    A good review from a glock toting 1911 hater.. a ringing endorsement. All jokes aside I have been completely won over my my EMP4. It’s an absolute race car when you run it at speed, the low recoil combined with the amazing trigger equals damn near unrivaled follow up shots when shooting fast, for a non-competition style pistol. The overall thinness of this gun is a huge bonus for CC. Capacity is really the only downside, then again if you can’t solve your problem with 10 rounds you’ve got bigger issues.

    I've had the Ronin EMP since they came out throated it and polish the ramp and run the crap out of it. Then did lil trigger work and it is quite a awesome little carry ..

    I own a Springfield TRP and have been nothing but impressed with the quiality and reliability of that gun. Springfield knows how to make a good 1911, especially the ones that go from the factory to their gunsmiths for that semi-custom treatment.

      People might argue with me about this but the TRP Springfield is about the only production 1911 I’d trust my life with.

      @@Firebird_876 I think that would be a safe bet. I don't carry mine, but I wouldn't have a second thought about it if I ever did. Few thousand rounds through mine, all different ammo, and not a single malfunction.
      Edit: I did modify my TRP though. I replaced the full length guide rod with a GI plug and rod from Wilson Combat. Just personal preference.

    I bought the original 3in EMP many years ago and with night sights, ambi safety and 3 mags included it was good choice. The Ronin is a slightly down spec version of the same gun.
    I'm happy Springfield has stuck with the EMP series. Every person I ever let shoot it falls in love with it.

  • @LuvBorderCollies

    I've avoided micro 1911's for decades because of the rep for malfunctioning. I did have a Colt Officer Model in 45 right after they came out. Very happy with its performance and accuracy but....with the steel frame it felt like a brick in my field jacket. If it'd been the aluminum frame I'd probably still have it but Colt was so slow to get the Lwt version out.
    Glad to see SA Inc has done well with the micro size in 9mm. I saw an ad for a full size Ronin in 10mm that has grabbed my interest.

    I like that they did away with the ambi-safety. I know this is bad for lefties, but I feel the ambi-safety is somewhat fragile on my all black EMP. The other issue I've had with this gun, and it was a fairly major one, was that the firing pin hole was punched incorrectly and it created off-center strikes on the primer. Bought the gun brand new and on my first outing to the range, my first shot did not go bang. In fact, it was impossible to get through one mag without a misfire. It was then I discovered the primer strikes were so off-center, the firing pin was not igniting the primer. SA "fixed" the issue by installing a firing pin bushing to center the strikes more, but it was still off center. Fortunately, it was moved just enough so that it could actually ignite the primers. I was actually hoping they'd replace the slide, but so long as it works, I guess it's ok. Really surprised this gun left the factory like this. Shortly after I got it back the plunger tube came loose and I had to restake it. I still have this gun, but don't use it as an EDC any more as it really doesn't offer anything that either my SW Shield or MP9c can provide. I hope the QA control is a little better these days with the Ronin.

    I think Springfield is making some of the most impressive production 1911s for the price point right now. I just picked up an Emissary Commander, and it's very well fitted with no slop whatsoever, no visible machining marks in side, and it eats everything I've fed it so far. The Ronin EMP 3" definitely has me curious, given the quality I've seen on the Emissary, and my TRP. I realize the Ronin is at a different price point, and not on par with a TRP, but I have yet to hear much criticism of the Ronins at all.

    In thought I wanted one because it was advertised as the smallest 1911, until I did a stare and compare on specs. It’s basically the same size and weight as my Kimber Ultra CDP II in .45AC, with just two additional rounds. If I’m going to carry something that big I’ll just carry the Kimber. IDC is my Sig P938 1911-sh, much smaller, does’t have the 1911 trigger, but the trigger is still very good, and does not have the grip safety. Other than that, it has the same manual of arms as the 1911. In my opinion it’s not worth getting if you have a Kimber Ultra.

