    I was invited to a TM meeting just before Thanksgiving. When the person asked me to come I had no idea what Toastmaster is, after she explained what it's all about I was curious and went. Everyone was friendly and professional. Impressive !!! So glad that I found this video because I am planning of joining the group, now I know what to expect as a newbie.

    Wade, 9am in Australia. I crushed my Ice Breaker speech last night. After the speech, the MC lead the applause when I finished. Then everyone STOOD while applauding. Stunned, that has never happened in my life before. I don't know if that is the culture of Alpha Toastmasters, it was overwhelming. The next speech and fulfilling roles at the Club meetings. Regards to you always.

    I just joined the Cervantes Toastmasters online group. So I need to write my speech in English and then Google it in Spanish. It's all good though. I'm not funny so I won't try humor but I plan to be interesting and pleasant. Just be myself. However, I tested my speech in front of my computer camera and I could see that I needed to be a bit more animated. A little preparation is good and allows you to start with your best foot forward.

    • @wadepaterson
      @wadepaterson  6 месяцев назад

      Congrats on joining the online group! That sounds like quite the challenge (translating to Spanish), but good for you for taking that step.
      It's difficult to be animated when speaking to a computer camera because you don't have direct audience feedback (laughter/clapping/etc), but remember to look directly in that camera lens to give the illusion you're giving the crowd eye contact. And yes, ramp up the body language. You're going to do great!

    Thank you I joined toastmasters two months ago and I sat and observed as a guest. I delivered my speech but discovered that I was the speech I gave was not an ice breaker speech. Your video was really helpful in providing me with the steps and guidelines on how to organize a great ice breaker speech. I did the prepared speech 5-7 minutes and my evaluator really critique that speech with positive feedback in addition to letting me know that I gave the wrong speech in a very harsh tone. I will be giving my ice breaker speech this coming Tuesday and will utilize your points on how to give a successful ice breaker speech. Thanks again!!

    • @wadepaterson
      @wadepaterson  2 года назад

      First off, thanks so much for the kind words and for taking the time to watch this video. Second, I tend to disagree with the approach your evaluator gave. Constructive criticism and positive feedback is great, but to speak to a new Toastmasters member in a harsh tone isn't a very good approach in my opinion. I made plenty of mistakes when I first joined Toastmasters (I think everyone does), but the point is to learn and grow.
      Best of luck with your Ice Breaker Speech next Tuesday. I would love to hear how it goes afterward (feel free to come back and comment).

    Sir should it be non fictional

    • @wadepaterson
      @wadepaterson  Год назад

      Great question!
      The vast majority of Ice Breakers are non-fiction; however, I think it would be fascinating to see a "fictional take" on an Ice Breaker.
      As an example, let's say you always wanted to be a Firefighter, but ended up working at a restaurant. The first part of your story could be a fictional tale about you putting out a fire... then you could say: "That's what my life could've been... instead, I wait tables and live with regret." (Haha, depressing example, but you get the idea.)
      So yes, non-fiction is the safe, common route. But if you have a way to make it fictional and still fit the objectives, I say go for it!
