Frontwoman Nina Persson told The Independent on Sunday February 1, 2009 that this song concerning physical abuse is not autobiographical. She explained: "I'm lucky, I've never been in a violent relationship, so that song wasn't autobiographical. But the subject, that whole kind of thing... it fascinates me."
Of all the beautiful and talented female singers who emerged during the 90s, Nina would probably be close to the top of both lists for me. God, I miss that decade.
Are the people listening to this actually hearing the lyrics? Because I adore the song, but I would never say it's romantic. It's painful and truthful, but believe me you don't want what this song says.
... how do people miss what the song is like. [as a not-really-a-fan-of-country-guy] it's like Garth Brook's "The Thunder Rolls" pretty goddamn straightforward what's going on
The Cardigans do it like nobody else - an almost saccharine feel with a bitterly nasty aftertaste. Their kind of sweet melancholy seems especially Scandinavian and this song absolutely socks you right in the heart, as she sings. It has to be drawn from personal experience, surely.
I personally think this is so different. I've never heard lyrics like hers anywhere else who talk about absolute loyalty and love to someone who is harming you. Ive experienced it a lot in my life, this song always makes me cry but just an atmosphere if you don't really listen to the words. Cardigans are exceptional. I wish I'd managed to see them live. I played this to the love of my life before we got together and when we did out relationship was like this.
A few years ago I met her at a lowland festival(Netherlands)where I had to play the same day. We had a lot of fun backstage and had a drink together. Nice girl and good memories.
I just can't seem to emotionally get over this song after I first heard it. I understand the logic of a victim's mentality in a long-term abusive relationship..... but this song really really made me feel it deep in my soul. Especially the ending parts of this song... It just feels like the victim trying to convince herself that all the hits were a manifestation of love. The more bloody, the more she was loved. And she loves the fact that she was loved... "you strike with your silence" (don't ignore me) "you haunt me with your violence baby come hit me" (pls love me more) But "you haunt me with your violent heartbeat" ending stops the song with her actual feeling - how much she fears her abuser. And now I'm a ball of emotional mess.
amazing... about 8 or so years I downloaded the song by a mistake and I really liked the way it sound, it just hit me to listen to this song a few years later and kind of warmth and nostalgia just took all over my body and heart especially her voice....
Yes Nina Persson is really really BEAUTIFUL. And she's the absolutely BEST and the most TALENTED singer songwriter in the world EVER. And she has the most WONDERFUL voice EVER. And it's a shame that she is so underrated as she is because she REALLY REALLY DESERVES to be much more FAMOUS for all the BEAUTIFUL work she has done when she has written so many BEAUTIFUL songs since she started to writing songs for The Cardigans in the 90's. Because Nina Persson is my absolute favorite vocalist EVER and i will always love her for all the BEAUTIFUL songs that she has made. She is REALLY REALLY a LEGEND in the music world.
Man I've had a few But they wouldn't quit blow me like you You gave me your name and sight With a halo around my eye And it hits me like never before That love is a powerful force Yes it struck me that love is as bored So I pushed you a little bit more Love, you're news to me You're a little bit more then I thought you'd be A mow in my well fed lawn You're a nightmare beating the dawn Oh it hits me like never before That love is a powerful force Yes it struck me that love is a sport So I pushed you a little bit more Blue, blue, black and blue Red blood sticks like glue True love is cruel love Red blood say power fuel Sweet love tasty blood My heart overfloods Oh you hit me Yeah you hit me really hard Man you hit me Yeah you hit me right in the heart Lord I've had my deal But I never quite knew how it feels When love makes you