I was about 300 pounds and fell in 2003 on frozen concrete. X-rays said neither knee was broken. I had arthritis in both and was 55 years old. They gave me a 50-50% recovery rate if they had to operate. I'd be in a wheelchair if it didn't work, the orthepidic surgeon said. I'm 76 now and have led a strictly sedentary lifestyle since. I went up to 400 pounds. In 2022 I hadan Ah-Ha moment. I'm on a 1200 calorie diet since, and am 219. Down 181 pounds. My skeletal structure seems all out of whack with my bones having shifted being so overweight so many years.
My knees can't be straight anymore when I try to stand straight. They have a bowed, bended stand. I have o use 2 canes or a walker because my balance is shot. Would it be okay to use the first stretchy thing you showed? I can't find one big enough though. I have developed Lymphedma since the fall, and my thing right above my knees, are huge. Thank you for any help.

Hi Diana, We are so sorry to hear that you are dealing with knee pain and balance issues after your fall and arthritis diagnosis. It sounds like you’ve been through quite a lot, and we’re really impressed with your incredible weight loss journey. Dropping 181 pounds is a huge deal and shows just how determined you are.
We totally get that your skeletal structure has been affected by being overweight for so long, and the imbalance and difficulty standing straight must be really tough. It’s great that you’re using two canes or a walker to keep stable-definitely stick with that for your safety.
About the stretchy band you mentioned, finding one that fits right is key. You might want to measure around your knee and check Amazon for a brace that matches your size. Getting the right fit will make a big difference and it will help stabilize your knee.
We recommend maybe buying a few from a store with a good return policy to see which ones will work the best for you and you can return the rest. We want to be transparent with you that most if not all braces are uncomfortable after a certain period of wearing them and they all seem to slide down the leg at some point so it’s ok to take breaks from them too.
For now, we highly recommend focusing on strengthening your glutes to help with the pain and discomfort. We’ll share a couple of exercise videos with you.
Go at your own pace, and it’s totally fine to skip any exercises that feel too hard. Even if you find just one exercise that you like and feel comfortable doing, doing it consistently throughout the day can really help. The goal is to work the muscle without losing form.

Hi Doc. Great channel. I wanted to know if you could suggest the best brace for a medial meniscus tear with a small vertical subchondial fracture with small bone marrow edema in medial tibia area? I have just finished 3 gel shots for the meniscus tear and I am wearing a compression sleeve and then a double hinged brace over it. This does provide relief. However, I don't have arthritis. The majority my pain is from the fracture area when weight bearing. I was wondering if I should try an off loader brace in this case? Any opinion, would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi there. I have been suffering with a very swollen left knee for over a month that felt like it came out of nowhere, but after watching your videos... I feel like they have helped me to understand what could be happening.
I was really struggling with getting the swelling to fully go away...so I did actually end up having a steroid injection, which has helped to bring the swelling right down.
Since then, I have been watching your videos and have wondered whether muscle imbalance contributed to my swollen knee. Prior to the swelling occurring, I had been attending high energy exercise classes for quite a while. These would focus a lot on building up the quads (lots of squats and lunges!) I am thinking this has potentially contributed to putting extra pressure on my knee joint and I am now totally switched onto the idea of building up the glutes! Also I have had 2 physio appointments where they told me to do exercises that will focus on knee/quad strength... I did ask about building glute strength and they said I can do that if I want, but ultimately wanted me to focus on the knee/quad exercises!

When the pain under the patella is sharp does that means there’s permanent damage or can I hold out hope that it is more of an irritation issue. I have an atrophied leg after an injury so my mechanics are definitely not good
