Julie Andrews, Robert Preston, and Lesley Anne Warren all got Oscar noms for this film.
This is one of the BEST movies to watch late at night. Absolutely hilarious and warmhearted. Leslie Anne Warren was especially funny. Never get tired of watching this film. Thank you both for reacting to this unknown gem.
My favorite Blake Edwards movie! It stars his wife Julie Andrews and his casting of the other characters was brilliant. Alex Karras was the bodyguard, he was also Mongo in Blzing Saddle.
Yeah, that was my bit of trivia, that she and Blake Edwards were married.
"They didn't shoot a real horse. Just a costume with two waiters in it." 😂
He had so many great lines in this movie. RIP Preston.
You can't deny that Julie Andrews looks very sharp in a suit.
My favorite character is, by a wide margin, Squash. He's (ironically) the straight man is this wacky tale.
Julie Andrews looks good in anything, I think.
Mongo/Squash only pawn in game of life.
Looove this film!! I was lucky enough to see it in the theater back in ‘82 sitting next to my mom. We both thought this was fantastic!
I stumbled across it on HBO or Showtime around 1986 or so, which would have been approximately 8th grade for me. It was the perfect movie at the perfect time to broaden my horizons. I remember being amazed at how hard I was rooting for everybody in the movie. It's been one of my very favorite comedies ever since.
Me scrolling RUclips like "there is nothing on RUclips. Oh wait, it's a new episode, First Time Film Club! Victor, Victoria! I love this movie!"
This movie is such a treat. Julie Andrews is just beyond perfection, as always.
"If he's a Polish count, I'm Greta Garbo."
"Well, Greta, whatever he is, I think he's divine."
One these guys is Blake and Julie's son.
Did you know that Julie and Lesley Ann had a musical role in common? Rogers and Hammerstein's Cinderella. Julie played the lead in 1957 (it was written with her in mind) and Lesley in 1965 (her first lead role). And I agree you should react to The Music Man. Robert was fantastic as Prof. Harold Hill.
Ah yes. Gentlemen Prefer Blondes would be awesome. Moonstruck might also make for a nice reaction.
moonstruck. definitely.
She would love Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.
@@Lensmaster1 And also Some Like It Hot!
Certainly my favorite Blake Edwards film. Love this film! Now you need to see The Music Man, Robert Preston’s most famous role.
We got trouble. Right here in River City! 🎺
@@mcjim256 I was in the play so it holds a special place for me.
The fourth greatest Julie Andrews film (after MARY POPPINS, THE SOUND OF MUSIC, and VICTOR/VICTORIA) that nobody knows about is STAR! (1968), a bio-pic of musical comedy star Gertrude Lawrence. It's a forgotten treasure trove of excellent musical performances by Julie at the peak of her abilities.
A bit of a forgotten gem by Blake Edwards is "S.O.B", which is a hilarious satire of Hollywood in the 70's to early 80's. Based on Edwards' own career, it has a star cast, including Julie Andrews doing something that our titular hostess might very much approve of. It's a bit darker in tone than Victor/Victoria, which might be why it didn't hit the box office all that high, but it's still IMO one of Blake Edwards' best movies, right next to his first 3 Pink Panther movies.
I second the recommendation for S.O.B. Hilarious flick.
I also endorse the recommendation of S.O.B
Robert Preston is also in it, but it's Richard Mulligan who steals the film, for me.
Another vote for S.O.B. it is a must-see. Dark and hilarious and nearly everyone in Hollywood appears in it in some form. And it was famous when it came out for being the film in which Julie Andrews goes topless!
I so love SOB for Robert Preston's great lines. "I could sue you for that, Polly. A shyster is a disreputable lawyer. I'm a quack!"
MUSIC MAN PLEASE! 🎺🎶🥁
Original 1957
The title might be inspired by the Ed Wood film Glen Or Glenda 1953
10 out of 10
@@VictorD80 Nope. VICTOR/VICTORIA was based on an old German film, VIKTOR UND VICTORIA (1933).
@@oliverbrownlow5615 I'm not saying this film is based on Ed Wood's disaster. I'm just noting the similarity of the titles. So, nope yourself.