wake up soar With fists that are ready for more And it hits me that love is a game Like in war no one can be blamed Yes it struck me that love is a sport So I pushed you a little bit more Blue, blue, black and blue Red blood sticks like glue True love is cruel love Red blood say power fuel Sweet love tasty blood My heart overfloods Man you hit me Yeah you hit me really hard Baby you hit me Yeah you punched me right in the heart And then you kissed me And then you hit me Oh you hold me with your violent heartbeat at night Oh you strike me with your silence baby tonight Why you hold me with your violence baby come hit me You hold me with your violent heartbeat
No words.....simply a beautiful yet brutally honest song. Couldn't be put together/created in a better way, pic usage......ebb & flow....muy hermosa........didn't expect this, makes it even more intriguing. Guess I did manage a word or two....l.o.l...all true. Thank you for this vid, it is much appreciated.
I can see why victims of domestic violence interpret the song this way. But I understand it differently. For me it's about emotional violence, narcissism maybe, getting near and then striking an emotional blow, (like she sings, you hit me right in the heart, or , you strike me with your silence) getting away and staying silent, getting back etc.... Violence ins not restricted to physical violence.
I agree I interpreted her having a few meaning this song to me is like having failed past relationships and he hit her with The ❤❤❤❤.. And then u kissed me as to Defines one who doesn't believe in love only lusts no respect and has a few individuals broken hearted until A PERSON WHO SIMPLY HAS A PAST COMES HER WAY AND IS THE COMPLETE OPPOSITE OF WHAT WAS IMPLANTED TO HER (U KNOW GOSSIP) SO WHEN VERSE SAYS UR NEWS TO ME SIGNIFIES SHE DIDNT EXPECT ATTRACTION AFFECTION AND A BLEEDING HEART YEARNING TO BE LOVED RIGHT BACK
I interpreted it with actual physical violence ("halo around my eye" sounds like a face punch bruise) interspersed with love bombing. The ending is just her being tormented by the lover's own existence, but still wanting him/her to abuse her instead of ignoring her because after the hits are the love bombs (and then you hit me, and then you kissed me). It's haunting if it's just hits and silence. What she's waiting for are the kisses after the hits.
Misteriosos Cardigans. Os temas e as letras adaptam se a estados de espirito diferentes. Arte. Cardigans (also and again) at their best. One of the best love albuns of the century
my soul just grew in to a beuatiful red rose and smells like a sour-sweet candy. life approached me again and the taste of my life is sooomuch better now with this song!
MrUnit731 i am relaxed. life is comming through my ears and comming out through my soul as i am speaking with others, embracing them, encouraging them.. spreading the love everywhere, peace to you and your lovely family!
I found the Cardigans in 1996 and sent them a letter in the mail. They sent me a picture of the band with autographs from everyone. I'm sure they did this for anyone who wrote at that time.
+Fiona Murphy isn't it ok for whoever listens to it to form their own opinion? Why does it matter to you what random stranger 200456 cares. I listened to it like 30 times last month and I assumed it couldn't be anything but about something statement about domestic violence, but the song seems much deeper to me when ya, it's about passionate love. So am I wrong or are you just throwing a statement out there without backing it up, or is it ok for people to have their own opinion?
+Fiona Murphy It really doesn't make any sense as a statement about domestic violence, imo. Unless you are referring to how an abused person obviously has a bond with their abuser. But what if it's your Dad, and he's never going to change, but you love him, but that's what love is, and that's what I feel love is about? But shame on anyone who feels it's nothing but a statement about domestic violence.
The structure of this song gives you little by little until it delivers the whole emotional explosion. Pure art.
Yeah, the end is so violent with pure poetry. The words they used to describe the fear of the abuser is fantastic.

