2016 Jeep Compass | CarGurus Test Drive Review

  • As recently as the mid-2000s, automakers were putting out mediocre vehicles, and at that time an idea on paper such as a crossover hadn't really been built. That was the climate when the Jeep Compass arrived in 2007. The 2016 Jeep Compass improves on those original efforts while still showing its age.
So why get the 2016 Jeep Compass? Because the latest crop of crossovers can get pricey. The Compass starts at $19,695, and the midrange Latitude trim, which comes pretty well equipped, starts at $23,995. Its other major rivals (CR-V, Cherokee, Escape) all start at around the Latitude's price, but adding options can drive the price well past $30,000. Our test Compass stickered at $28,610.
That’s the context in which the Jeep Compass should be considered. Sure, it’s at the back of the pack now, but it came from a dark time in the industry, and updates over the years have turned the Compass into a competent vehicle-and one you can get at a significant discount relative to its competition.
    Read more on CarGurus: cargur.us/bXPmx
The Compass shows its age in many ways, but Jeep has managed to keep this crossover competent in the red-hot CUV segment.
Small, car-based SUVs are the hottest, fastest growing corner of the new-car market, and they now make up the largest segment in the market, too. These vehicles combine the driving mannerisms of a car, the cargo space of a wagon, and the commanding driving position of an SUV. Most of them are incredibly competent, but this wasn’t always the case.
As recently as the mid-2000s, automakers were putting out mediocre vehicles, and at that time an idea on paper such as a crossover hadn't been fleshed out in practice. That was the climate when the Jeep Compass arrived in 2007. The 2016 Jeep Compass improves on those original efforts while still showing its age.
But there is still value in the Compass, and in a market where crossover prices are creeping upward, the aged Compass can offer value as a discount option, with incentives likely available.

It's easy for some of you to trash this vehicle in the comments. My question is, do you actually OWN one? If you've never actually lived behind the wheel of anything, your opinions don't carry much weight. I DO own a 2014 Compass Sport 4x4. I have put 30,000 miles in the vehicle and it's been an excellent car. It drives very well, has decent acceleration, does fantastic on north Idaho winter roads, and has been capable and reliable. A lot of you are missing the point when you compare it to these other vehicles. Sure, the Crosstrek, the Rav4, or even the Cherokee are better cars in many respects. But that doesn't make the Compass a BAD car. The fact is, the Compass costs $ thousands less than the vehicles you're comparing the Compass to. If I spend thousands more, it damn well better be a better car. The point is summed up at the end of the video. If you're forced, by your economic reality, to buy a cheaper car, you're not being punished by spending less. My Compass is reliable, looks great with the Rugged Brown Pearlcoat, and has a lot of great options. Options you won't get on any of these other crossovers if you spend the same amount of money. As a value car, the Compass is a great choice for those of us who don't have $30,000 or $40,000 to spend on transportation. By the way, after 30,000 miles, the only times my Jeep has been in the shop are for oil changes.

well said. the rav4 was 10000 more for the same year and spec. all most the same, this is my 3rd Jeep I have owned and the other 2 have been reliable thought the years. one is still on the road with 100,000 mi. in 17 years.
but the looks and price of 2016 compass with 14000 mi , I couldn't pass it up.
      love this jeep.

Yep, my daughter has it now. My 2014 was trash, I got snookered into buying it new and it was the worst 4WD I have ever had in my life. I missing 1987 YJ so much, I wish I had never sold it

It is a crappy car. I own the same one you have and it's been crap since about 8000 miles. I've had my transmission over heat about 30 times since. Jeep dealerships won't admit to the fact that most of the cars with the same transmission are having the same issue. Stuck throttle body valve on it at about 32K miles and gas mileage sucks for it being a 4 cylinder. Maybe you got lucky with yours but mine is very non-reliable for it to be only 3 years old. It's gonna take about $2600 to repair everything. Not a good vehicle what-so-ever.

