Thanks for posting. I've been a guitar player since 1979 & just picked up my first mandolin about 2 hours ago & found your video. I have to clean up my playing but I am playing the song .
Nice lesson, made a fair run at it as soon as I picked up my mandolin. Just got Going to California under my belt and this one is a natural one to follow up with.
This is the best video for learning this song I've seen anywhere. I watched Nancy Wilson do her version, but she doesn't really explain it very well. I followed everything pretty well until the fourth part, then I couldn't tell what you were doing with some of the phrases. I'm blind, so I think some of it was shown, but not described.
By barring the B and D strings and then playing the open A and E it allows people like me with fat stubby fingers to play to play that chord with all the strings ringing. Great Tip! Thanks…
Jon Paul Jones wrote it..It's obvious watching the 2 play. JP Jones is far more accomplished as a Mando player. IF you listen closely to the original recording... it's 2 mandolins, thus the confusion over some of the chords.
I saw JPJ close up on his solo tour a number of years back. Not only is he an extraordinary bassist but also a great mando player and slide player. Many custom instruments played: mandolin, octave mandolin, "the" triple neck, standard slide and bass slide and many basses with different stringing. Definitely the 'guitar hero' that night. And not forgetting keyboards. Truly gifted and probably unequalled.
Love playing my mando. I don't know jack $h1+ about theory, but just enough to know that the triads of some chords have notes that are part of other chords. When he talks about B and F# this rings that bell. And because I the mandolin has only 4 open note strings, inversions of chords sound like other chords. This, along with the fact that the mandolin's strings are tuned and octave above the corresponding guitar strings give the mando it's different subtle character.
Butch is right the dominant mandolin playing in all of Zeps studio & live tunes is all John paul Jones, jimmy only played it live to accompany John's virtuosity in the very early days where John would play a soloing type of style over jimmy. The only reason jimmy plays it on battle of evermore is because its all chordal the rest of their repertoire like going to california, thats the way, hey hey what can I do, and battle of evermore (studio version) is all John Paul Jones. On the studio version of battle of evermore, that is John Paul playing all the (doubled) mandolin parts with jimmy only playing acoustic guitar. How do I know? Didn't read it somewhere just my ears listening to the level of ability being applied on the instrument tells me its John's mandolin work we are hearing. Amazing player: think about it bassist, guitarist, mandolin, piano, mellotron, organ with footwork, and orchestral arranger
Would suggest Page doesn't use his thumb over the G&D strings for the Am G Am C parts, but does for the 3rd part of the song playing D, going down in the G position as you called it 7:27 which makes it far easier for those runs. Thanks so much for you help in this.
You built that mandolin? Sounds absolutely amazing! I've been in the business of old mandolins and Lloyd Loars for over 20 years so I can vouch for the fact that your mandolin rips!
Is that a Gibson “F” style mandolin? A bit of trivia is the Gibson “F” style mandolin was the original inspiration for the white guitar Prince used at the end of the movie "Purple Rain." In the 70s a man named Jeffrey Levin made a Bass guitar based on the look of the Gibson. He did not like it and he put it up for sale. In 1979ish, Prince bought it. In 1983, when they were getting ready to make the movie they took the bass to a man named David Rusan to make a guitar version as a prop for the movie. On a side note the song "Purple Rain" was mostly recorded live at the night club from the movie and he used a Mad Cat Hohner telecaster knock off...
I'm not sure the F# along with the barred G & D works for me on the verse, I think it might work in instr sections. Verse is Am which is why D & G are barred.
On Harp Guitar tuned ln low A s( as averse to high Es) put a Joe Walsh song up and 30 views tuned in A ,I got copyright " flag' ,while the great Canadian musician Jamie Dupuis, put the same up on harp guitar to something like 68,000 views.I myself enjoy tuning Fiddle and Mandolin to Contralto D ,or D A E B.Old Chris a retired fiddler of Albuquerque NM
YOur mandolin is such a beautiful instrument that, putting that orange strap over the curl really detracts it's beauty. It's like musicians who put duct tape and stickers on a Gibson ES-semi hollow guitar with F-holes.
I’m hearing it differently. It’s confusing to people think because of the delay and Page’s variations and improvising in the studio ruclips.net/user/shortskBuxrKHbmWc?si=HJzgWMwPdZl71vKA
Not Jimmy, but John Paul Jones played the mandoline in this song. I love the version from Nancy Wilson, found here : ruclips.net/video/FMyn1ItURys/видео.html. Starts at 2:22.
Nancy Wilson does an amazing interpretation of this. Lots of finesse. She basically replicates the studio version, which is overdubbed at least once if not twice, and does it live. ruclips.net/video/FMyn1ItURys/видео.html
I hate censorship...everybody has to think the same? Cant post something someone may not like...and who decided that? Censorship is communistic....except for cases of vulgar profanity and explicit hate jargon!!

just got my first mandolin and this lesson has got me sounding decent already! thank you so much!!!
Excellent job with your playing and explanation - very helpful and a real treat to watch. Thank you.
This is the lesson that I will learn it from, when I get a mandolin. I love it!
THANK YOU - your note in the second part makes it sound right, and I'd been missing it. Very grateful.
this would be a good excerise to practice mandolin for. im learning mandolin always looking for something new

Page often used his thumb to fret the low strings. He mentions it in an interview in the 80’s.
So I'm not seeing things? Thanks.

You are the only guy that has this right on the Internet. Thanks, Boulder.
Excellent and informative video. And you seem to a great guy, too! 😷
The weird chord with the F# note is A6. Sometimes a 2nd mandolin or guitar plays Am during it as well.
Been searching so hard for this!!! Thank you!
You're welcome.
Loved . Can’t wait for practice time
Nice job, Dude! Thanks for the lesson!
Thanks! I wish they had done more songs on mandolin.
That sucks they pulled your first video. RUclips is very stupid lately. Great video none the less!
Nice catch. You're right.
Thank you Sir! Very helpful
Excellent!...I am learning this one now.........Thx........:)
if copy right Gods make you pull it you must be doing something amazing!! haha too talented for RUclips

finally, someone who knows

The sheet music says 3 mandolins, one of which is double tracked.

Thank you for the lesson, Mr. White. #breakingbad
You can call me Walter

He seems to vary his approach to this song. Here's a video where he uses his thumb. ruclips.net/video/9xfy9W9my_w/видео.html
Yes he does. He’s said so himself.
You can find JP doing it

Thank you for your kind words.
Fantastic video! Thank you for this. Do you by any chance have a tab for it?
Great video but please show or tab the two lead lines slowly..
Just slow the video down.

Nice job..
Any hints on websites to learn mandolin chords?
So Jimmy Page is now the Richie Havens of mandolin!
Enjoyed the video. Thanks!
Cool. Glad you liked it.
Either way pretty awesome lesson thanks !

Thanks so much!

The "F" means Fancy..
@@budzlightyear2212 and it is indeed fancy...and now iconic.

@@budzlightyear2212 Hello, it is not my video, I jusst mentioned that the one used was same style that inspired Prince's "Purple Rain guitar"
It’s one of my own builds
Nice job!
Great video, thanks!!, you remind me a bit of Walter White 😂
Actually I get that a lot... Breaking Bad....great series. Check this out ruclips.net/video/AC9jRCf6KbE/видео.html

You missed lots out. What happed to the whole chorus??????
I am happy that people like you still remember good music, not like now, just music shit
This sounds incredible on a 12 string bowlback !
Good video, wish you would show your picking hand 😓
