Hey Daniel, Question about redeeming points for travel. When transferring to a parter, let’s say United, can you redeem using point and cash. If I don’t have 200k points. Can I use like 150k points and pay the difference in cash?
My setup: Blue Cash Preferred [Amex]($75 annual fee)- 6% Groceries Chase Amazon Prime [Visa] ($150 annnual fee)- 5% Amazon Citi Custom Cash [Master Card]($0)- 5% Restaurants Citi Custom Cash[Master Card]($0) - 5% Drugstore (2nd card wife's) Citi Costco [Visa]($150 annual fee) - 4% Gas Capital One Venture X [Visa]($395 annual fee) - Costco and catch-All I wish there was a 5% for Costco instore purchases.
This might be a dumb question but I’ve never had a credit card before and I really just wanna build my credit score, I use a debit Bank of America card. How does one get “approved” for a credit card?
Yeah its a bit tricky as they look for credit history to see if your eligible but since you have none they will be reluctant to issue you a card. I would start out on a "Discover It" card as it kinda half way from a debit card and credit card. You pay money into it as an advance and they they allow you to spend your own money and in return they give you credit. Once you get started and have a credit history the offers will start coming in form everywhere.
If one is paying off entire balance every month having a credit card can be a good thing. Using someone else's money interest free for 15-45 days. All else is a scam that is forcing you to spend more in order to earn few pennies on the dollar. Might as well keep your money in a savings account. Some pay up to 5% interest.
Think you could do a video for active military? As an example, what would you recommend for us since annual fees are automatically waived while we’re in?
same here, nobody has actually given me a straight forward answer most people say just get all of them, but for me i have my eyes on the Savor One card for 3% cashback at restaurants and grocery stores and Custom Cash for 5% cashback on gas. What cards are you looking at?
Curious why no one seems to talk about the Fidelity Visa card (unlimited 2% on everything when deposited into a Fidelity account) when talking about a catch all card? It has no foreign transaction fees and also waives additional driver fees for rental cars. Seems better than the Citi double cash to me since you can use it abroad without fees (as long as you're not trying to transfer points within the Citi ecosystem, which you likely aren't if you're doing a cashback setup).
I feel like the csp and savor one overlap in the spending categories. I currently have the venture X and freedom flex a d am thinking to go csp next so I can unlock those chase points. As for groceries I spend abt $300 a month and the 3x vs 2x isn’t a huge difference. Thoughts?
Super helpful as always! My fiance and I are thinking about getting a card to share and are leaning towards the capital one venture x. The only way to do this is to have a primary user and an authorized user. Would each person still have access to the benefits of the card?
Fantastic video!! Just got the Capital one VX card, but I also have the Chase SP, they are both travel cards and the VX seems to rack up points a bit faster (2x on everything etc), would you recommend keeping them both or downgrading the Chase to a no fee one?
Hi Daniel, i just downloaded your points transfer budget sheet (thank you so much for that!) i had a quick question about inputting values and was wondering which was more accurate. I'm looking at flights from sfo to hnl and on google flights it's $357. On chase portal it's $414 for the same flight. In your sheet in the cash section, which number would be correct to in put. 357 or 414?
Always the cheaper option because that’s the “true” market price to make the decision to redeem points or not. Sometimes the portals have inflated prices, so good job for spotting that. Thanks for downloading that sheet as well!
@@Daniel_Braun that makes sense. Thanks Daniel. I have the Sapphire Reserve and using the calculations, 1.5cpp is still the number to beat right? Even if standard is 1cpp and I find a flight that is worth 1.41cpp, since I get 1.5cpp conversion, it usually makes sense for me to redeem through portal?
Correct! 1.5 cpp is the number to beat with the CSR (assuming that the price in the portal is competitive with prices for the same travel elsewhere). It’s pretty much just comparing options anytime you wanna use point to book travel.
Yes. You can share rewards under the rewards tab I do it all the time. I use Savor when I go out to eat or expense for a client dinner and I transfer them over as reward miles
Hi Daniel! I really enjoy your videos and refer to them every time I get a new card. Question for you: BF and I are splitting a lot of costs and we wan to have a credit card under my name that we pay off together as it will be a lot easier for budgeting. Which card would you recommend: credit score is 750+, I currently have the Discover It and Sapphire preferred. Thinking of getting AMEX Blue cash preferred. 2. What is your experience with AMEX? I am concerned there may be lots of businesses like restaurants, stores and gas stations (that don't accept it due to high fees). Want to know what your experience with this is using your AMEX. Thanks!!
