If Greg had taken the chance to leave the Unknown, it would likely have ended with him waking without Wirt. He couldn't have physically dragged Wirt out of the water, so he would have to either abandon Wirt or drown trying to save him. The only way for both of them to live would have been for Wirt to gain his own resolve to leave like he does in this finale. No matter how many trials Greg faced, he wasn't going to survive when he refused to abandon his brother (didn't leave Wirt to drown). He was lost unless Wirt pulled them both out. Wirt needed everyone he met in order to learn to love others and himself, but that final step to decide to start living by that lesson could only be done by himself.
A very good point! I hadn't considered the logistics of what Greg waking up first would look like. Though I have seen a few sad fan adaptations of Greg leaving Wirt in the lake.
Hey, I loved this series. Pun 100% intended. It was very thorough and thoughtful analysis of one of the best things Cartoon Network ever made. A true classic.
God, this series is genius and I never even realized just how much until you brought it to my attention. The structure is brilliant! Every episode a new kind of love explored... until it comes back to the self. I love it so much. Thank you for such a poignant analysis! I'll definitely watch this again once it's compiled into one long video. Either way, you have gained a new subscriber! Thank you and take care.
It would be amazing if the "love words" thing was intentional in the making of the show! But who knows? There's a lot of other stuff going on in the story too. I'm just pleased it lines up like this intentional or not! Thank you so much for sticking through the whole 10 episodes! I hope you'll like all the other stuff too!
@@Storyograph Whether intentional or not, it's there! Because you found it, you had this brilliant essay idea, you made a great argument for it... and it lined up perfectly. Great job, sir.
I really enjoyed this video series! I especially loved how much you went into Wirt’s development. As renowned and discussed as Over the Garden Wall is, I don’t see many go into much depth with Wirt, which is a shame because he’s a great character. On top of that I learned quite a bit about different forms of love that I never knew about so thank you!
Thanks! I love Wirt as a character. I also learned a lot from researching for this video! I never knew hospitality (xenia) was considered one of the Greek loves. I was mostly familiar with big ones: romance, friendship, familial love, and maybe some basic understanding of "agape". It's been a lot of fun! I'm glad you liked it
Your series was great. Your framework of the love-types is really powerful, particularly how you use it to unearth some of the fable-type themes of the show like importance of self love you discuss here!
Yeah, Wirt interacts with some forms of love more than others, but I think his exposure to them is what really transforms him as a character. Thank you!
I didn't notice it either until I started to look for the theme in the story. I had a lot to say about "fear" but while explaining that, I had to ignore a whole lot of the side stories. Then I realized all the side stories were about love, and that was that! But I'm sure there are a lot of other interpretations of this series. It's pretty complex!
I never comment on anyone's videos, this is in fact my second comment on this site, however after binging all of your over the garden wall videos, I'm confident in saying this content is excellent and I will be visiting your other videos, there is no doubt in my mind that this channel is an underrated diamond, hopefully (and with a little help from the algorithms) you'll find even more success in the platform, thank you for making these videos. I'll be hoping you continue working on this series, personally I'm interested in exploring the journey of all the other characters but whatever you post about this show ill watch.
Running this channel takes up a lot of my time, I and sometimes I wonder if its all worth the effort. But then every now and then I get a comment like this, and it helps remind me why I’m doing this. Thank you so much! I’m honored to have received one of your two comments on RUclips!
A random thing that always fascinates me about this show is the Beast’s voice. When I first watched it, I was sure I recognized the voice, but when I checked IMDb the actor wasn’t in anything else I’d seen, he doesn’t even have a picture. It’s probably a coincidence, but I realized he sounds familiar bc he sounds so much like James Earl Jones, which is pretty cool to me lol
You have to find the rift between space and time like Wirt and Greg did. And they came back to their dimension and it was a few minutes after entering the lake.
@@Storyograph They literally went through the portal to the Unknown. Which explains why the Dog was possessed by the Beast and Lorna was possessed by the spirit. And the Beast said, "All who perish here become trees for the Lantern!" Any death can create an Edelwood tree.
Why did Greg turn into a tree?
He got too cold to finish the beast’s tasks, so he failed
He wanted to “leave”, but he took the whole concept of “making like a tree” a bit too far
Maybe he gave up hope
@@thewonderfulwhat5750 Hmmm. That Beast sure has a lot of rules.
@@ClashwoodThunderfade I want to be mad at this.
“Are you going to wander around in the woods for the rest of your life?” Nice callback from the second episode
That’s character arc, babyeee!

I’ve loved this show for years now, and this video helped verbalize reasons that I liked it that I never fully understood. Thanks!
That's great to hear! I usually start making these videos for that very reason - to find out why it is I like a certain show/movie/etc. Thank you!

Well done. I look forward to the next project from Storyograph, whenever that may be.
I’ve got a LOT ideas for next year, but it comes down to when I can get it all done. But first I’m gonna take a break for a while.

Yeah, his voice does have that James Earl Jones quality to it. I believe the actor is an opera singer, which works great for the Beast!
@@Storyograph Haha yeah that makes sense given the way he sings the Beast’s song and his IMDb credits 😄
