Lee Remick was such a lovely lady who always gave outstanding performances. Unfortunately she died WAY too young. Lovely, lovely, lovely . . .
Lee Remick is gorgeous. ❤
I wonder why Miss Remick was passed over for the film version of 'Wait Until Dark'. The play with Remick was very successful and ran for 373 performances. The creepy surprise at the plays' end was put into the film version, but in the play, it caused people to jump and women to scream. My brother saw the play in London and he testified at that time that it was a terrifying moment, indeed.
Seeing Larry Blyden as a panelist, shows he has (or will do) all 3 before it's all over, panelist, mystery guest, host
Lee Remick..What a beautiful lady. She comes from Quincy, Massachusetts (I live the next town over). Many years ago Quincy had a shopping center. (before the malls). Her father owned a department store there called Remicks of Quincy, a lovely store. I never saw her but I was told that on occasions Lee would greet people and sign autographs there. She gave wonderful performances in the movies. Her movies were high quality (check them out.). So proud she was from our area.
What a wonderful connection and remembrance from your hometown. Such a sad and untimely ending at age 55 for such a greatly talented and beautiful woman. LEE REMICK was a gifted actress of stage and screen and regardless of the nature of the films she made, whether it was High Drama such as DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES or even a horror movie such as THE OMEN, she always stole the show. May she RIP.
Now I know where those gorgeous eyes come from she must've been Irish American
@@trumancapote9097 Her performance as an alcoholic was incredible.
Lee Remick was great. Gorgeous, talented and she seemed like a very nice woman. Thanks for the video.
Very talented actress. Fantastic in the film The days of Wine and Roses.
She is missed. R.I.P
Jayne Meadows is very good as a panelist in this episode.
She coos a lot.
Lee Remick is stunningly beautiful.
Lee Remick !!! Stunning !! And Jane Medows also
Totally agree.
@@sergioalbuquerque4134 Both seemed adorable.
Audrey Hepburn did the movie 'Wait Until Dark' but Lee Remick did it for a year on Broadway to rave reviews. Those were still the days when a beautiful movie star yearned to prove herself 'on the boards' night after night as a 'real' actress. She was great.
I saw the film version at age 7 in Woodland, CA: those last 20 minutes! We in the audience literally jumped in our seats. My parents apparently did NOT monitor my TV & movie viewing! hahaha
I’m pretty sure she was proved to be a “real actress” 5 years prior when she was nominated for the days of wine and roses
@@courtneywilliams5565 or as Carol in 'Wild River'. Many movie actors used to have this inferiority complex and wanted to prove they could do a live theater performance. Its not my prejudice.
@@courtneywilliams5565 Lee Remick was a fabulous actress and one of my all time favorites.
@@scotnick59 Robert Osborne interviewed Akan Arkin after he won on Oscar for "Little Miss Sunshine" Osborne said that maybe he should have won for "Wait Until" and Arkin roared with laughter.
"NOBODY ever won an Oscar for beating up Audrey Hepburn!!!!!!"
What a pleasure it is to hear these people talk. Theyre educated and so articulate. This show would never make it in todays TV. There would be so many sexual inuendos and irreverence. That was a wonderful time and Im glad to say I lived through it.
I disagree. With all the new professions out there, it would be great to see a remake.
@@PREGO1966 I'm an Old. What is really a new profession out there? (Not a new version of an existing profession.)
@Beatnik I could be wrong but I think aximomist meant it was wonderful being young, taking everything in. If that's what he meant, I agree. Being young... there's nothing remotely like it.
Remick was a true beauty, naturally.
Lee Remick was an 11. Wow!
I once sat next to Lee Remick at a Bette Midler concert in London she was truly special.
Wow. You are such a lucky man, indeed. Did you get an autograph from her?
@@sergioalbuquerque4134 No - however, as an aside I’m not sure it will be relevant for you as you might be unaware of this person as he was a well known personality in the UK who for some unknown reason Des O’Connor was her escort that night.
I once sat next to the great Irish poet, Seamus Heaney, if that helps … oh, and the award-winning journalist, John Pilger.
Jayne Meadows is so gracious
She was 2 years older than her husband.
Lee Remick looked very elegant in this program
The women always dressed so beautifully. Everything in their appearances was perfect.
I like how the men stand up when introduced
It's always interesting the way Arlene would use words carefully to describe women she thought were hefty by calling them sturdy, handsome, or strong. To think by today's standards, that woman doesn't look big and bulky in the least. She's quite tall but she's rather slender as well.
