Hi all, here is my blind test for the all new Sony A7IV with Zeiss 85mm F1.8 vs Nikon Z5 85mm F1.8 S. I did this portraits photoshoot with Julia @juwwaa in Sacramento downtown. Let me know in the comment below on how many photos you guessed correctly :)

for nikon z5 to even be able to hang with the sony a7iv says alot about how much value nikon put into this entry level nikon z5.....simply amazing job nikon!!!!
Thanks for watching 😊🙏👌🏼
It's surprisingly easy to see where is Nikon - it's more contrasty and the bokeh is better (not swirly). Nikon just make better lenses.
Thanks for watching 🙏😊
Thought the same thing. The contrast difference makes it pretty easy :-)
Swirl is not a distadvantage ;) That's why I like vintage lenses.
La diferencia de color también es notoria, Nikon de por si ya tiene un color más correcto y a Sony hay que mitigarle ese magenta
I fail in second image. 1:05
I'm a long time Nikon shooter that loves all the different systems. This is the first Sony sensor that I may prefer over my Z6ii (and over Nikon color science in general). Thanks for the comparison!
Thanks for watching 😊🙏
If only Sony a7 series was more durable/rugged.
It was hit and miss for the first few. Once I got situated, I got all of them correct. Colors seemed more accurate (or at least a greater differentiation of colors) and a bit sharper on the Nikon. The Sony seemed to have almost like a magenta color filter over it.
Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts 😊🙏
I could just look at the hair and make out which image was the Z5's every time like you after the beginning...more contrast on the Nikon for sure. The darks are darker
Skin tones are whiter with the Sony
Easy to identify . Sony has lighter tone and Nikon is more contrast. So if just for photo I would say Z5 is very good considering the price gap. Good job for the comparison video 😊
Thanks so much 😊
Hi. Did you tweak WB setting on A7 IV or was it set to default AWB without any additional tweaks ? I ask because in this video Sony shifts visibly towards magenta when compared to your last comparisons with Canon and Fuji.
Hi, it was the same without tweak. Default AWB. I think it is because of the lens. I noticed the lens affects the awb as well.
Missed 2. I love my Z6ii. Of course tempted by new Sony tech but I always regret it when I import them into LR. I don’t do portraits or sports so don’t need crazy sticky AF. Just picked up the NIKKOR MC Z 105mm 2.8 S and am loving the images from it. I appreciate your work and videos. My take everywhere is an X100V.
Thanks so much for the support 😊🙏
This was not one of the better showings from Sony. Your recent canon vs Sony video I was very impressed with Sony. In this video I’m questioning the purple tint that keeps showing up. Nikon for more than half the cost held its own in this comparison against Sony. I’m going to guess that maybe the Zeiss isn’t the best option for modern Sony cameras anymore. The GM and FE 1.8 probably render better.
I was thinking this might be because of the Zeiss lens color rendering as well. Just learned something new about how Zeiss lens rendered.
The Sony balances a little too cold and the Nikon a little too warm. Just compensating that temperature might resolve the tint shift. At 3:02 it looks like a comparison between Ektar 100 and Portra 400. Both are great styles, but neither looks particularly natural. Sony does look like it has more dynamic range and deeper contrast like positive film though, whereas Nikon has faded black tones like negative film. Sony seems to pull the white point down, whereas Nikon has true white, though.
Thanks for sharing your detailed insights 😊🙏
@@caliallstaring thanks for recognising my thoughts. ✌️
The first 5-6 pictures are are tricky to guess, but then you see pretty clear, that the Nikon adds a bit more contrast and has a slight green hue, while the sony has a slight magenta bias and lifts middle-dark parts a bit more and holds more back on the contrast. I guess the last 10 pictures or so I got always right then. What I can not really see, is a quality difference between the pictures, not in colors, not in details - they are both very well pronounced and detailed with a similar bokeh - you could make the cameras probably behave like their repective countepart with some tweaking of the settings. You would have to go into technical detail in raw-mode and into pixel-peeping to make out any meaningful quality differences. The two cameras are definitely in the same ballpark, actually very close in quality.
Every hobby- and semi-pro photographer will be just fine with any one of those very good cameras. The Sony A7-4 is more than double the price of the Z5 though...
Thanks for sharing your insights 😊🙏
Nikon colours are just amazing and these S lenses are the best lenses in the market.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts 😊🙏
You can really tell the difference. I got the Z5. I love the color quality difference between these 2 cameras. Great test.