The bottom line is people will trash any vehicle. Go look at the comments for reviews on ANY other vehicle and you'll find the same negative reviews. People only talk if they have something bad to say about a product or vehicle. The compass/patriot are bargain vehicles. I have a 2015 high altitude with over 40k kilometers on it now and it's been great. The lesson to learn here is take what you read with a grain of sand.

40k miles isnt that much miles on it... you wont have issues till more miles are on it.

      @donaldparsons5875 Год назад

@dan jones well it has 131k on it now and is still going strong. I didn't mention I'm a licensed technician, so that helps. I've done a few suspension repairs and wareable items like brakes, battery and fluids. Other than the leather seats cracking and falling apart it's been a great vehicle and I absolutely love it!

I have a 2016 Jeep Compass Lattitude, FWD only. Only complaints I have are I wish it had a bigger gas tank, like around 15-17 gallons, and that the mpg could be a little bit better.
Maintenance on mine is relatively easy.

Carpediem06 I haven't had any problem with the compass, but I've only put on 10,000 miles. If I had my choice I would have taken the crosstrek, but the price of the compass was so much cheaper and I had a Suzuki to trade in, which was almost worthless. I like the compass overall, though a little more power would have been nice.

Great review! I love the UConnect system in FCA'S current Chrysler vehicles. Is it true that FCA is going to be dropping all of their small vehicles? Also, thanks for producing such informative and detailed reviews. Personally, Jeep really needs to update this vehicle. In my opinion, the Renegade blows this car out of the water. Keep up the great work Car Gurus!

I Google searched it and it claims that as of early 2017 FCA will begin to just focus on Ram's and Jeeps and stop making small cars in the U.S. Just Google search "FCA small cars". There's a whole web page talking about it. I'm not 100% sure if it is true, though. Thanks for commenting 123gwf!

Maybe too late for a reply. But in my view you need test drive and also make sure it has a full service history before committing to a purchase. If you can get extended warranty and dealer maintenance plan, even better.
In my case, the unit I purchased was a second hand 2014 model with 46, 000 km. The fuse box started failing a few months after I bought it, the remote lock and unlock would work when it felt like it, couldn't use Bluetooth at times, uconnect voice control would stop working. I'm fortunate that those were the only faults triggered by the fuse box failure, it could've been worse and life threatening.
I took it in for a week to have new fuse box installed. Fortunately it was still under warranty, although I had to pay for my own car hire for the week.
My advice to anyone buying is, test drive it thoroughly, ask a lot questions, and make sure you are covered when things don't turn out as you hoped they would.

I was interested in this model, but coming off of owning a sports car for 9 years, and wanting to switch to SUV, the Compass was a horrible test drive. Gutless, with an engine noise that reminded me of my Mom's 1988 Hyundai Excel. Ended up settling on a 2009 Ford Escape with 96k miles, that's how much I hated this "Jeep". The price is attractive, but 20 minutes in the car ends all doubts about wether it is a value.

I don't think this competes w/ the CRV or Escape. I think it's more a peg down and a competitor of the Subaru CrossTrek, which I think are both in a class of their own. Then, there's the even smaller peg of Honda HR-Vs and Mazda CX-3s and Nissan Juke's lol and even Jeeps own Renegage. Confusing - and some people will pull the CrossTrek and lump it into the smaller segment, and others pull the Compass and compare it to the CR-V. But really, it's Jeep's Cherokee that is adirect competitor to that RAv4 segment :/

I have a 2016 Jeep Compass and it has been great for the past 7 months or so. Fuel economy is great on the highway,, and the automatic CVT 2.0L 6-speed transmission is fun if you use AutoStick to shift manually. Unfortunately, I did not get the 4x4 version, but I'm sure I'll enjoy it off-road. I'm an outdoor enthusiast, and I've already placed a few auxiliary lights on mine, though there is still plenty of stuff I'd like to install and trust me, there is a lot of off-road add-ons you can install on this Jeep. Feel free to ask any questions.