Blyden was the star in my favorite Twilight Zone episode, "A Nice Place to Visit", definitely one of the best.
Even better was his very hard to find (1956?) TV performance in 'What Makes Sammy Run." It's available, but a difficult find - especially for free viewing....also had John Forsythe, Dina Merrill as I remember.
beautiful woman
Time and again on this show you see stars who are so lovely, so personable so completely attractive in so many ways that seem no longer to exist anywhere today. What happened?!
Lee Remick 😍
Lee Remick was so beautiful. I love her 😀
So the egg lady cracks 22,500 eggs a day. If my math is correct, that means she cracks 46.875 eggs every minute. Holy cow!
Easy dosh …
Thank you Larry and on my right is a nice guy Bennett Cerf that is what jayne said in Chinese
I saw her in WAIT UNTIL DARK in the late 60's on Broadway..cool memories
great actress and died fairly young
She wasn't fairly young, she was quite young, dying at just 55.
@@texan903 i know thats awful
I love how elegant and well dressed everyone was. I think it was about respect and self esteem . That's when manners mattered.
Lee Remmick was gorgeous
So was Lee Remick …
I must say this is one of the best. John nails Bennett.
Mr. Blyden, who died 1975, became the third and last host of WML.
This is the only episode I've seen in which only one of the panelists had to be blindfolded.
There was an episode, maybe a year earlier, where only Arlene was blindfolded. The contestant was her music teacher, if I recall correctly.
Gwaithmir March 21, 1965. Arlene’s trombone teacher.
There is another one where Arlene is the only one blindfolded. It’s her tube teacher. She was learning it for a play.
@@marycleary7810
Uhh, trombone, dear, not "tube".
Contestant breaks 22,500 eggs a day ?
In an eight hour shift, that's basically 2 eggs every three seconds.
Back when politeness was the normal, I miss that.
Yes..I noticed too. When one of the panelist guessed "Was she Lauren Bacall? Lee said "No, but thank you"
so true. I miss the old times, people were nicer and happier.
@Jim Stark obsessed much ?
Good god the world was unicorns and rainbows in 2015 eh ?
Beautiful Gorgeous Amazing Women on this Show 💖💯💖💯💖💯...
Love the gowns. I didn’t know that Jane Meadows spoke Chinese. He must’ve had a grant old time laughing at her husband Steve Allen’s marvelous humor.
Jayne Meadows was born in Wuhan, China.
Jayne was a beauty and Steve Allen was an uber-Talent. I loved Jayne's sister Audrey in The Honeymooners and in the Jackie Gleason show when I was a kid. The latter new and the former in reruns.
Lee Remick,............what a babe!!
Lee Remick was good in Wheels. If I could just remember what happened in that series! I just remember that it was exciting. I was very young.
HEAVENS ! (To Mergahtroy)
What a BEAUTY!🎨
Larry Blyden was in a well known episode of The Twilight Zone, "A Nice Place to Visit".
Also another Zone he did was "Showdown with Rance McGrew" a parody of Lash Larue
OMG GORGEOUS 💖💯 GORGEOUS 💖💯 GORGEOUS 💖💯
I am thinking Bennett was thinking what I first thought when seeing the secretary (nice convoluted sentence there Susie lol) When I first saw the secretary my guess she was some old famous Broadway theater actress that Jayne had worked with. She had such striking bearing to her.
The 1967 movie version of "Wait Until Dark" with Audrey Hepburn was one of the scariest films I ever saw in that period. Talk about dry mouth. It must have been truly claustrophobic on the stage.
That, and Audrey Hepburn's ex-husband, Terence Young, directed the film version of Frederick Knott's play. (Robert Duvall played Roat on Broadway, and Mitchell Ryan played Mike Talman. And, by the way, Julie Herrod played Gloria on Broadway - and reprised that role in the movie.)
Man, that was scary ....... a hair-raising end, in that dark kitchen. I sat behind Missy Campbell, and - true story - her hair went straight up when she, me, and the other kids around us screamed like wild things.
Audrey wasn't married to Terence Young, she was married to actor Mel Ferrer who produced the film.
I saw the play; the actors were Sheirley (sic)Jones and Husband Jack Cassidy. There were some screaming in the audience.
My brother saw the play in London and said that the creepy surprise referred to here by Lee and Larry did indeed cause people to jump and scream.
Dazzling woman!
