    1950's were so magical and elegant.

    • @daler.steffy1047
      @daler.steffy1047 20 дней назад

      Having been born in 1948, I spent my childhood growing up in the "freewheeling years" (from a child's perspective) of the 1950s. They were magical; I agree with you. We were always outside, usually with a bunch of our neighborhood kids, roaming about through the yards, and wandering about on the streets, playing "Cowboys" and "Army" and "Kick-the Can"; and Hula Hoops and YoYos...; and bicycling all over the place, with the main restriction put on me to get home in time for dinner or go to bed. Otherwise, I was pretty much free to do what I wanted to after school, or on the weekends, and during vacations. My parents were very trusting and very loving people. During the 1950s, we lived in Columbus, Ohio, on Hampshire Street, in the Eastmoor Subdivision. And I remember that when we traveled by car down to South Carolina during one winter break, and to Sarasota, Florida on another winter break, people were in awe of "You" because you were from Out-of-State. And if you saw somebody in a car that was from YOUR state, and this could be anywhere in the United States, they "automatically" felt a kinship, as in becoming your new friends, your new "neighbors." (And, interestingly, you might only talk to these folks from your same state for just a few minutes at the gas station, or in a restaurant, and then never see them again; but that didn't matter, because this was a wonderful example of living in the moment. Odd, yes, but simply...beautiful.) I continue to reflect on my childhood experiences during that decade, while living now across the country in northern California; but I can still recall so many beautiful moments that have now become deeply treasured memories. ~drs (07/04/24)

    Tom Eagleton, the St. Louis DA on this show, eventually became a U.S. Senator for Missouri. He is best known as George McGovern's first choice as running mate in 1972. Eagleton had to drop out and be replaced when it was revealed that he had been treated for several episodes of severe clinical depression and hadn't told the McGovern team about it.

His performance is Paul Newman's father in "Hud" in itself is always worth seeing, especially when his entire herd of cattle must be euthanized and buried, due to acquiring hoof and mouth disease, thus bringing about his downfall, through the actions of his wayward, prodigal son. Not to mention, Ninotchka, and so many other great performances during his career.

    Bennett Cerf notes in his introduction that many New York newspapers doubled their price that week. Three evening papers, the Post, the Journal-American, and the World-Telegram & Sun, went from a nickel to a dime per copy. The morning papers (the Times and the Herald Tribune) held the line at five cents for the time being. This puts the $50 prize money in perspective to some extent.

    Tom Eagleton wasn't the only one on this episode with political connections. Melvyn Douglas was married to Helen Gahagan Douglas, a three-term U.S. Representative who lost the 1950 U.S. Senate race in California to Richard Nixon. John Daly later became the son-in-law of Earl Warren, Chief Justice of the United States, governor of California, and 1948 vice presidential nominee. So just looking at the vice presidency, there was a future (brief) vice presidential nominee, the husband of a candidate who lost to a future vice president, and the future son-in-law of a vice presidential nominee. And that's just the beginning.

    INTERESTING SIDE NOTE: The man named Tom Eagleton, who was a district attorney from St.Louis in this episode, was the Democratic nominee for Vice President for 18 days in 1972. He dropped out of the election after the press revealed that he had been hospitalized 3 times in the 1960's for depression and stress and had undergone electric shock therapy.

  • @Baskerville22
    @Baskerville22 5 лет назад +7

    The 2nd contestant, Thomas "Tom" Eagleton (September 4, 1929 - March 4, 2007) was later a United States Senator from Missouri, serving from 1968 to 1987. He is best remembered for briefly being the Democratic vice presidential nominee under George McGovern in 1972. He suffered from bouts of depression throughout his life, resulting in several hospitalizations, which were kept secret from the public. When they were revealed, it humiliated the McGovern campaign and Eagleton was forced to quit the race. He later became adjunct professor of public affairs at Washington University in St. Louis.

We also subscribed to the Long Island Daily/Sunday Press as our afternoon paper.

      @@markxxx21 I think highly of Arlene: did when she was alive. She always liked men, but was merely flirtatious and was not a woman who would make or encourage an actual pass by someone. She was married to the best in terms of talent, intellect and solicitous treatment of her and she was happy in her life. She was a happily liberated woman without needing to call it that. She saw no conflict in having a happy, busy career and marriage and motherhood. I think part of her comments to men to kid them were a way for her to publicly challenge the ridiculous whistling and shouting and carrying on by men for half the women who ever appeared. She was with great humor and panache saying, "Wait a minute, we notice men, too, and like them a lot." She was well-respected by even the substitute panelists like Tony Randall because they knew of her honest, generous, kind reputation in show biz, which is known for cattiness and selfishness she did not possess. If you notice, she quite often is the one who brings up the new work the mystery guest is there to promote and gives it a hearty review, so as to make sure they get the publicity for their hard work that they deserve and were, in fact, scheduled to promote, even if John forgets.

Mr. Eagleton served in the executive branch, though _many_ people misunderstand the distinction (even misstating it in official state documents) and think DAs are in the judicial branch.
