My brother bought one of these when they first started coming out. He absolutely loves everything about it.
Even the magazine capacity?
@@zaitcev0, if you're proficient with your firearm, then you have no problem. Remember, shot placement counts, not how many rounds you have. Besides, you will ALWAYS have a backup mag or two. Two to the chest and one to the head will stop any aggressor. That's only 3 accurate rounds. Get to the range and practice shot placement. Good luck.
@@62dobie in the heat of the moment 10 is the minimum id want. At range days my department has competitions to see whose the best shot. Its pretty competitive standing static shooting paper but when you run 100m, do 25 burpees and 25 pushups with a steel tree or Texas star rotating... the gap widens significantly and you see who the shooters are. I'm usually top 5 out of 50ish. Two body 1 head on a moving target with obstacles in the way is difficult.... especially if your taking rounds imo...your mileage may vary
@@dynasty2295, I agree. It is definitely not the most desired carry piece. But, 10 rounds or less has killed many since 1911 until the plastic fantastic came along. I'm just saying, if you practice and have good shot placement, then your odds are good enough to see another day. Take care. Shoot often.
I love this pistol. I have one in 9 mm. One of my favorite daily carry pieces. Super accurate. It’s almost too easy to simply drill out the bull’s-eye.
I agree I have the 3”compact EMP. I have never been a fan of the 1911 platform but after shooting the EMP at my local range I became a convert. Traded in a Ruger Sp 101 and bought myself one! I am still amazed at how accurate I’m able to be with the pistol. I’m by no means an expert shooter but I’ll be damned if this little 9mm isn’t a tack driver. The trigger is the best out of the box of any pistol I own and better than a couple I have had customized. I love this gun ! The only drawback for me is the manual safety. I do not care for a safety on a carry pistol but it can be trained around if you are able to put in the time
@@googlechicken It’s not like a safety is optional on a single action gun.
bought this pistol about a year or so ago and I love it. Feels like M&P 2.0 grip texture on a commander size 1911. Shoots great, looks great, no issues whatsoever.
I have one, it’s my third time around. I was foolish to trade the first two. THIS TIME, it’s found a home to stay!! What a great gun>. I have put the XS Big Dots on and MAN, the accuracy has almost doubled!! THANK YOU BROTHER for the absolute BEST gun vids on line!!!!
I recently but the big dots on my EMP and I really like them for self defense distances they are fantastic ,however anything past 15 yds the dot obscures the bullseye so not the best choice if you frequently shoot at longer distances
Thank you for reviewing this gun I have had this gun about three months now have not put a lot of rds in it around 300rd maybe 400 , but everything works .Not one malfunction .really like this gun and carries well in a Crossbreed Holster I don’t carry it every day but it’s in my rotation,Thanks again for reviewing it.Also I sent the slide back to Springfield Armory and had a night sight put on the front
I bought a slightly used square-butt EMP4 (Champion) about a year ago, paid $750 for it, looked brand new. Mine has the wooden grips with the crossed cannon SA logo, which I prefer over the other grips offered. It's been my EDC ever since the day I bought it. It used to be offered in .40S&W as well as 9mm, but SA pulled them because of poor sales. I have two other full-size 1911's this one fits my hand slightly better, although the full-size fit has never been an issue with me. Not only is the frame slightly narrower from front strap to mainspring housing over the full-size 1911, the grips are slightly thinner as well. If you have the square-butt version, the grip panels will interchange with the full-size 1911; if you want to fine tune the grip feel, you can put the thicker 1911 grips on the EMP, and conversely put the thinner EMP grips on the full-size. Now, the 3" EMP has a bobbed grip, so it is quite a bit shorter than the EMP4's grip.
Mine is a series 70-type action, no firing pin safety or magazine disconnect. The bushingless barrel you quickly get used to, and don't worry about losing the little tool for take down. A paperclip works just as well, and is what I use instead. The lock has been a non-issue for me; since I didn't get a manual with this pistol, I didn't even know it had a lock for a couple of months until I downloaded the manual. It does change the disassembly process to remove the mainspring, though.
The only thing I don't care for on this pistol is the ambidextrous thumb safety. I'm right handed, so I don't need it on the right side, and the holster I use does not shield the right side safety, so it could conceivably be pushed off in some circumstances, and I carry in C1. I also prefer the 9-round magazine over the 10 round, because the 9 round flush fits like the full-size 1911 magazines do, and makes the EMP slightly easier to conceal.