Yikes! Lee Remick was so smoking hot!! She is gorgeous!! But that is just me...
John, you're hardly alone in that observation! LOL
nope-not, just, you, Mr. Stucko.
It's also not the first time that someone has been siding with Stucko.
@@loissimmons6558 You've been watching Bennett Cerf too much. But I have to admit that "siding with Stucko" is funnier than most of Bennett's puns.
John you are definitely not alone in your assessment of Lee Remick unbelievably beautiful classy and dignified what happened to the ladies of that era?
To break 22,000 eggs by hand is very hard job because it takes a lot of patience. This woman had amazing patience. This tells me how hard was earning living in that time. We should thank God for our jobs.
That's my grandma!! She just passed away Sunday 3/14/2021. She was amazing!
What a BEAUTIFUL women MAN!
I wish they had these WML shows in color. Jane Meadows is, in my book, is one of the most beautiful red heads in the entertainment business
Daly's series was all b/w, if you wanna see color look up Waly Bruner's and Larry Blyden's episodes 1968-1975
Six years later, Larry Blyden replaced Wally Bruner as the host of the syndicated version of this show.
Arlene might have gotten a huge laugh. To Jayne -- "They did this to me last year. Ask her about musical instruments."
That's right. Arlene was the only one blindfolded when the contestant was her trombone teacher. ruclips.net/video/-X6n1SLLo64/видео.html
I can’t imagine breaking 22,500 eggs a day in a pan.
Never knew Jayne Meadows spoke Mandarin! She'd have been a good permanent replacement for Dorothy Kilgallen.
Jayne and Audrey Meadows' parents were missionaries. That's how Jayne knows Chinese so well.
Yes, both spoke it fluently
Jayne was actually born in China
Jayne speaks it very well but Audrey admitted she barely remembers it. I saw them on Jenny Jones and Jayne spoke it well but Audrey barely could, this was in the early 90s, so they probably forgot a lot of it.
There's one episode of "I've Got A Secret" where Jayne sings "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" in Chinese.
How did her parents manage to get the position?
It amazing that most people just have no idea of the world around them.
I saw Lee Remick in "Wait Until Dark" as a young teen. There is one point in the play where the stage and entire theater goes dark. I won't spoil it by revealing why or what happens then.
According to Wikipedia, "[w]hen Marilyn Monroe was fired during the filming of the comedy Something's Got to Give, the studio announced that Remick would be her replacement." Dean Martin refused to work with Remick because, although he admired Remick, he had signed onto Something's Got to Give so that he can work with Monroe. Something's Got to Give was never made but 20th Century Fox hired a new director Michael Gordon and a new cast and made some changes here and there to turn Something's Got to Give to Move Over, Darling. Lee Remick replacing Marilyn Monroe? Talk about apples and oranges!
George Cukor and Dean Martin would have found Lee a lot easier and more fun to work with. I suppose Marilyn had acting talent, but I was always more impressed with Lee.
I heard on IMDB that Lee Remick was friends with Marilyn Monroe. Was she really?
I drove with Clay Hyder in Ga & NC over the Southeastern States under the name of Mr. Hyde.
Jayne was the only one who said happy Easter, I hope she believed ❤
*Pogonologist:* n. One who makes a study of beards; a writer on beards.
from The Century Dictionary and Cyclopedia
(This according to wordnik.com) -- And I thought Bennett meant that John had tremendous knowledge of the comic strip, "Pogo" by Walt Kelly. You know, a "Pogo-knowledge-ist!" ;)
At 14:30 John calls Bennett "my little beardless pogonologist" -- as far as I can tell, the first time tonight's "secret word" has been mentioned in terms of beards. Either John's vocabulary was as deep as Bennett's, or they discussed it beforehand or during a commercial. I don't often have to consult a dictionary, but I had to for this one.
But surely ("don't call me...") blindfolding only Jayne was an avoidable clue?
Nice speed on the questions in the final round!
When I heard the tall, black haired lady was a professional egg breaker, it really “cracked” me up!
In the second segment, Blyden got Daly'ed with one of John's garden-path explanations.
Lee should have done the film Wait Until Dark.
RIP
Would love to have seen that. I think to my knowledge.Mel Ferrer was involved as a director in the film. Audrey though truly was excellent in the role though. Mel was Audrey’s husband.
Lee Remick shows up once more on the program as a guest panelist.
And from what I heard, she was terrific. On par with Phyllis Newman and Suzy Knickerbocker.
