My favorite thing to do is draw an object as glass. Or even an animal. This was helpful in a few tidbits I haven't learned before!

I am trying to learn to make art with colored pencils. This is a new love I have discovered. Can anyone give me some advice on what things I should have on hand to start out? Such as types of pencils to buy or maybe even point me to a book that could help? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. And BTW Ms Gildow you are a remarkable teacher. As someone with no knowledge on this subject you are easy to understand.

Hello :) Here are a few books that you may find useful: Colored Pencil Painting Bible by Alyona Nickelsen, The New Colored Pencil by Kristy Ann Kutch, and the Encyclopedia of Colored Pencil Techniques by Judy Marten. Janie Gildow also has books. I own these books and several others. You may want to check your local library for these or if you're looking to purchase, Amazon has all of these books and more. Prismacolor pencils are good, but there are some quality control issues with lead breakage. Faber-Castell Polychromos are really good oil based colored pencils with a harder lead than the Prismacolors. I use both. Paper wise, try and use heavyweight paper like Stonehenge or Bristol, not sketch paper, because it doesn't hold up to the layers of colored pencil.I hope that this helps and that you enjoy your journey with colored pencil.

I'm just wondering if you ever received any type of help for a choice/need of advice of color pencils & supplies? I've used at least 20 different brands of colored pencils & might be able to help you out. I would eat colored pencils if it were good for you, lol. I just adore them & all the different effects each type can give you. If you could tell me which base (wax, oil, water soluble, chalk pastel, etc)you're wanting, that will narrow some of results. If you no longer need help, I apologize. I don't mind at all to help

I bought some Prismacolor ones and am slowly learning how to use them. There are probably better choices but I don't know a great deal about art. i am not very good but I used to paint a little but am losing the use of my hands so I tried colored pencils and found I have more control with them. Any advice you can give is much appreciated. i am bed bound so don't have a lot of people to ask for advice.