"Don't make it sound so much like a threat. Being thrown out of this place is significantly better than being thrown out of a lepor colony."
I am so happy you enjoyed this! 😂 It's been one of my favorites since childhood.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. Thank you SO MUCH for reacting to this...not many channels do.
Fun fact: The dress that Julie wore for Shady Dame was the *same* dress that Robert wore for the number at the end. They only had a specific amount of that particular fabric, so they had to make the dress to fit Robert and then take it in to fit Julie.
"Victor/Victoria" and "S.O.B." go together like a double feature. So check out "S.O.B."
Can't believe that you didn't recognize Robert Preston as the star of the 1962 movie, The Music Man! 😊
If you need more Robert Preston you should go check out him and Mrs Partridge (Shirley Jones) and Buddy Hacket in The Music Man. So fun.
you know my childhood is full of movies and series like this. I must say I couldn't be more grateful to my parents for not paying attention to a lick of what I watched!!! (they were soooo conservative)
Yes he's in Indiana Jones AND he's the dwarf Gimli in the LoTR trilogy
And Viscount Mabrey, the villain in Princess Diaries 2.
Oh my God, I've died and gone to heaven. I can't wait until she sees Lesley Ann Warren...
❤James Garner was great in everything he did. You two would love Born Yesterday 1950. Judy Holliday was the original Norma type character and it is hilarious.
Born Yesterday is a great movie.
I’ll make the suggestion that Jean Harlow in 1933’s Dinner at Eight was the first Norma-type character. Just watch the last scene in the film, when she and Marie Dressler are walking into the dining room. One of the funniest final exchanges in film history!
If you're going to watch Judy Holliday, you should watch her best film: BELLS ARE RINGING (1960).
You need to watch Julie Andrews and Robert Preston in "S.O.B." (1981), also directed by Blake Edwards. An extremely funny film that deserves to be much better known than it is.
I love this film. Blake Edwards was a genius directing comedies. Everyone remembers 'Victor/Victoria' and the Pink Panther movies but they forget some of his other films. Two of my favorite are 'Operation Petticoat', set in WWII, with Cary Grant and Toy Curtis trying to get a pink submarine out of Japanese controlled waters, and 'The Great Race', with Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, and Natalie Wood, in a land race from New York to Paris in the early 20th century. Pure comedy, the both of them.
THE GREAT RACE is awesome! We need more people to see and react to that. So good.
I didn't know he directed Operation Petticoat. Great movie
James Garner was the star of the wildly popular late 1950's, early 1960's TV series "Maverick" about a riverboat and Western gambler. Also star of the wildly popular, long-running 1970's TV series "The Rockford Files" in which he portrayed a gumshoe detective who lived on the beach in a trailer.
OMG this is one of my favorite films. I'm so excited that you guys got to react to this film together. I had such a crush on James Garner. The musical aspect with the quirky humor is so amazing.
Emily: I need a fur-lined robe.
Matthew: (Looks at Pippin)
I love all the reactions but that moment right there was pure gold.
I see you guys opening up a lovely club such as this just to set the stage for all the gowns you would wear.❤❤❤
one of the great tragedies- when Julie lost her singing voice after that surgery. Great Film!!!!!!
This is the first time I've sent one of these... this reaction brought a huge smile to my face. This was an important movie for me... as I said in my other comment there were a lot of other LGBT films that were released year and those films along with this one really helped me get through my own coming out process as a slightly confused 20-year-old. It gave me a theme song for my life (Crazy World) and my favorite quote ever (" Shame is an unhappy emotion invented by pietists"). Thank you both so much for watching and including this film on your very long list. ❤
David, thank you so much for your generosity and support! I'm so very glad that this film and others like it have been such a balm for you! It is a truly great movie and I look forward to seeing more like it!
Much love and hugs!
Emily 🥰
@@JustSUMMReactions Joe, I just discovered you guys, and it’s a few days past July 4th, but I highly recommend the musical 1776 (from 1972). It’s in my top 5 of all time.
One of the best scenes is the the credits for Robert Preston. He falls back into the arms of the matador on the floor and the matafor smacks him affectionately on the head. Great !!
You definitely need to see The Music Man!