So sad that we'd lose her to cancer at the age of 56.
I thought she was a great panelist.
I've been noticing the all the women move gracefully because they aren't on today's ridiculously high, high heels that create such a silly, stilted walk. Hard to understand why they do it. Fashion.
You answered your own question!
@@donaldmanthei1224 By golly, you're right! (-:
Marieke I don’t understand it. It seems that women are trapped in those high heels. Not exactly girl power.
If you like Lee Remick, check out the show with Natalie Wood.
First appearance of Larry Blyden on WML -- with Arlene. Let's just say that it will not be his last appearance. I don't know if he was busy with LUV, or if he did not set G-T on fire, or if G-T did not light Larry up, Larry appeared only a few times on WML 1966.
Larry became host of wml in 1972.
When I was a kid I wanted Lee Remick to be my Mother.
Another peak into the future of "What's My Line?". Larry Blyden is a guest panelist. He was also guest panelist and Mystery Guest on the Syndicated era, (1968-1972), before he replaced Wally Bruner (1972-1975).
He died too young in a car accident. He was going to host a charades game show for Goodson-Todman called "Show-Offs".
His death in that Morroco car wreck was truly disastrous for G-T. "Show Offs" was practically designed for Larry's talents. Bobby Van replaced Larry on the run, because the premiere was a few weeks after Larry died. The show lasted under a year.
soulierinvestments
I vaguely remember the "Show Offs" program, but I didn't know anything about the Larry Blyden tragedy at the time.
I remember Larry Blyden's death because I was on vacation. I was in Portland and the news got reported in the Oregonian, though not only the front page. The news was not on the front page of newspapers in most places.
Wikipedia points out that the authorities delayed in providing details about Blyden's death, that there were discrepancies, and quotes someone who says that the death was not accidental at all, but criminal. The truth is likely lost forever.
the egg lady has slightly more than a full second for each egg.
@ian poultry
You're presuming she worked an 8-hour day. She may or may not have worked the typical work shift of today's American workforce.
A rare episode where out of four challengers, all of them are female.
Very rare. I can only remember two or three others in the entire run of the show.
Larry replaced by John in colorized version of this tv show
I liked Larry as the host. Very pleasant. Sad when he died in June 1975.
*Quiz* *Question*: Lee Remick was on the show to promote the play "Wait Until Dark". In the play, and in the movie (starring Audrey Hepburn), the blind heroine breaks all bulbs in her apartment in order to escape from the murderer so he can't see her. But she forgets one (I think we all should have done the same!), which one? :)
Is this found in every ordinary apartment?
soulierinvestments Yes, but you never think about it. :)
+David Von Pein Right you are sir! :) Spoiler alert: The bulb in the refrigerator.
David Von Pein
Wow! I've never seen the movie or the play, and I think it might be a bit too scary for me, but after looking at your photo gallery, I am wondering... what is the reason in the plot that the blind heroine is lighting a match?
Because the bad guy has a can of gasoline and she needs to defend herself somehow. So she lights the match as a form of defense, so the guy won't somehow set himself on fire.
They needed to tell the audience to applaud and not whistle. A dead giveaway that it's an attractive female.
If they were to ever make a movie about Jayne Meadows, I think Rose McGowen could fit the bill perfectly. I can't get over how similar they look.
Wow. Get a load of Lee Remick's mini-dress.
Note that by the 1960's episodes of WML, the women's wardrobe had mostly changed. Gone were the long evening gowns, and in were the mini-skirts and mini-dresses.
Arlene and Jayne both had particularly beautiful gowns in this episode, though, imo (00:57 and 1:40). I also really liked Lee's dress, and you can see Arlene admiring it as Lee walks off the set (20:47). I wouldn't exactly call it a mini-dress, though -- it was almost to her knees; I think the hemline needs to be much higher to qualify as a mini.
Mini-dress? No, not really. Its hem was just at the top of Lee Remick's kneecap. Mini-skirts and mini-dresses had their hems a number of inches above the knee showing off quite a lot of thigh. Some of them were so short women couldn't sit down without showing off more than was decent.
+SaveThe TPC
While Jayne's gown was lovely, it didn't seem to me that the Empire waist flattered her figure. Arlene's gown was particularly beautiful and one of many I wish I could see in color.
she breaks 22,500 eggs a day? that's almost 3000 eggs an hour, how is that even possible?
+tomitstube It almost seems physically impossible. That's 45-50 eggs per minute or damn near one every single second of the day. I can't imagine anyone being able to keep up that pace for 8 hours per day.