I need some help! I am a student looking to get into the credit card game. I still pay rent so I was thinking of applying for the BILT MC for the benefits it provides. I also travel a lot (flying) for work/school and some domestic flight family vacations (I enjoy traveling and want to start building sooner than later). I like the CSP rewards and transfers but don’t know if I will qualify due to my lack of credit duration on my current card. Should I start with the CFU or try to get the CSP to pair with my BILT? Any advice is appreciated
Unless your credit is pretty solid they might not even consider you. He has a different video about the “optimal” order to get credit cards. A good starter card is “Discover it” or even chase freedom or citi 2% back. Once you have those for like 3 months, you can add another card, and repeat until you have about 4 or 5 cards
Hi Daniel, I'll be staying in a hotel for work for about six months straight. Which hotel credit card would you recommend for the best value in this situation? Thanks
With that many nights, I would think about elite status as well as which chain has hotels in the places you'd want to go for leisure travel trips. The goal would likely be to earn status and tons of points for places you'd want to travel. With 60 nights in Hyatts in a year, you'd get Hyatt's top tier Globalist status which most consider the most valuable hotel status in the game. Plus they just added extra benefits for every 10 nights, so with that many nights you could get the Milestone perks at 70, 80, 90, etc. nights as well. The perk for 150 nights has the new uncapped free night certificate, plus you'd get a number of other free night certificates along the way. You could supplement that with the World of Hyatt card for 1 Cat 1-4 free night certificate per year plus another one if you put $15k in spend on it in a year, plus it could earn you even more elite nights (Though there are no milestone benefits beyond 150 nights). If Hilton sounds better, you could do the Surpass or Aspire to earn a lot of points and an uncapped free night certificate or so (with $15k spend on the Surpass, or included with Aspire). You would just earn the Gold or Diamond status through the credit card alone so all the nights you'd be staying there wouldn't be as valuable aside from the points you'd earn. Though I supposed you could earn Diamond status through your stays while only paying the $150 Surpass card if you didn't want a premium card If Marriott works well for you, you could make the case of getting the Amex Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant for the 85k free night and Platinum status, or the Chase Bonvoy Boundless for 35k free night for only $95, and using all these elite nights from work to help you get closer to lifetime status levels. The Bonvoy Boundless has that 5 50k free night certs sign up bonus going on now which is really good.
ik this is kind of an old video, but im currently on the verge of applying for an amex gold with 90k SUB, I already have the savor one and the amex blue, but currently don't have any travel cards, or points cards, I use Uber a lot since I currently don't drive myself, so I take advantage of the S1 10% cashback for everything uber related, but since thats expiring at the end of the year, should I get the amex gold as an everyday spend card and have my savor one as my "fallback" or secondary card, hope someone reads this and replies hehe.
I wish I can call you so you can tell me what card to get lol. This my first one and I will like to travel more. American express card too much for me. I Dont care about cash back I want maximize my flight points.
@daniel_braun - is it inefficient or suboptimal to mix across these categories? Meaning of the 5 credit cards, having a mix of travel-focused (e.g., Venture X) with cash back-focused (e.g., Custom Cash)? Do you recommend only sticking to 1 vs the other?
You could probably answer this yourself by doing more research into the cards you think is best and then checking your budget. What's best depends on your budget anyways
Why don’t anyone cover the US Bank altitude reserve? That card is amazing and super super easy to use the 325$ credit. And super easy to get enough value to fully cover the as fuck with points.
Probably the lack of transfer partners to airlines. The 3% cash back on mobile wallet purchases (4.5% when redeemed for travel) is nice, but I would rather stick with the Venture X at 2x for general purchases, and get an effective 4% - 6% back when using transfer partners.
No transfer partners is probably the biggest reason. You can’t have a luxury travel card and not have transfer partners when EVERY other competitor’s luxury card has transfer partners
@@robotnik1937 i guess that could be it I frankly treat it as a cash back card I don’t care about transfer partners. The 325 is super easy to use no hoops to jump and to offset the annual fee it only takes like 11k spend all on 3x and all my bills like car insurance, phone bill groceries etc all accepts apple pay so technically am getting 325 a year free.
You only get the 3% on groceries if you are willing to over pay for groceries by 10% or more 😂 You don’t get points at Walmart or any of the discount grocery stores/clubs. Further, many of the discount grocery outlets don’t accept credit cards.

Capital One Venture X [Visa]($395 annual fee) - Costco and catch-All
I wish there was a 5% for Costco instore purchases.
I wonder what a perfect setup would be minus the sign up bonus
can you make a video of choosing 1 card from each category? meaning which 5 cards for 5 reasons for 2024.
Do travel points expire?
A black henley huh? That's a new look indeed. Good video!
So what will be the best card to use for beginners with bad credit and that doesn't want to pay an annual fee?
In your capitol one video can you show good examples of redeeming miles on hotels
Capital one venture x and Amex Platinum must have.
The blue cash back can changed for points?
Think you could do a video for active military? As an example, what would you recommend for us since annual fees are automatically waived while we’re in?
same here, nobody has actually given me a straight forward answer most people say just get all of them, but for me i have my eyes on the Savor One card for 3% cashback at restaurants and grocery stores and Custom Cash for 5% cashback on gas. What cards are you looking at?
Is the Chase Freedom Unlimited a good option for a catch all card?
I think it’s decent, but I wish it were 2X instead of 1.5X
People be sleeping on the Lowes 5% card and BoA 3.25% cash back on 2 categories and $2500 per quarter. No annual fees for either
I do the Amex Platinum card, Gold card, Green card combo
Any reason to double up on the green and platinum other than the SUB?