The pistol is very accurate, the rear sight can be drifted in the frame for windage. SA does NOT recommend 9mm+P ammunition for the EMP models. Overall, this is an awesome pistol, if you are a 1911 fan you'll definitely like it, if you haven't been a 1911 fan before, this will make a believer out of you.
I have had the Springfield EMP, 9mm, SubCompact, 9+1, 3" match barrel since 2006. Love it. My wife found it was the only semi-auto that she could easily rack back in 2006. Also, due to the weight it does not have has much felt recoil. It's been my daily carry since she left.
Sounds like a good trade 👌
My condolences
@@ykevin0607 He got to keep the pistol
Love your reviews and absolutely love this gun. After browsing for too long I finally picked up a used one in FDE. Only problem, now my wife thinks it’s hers. Keep em coming.
I picked up my SA EMP 4 CCC the same day you posted this video, Jul 29, 2020
. I absolutely love the way it looks. However, mine came with really small, plain engraving on both sides. Nothing like the one you use here. I just feel blessed to find one in the pandemic buying frenzy. I searched for about 4 months before finding one. I did find one, but that dealer wanted MSRP and was 150 miles from me. I haven't shot it yet. I've had the EMP 3 for about a year and wanted the 4 to go with it. Great review. Keep up the good work.
Sootch you are my favorite RUclips gun channel... I'm a Walther guy...PPS M2 is my primary carry but I'm also a 1911 type of guy too...I really enjoyed this video and I'll be looking into this Springfield Armory 1911 9mm ...Thank you for your very good in depth reviews...Eric Anewalt
I have this gun....I LOVE IT! I carry it and never doubt it's reliability... it has been re-engineered and this has made all the difference....worth every dollar.
My new shooter wife (a lefty) chose this pistol and it has become a family favorite. Small enough to carry, big enough to shoot. If i could only have one gun... this is a contender.. great review as always.
Flat springs make all the difference in a 1911 style pistol. I bought a Kimber Pro-Carry back in 2000 and shortly after getting it, Wilson Combat offered a flat spring kit for the Kimber. An added bonus was the kit eliminated the required "paper clip takedown" procedure. The flat spring made a good shooting gun, even better!
May 2023: I've had mine for six years and absolutely love it. It seems like it was custom made for my hand and the weight just under 2lbs gives the gun a stability that works for its accuracy. I took a year trying different guns and I picked the EMP4 up and knew immediately this was the handgun for me.....six years later I can still say I wasn't wrong.
I fired a Springfield emp4 very nice and soft shooter.
I just found out about these and I'm so excited to try one. Wish I could find one to rent somewhere!
Looking at three stitches on my left hand......and your thumb. I know the feeling
Great video, I’ve thought about the EMP (shorter one)
I really like the 4" bull barrel. Symmetry and balance it is aesthetically pleasing also the slide serrations are Aligned with the grip
Great review! I just purchased a Range Officer 9mm to add to the collection. This EMP is a BEAUTY
Great review! I bought the original square butt model as soon as they came out for sale. I bought it solely for its size and 9mm caliber. Normally, I do more research before spending over $1,000 for a handgun. I’m a long term 45 ACP 1911 guy and was dealing with a hand injury that made 45 ACP a little painful to shoot. I hoped this would be my solution and it turns out, I was right.
It’s been my EDC pistol for years and I have used it in many IDPA matches. I couldn’t be more pleased.
Just perfect for my needs.
Great review Don ! I have the newer version of this gun without the EMP4 lettering and with the Springfield crest. It's a great shooter and very accurate.
Love my EMP 3” in 40 S&W. It is a tack driver. The pistol is more accurate than I am. I was just shooting for fun and realized I’d nearly obliterated the Red Bull. Of course that was with my loads. Not nearly as accurate with factory ammo. I like this pistol so much I’m hoping to get an EMP 9mm next year.
Great review. I like that he can admit to an accidental discharge like we all have had.
I BOUGHT THE 10+1 VERSION “EMP-4” LAST YEAR, AND STILL HAVE NOT FIRED IT !!!