Thank you so much for watching 😊🙏
Which software did you use to edit these pics?
Hi, in this video, these are all straight out of camera jpeg 😊 no editing. For my other editing, I use VSCO app in iPhone.
Sony is easy to guess, it has bad white balance with very strong magenta shift. Nikon is more neutral and looks better.
Thanks for sharing your observations 😊🙏
true that. white balance and deep blacks are fine on Nikon.i can guess all the sony in this one
Your comparison generating quite a buzz. I was actually choosing which images i find pleasing rather than identifying which is which. And to me they are both 50/50, where i found colour pops, details may suffer, or bokeh unpleasant etc. Sosmed may tint your preference towards magenta and landscape towards green. I would vote both of them to be perfect for photography depending on your colour preference. So it all come down to price..
Thanks for sharing your insights 😊🙏
Hi Xing, thanks for your interesting video. I am considering buying the Sony A7 IV for video and I would like to ask you a question. If I activate all the stabilizations possible in the camera during the shooting phase (even in the zoom lens ), will the video I get slightly decrease in quality? I mean its definition, etc. Thank you.
I don’t think it will affect that much. The stabilization is from the physical sensor. So as long as it is not digital stabilization, that should be fine.
My observations.
1. The Z5 is a lower range than the a7IV, a fairer comparison would be with the Z6ii
2.The a7IV has a sensor with more megapixels and is backlit, which is why it is sharper and manages to have a high dynamic range, which is why images from the Sony are clearer, but that does not mean that it has better dynamic range, because it loses many shadows, although Nikon always makes its RAW files more editable and you can get a lot of detail from the shadows and highlights.
3. Optically they look very good, Sony with Zeiss as an ally managed to reach the level of Nikon, which optically was the best in the DSLR era, but in Colors, Sony still tends to have a lot of Magenta. In fact it looks very magenta, Nikon is a little more balanced but still has a tendency towards green, but that's a thing of the past.
Thanks for sharing your observations 😊🙏
Sony skin tones got better but still to yellow in the face. Canon and Nikon are better.
Thanks for sharing your observations 😊🙏
These two are almost indistinguishable, it's wild.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts 😊🙏
I don't know anything new about the camera, please answer my question I want to use this link Sigma 105mm f1.4 Can I use this lens with Nikon z5 without adapter now?...
Make sure the sigma has Z lens description on the page first. Some sigma lenses are for the old DSLR
Xing liu can u tell me which picture control use on nikon setting ??
Hi, picture control was in Auto, the first option.
Faaa, se re nota como Sony tiene una dominante del color magenta. Vendí mi Sony A7 para volver a Nikon y este video me reafirma mi decisión. Excelente video!. Abrazo de gol!
Thanks for watching 😊🙏
They are almost Identical the only difference is the A7IV has a bit more color in pictures. but feel like this can be achieved in Photoshop or post editing software.
Thanks for sharing your insights 😊
I got 11 right and 4 wrong. The Nikon is rather easy to spot. Their yellows and greens are different and some more (even too much at times) contrast and saturation.
Thanks for sharing your insights 😊🙏
i am a nikon shooter past 6yrs and currently using z6ii but i can clearly see see that sony has better dynamic range, better colour science and are much easier to edit in lightroom with preset and lastly more lens option.
thanks for sharing your insights 😊🙏
Look at the price difference too. The z62 or z72 would perform much better
Most of the images I loved were taken by Nikon Z5, which looks like the big Z mount helps a lot
Thanks for watching 😊🙏
Le Z5 s'en sort très bien ! Ce n'est pas la première fois que je le constate... Pour le prix victoire Nikon.
😊🙏 thanks for watching
Have you notice any striping lines from the Nikon Z5 from the phase detection?
I haven’t noticed the striping lines in Nikon 😊
@@caliallstaring How is the autofocus with the Nikon Z5? I heard mix things about low light autofocus.
Also I heard in low light there are a low of red dots in the EVF and LCD screen.
Sir i am thinking about purchasing z5 or sony alpha iii what should i purchase can you suggest me pls
Hi, from this video, which color do you like better? And also, A7iii has better auto focus performance and more lens choices options.
@@caliallstaring can you tell pls under 1lakh which will be my best option mirrorless camera for photography tell pls 🥺
@@43.sujaydeyxiid Hi A7iii with sigma 85mm f1.4 or Z5 with 85mm f1.8 would be good deal.

