieved 29 MPG. In town, with things in Economy so I don't heavy use the accelerator, I can get 17-18 MPG in the City. I'm pretty sure the 4 banger will do a little better in the City, but based on the highway numbers, I'm glad I have the V6. The first thing I noticed when I purchased it was it's quiet. I'm sure the Turbo 4 will be noisier, but probably not obnoxious. If something dreadful were to happen with my current Highlander, I would have to still consider an identical Highlander or if I really wanted a V6, I would look at either a top trimmed Nissan Pathfinder or go with the Infinity Version. Honda Pilot is ugly, and having owned one before the Highlander, I prefer the quiet and softer ride. Curious to see the Lexus version of the Grand Highlander ends up being.
Thanks for your reviews. I have the LE model from 2017. The V6 has good power even for towing, but it does not handle curbs as I desire. I also added sound deadening to help reduce road, wind, and rain noise. I still get wind noise and a bit of road noise, but I turn the music on to have different noise. I am developing a desire for the Direct 4 and VDIM with Dynamic Rear Steering developments. My real taste is for Lexus. I will get a Lexus next time I change automobiles.
@@cadacabezaesunmundo6496 the only problem with the up coming TX and Grand highlander, they have to drop the V6 due to usa emission standards pushing for full electric oneday. So the v6 and v8 will be dropped for emission standard. Nobody is happy with this. But it will have the max hybrid system with more power from turbo hybrids.
@@bjsimon802 I hear there are some suspicion about the turbo chargers reducing the life of the engines. I may downsize to put less stress on the engine.
What is the aversion to adding a powered telescoping and tilt steering wheel? Seriously, there is every other little nonesense thing, but many leave out the one feature that is a pleasure to use while driving. Especially with memory seats and multiple drivers. Guess It’s a pass for me.
It's not requiring premium. The same engine is used in the RX 350 and NX350 and is tuned for and does require premium and adds a little torque and horsepower because of that. But this one is tuned for 87.
I totally agree with you Joe!!! The trim around the fenders needs to go!! It may be fine to put that stuff on an off-road vehicle but not this Highlander!!!
Having a 2010 Highlander the only thing I think about is being able to tow our caravan. Also my Highlander runs on 91, the turbo may run on 95. It may cost more to run this model.
@@kenharris1877 Are you still happy with it? Would you buy it again? I had a Veracruz (no longer being made) and it had some pricy repairs before I traded it in. Great looking Highlander! Just wish they had gone hybrid instead of a turbo 4. Gas MPG difference is an insignificant amount above my 2016 Pathfinder, not enough for me want to throw the switch and buy one.
I like the black trim above the tires. It brings the tires into the car.
You are corect!
Dude if there was like a hidden curb and you straight bottomed it out driving through that grass, would you have edited it or would it make the cut?
I think It’s a good change. 3.5L has to pay more tax in some countries depending on engine power tax system
The combined MPG that you stated is incorrect for turbo gas not 34 MPG, but 25 MPG.
Does this require High Octane fuel being a Turbo now? 87 is usually $1/gal cheaper
It is not required.
Dose it use hi octane fuel?
7:30 mpg 21 city 28 highway but 34 combined?? 😮😮
probably meant to say 24 combined. slip of the tongue
@@EscapementWatch unacceptable 😜
BLACK FENDER THINGS (opinion):
Idk if a paint matching color would hold up to the abuse coming from the road?
I believe a color maturing the paint would look better on a new vehicle. My only worry is that they would end up looking prematurely old (making the car look old) because of the constant abuse dust & pebbles from the road.
Do they have these things in matching colors on other vehicles to know how a color would hold up?
If the existing black would hold up better to the constant stuff coming from the road, I’d rather have the black.
Good review. Thank you. It’s between this and the new Pilot… if I can ever even find one!
Thanks for saying that!
So, you seemed to answer my concern that the 4 Turbo is noisier than the V6. Is that true for general highway driving or mostly during aggressive accleration? Is the difference small enough that it won't be a deal breaker?
Just bought a 23 Highlander with the turbocharger..very little difference & I traded in a V8 Lexus
What’s the highest tear I can go and still keep a bench seat
That is a great question.
@@RaitisRides never mind just looked it up. Platinum has the bench seat my bad.
Hi Bod it's cold outside in McAllen
Thanks for sharing your great ownership input!
I have a ‘21 Platinum V6. I do like the V-6. I get 27.5 on a highway run. I have an ‘04 Lexus with a V-6 3.3 runs like a top and nearly 20 years old!
Does that engine use port and direct injection like Toyota has done on other engines?
Saaaaaaay whaaaaaaaaaat!!!??? Hit after hit after hit!!! Toyota bringing the business with this turbo Highlander!!! See them ALL over the place!!! Sure gonna miss that V6 sound though!!! 😕 awesome review Joe and Lori!!!
Hold on tight Mario there is way more to come
still able to use regular gas?