I WAITED TWO YEARS TO GET A GOOD PRICE !!! UNDER $900 👍😝🤘
This is going to be my next purchase. Thanks for the wonderful review, it was very thorough. Well done.
Great video Sootch00! Sweet looking 1911
When these came out about 3 or 4 years ago they were very hard to get that i had to wait a few months because they are rare. I have 2 of these exact models in my collection. They are very beautiful pistols. I paid around $1100 when they first came out. They also have this in 40 caliber. I emailed Springfield Armory 3 years ago about night sights for this pistol and they told me at the time that they are the only ones who can install night sights on this particular model and I would have to mail it to them for a $150 dollars. I left both of my EMP contour in their original form.
It's like a 45-caliber reasonable pull action smooth.
I bought this pistol today l think it's worth every penny I paid well under a grand before tax , what a great looking pistol , mine came Batman and it's really cool but beyond looks it's a dependable EDC that I'll be happy with. Great review Don !
Looks great, I love 1911’s I have full size in 45 and micro’s in 9mm and 380.. This looks like something in the middle I would really enjoy..
I must say I love your videos and keep up the good work, very informative with your reviews!
Got a 3" EMP in .40 for $700 a few weeks ago. It was a PSA flash sale I think.
Wow
How does it handle the .40 recoil?
that's a steal...you lucky bastard!
Looks like it would be an extremely comfortable shooter. Always thought that a full size 1911 is a bit too much gun for the 9mm cartridge, esp in a single stack but this looks great. I'd love one if I could afford it. Thanks for the review 👍
These 1911 variants represent the very best in firearm design, innovagtion and ingenuity. I really wish I hadn't ever learned to shoot on the striker fired control system pistols. These are so much fun to shoot and damned reliable.
IF you started on the strikers, you have more appreciation for the good SA trigger that a 1911 offers. You are also, most likely a much better shot and can easily make the most out of whatever gun is at hand. I myself started with DA revolvers.
I have this in .40. My favorite shooter.
I'm pissed you did this review! I just knew this gun was gonna stay under the radar until I could save up to get one. Now everyone is gonna run out and buy them all up before I can one.
Go buy one
You're fine. I believe it only comes in 9mm. Some of us would love it in .45acp.
@@electroniccheeks I wouldn't bet on it 9mm and 45 seem to be the hot thing at the moment ? I'd prefer 10mm myself though
It’s like 1,100 USD for the cheapest one on the website so it’s still a little pricey
Peter Parker why would your shoot 10mm when you could just use .45?
Springfield Armory do super cool guns.
Frank Bonazza III yep 👍🏻
I picked this pistol up a while back while looking for the SIG Nightmare. I like both a great deal.
Thanks Sootch for another excellent review!
I have a buddy of mine that has one. It's a excellent very accurate and u can tell it's a quality firearm. Real nice I must say.
I was looking at this gun, but I went with the G48 instead. Now with that I have 15+1 capacity with the Shield Arms mags/mag release, I feel really comfortable with the choice. This is a great option though, if you want to stay with the 1911 platform and know you want to go with 9mm, this is an excellent choice.
Love this platform!
I wish I could be out shooting instead of having to save my ammo right now.
I know me too
It's sad
Right? I have a good inventory of 9mm,but I don't even want to shoot 50 rounds
Get a 22lr! Ive been able to stave off my urge to shoot any 9mm D: (for now)
I wish a could have a gun.
Just got one. Saw a few reviews about EMPs not liking some types of ammo, but it's shot everything I've put thru it. I've ordered some grips from Stoner CNC I'm going to put on it.
Love 1911’s does not matter what Caliber
Now the only problem is finding one ! I was lucky enough to find and buy the Ronin in 45acp, which sold me on Springfield armory.. I just sold my STI and now am on the hunt for one of these bad boys..
That appears to be a highly refined and designed 1911 especially for the 9mm. This is what I would purchase if I ever get a semi-auto centerfire pistol. Just so very nice.
Beautiful firearm, and the Springfield haters can go pounds rocks.
I rather support a company that won't sell out other people, their rights, and capitalism for personal gain.