What is the first song name. Please bro
Hi, I don’t have the previous recording file currently, it is in backup drive and it is not in my Final Cut Pro X anymore, you can check to use the music listening app to check if it can get the song name 😊
I think Sony got the slightly pink and softer look compare to Nikon which is pretty realistic looking pictures.
Thanks for sharing your insights 😊🙏
Nikon 85 f1.8s lens is just sharp. It was more of a lens comparison.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts 😊🙏
The mere fact that nikon entry level ff camera are compared to A7IV ( a top-tier sony ff camera with superb af ) means that nikon z5 is that good with lesser the price,
Im choosing between z5 & z6II..
my concern is its future proof aspect, since z5 uses old sensor and still no update regarding af improvements as of this posting..
Z6II is good but doubles the price than that of Z5.
Im totally confused what to get..
I want my first camera to last for many years..
I'll mostly focus on photos (wedding,events,portraits) ..
Any advice which one should i get? In terms of long time usage..thank you!
Z5 is very good with the price and still pretty good images quality. If you want more power processor, z6 ii will be the choice, or a used z6 ii if there is a good deal.
@@caliallstaring how about in terms of future proofing?...can z5 still join the competition 5yrs from now?
In terms of tech/features/capabilities?..
I have no doubt in z6II..but if z5 is still good 5yrs from now..then ill go with z5..in terms of AF/lowlight..
Thank you so much!
@@BOUNTYEATER for 5 years, image quality still good, but auto focus will be outdated. For 5 years, go for z6ii
@@caliallstaring thank you much mate, well then z6II it is!
@@BOUNTYEATER no problem :) yes, z6ii will be the long term choices with faster processing.
Those Nikon colors look great .
Thanks for watching 😊🙏
Sony, as usual, gives out a purple color! The camera didn't show anything new. Nikon is twice as cheap - and the quality is the same. Nikon is definitely not inferior in price and quality. It is necessary to invest in lenses!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts 😊🙏
Great video, thank you, I'm just to decide between A7II and Z5, in Mexico, both cost the same, $1,100.00 uscy.
Thanks 😊 if you want better auto focus, Sony is better
Sony jpeg engine is adding warm/magenta hue all over. Almost looks like a filter in some of these and not natural. Maybe that’s desirable for jpeg output and social media.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts 🙏 the new logic in A74 in AWB is leaning more towards warm tones indeed.
i always love your compassion ❤ plz do a comparison between nikon Z5 and fuji XH2 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you so much 😊 I will mark it down 🙏🙌
@@caliallstaring you’re welcome 😇
Hey, awesome portraits as always. Where all the shots in jpeg or raw?
Thank you 😊 all in jpeg.
This was a bit confusing at first but after identifying the character of each camera I just go one wrong.
Thanks for sharing your results 😊🙏
Thank you for this test! I love my nikon z5! Only 2 miss!
Thanks so much for watching 😊🙏
Obviously a huge difference in color tones, the comparison would be easier if the subject was a little closer
Thanks for sharing your feedback 😊🙏
im a7riv and a7sii user and i know very well wich one is sony, and i choose a right pict a whole time!
Thanks for watching 😊🙏
Z5❤
😊👌🏼
I think nikon is more contrast and a bit yellowing
Thanks for sharing the insights 😊🙏
For me the Zeiss lens was far better. I think both lens and sensor are superior on the Sony side, but I would never pay triple for them - I would get the sigma art 24-70 if I had a Sony. I just bought a z5 because I have Nikon lenses already… and I pray for sigma art lenses to come to the z mount….
Thanks for sharing your insights 😊🙏
Agreed. I was looking for this video because people say how good the Z lenses are. The Nikkor Z 85mm 1.8 wasn't even in the same ballpark as the Sony Zeiss lens...
@@314shorts funnily enough I just bought a zeiss lens for my z5. You can get zeiss glass for Nikon but only their manual focus lenses... Still waiting for it to arrive so can't comment how good it is yet, and if it goes well I'll try adapting the sony lenses to z mount using this adapter from a company called megadap
Interesting I thought the opposite. The Nikon lens was sharper and bokeh was much smoother. The zeiss has the soap bubble bokeh. After finishing the video the zeiss is also less flare resistant and loses contrast when backlit
Gracias Xing, personalmente me ha servido para confirmar, que ninguna de las dos tienen la gestión de color que a mí me gusta
No problem 😊 so you might like Canon or Fuji better in terms of colors.
