  • I love the look of laser cut wood... I love resin art... and I love playing with designing light fixtures. I was recently watching the movie Tangled (aka: Rapunzel) and felt inspired by all the luminaries in the film; There is something about luminaries that feels cozy, and inviting. I've seen amazing paper laser cut luminaries done and I wanted to take it up a notch and use wood and epoxy resin to make it my own; Here's how it went!

      Thanks so much for watching! This build started out with only a vague concept and no rigid plan. I’m really happy with where it landed

      Thanks John! I thought this up and liked the idea of taking something really basic/ accessible and leveling it up.

    If you had a clear acrylic sheet to put on top of the paper and press it down while you take the scan, maybe you get less wrinkels

    As someone that understands how much effort all that digital editing takes to get a good file.. Wow, good job. As someone that secretly enjoys finding problems so I can fix them, this video was like crack!

      My brain exactly. I love the rabbit hole that is prototyping, particularly with digital files. This particular build could have “rabbit-holed” for 18 more versions if I let it but I needed to cut myself off somewhere... but it was a hard urge to fight. Phew.

    Great video, love the creativity and the problem solving with the design and challenges of the wood, I think poplar can be a really beautiful wood but it definitely has its struggles but fantastic end product 👍

      Thank you! I have polar a hard time here but I’m actually really looking forward to picking it up again in the future for something different. It just wasn’t the best pick for this particular build

    jello shot syringes work really well to add the resin into small spaces

    • @MakersWorkshopLLC
      @MakersWorkshopLLC  3 года назад

      I’ve used syringes before for doing inlays and it’s a great solution. I was being lazy on this one and went at it with a paint stirrer. The syringes would have probably gone more quickly though.

    Awesome build and video Brook! I was laughing because I use poplar ALL THE TIME so I'm glad it got some redemption at the end of the video...kinda...maybe?

    • @MakersWorkshopLLC
      @MakersWorkshopLLC  3 года назад +1

      It’s... it’s... fine. It’s fine. It gets a C+. It was definitely not the right pick for this particular project Bc of the level of detail. 100% I’ll use it again. I want to redeem it.

    How about using Unicorn Spit on the poplar. It may add some magic to it.

      So the key is good old fashioned practice. Need to get something off the bottom shelf at the grocery store? Practice. Need to tie your shoes? PRACTICE. Dropped a pen? Praaaactice. You’ve got this.

    You are super smart. I just ordered a glowforge today. I'm not design savvy at all. So I truly hope I'm able to make beautiful things like you. I love your videos if you have any helpful tips for me please share.

      @MakersWorkshopLLC  3 года назад

      Always happy to share; and don’t worry you’ve got this 👊. The Glowforge in particular is easy to get up and running for users with any level of experience. The best design tip I can give is to look for iPad apps. (if you have an iPad). There are a lot of free and great apps out there if you take the time to look for what you need. Additionally: start small. There’s no pressure to design anything more complex than a circle cut out if that’s where you’re starting from. It’s learning a whole new skill and the hardest part is giving deciding to learn something new at all :)

      Oh; and shameless self plug: we make all of our digital files available at MakersWorkshop.com ; $10/month for unlimited access. If you see something you like the file is over there ready to pop into a machine and go 👍🏻

      There’s plenty in there that I think make a great starting point. All of these lanterns are in there too. Especially without the resin they’re a great potential “first project”

    hi dear magician nice work done :) kindly share what glue type material did you added in gaps of wood to give it frosted glass look

    • @MakersWorkshopLLC
      @MakersWorkshopLLC  3 года назад

      It's not glue that gave the frosted look to the resin. I sanded the resin up to a 220 grit, and dipped these in mineral oil to get this look.

    Also where do you get the sheets of 1/8’’ wood that you have

  • @smittybuilds52

    What are some of your sources for exotic woods? I have been looking for laser ready exotic woods and that seems pretty difficult.

    • @MakersWorkshopLLC
      @MakersWorkshopLLC  3 года назад

      Proof grade from Glowforge is decent. Downsides are limited sizes and it has an mdf core. Johnson plastics has a great wide range of engineered woods specifically made for the laser, which gives very consistent results. We also buy a lot of stuff rough and mill our own. Value wise if you have the capacity to do it that way, it’s WELL worth it. However the other options take less time and fewer tools.

    where do you get the thin poplar that you have?

    Where do you buy these thin and well sanded sheets of wood? 🧐🧐🧐🧐

    • @MakersWorkshopLLC
      @MakersWorkshopLLC  3 года назад +1

      I know a guy 😏. And by that I mean we opportunity buy a lot of it if a good deal comes up so there’s not one source. However if you google “machine ready” or “project ready” wood you should be able to find some stuff. It’s more expensive naturally, but for some things well worth it. I hope that helps.

      We are currently working on a redesign of MakersWorkshop.com that will have a membership for files available. It was *supposed* to be up and running for the new year, but we ran into a couple of last second snags. I think we will do a RUclips video announcing it so that everyone can know when it’s ready

    Can I make a suggestion. It may or may not work. Cut the design... pour the resin.... sand... then cut the box joints?