Long Gone Before Daylight became my favourite Cardigans album by far ❤️

Of all the beautiful and talented female singers who emerged during the 90s, Nina would probably be close to the top of both lists for me.

This band is way too cool. Nina is perfection.

This song came to me at a desperate time in my life. I was in an abusive realationship. Thanks Nina x

deeply heart felt nostalgia decades pres 2020... times of hope and sweet rapture
I love what she radiates. Such feminine beauty... She's the more than stunning girl I haven't met yet...

+Adriano Silva whats the lead singer full name??
+lorddiosliving Nina perrson. with the double "R".

@@lorddiosliving That's a double S of course. Easy to remember since she is Swedish.
@@Martsapso21 ok.. Cool
One word... wonderfull! Nice picture collection of Nina. And a very good song of The Cardigans.
"Love, you're news to me, you’re a little bit more than I thought you'd be. A mole in my well-fed lawn, you’re a nightmare beating the dawn"... ♥♥♥

Like in lovefool she says I don't care if u really care as long as you don't go. Quite a dark song really.

Very nice song. Nina's voice is so pretty. As are many Swedish girls.
I didn´t know this song. I really like the singer sonority and tenderness, you can really feel the hurt feelings. 5 stars song for me. ;)
Such an underrated song...
she is beauty.
Nina Persson is much more than her looks. Give her some cerebral credit!

I love it! Amazing song! Thanks for sharing.
Man I've had a few
But they wouldn't quit blow me like you
You gave me your name and sight
With a halo around my eye
And it hits me like never before
That love is a powerful force
Yes it struck me that love is as bored
So I pushed you a little bit more
Love, you're news to me
You're a little bit more then I thought you'd be
A mow in my well fed lawn
You're a nightmare beating the dawn
Oh it hits me like never before
That love is a powerful force
Yes it struck me that love is a sport
So I pushed you a little bit more
Blue, blue, black and blue
Red blood sticks like glue
True love is cruel love
Red blood say power fuel
Sweet love tasty blood
My heart overfloods
Oh you hit me
Yeah you hit me really hard
Man you hit me
Yeah you hit me right in the heart
Lord I've had my deal
But I never quite knew how it feels
When love makes you wake up soar
With fists that are ready for more
And it hits me that love is a game
Like in war no one can be blamed
Yes it struck me that love is a sport
So I pushed you a little bit more
Blue, blue, black and blue
Red blood sticks like glue
True love is cruel love
Red blood say power fuel
Sweet love tasty blood
My heart overfloods
Man you hit me
Yeah you hit me really hard
Baby you hit me
Yeah you punched me right in the heart
And then you kissed me
And then you hit me
Oh you hold me with your violent heartbeat at night
Oh you strike me with your silence baby tonight
Why you hold me with your violence baby come hit me
You hold me with your violent heartbeat
Thank you
I adore her voice🙂👌

She is so beauty...nice piano too
This is absolutely beautiful
Has anybody noticed the melodic tribute to "And then I kissed her", by the Beach Boys, in the lines "And then you kissed me/And then you hit me"?
This is such a great song. I love it!

My family's dead. But thanx anyway.
That went dark suddenly :}
It's unmistakably about abuse because Dom Violence Centers use it as their theme song during DV month which is now - October.
Such a pretty song. So relaxing. I just love The Cardigans sooo much. ~~Darcy~~
Great song from a truly great band, and a really good photo montage
Adorabile come sempre baci 😘😘😘

I wish I had found this singer way back in time.
So many Questions in this song.

Beautiful song, voice and beautiful Nina
absolutely beautiful, thank you for video man
What amazing Nina
Incantevole Nina.....
I believe that truly dramatic story of my family explains perfectly the song lyrics...😢
I love this song
Maravillosa canción!!!
Fuck! What a great group! Fantastic in every way.
10/10 - perfect.
Essa música é muito linda e sempre fico calmo e feliz, como se estivesse em paz ao ouvi-la!
Essa música é bem triste e violenta na verdade. Não sei se chegou a ver a letra, é sobre abuso físico no casamento.
Великолепно!
It is a metaphor. They are just identifying passionate love with violence imagery. That makes this song a very powerful one. :)
...this songs going to leave a mark...on me...
the best song =)
Really hope people understand this is about domestic violence not a metaphor for passionate love
+Fiona Murphy you ruined this song for me :/ ...:D

Shallow from “A Star Is Born” borrows the chords and melody from the verses of this song. I just realized it... and I am pretty mad.