    ALL 1911 models MUST have the barrel throated CORRECTLY as to allow the proper feeding and ejection of all ammunition regardless, even reloads...also carefully check and clean your magazines and look for anything abnormal which could cause a stoppage......These days all manufacturers throat their 1911's, HOWEVER, AT TIMES THE GUN SMITH THAT IS DOING THIS DOES WORK LESS THAN ACCEPTABE AND YOU BUY IT AND HAVE A NITEMARE

    Great review as always. I see this gun as a counter alternative to the current trend of being as small and lightweight as possible doublestacks that are dominating the market. I don’t know if I’d necessarily recommend a 1911 to most first time shooters but after seeing so many struggle with 365 and 365 adjacent guns I’m happy to see a priority of shootability over easiness to carry.

    Magazines are usually the weak link for 1911s otherwise Wilson wouldn't have made bank on their aftermarket mags. That said, is the Ronin able to take other brand magazines like the Wilson ETM or Tripp Cobra .9mm mags or is proprietary? Proprietary would be a deal breaker.

      The Ronin operator 9mm will take the other magazines, as its the traditional
      .45 frame with spacers here and there to handle the small 9mm.
      The EMP is actually redesigned specifically for the 9mm, even the grip circumstance is noticeably smaller. The OEM mags are Mec-Gar

    Bill Wilson carries a 9mm 1911. That seems to say something in and of itself. I do think you would get a kick out of a Detonics combat master .45. It has an interesting history. Very small before any of the "compact" 1911s existed. Para Ordnance Canada made some interesting 1911 double stack .45 also. I don't carry any 1911s as my Walther pps is so small and light it has done the trick so far. I carry daily and light wins over anything else. I figure that weight and underwood ammo should work, heaven forbid, social work needs doing. Enjoy your work always.

    I'm very disappointed to hear you jump on the 9mm "newer ammunition" bandwagon.
    I don't have anything specifically against 9mm, own several and enjoy shooting them.
    However, to place so much faith in FBI testing that does not duplicate reality is capricious at best. Then again, sidearms for the FBI are more symbolic than anything.
    The "newer" ammunition isn't that new. The only difference is the promotion of the caliber. After the initial switch by some LEO agencies few agencies maintained that momentum. To gain those "advantages" one has to go +p or +p+, then all of a sudden the supposed training advantages disappear, the cost advantage certainly does.
    Up here (Alaska) we all carry 40s or 45s, with the exception of the Fibbies, who converted to 9, all the agents I know just hate it.
    I've been to alot of scenes where the dead guy had 40 or 45 holes, and I visited a lot of wounded people with 9mm holes.
    Maybe we're different up here as LEOs, but probably with our hunting experience and often absence of backup, we appreciate that bullets have to break bone more often than be turned...to heck with what someone on a warm clean range and holding a tape measure has to say

    • @ChucksSEADnDEAD

      This is just a misunderstanding of what's being talked about regarding "technology", which to be fair the people who make those statements do not understand what they're refering to either.
      Very few departments across the US have the budget to conduct independent scientific testing of ammunition. The FBI and the LAPD are known for doing these scientific tests. Are the FBI agents gunslingers? They aren't, but that's completely irrelevant. We're not talking about gun fighting, we're talking about testing. The FBI does more than any department could. Which is why so many agencies trust the FBI recommendations.
      Go back to the 1980s. Bullet technology sucked. And 9mm got the short end of the stick. Cavities were poorly engineered and plugged easily. Jackets shed if you looked at them wrong. The expansion was designed for "energy dump" which easily lead to underpenetration. The thing with .40 and .45 is that you could load them with hot garbage, have it overexpand, lose the jacket, and still have enough mass for what's left of the lead core to hit someone's switch.
      So no, you don't need +p or +p+ to see the advantages of modern technology. The modern technology is the fact that we can take a 9mm, get it to 14-16 inches of gel reliably and still do over 12 inches after going through the autoglass or door panel test.