I'm using US bank attitude go to replace amex, as it offer 4x on food but no annual fee
Curious why no one seems to talk about the Fidelity Visa card (unlimited 2% on everything when deposited into a Fidelity account) when talking about a catch all card? It has no foreign transaction fees and also waives additional driver fees for rental cars. Seems better than the Citi double cash to me since you can use it abroad without fees (as long as you're not trying to transfer points within the Citi ecosystem, which you likely aren't if you're doing a cashback setup).
can you go from say chase ultimate to chase flex in 12 months ?does anyone know
I feel like the csp and savor one overlap in the spending categories. I currently have the venture X and freedom flex a d am thinking to go csp next so I can unlock those chase points.
As for groceries I spend abt $300 a month and the 3x vs 2x isn’t a huge difference.
Thoughts?
Can someone living in England 🏴 like myself get some or even all of these Credit Cards?
Great video. I want to apply for a Chase card, but I am not sure if I need a banking relationship?
I just got approved for a freedom flex, solid credit score but with no banking relationship!!
Do you have a video for people who are looking for 1 travel credit card?
Super helpful as always! My fiance and I are thinking about getting a card to share and are leaning towards the capital one venture x. The only way to do this is to have a primary user and an authorized user. Would each person still have access to the benefits of the card?
Can you
Explain the values when it says 5% and x5 difference?
Fantastic video!! Just got the Capital one VX card, but I also have the Chase SP, they are both travel cards and the VX seems to rack up points a bit faster (2x on everything etc), would you recommend keeping them both or downgrading the Chase to a no fee one?
Vx points are worth less than SP points
@@Ben-he4jxHow do you figure?
Let’s go we are early!
It’s pretty much just comparing options anytime you wanna use point to book travel.
can you go from say chase ultimate to chase flex in 12 months ?
Isn't there something to be said for only having one Credit Card
Can you transfer the venture to the Savor One?
Yes. You can share rewards under the rewards tab I do it all the time. I use Savor when I go out to eat or expense for a client dinner and I transfer them over as reward miles
@@xarbinchaoticneutral1785 sorry I meant is there an upgrade or downgrade path
Hi Daniel! I really enjoy your videos and refer to them every time I get a new card.
Question for you: BF and I are splitting a lot of costs and we wan to have a credit card under my name that we pay off together as it will be a lot easier for budgeting. Main categories would be groceries, restaurants, gas, streaming, Amazon, household goods / furniture etc., your normal household expenses that people share.
Thanks!!
I like how you broke this down. Good vid
Thanks Lani! Much appreciated man
Download?
I have all five of these credit cards since 2016
I need some help!
Once you have those for like 3 months, you can add another card, and repeat until you have about 4 or 5 cards
nice setup, mines CFF for groceries, CCC for dining and CSP for dining
Nothing for gas?
@@creativekiiier1649 I used the 5% wholesale gas and I got the cash card CFF last quarter and still using that.
You’re not bothered not being able to pool your points into one ecosystem?
Though I supposed you could earn Diamond status through your stays while only paying the $150 Surpass card if you didn't want a premium card
If Marriott works well for you, you could make the case of getting the Amex Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant for the 85k free night and Platinum status, or the Chase Bonvoy Boundless for 35k free night for only $95, and using all these elite nights from work to help you get closer to lifetime status levels.
The savor card looks promising
is this for the wealthy people?
Tafada credit cards are also a great option.
Wells Fargo autograph already dethroned half of these
I tried downgrading my capital one card and they politely told me to fuck off. Do not tell people this is an option!
Why don’t anyone cover the US Bank altitude reserve? That card is amazing and super super easy to use the 325$ credit. And super easy to get enough value to fully cover the as fuck with points.
I have this card and love it.
Probably the lack of transfer partners to airlines. The 3% cash back on mobile wallet purchases (4.5% when redeemed for travel) is nice, but I would rather stick with the Venture X at 2x for general purchases, and get an effective 4% - 6% back when using transfer partners.
Luke's Points and Miles is working on a WF setup.
Need an updated video for 2025
You only get the 3% on groceries if you are willing to over pay for groceries by 10% or more 😂
You don’t get points at Walmart or any of the discount grocery stores/clubs. Further, many of the discount grocery outlets don’t accept credit cards.
I recently figured out the Amex Blue cash card gets 3% back if you are willing to use it through Walmart pay. That might be worth a try.
Best card for Gas?
Citi Custom Cash if you make it your dedicated gas card.
Does Chase sapphire preferred ever send out those pre-approved mailers? My credit acceptance paranoia is next level 😅
I'd feel more confident even if my credit score is fine...
as long as you have a strong credit profile you should be fine, I am the same way and when I applied I got instantly approved, I did have 2 other chase cards though
Yes. I got one earlier this year
If I already have the Freedom Unlimited, but could not get the freedom flex, should I apply for the sapphire preferred anyway?
Or should I change my unlimited to flex and then get the sapphire preferred?
I got the discover it card and the Apple Card also 😅
I am already pre-approved to the sapphire and Amex gold card
Amex Gold is trash after they ditched the airline credit for Uber credits.
Five cards is the optimum number that the FICO models are designed for.
I joke that it's because the FICO boys can only count on one hand😂😂😂