Hi Joe, why is it that Toyota Land Cruiser doesn't have a captain seat?
Any Sienna videos coming Joe?
Joe, i have to disagreed with you on the Fenders not body color.....it helped breakup with body color. It also looks rugged for SUV styling.
Is this engine shared with any other Toyota models? Does the Rav4 have the same engine? I was thinking of the Platinum trim but torn between this or the 4Runner Limited.
Been in the Lexus NX I believe.
Is the ride quality the same as the Rx 350 or would you say the RX 350 is still a better ride and has less nosy cabin?
How can the combines mpg be greater than highway? That doesn’t make sense. 34 mpg maybe you meant 24 mpg?
Good review and thanks for the information in good way.
tell me why Hybrid is not popular in US, we don even have gas model in EU here. XLE also.
Look at the Lexus Version of the Grand Highlander coming, called Lexus TX
@@bjsimon802 thanks for the suggestion.
@7:30 I'm going to have to Zonk that math on the Avg MPG LOL. 21 City and 28 Hwy combined is 34??
Sorry about that.
What is the aversion to adding a powered telescoping and tilt steering wheel? Seriously, there is every other little nonesense thing, but many leave out the one feature that is a pleasure to use while driving. Especially with memory seats and multiple drivers. Guess It’s a pass for me.
this one is two big and the raft is too little...anything 5 pax confortable?
how does the towing MPG on a new turbo 4 vs V6? anyone ?
Subaru Ascent has a 2.4 turbo and take 87oct. Hope this doesn’t require premium either.
It's not requiring premium. The same engine is used in the RX 350 and NX350 and is tuned for and does require premium and adds a little torque and horsepower because of that. But this one is tuned for 87.
You should know by now Joe, I’m the beige guy. Love this combo!
I totally agree with you Joe!!! The trim around the fenders needs to go!! It may be fine to put that stuff on an off-road vehicle but not this Highlander!!!
Telluride or this? Almost feels as this 2023 Highlander is a 2018 model so behind lol.
Is this the same engine platform as the Subaru ascent
No is is not.
good video rand-love the color-not a fan of the 4 cylinder turbo and a vehicle that size
Having a 2010 Highlander the only thing I think about is being able to tow our caravan. Also my Highlander runs on 91, the turbo may run on 95. It may cost more to run this model.
Does it have a spare
A vaste of empty space under the hood. They could make an extra storage there. Same as "frunk" in Tesla :)
I do like Tesla
It would be way too hot
@@RaitisRides So, let it be a place for BBQ :)
As much as I like Toyota’s (we have 3), the 4 banger and the price, might be a killer zonk for me!
Yea. Bought a Hyundai Palisade. You get a bit more for the money.
@@kenharris1877 Are you still happy with it? Would you buy it again? I had a Veracruz (no longer being made) and it had some pricy repairs before I traded it in. There were some features I miss on that car like better cargo lighting, mood light that softly lit the console at night and chromatic dimming side mirrors (I REALLY freakin miss those). I don't know why more cars don't use them. SO handy to reduce glare from passing cars. But a big negative was a much harsher ride than the Highlander. Wonder how the newer Hyundias ride compared to the Veracruz.
Did i hear correctly, 34 mpg combined no way! Love Toys and just took delivery on 2023 Highlander Platinum. So far only getting 22 combined with half being highway so not yet convinced i will get 25 range combined…
Interesting MPG. I have a 2015 Highlander XLE and I have been getting 24+ MPG consistently since I bought the car.
Will the 2023 RAV4 Hybrid have the new Toyota multimedia display and voice commands?? Also I like the new phone charger under the multimedia display too.
Yes it will!
I have a 2022 with a V-6 I would love to race to 23 with that turbo four
is the new 2.4L engine reliable?
We will have to wait and see but it should be.
You say to me, "Well Wade, I don't think you are gonna' be able to fit your Turkey Subway Sandwich in that door pocket." Well darn, Joe. What am I to do? Well you can fit that munchwich in that center console. "Easy Peasy, Lemon Squeezy, Joe!!" Lol PS: Love your car reviews!! I've owned and driven two Toyota Highlanders over the last 10 years, and loved them both. Love the green exterior color on this one; still not 100% sold on the I-4 turbo engine yet.
Does the turbo require premium fuel?
Just regular gas
Just wondering if the Grand Highlander is a thing or not?
Being revealed Feb 8th in Chicago
Leg space in the third row is tight, but leather seating makes the inside very hot. Plus, leather breaks down quicker than cloth seats. Yet, it is a very slick and chic design.
said no one ever. My 2008 Highlander Leather still looks perfect.
I am not to sure about that!
Thanks for sharing that great owner feedback!
I love the harvest beige and the brown interior 😩
the only way i will buy this 2023 highlander toyota has to me a life time warrenty on the turboes you know what a turbo cost plus labor to replace thousands.