Agreed!!
These absolutely fantastic old movies are so rarely picked-up in reaction and it such a shame because there are tons of stunning old movie. Another tip for rare gem - and I guarantee you will be crying from laughter - Arsenic and Old Lace form 1944 wit Cary Grant.
They might need to watch the original Frankenstein first. ;)
This was one of 3 go-to movies that I wanted to rent every time I went to Blockbuster as a child (to give you a hint how old I am). As an adult now, I wonder what my parents thought of it, but it is still hilarious, and the musical numbers are amazing!
Oh, gawd, I LOVE this flick and it doesn't get anywhere near as much love as it deserves!! And until now, I don't think I've seen any RUclips reacters watching it.
This reaction is delightful! ruclips.net/video/1WjTsX1y2A4/видео.html
This is always been one of my favorite movies. I was also very fortunate to see Julie Andrews in the Broadway production of V/V that opened in 1995 at the Marriott Marquis theater in New York.
Blake Edwards had a perfect hand at the continuous scene play. He did it in the Pink Panther; he did it here as well. He was also the perfect producer for the musical style 60's and 70's movies. This was his last entry of this type in the early 80's. Both my sister and I love this movie to this very day.
We used to watch it back in the VCR days at least once a month. We were just so hooked on it.
For me the ruffian bar scene was probably the most sophisticated yet least wordy version to start a bar fight. I only needed to quote "Milk!" and my sister would break into goggles.😂😂
As noted below, Alex Karras, who played Squash, was Mongo in "Blazing Saddles".
Julie Andrews really was "gifted", which she showed in the movie "SOB", another Blake Edwards film. Blake was also Julie's husband. Alex Karas being one of the biggest and toughest football players of all time turned actor, his contemporary ball players found it hilarious and good-heartily gave him a lot of teasing. Always look forward to when y'all do comedy just for Emily's laugh.
Lmao
"Why do i have to die?" "Don't worry about it!" Lmao
The second hand joy that I experienced watching you both react to this was delicious! This was a staple of weekend watching. Would also recommend a very old throwback "Zorro, the Gay Blade", which is equally hilarious, alas, not a musical, but still a fun watch! Hi Pippin!❤
You really should watch "S.O.B." from 1981, again by Blake Edwards and starring Julie Andrews, Robert Preston and Richard Mulligan. It's a hilarious movie!
03:02: That zoom in, that laugh, that disapproving look. I love this movie, but I already know I'm going to have a great time!
13:14: "I think it's as simple as you're one kind of man, and I'm another. One who doesn't *have* to prove it. To you, or anyone else."
These are still words I live by.
23:44: "I don't care if you are a man." (KISS!) "I'm not a man." "I still don't care." (KISS AGAIN!)
I'm straight, but this moment still speaks to my heart.
A movie that kind of gave me similar vibes to this is "D.E.B.S." It may just be my weird brain, but I feel like they hit some similar emotional beats.
Thank you so much! This is one of my favorite films! It was great to see both Cinderellas in this film together. Julie Andrews played the original Cinderella in Rogers & Hammerstein's Cinderella (1957) and Lesley Ann Warren played Cinderella in Rogers & Hammerstein's Cinderella (1965).
So it's a joy to see them both together in this film as well as the rest of this amazing cast.
As soon as I saw this on my feed, I was like "Oh, Em is going to LOVE this movie." As do I.
Ah, yes, my favorite cinematographer of all time, Dick Bush. The man has quite a wide and long list of great movies he's been in.
A wooden leg named Smith ... A wooden leg named Smith ...
Delightful reaction to this terrific farce. I think this is Blake Edwards' masterpiece. Nearly everything he directed before, especially the Pink Panther movies, The Great Race, and Breakfast at Tiffany's were setting him up for this piece. And while I loved Julie Andrews as an actress even as a kid, I never fully appreciated the remarkable range of her voice until I was older. What an extraordinary instrument, and so tragic how she lost it due to a botched operation.
I will just say, I haven't been able to watch the channel much lately as I haven't seen a lot of the movies that you have chosen to react to, but I still appreciate both of you for going for so many deep cuts. Don't ever change.