I carry an EMP 3” every day , i think its the perfect CCW
Its accurate and functional
I did swap out the sights for night sights which was a pain in the ass because SA makes the sights in unmatched non standard sizes
So you are sort of pushed to use them to do the work which is expensive and takes up to 12 week turnaround
Unacceptable
I opted to source sights and have them installed myself
gibsondrummer , Lol, I had a loose front sight on my 3” .40 s&w, SA replaced the front sight round trip in 7 days…under warranty.
Very Cool Springfield Armory 1911 EMP in 9mm , Sootch00 !!!!!!!!!!! As always long live the Republic my friend !!!!!!!!!!!!
I had a s w 639 in 9mm. It was very accurate. Had to sell it for the sig226. Wish 8 haad it back. Been looking for anothwr one. Been the wife put 8 rds in a paper plate at 15 yards. Im an IDIOT for selling it. Compact and accuracy and reliably. This spring field looks GREAT l.
Similar to my Dan Wesson, flat recoil spring, and the take down. Great gun , great review.
I could have sworn years ago Springfield said they designed the EMP series around the 40 Smith & Wesson cartridge. But what the hell do I know I'm usually wrong about everything anyway.
Yes they did in 2007 they came out with the EMP with a 3 inch barrel it was in 9mm and 40 . the 40 was not common to find. i owned a 9mm one when they first came out. big problem with the 1 st generation of them they would jam all the time. i had that problem also. they came out with this one 2 yrs ago? i own this one also. shoots great. trigger is excellent. only issues is capacity .
The 40 has a heavier frame it is designed around it, the components originally designed for 9 mm though from the ground up that’s what makes this gun awesome it was designed for the 9 mm
Thanks Sootch - god bless you and yours. God bless America. I really respect your reviews. Keep up the good work. 🙏🏻🇺🇸
I really wished they had a rail as an option. And that it came in all black. Great review as always!!
I had the Springfield EMP4 CCC and traded it for the STI Staccato C. I felt guilty supporting a company that tried to screw over me living in Illinois.
Staccato C is a better pistol! You win! )
I did the same thing, Staccato C is much more accurate and takes standard mags.
So move! Illinois is the pit of hell!
Damn it. Making me have all kinds of internal emotions about buy a springfield.... that tac operator 1911 always catches my eye too
I bought one about a year ago it’s a beautiful gun and shoots wonderfully not much recoil
Love my EMP4 CCC. Great review Sooch!
This pistol is literally the sweetest firearm ive ever owned. They are pricey but well worth it. You can shoot a fly off a horses ass with this thing...
You don't have to safe it off for us, we're not even there bud!!
Don't worry about my feelings when making a video. Waste of time.
Great vid so far, I'm still watching.
This tool has been on my list.
Gorgeous!!
I want the EMP in 9mm and in 40S&W
Perhaps a manufacturer should make the same thing with the traditional 1911 bushing and a feed ramp that is part of the frame.
Thank you for this very interesting video.
It seems to me that this pistol deserves to shot with a single hand and to be tested for groups at 25 and 50 yards.
At Least 🙄
What does shooting it one handed prove or tell you? What one person considers a fair amount of recoil another will tell you opposite
You missed adding the blooper where you said 11+1 😂 boy that would be nice though.
I’ve carried mine for 3 years now. I would have to say, the best gun I own
I have a somewhat older version of this gun, but an EMP3, that I inherited from my dad. It’s a little bit heavy for me to wear, and frankly, a bit too expensive! But I put a stream light on it (via the trigger guard) and it’s my home defense gun. I am amazed at how accurate it is....and very little recoil. Dad left me 6 magazines for it, but all are 9’s...will the 10 rounders fit the older EMPs as well, do you know?
Yes, Wilson Combat makes a good 10 round 9 mm 1911 magazine.
@@ckim6400, the Wilson's won't fit. The EMP mags are proprietary to the EMP series only.
@@62dobie That pretty much sucks, sure looks like the base plate of a wilson mag. tho so the mag catch is different? Won't be on my list to purchase then.
@@ckim6400, the mag plus the gun is smaller.
Nice guns.. had a chance to get the fde green for only $769 on sale pad and ended up getting the Range officer elite Champion 9mm instead... didn't really want it with the green slide.. but for the price I shoulda as is $969 now lol
Love the CCC! Edc and use it for idpa!
