This song just popped into my head this morning. I have been trying to learn it. But, damn! Mike sure can lay down some tasty licks. I'm 69 years old now but still love this classic rock I grew up hearing. Nothing like a bunch of rocking old geezers playing this stuff. I wonder how many times Mike has played this song. His hands are playing those tasty little fills while singing and making it look easy. Rock on, gentlemen! Thanks to Anjani and Rach White for video recording this cool performance.
@@DustinBlythe yes! The break is so laid back and tasty just beautiful. The outro is amazing. Just lets it rip. I would love to hear the rest of what he laid down in the studio.
Absolutely. It's so "of its time", but still timeless. That's the sadness and melancholy of so called "one hit wonders", they get forgotten because the groups that created them didn't have long enough careers to give them "context". It's a great song, and that's all that matters.
Why didn't we take the Ride? To Hell with all the people who forgot how to have fun and enjoy life. How do so many people's veiw of life get so skewed.Oh well, there is this life and maybe another in the future,if we are lucky. Maybe by then we will be wise enough to understand that life is about being happy. I hope everybody knows how to do it.

They're old, man. Probably suffering from arthritis, bad backs and other maladies us old folks have to endure before our final reward. I was digging it...
buffalohawk65 Hello Buffalohawk65, This is Valerie, Mike's wife. Sorry you find this irritating, but do you know how much of the song Mike did write? He wrote the entire song except for one line that Skip wrote, being Ride Captain Ride. Mike does give Skip credit here in the video description. I find it strange that something like this would irritate you?
I was at the studio with Blues Image in 1970 when "Ride" was written. Here's exactly what happened. The producer Richard Podolor told the band that the album they were recording was too bluesy and that unless they could show him they had a pop song with hit potential to record that day he would have to give the studio time to Steppenwolf. Mike and Skip knew this meant the album would be shelved if that happened. So they sat together and Skip came up with some chords and the lyric line "Ride Captain Ride. No melody. Mike excused himself and left the studio for a few minutes. When he returned he had all the lyrics and melody written.Song writing is music and lyrics. The band arranged their own parts. The producer loved it, they recorded it right then and there. If you want to count how many lines of lyrics are in "Ride." Approx. 8 lines per verse times 4 verses. 4 lines per chorus times 4 choruses. Skip's line is vital to the song and Mike acknowledges him onstage and on interviews. The credits and royalties are split fairly and evenly. As to your post, slamming Mike for saying he wrote it, remember that was 2 shows out of thousands. If he announced "here's a song I wrote with Skip Konte" during the show, people would say "who?" Skip doesn't get irritated why should you?
+mike pinera Hey Valerie -- it is such a great song. Remember singing it on the way to football practice in high school. I have to come back to this every so often and listen to this and the original a couple hundred times to get my fix. That outro solo is so awesome.