One of my favorite movies! Loved your reaction😂🥰🤣
This is definitely my favorite film of Blake Edwards. It combines contemporary themes with sophisticated comedy, farce, and slapstick, all wrapped up with terrific songs beautifully performed. I think that “Crazy World” is Mancini’s best.
Still one of my favourites. I still haven't got over that guy falling off the stool. Some films just come together.
Another very entertaining Blake Edwards and Julie Andrews movie is S.O.B. It's got just about every celebrity from the late 70's/Early 80's in a Hollywood hijinks movie.
Trivia bits! The waiter from the cockroach scene and later is also Clousseau’s police sgt (?) in the Pink Panther movies. James Garner’s bodyguard is Alex Karras, who was Mongo in Blazing Saddles!
The final scene with toddy taking Victoria's place on stage was completely improvised.
Is this the most Emily movie ever? She was dead on predicting the dialogue several times and dying laughing throughout
OMG been waiting for this forever!! So happy you’re watching this!!!
Same Here
Same same
The guy playing Kings' bodyguard is Alex Karras whom played Mongo in Blazing Saddles. Also, check out Robert Preston in The Music Man an absolute classic of a musical. So good, even the Beatles covered a song from it.😊
Just an FYI Andres was also in the Broadway play this was based on and reprised the role in 1995 when she got sick and lost the ability to sing all those different notes
14:24 I haven’t seen this in years. I forgot how hilarious the dialogue is. Blake Edwards and the cast were definitely on their A game.
When you said you liked Robert Preston in The Last Starfighter, I suggested The Music Man.
This is good too!
First of all i absolutely love Leslie Ann Warren 😊....and i search RUclips high and low looking for reactions to great movies like this saw this for the first time when i was just a little girl in the 80s😁....love Julie Andrews.Definitely one of my all time favorite movies thank you so much...i love watching younger ppls reactions to my old favorites...Victor/Victoria is a true masterpiece and you guys do so good at covering the classics😊
Aww... One of my comfort movies. So many one liners. Thanks for reacting to this classic.
We've got Trouble with a capital 'T' that rhymes with 'P' that stands for Pool.
...I've probably got that wrong from memory... but I definitely second the vote for that watch along.
I believe Lesley Ann Warren received a Best Supporting Actress nomination for this movie.
Fun fact: The Shady Dame from Seville dress was made for Robert Preston (Toddy), but it had cinching to fit Julie Andrews (Victoria).
I also think his "you b*tches" line was improvised.
This was first the movie, then made into a Broadway play. Julie Andrew's starred on Broadway. Blake Edward's was also her husband.
A friend and I went to see this in the movie theater. I knew nothing about other than James Garner and Julie Andrews. Love them both. When Robert Preston did the final stage act I literally fell out of my seat with laughter. It’s a little known jewel of a movie.
Blake Edwards also made a crime drama called “Experiment in Terror”, filmed in black and white, that is ssoo good!
Experiment in Terror is a GREAT thriller.
@@johnmoreland6089 so glad someone else knows of this movie. The music is great at raising tension. It should be on suspense lovers much watch list.
I knew you'd love this film. Yes, watch "The Music Man" and look for a very young Ron Howard.
Completely different in style and tone, and yet remarkably related to VICTOR/VICTORIA in its subject matter, was Barbra Streisand's musical YENTL (1983).
Emily enjoyed this fabulous movie way too much…and I’m glad I was here for it.
Shoutout to the patron who made this happen! I can't believe how all my favorite reaction channels whiff on this movie every Pride Month. I think it's one of the greatest comedies ever made, which necessarily makes it one of the greatest queer films ever made. I don't know how it stays under the radar these days. It's a classic, and extremely progressive.
This is a wonderful movie. Great acting, singing, etc. Leslie Ann Warren won a well-deserved Oscar for best Supporting Actress for this film.
Sadly, along with Julie Andrews and James Garner, Lesley Ann Warren was nominated for an Oscar, but didn't win. Only Henry Mancini and Leslie Bricusse won for their original song score. Julie won at the Golden Globes, though
Julie Andrews and James Garner first co-starred in The Americanization of Emily, one of the first comedy/drama's with a anti-war theme, taking place during WWII. They remained close friends until Garner's passing.