Good review but there is a feature that you overlooked that this gun has. This gun can fire EMP charges at electrical or robotic targets. When a robotic target comes at you with a NineMilameetahUzi, cap it with one of these guns.
That badboy is clean !!
An alternative to the old star model B pistols
That was a 1911 in 9mm
I want one. Hard to find. I have the 911 380 acp and absolutely love it
Another great gun video. Thanks sootch
Can't afford this on my budget yet, I would rather have the currently "discontinued" 4inch model in caliber 40S&W instead. Because is the only ammo still on the shelves. But good video though!
Wish I could find a 4 inch .40 all I see are the 3 inch.
Tony Tripp
Palmetto State Armory has a Great Price on the 3” In 40S&W !!
It’s $400 LESS than any of the EMP’s ??
That’s a bobtail cut on the handle if memory serves me correctly
Springfield calls it their Contour model.
Sootch, the 1911 has a pantheon of detractors. It's to bulky, too big, etc. So why is it that so many 9mm 1911 frame options are available? It seems to me that it's not the 1911 itself, but the .45acp round. It's heavy, slow, possibly the recoil is a big factor too. I have nothing against the 9mm, the advances in 9mm technology has opened up many ballistic capabilities close to the .45acp results. Maybe I'm just "old school", or just too stubborn...
The 1911 is just about my favorite pistol because of its historical significance. With that being said, I don't feel comfortable carrying a single action pistol. For these reasons, my carry pistol is a full sized Beretta PX4. While my personal comfort zone requires me to carry something different, there will always be room in my safe for the classics.
Early versions had a lock on the mainspring housing, along with a hole (where he pointed) to lock the mainspring down for easier disassembly. This later version, circa 2021 as shown here, does not have a lock - what he pointed to is an actual pin to retain the mainspring, that needs pushed out to remove the mainspring & plunger. The ejector on these later versions is pinned as well. They just kept refining these right up until discontinuing them around the end of 2021. (why.....!?) The latest models even ditched the modern hollow font on the slide roll marks, in favor of 1/8" tall letters on both sides: "EMP4" on the left and "SPRINGFIELD ARMORY" on the right, with the crossed cannons. These only have two lines of characters on the frame in the serial number location instead of the crowded three lines on the earlier models. I have that version. Some slides at the end even ditched the crossed cannons symbol. Mmm-mmm, these really look like the good ol' 1911. The later Ronins got cheaped out a lot: slides not stainless, plastic trigger, etc.
@Darude Well... that's some real rationalizing, there! Sounds like you should be commenting on a Glock video...
@Darude The question is: Is stainless steel too weak to do everything a 1911 needs to do? Answer: Yes, certainly. Dan Wesson & Wilson Combat probably know what they're doing, too. My trigger is an aluminum diamond-like coated rounded short trigger, installed by me. It seems you're the only one pissing on my gun...
i wish springfield armory would bring this back. you cant find 1911 in 9mm anymore with the bobtails.
I'll take my EMP with OD green cerakote and "dirty olive" color VZ Castle grips.
Oh what was I thinking? I live in Australia....we're all just scared little children as far as the government is concerned.
i.
-&
..
IMO, Springfield should make one of these with a shorter grip, though it will mean less capacity.
Probably one of the only 9mm 1911s I'd ever own, I am a traditionalist when it comes to the 1911 platform, if it ain't in 45acp, I ain't listening... Most of the time
Agreed, but this juan is pretty sweet.
Ok boomer fudd
@@ZERO_42069 if you calling a 23 year old a boomer, well, you got issues mate
That's a beautiful gun right there
Wish it had a rail system like the XD Combat Operator 9mm 1911. But looks like a nice weapon system
I love the gun, but I can't walk around with 1200 dollars on my hip. Good review as always! 😎😎😎

Bet you have guns you dont need. . And bet your life is worth more than 1200 dollars... if you want one.. go for it.
Got mine for $969 .I've had it for 2 weeks and have 300 rounds thru. I paid full price for a standard in 2017. Both shoot great and the standard 10 round mags work in the contour.
Great Gun. But the 1991 Guns & Ammo gun of the year is just as good if Not Better.
The Star Firestar.
They were available in 9 mm, .40 S&W & .45 acp.
If you look around you can find one in nice condition for under $500.