This is the first test where I have consistently preferred the Sony over the competitor. Very surprised (as a Fuji and Canon shooter)
Thanks for watching 😊🙏
Nikon has better lens output, but the Sony body is outperforming the Nikon.
A best combination would be the Nikon lens with the Sony body and an adaptor.
Thanks for sharing your insights 😊🙏
Is it a raw file?
Straight out of camera jpeg
@@caliallstaring Thanks a lot!
Both camera's are on my shopping list
😊👌🏼 nice
@@caliallstaring Yes indeed and so is the Panasonic S5
Nikon best, nikon forever!)
😊👌🏼
La Z5 es la mejor cámara hoy, no solo de Nikon, atendiendo por supuesto a la ecuación precio-prestaciones. Con un buen entrenamiento y lentes nativos de esta fantástica montura, es posible cubrir prácticamente todos los escenarios.
Thanks for sharing your insights
I am guessing the videos are from the A7IV, am I right ?
Videos are from iPhone 13 Pro Max 😊
ok, it's easy to find from magenta one, but i still missed 2 😁
😊👌🏼
Better lenses for sure, but I have the feeling that Nikon has already processed the raw‘s
Thanks for sharing your thoughts 😊🙏
Nikon has cold but more saturated greens, whereas Sony's greens are slightly flat or warmer.
Thanks for sharing your observations 😊🙏
Nikon has better colour accuracy but the Sony has better dynamic range. The blacks are too dark on the nikon and overall the image looks too contrasty straight out of the camera especially in low light situations.
Thanks for sharing your insights 🙏😊
Nikon always blows out the lights, check rhe ridge of the building, the metering matrix isn't good as sony or other manufacturers. Otherwise the z5 is a great little camera for the price. Nikon should really works on it's metering algo
Thanks for sharing your observations 😊🙏
The bokeh gave it away for me. :D
😊👌🏼
Nikon is much sharper? Is it because the lens?
It might be
i find jpegs from nikon look more interesting
👌🏼😊
Nikon just killed it!
🙏😊
I think the most significant difference between these two cameras is in video. The a7 IV just stomps all over the Z5, but, given the price difference, it should.
The other important difference is the burst rate. If you're just doing portraits like this, then that probably won't matter so much. But, if you're trying to capture sports or wildlife, the burst rate on the a7 IV can make all the difference in capturing that perfect moment.
Thanks for sharing your insights 😊🙏
Guessed all of them correctly. Nikon has a strong yellow/green tint, even when compared with Sony, which is quite an achievement (in a negative way). But at least it's consistent with tint, so it might be possible to negate it with some AWB bias adjustment. On the other hand, Nikon less is way more resistant to flare, although I find Sony bokeh a bit more pleasing.
Thanks for watching and sharing your insights. Yeah, I was surprised that Nikon even has more green tint than Sony. And yes, we can use the adjustment towards lower right side white balance shift to avoid less green tint.
Nikon has always been that way, even when it's only real contender was Canon. Canon makes more stylistic choices from body to body. The R was crazy green where as the RP was more natural. The R5 is warmer, and the R6 is natural.
@@-grey it's strange if it's like that. Like they are choosing to have wrong AWB meting on purpose.
@@tomapaunovic I think it's a software fix for a hardware quirk, and they just over correct. I believe it's because the sensors have a magenta cast, or the glass, I don't remember exactly. Fujifilm has the opposite problem, they get very magenta skin hues.
@@-grey Fuji can error to magenta, but most often they get it right. While the Nikon seems to be off all the time.
Nik is always more greenish.
Thanks for sharing your observations 😊🙏
Easy. I look in the "more green" photo. And missed no one.
Thanks for sharing your observations 😊🙏
A have a new name for this video - “Fight between green and magenta” 😅 Sony wins for the info in shadows 😎 Beautiful girl wins, though 😅

Im shocked at how bad nikons colours made the model look…always thought nikon had good colours…to lose this hard vs. Sony is shocking to me..
Thanks for sharing your observations and insights 😊🙏
honestly, sony's pursuit to copy canon's color science made its color too warm and orangey. the shadow also isn't as marvellous as nikon's. see the crevices on the sweater.

This was very very underwhelming photoshoot. It became ridiculously obvious which was which right from the first picture. Photoshoot done in different setting would have been a little challenging. It is obvious Nikon does some stuff to make the subject colours pop.