Thanks to Emily, Matthew and Pippin! 💃 I love this one so much. Kudos to director Blake Edwards.
It makes me happy to see someone enjoy this movie as much as I do. I've seen it dozens of times and it never gets old. Love the songs and the whole cast is remarkable. Now you must watch S.O.B. You'll love it!
Julie Andrews also did a very gay-friendly TV movie, co- starring with Ann-Margaret in OUR SONS (1991), a story about two women whose sons are dying of AIDS.
I think you two would get a kick out of Mrs. Henderson, starring Bob Hoskins and Dame Judy Dench.
It is kind of The Producers meets Victor Victoria.
Love the fact that Blake Edwards always use's his stock cast of supporting actors, many of whom are British TV comic stars. But the film is just so clever and Robert Preston and Leslie Anne Warren steal every scene. Leslie almost managed to steal the movie LIFE STINKS from Mel Brooks.
Best way to start a fight in a bar:
1. Ask for milk.
2. When one guy inquires, "Cows milk or mothers milk?"
3. You reply, "How about your sisters?"
If you liked Robert Preston in this movie, you will love "The Music Man". (with Shirley Jones and a very young Ron Howard)
TORCH SONG TRILOGY (1988) opens with a drag show you'd surely appreciate.
This is the second time Julie Andrews and James Garner starred in a film together, The first one is The Americanization of Emily (1964). It is an anti-war movie. Both Julie and James said it is their favorite of their films.
This is the second time Julie Andrews worked with Robert Preston. They both starred in S.O.B. in 1981, a year before this movie. It also was written and directed by Blake Edwards
The reaction at 3:00 and Matthew's glance, sheer brilliance 😆😆
Such a great film. It is actually a remake of a 1933 German film called Viktor und Viktoria, which was remade in 1935 in Britain as First a Girl.
Strangest case Jim Rockford ever worked.
Julie, Robert and Leslie Anne all nominated for Oscars.
Robert Preston also starred in The Music Man with Shirley Jones. If you like musicals, it's a classic. Did you notice that the bodyguard was played by Alex Karras, the same actor who played Mongo in Blazing Saddles?
You might want to check out Lesley Ann Warren in _Cinderella_ too.
I have watched this movie more than any other movie. I know all the words not just to the songs but the spoken parts too. I know, i need a life. 😂😂
One of my favourite Saturday or Sunday morning, watch while having my morning coffee kind of movie.
best thing i ever saw Robert Preston did was a an old, old, 1970s PBS special-- "The Man Who Corrupted Hadelyberg," an adaptation of an old Mark Twain story. Fred Gwinn co-starred with him and it was just a fantastic performance all around. It ends a little abruptly, i'd say because of budget (hell, Henry Fonda introduced it), but a good performance.
in some other universe, Robert Preston was given his own anthology series where he played a trickster god, standing over the smouldering wreckage of his handiwork as he narrates tales of hubris and pride.
Wow, that sounds interesting. Imdb says it was made in 1980, and is only a short film, running just 37 minutes. I think this was part of a series of Mark Twain adaptations made for PBS around that time.
@@oliverbrownlow5615 my memories are not what they were, but thank you for the clarification
One of our all-time favorites. Glad you enjoyed it.
Blake had said at the time that if their doctor was as good a doctor as he was an actor, they would not be alive today.
You guys!!! I'm so happy you're reacting to this movie! 😆💗🖖🏽
Hi Just SUMM I Love your reactions and comments especially for Victor/Victoria .....a favorite of mine from way back. I enjoyed this so much I actually went online looking to get Emily that fancy fake fur robe that Lesley Ann Warren was wearing . It is sad that the only one I found was $335.00 only one left and it didn't mention what size it was in ETSY in the original White . I was looking for it in black for you since I notice you usually wear dark colors .
If I knew how to sew I would make you one ....your channel brightens up some dark days for me and I appreciate Emily, Matthew& Pippen. Thank you very much for your channel .
How can you not love Julie Andrews, and yes her voice. 👌
The part of the detective was DEFINITELY written for Peter Sellers.