Cheers
Older video, or is that thumb still displaying the wounds a few weeks later? Nice gun by the way, and excellent review as always. I keep debating a 9mm 1911 as a home defense gun, Currently, I have a US Property marked 1911 from 1918, and a Dan Wesson A2 Model.
Any places you know selling it for $960.00??? That’s actually Kimber price territory! Is it better than a 9mm. Kimber 1911?? I had no idea Springfield was SO pricey!! PLEASE do a comparison between the two makers!! That would be fantastic!! Kimber (American made) vs. Springfield (Brazilian made? Croatia made?). THANKS!!! GREAT VIDEO as always!!!
The 1911's are American made.
I prefer my smith commander in scandium... in 45acp.. 4.25 inch barrel with thin grips.
I bought a beautiful FDE one with black grips, factory set up in 9mm. Just head over heals for it. So I drop a 1k on this thing. Get it home and all three mags nose dive from 6+ rounds. So I think, that sucks, so I load just four rounds of Lehigh max expansion and rack. Bullet sticks into feed ramp. So I look inside after dropping the mag/round and the feed ramp appears to be a wall instead of a ramp. So I try one round of hst both grains, Winchester 147 hollow point, umc hollow point, win white box, perfecta, umc fmj.
Would not load any round I own. My friend has a 3" and he loves it. My emp 4 is just a heartbreaker. My local dealer offers a 7 day return for store credit. After reading online of other people having the same issue and it never feeding hollow points even after Springfield "fixes it" and the proprietary mags nosediving yeah I'll be taking this thing back for store credit.
I still have alot of reservations about buying Springfield Armory products ! Maybe a used one for the right price !
@Midnight Hour a few years ago they made donations to an Illinois state legislators who are ramped and blatant anti second amendment advocates. These people openly supported the bill that was deemed the Illinois Gun Dealer Licensing Act. Which would have made a new license required for gun dealers, sports shops, and or ranges apply for a state license and the federal license. This would have cost small dealers and sporting firearm shops substantially more to recoup the annual costs. Causing them to raise prices and essentially driving up prices and possibly causing them to lose business. This move exempted manufactures who sell to the public via a factory store. So this is why I am still hesitant on buying SA products factory new! I do have a M1A that has been accurized into a M24 platform about 8 year’s ago. But that is the only SA purchase I have made in the past 10 years.
Review the sig Sauer p-210 target!!!!!
Love mine... Built to be a 9mm 1911.
I have one in FDE, love it!
Wow just beautiful. What a fantastic pistol
Have the 3 inch 40 s&w emp, the finest handgun I've ever shot.
Love your videos brother, I have one of the first models, haven't had luck with mine. Sights were off by 2inches at 5 yard, and it like to stove pipe and ftf. Might just be a lemon since my other springfields have been perfect.
i got one use/brand new yesterday great gun but the guy before messed all the mags up trying to shove 45 rounds in them dude wasn't too bright now i gotta buy 3 new mags but it does 8+1 after i worked on the mags so that'll do for now
I watch all your videos and I still can’t figure out where that trigger pull gauge comes from. 😉
To Hell with Springfield Armory! They knew the facts about the IFMA
How would you compare the EMP to the Ruger SR 1911 Lightweight Commander 9mm?
Some mis-statements he made.
- With the proper magazine this is a 10+1 round pistol.........Not an 11+1 round pistol as he stated at one point in the video.
- While Springfield does offer this pistol in a more current production version having their ILS (Integrated Locking System) feature..............This specific pistol does not have it. The pistol he reviewed is a pre-ILS version. What he was thought was the ILS locking feature switch...... was just a retaining pin that is in every standard 1911................The main spring retaining pin located in the mainspring housing.
I'm not sure why he sees the use of the take down pin tool as a negative........... anymore than having to use a barrel bushing wrench tool on any tightly fitted 1911 having a properly tight fit barrel bushing. A sloppy loose 1911 bushing can be removed by hand without a bushing wrench but that gun will not be accurate. You can break this EMP4 down without the pin tool but I admit it is a PIA to do it without the tool. Try to take a properly tight fit barrel bushing off of a 1911 without a bushing wrench. You can't do that without marring the gun up. If this pistol came with a Dawson Tool-less Guide Rod installed............... that would be fantastic and even easier to break down.
Other than that.............A good review of a Great pistol.