Jeff Vaughn exactly, you broke it down even more, and the feat becomes even less possible.
Impressive, yes. That would require very good technique handling those eggs.
I'd be surprised if that's a job that exists today though. Anything that specialised is probably done by a machine.
Jeff Vaughn Anyone who has ever worked an assembly line can see this is possible. If you do something regularly day in day out, you develop a rhythm to it and basically zone out while you're doing it. I worked for years in semiconductor assembly before they automated most of the production steps. If I could work with. Tweezers under a microscope and attach .001" gold wires to those chips at the rate of 3500 per hr then egg cracking should be s doddle
As a former Denny's cook, I can assure you that (breaking 2 eggs at a time; one each hand) an average rate of 2815 per hour is entirely possible for anyone with normal hand/eye coordination (and toned forearm muscles)! I must add, however, that at the restaurant, I hardly ever had to exceed the breaking of 600 eggs per shift. (This was for buckets of what we called "egg wash"...much like the cartons of EggBeaters you buy at the grocery store. This egg wash was used exclusively for either scrambled egg or omelet orders.)
It is considered bad luck in show business to wish a performer good luck in connection with their upcoming performance. So it is traditional to tell a performer "break a leg." How much good luck was accruing to the second challenger for all the times she broke an egg?
Since when is that the "middle of California" and since when would that be considered "north of San Francisco?"
Yes, it's actually east-southeast of San Francisco across the bay.
I wondered about that!
Was this the first time that only one member of the panel was blindfolded and the others weren't in regards to Jayne Meadows? Someone help me out. lol
+Ryan Sully
No. There was at least one other time when Arlene was the only one blindfolded for the person who was teaching her how to play trombone. As I recall, the panel was stumped on that person.

Does anyone know what commercial Steve Allen appear with his secretary in?
Bathtub gin?
Was Bennett Cerf under the weather? He usually beats around the bush incessantly about the identity of the mystery guest before offering up a name.
I agree with Walter about respect and being well dressed and everyone having manners. I'm also quite pleased to see that many of the women on the show have very diverse and professional as well as non gender occupations.
At the recommendation of epaddon on tv.com, I saw the 1967 film version of "Wait Until Dark" with Audrey Hepubrn. A good film, with good performances, especially from Audrey.
In addition to the original Broadway Play, at the same time, there was also a version for London's West End theaters, with Honor Blackman (later Barbara Murray) in the Lee Remick role.
And another fun fact about Frederick Knott's "Wait Until Dark" (he also wrote the play "Dial M For Murder") on Broadway is that Robert Duvall played Roat opposite Lee Remick as Suzy in that original Broadway run.
What does a Pogonologist study?
: the study of or a treatise on beards.

What the h . . . who in our group translates from the Chinese?
My Mandarin is very very rusty, but I _think_ she said, "谢谢 Larry. 个喂绅士, 个喂女士. 身在一个朋友美国人 恒有一臧魂著名, 我的好朋友 Bennett Cerf!" This would be, "Thanks, Larry. Greetings gentlemen, greetings ladies. [We] Americans are lucky to have such a steadfast friend and famous soul, my good friend Bennett Cerf!"
MajorSeventh and thanx for your expertise. For all I know about Mandarian, she could have been doing a commercial for fiberglas draperies.
soulierinvestments Didn't Mandarian make her movie debut in that massive international hit, winner of 12 Academy Awards, _Fluffy?_
MajorSeventh Lol! Btw, I have usually been impressed with the Translate feature on RUclips, but here's how it translated the Chinese characters you wrote: "Thank you, Larry. A feed gentleman, a lady feeding. Americans are in a constant friend Zang has a famous soul, my friend Bennett Cerf!"
Any idea how "feed" or "feeding" came into it?
SaveThe TPC If you use Internet Explorer and you highlight the text and right click, you can select "Translate with Bing." It gives "Hello gentlemen, hello ladies." (With my limited Mandarin I don't remember ever hearing the expression "个喂" _ge wei_, lit. _a hello_, so I assumed it was more formal and rendered it _greetings_. The second character "喂" _wei_ is _hello_, and it's with that word that Chinese people answer the telephone - but not greet each other in person.) :)
Steve Allen must pay his secretary good the way she's dressed 🤔
i bet her Chinese was gibberish
At 10:32 that's not a particularly perspicacious question.
Not the same without Dorothy Kilgallen.