      The same people who will say caliber doesn't matter will say 380 is underpowered and carry a 9 despite them being the same diameter
      Funny how this magic "modern bullet technology" only applies to one caliber

    • @ChucksSEADnDEAD
      @ChucksSEADnDEAD 2 года назад +1

      @@jellyfrosh9102 380 is "underpowered" because if you load them with hollow points, most of them do not meet the widely accepted performance standards. If you load them with FMJ or those bullets that look like a Phillips head, it works. You're just paying more for training ammo and stuck with microguns so you get none of the advantages of the smaller caliber. I know people who pocket carry 380s in their shorts during the summer. Nothing wrong with it as long as they're not hindering themselves with bullets that don't reach vitals. The diameter is the same, but the performance isn't.
      It's not "funny", you'd have understood how this isn't comedy if you read my comment above. You could use garbage bullet technology with a .40 and despite the bullet failing in real life compared to how the engineers envisioned it would work through gel tests, the added mass made it more resilient to underpenetration and defeating barriers.
      Old technology: 9mm overexpands, loses energy quickly, loses jacket which hinders weight retention, stops short of some dude's heart and he keeps shooting at cops. .40 overexpands, loses energy quickly, loses jacket which hinders weight retention, still has enough mass to do the equivalent of 12-16 inches of penetration in gel and does punch the heart wall causing the guy to collapse.
      New technology: 9mm controls the expansion, jacket is bonded, designed for 14-16 inches in gel. .40 controls the expansion, jacket is bonded, designed for 14-16 inches in gel and essentially does the same thing as the old technology, but you get a prettier expansion petal rather than mangled lead.
      Do you see how "modern bullet technology" only "applies" to once caliber? The modern tech brought 9mm to where it should have been, while it didn't squeeze extra performance into .40 and .45. It just made them more consistent at what they were doing 30-20 years ago.

    • @jellyfrosh9102
      @jellyfrosh9102 2 года назад +1

      @@ChucksSEADnDEAD "technology made 9 just as good as 40 and 45 so that somehow doesn't apply to 380"
      so how would bonded bullets not allow 380 to catch up to 9mm but somehow make 9mm catch up to 40 and 45? out of a 4 inch barrel a 95gr 380 JHP has almost the exact same velocity as a 115gr 9mm JHP. Ballistic gel testing has shown more and more 380 rounds every year that perform fine. Compare a micro 9mm to a micro 380 they both have problems with ballistic gel and the 9mm has more recoil with almost the same capacity if not the same capacity.
      I do like that you brought up the ammo cost though, because you reveal the real reason 9mm is popular: it's cheap.

    • @ChucksSEADnDEAD
      @ChucksSEADnDEAD 2 года назад

      @@jellyfrosh9102 I should write a book at this point because I'm tired of repeating myself. Yes, if you apply modern technology to 380 it doesn't work right, because the way a 9x19 expands it acts like a speed brake on 380 levels of energy. If I remember correctly only the XTP hollow points by Hornady sort of underexpanded and allowed 380 to go 11 inches in gel. What a coincidence how the caliber in the "low end" of military service pistol rounds can be engineered for performance, but the caliber at the "top" of blowback pocket pistols has issues.
      Bonded bullets don't allow 380 to catch up, because nobody makes bonded bullets for 380 that actually perform according to the metrics we've established. So like I said, if you want to carry 380 you _don't_ want it to expand. Carry ball or those extreme bullets with the cross shaped tips.
      A .380 95gr JHP at the same velocity of a 115gr 9mm JHP will not clear the 12" of gel minimum. Like I said, last I checked the XTP design by Hornady gets you close by expanding too little. Maybe there's more designs that have been changed, but most seem to do 9" of penetration. You know what also did that? Garbage 9mm designs.
      Micros are honestly a mistake and I don't recommend them to anyone. Those who wish to carry them have to be aware of the caveats. If micro 9mms and micro 380s have problems, surely we've found the common denominator.
      9mm is cheap because it's popular. If 9mm didn't exist and had to be invented, it would be more expensive than current day .380 due to lack of economy of scale. The economy of scale exists to satisfy 9mm's popularity. You're putting the cart before the horse here.
