- Here’s a cover of one of my favorite songs by Norman Blake…and of course covered on the legendary Tony Rice album of the same name. Here’s a rough backstage version of “Church Street Blues”.
We are having a blast on this run of shows opening for the incredible Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. As I post this, we are about to go on in Louisville. Hope to see y’all in your town soon! Thanks for watching!
The guitar is a Pre-War Co. 12 fret 28 style (old growth Indian rosewood back and sides). D’Addario Nickel Bronze Strings (medium gauge) and a BlueChip TAD60 pick.
Your Mama can be proud of your talent and your sense of a guitar sound is special
How beautiful!!
the timbre of your voice is what seals this.
It's hard to take a classic and make it your own. This is the real deal.
Alright now Tony Rice pickin with the keith whitley vocals! Love it
you nailed that description to the tee. very well said Sir
Flawless
Beg to differ with the description, brother. That ain't no 'rough backstage version'. You could release that right now, as is! Seriously, best I ever heard, and not trying to commit sacrilege here, but I have heard Norman and Tony. You got a resonance and a reality to your tone, a real force and hard edge to it that's pleasing to the ear. It's genuine, without trying to be. Dang.

Nor did you have to try, but somehow managed to. Kudos!
In essence I agree with your point. However, to play at his level I believe you need to be a perfectionist, which means you notice every little thing that isn't exactly the way you wanted it to sound. Anything less than that is "rough." I've done enough singing to recognize the little glint of annoyance in the eye when a vocal comes out just a little scratchier than you intended because you didn't get two hours to warm up beforehand. Happens to me all the time.
Absolutely.
Wow, what an incredible performance! Your rendition of this beautiful piece is absolutely stunning. The way you made that old guitar sing truly did justice to Tony's masterful style. I was genuinely moved by your playing and singing; it brought out all the emotions that make this song so special. It's clear you have a deep respect and understanding of Tony's music, and your interpretation honors his legacy beautifully. I'm sure Tony is somewhere watching this and cracking that same subtle smile he does in that classic video from "An Intimate Lesson With Tony Rice." Thank you for sharing your talent with us!
I have played with some good flat pickers but this guy .... this guy I'm blown away . Watch your back Billy Strings
There are few who could cover a song Tony Rice recorded and do it justice.
Justice has been served!
Man, I love this song. Thanks, Trey.
Wonderful interpretation of a Norman Blake classic.
Wish tony would have been alive to see this, he'd have been a fan
This is an instant classic performance. You're a blessing Trey.
You knocked it out of the park with this classic!
I urge anyone who hasn't seen Rob and Trey live to do so. You will be blown away.
Great job
Great singing! So often, the vocal is an afterthought behind the guitar. It’s great to hear them so nicely balanced.
The great trey Hensley playing one of the greatest songs
Awesome job. You have a very distinct bluegrass tone in your voice that's perfect for this song. This is one of my favorite Tony Rice songs. He would be very happy to hear you singing and playing.
It’s a Norman Blake song, but I’m sure both Norman and Tony would absolutely love the rendition! 😊
@@jaybowcott6030 Cool! I did not know it was a Norman Blake song. Yeah they would love it for sure.
Just simply beautiful …. incredible your unique marriage of musicality and chops ….

I can only imagine the amount of practice it takes to consistently perform in near perfection. I have seen Trey in person a few times and just sit there in awe of the gift this man has. Thanks for sharing your gift with us Trey!
I've been playing 40 years , I can't play 2 seconds of this.
so precise yet so fluid. Mr. Rice would be proud.
Trey - an absolute pleasure watching you play and listening to you sing. Looking forward to seeing you someday!
And he also has a great voice!
Gotta be so awesome to play this song so clean and sing it to boot!
If Tony Rice Looked Down From Heaven I'm Shure He Would Smile Listening To This Talented Young Man Play This... Amazing Talent Trey Ty Love This!!... Hoping Some Day I Can See You And Billy Strings Perform Together And Give Us A Flatpicking Historical Performance!!!

True master of his craft. Truly fantastic.
the ease, comfort and precision baffle me. You are a rare talent man
Wow! This is incredible! your playing never ceases to amaze me. Every song I hear you perform on RUclips teds to be my favorite version, I could listen to you play all day. I’d love to hear you do a cover of Randall Collins by Norman Blake!
This is incredible. Excellent work, sir.
Brother... Your playing is so sick... and your singing is so good. One wouldn't expect that to be possible.
Tony Rice is really hard to follow with his timing being so strange. You killed it
Well done
one of my favorite tunes by one of my favorite pickers and singers.....you da man Trey!
Dang man! My favorite and you nailed it. The voice and the pickin, love it!
The level of talent is truly staggering.
Awesome as usual. Glad to hear you're having a blast with the shows. I always say if it ain't fun, I'm done. I've made some lifelong friendships because of music with people I would have never met if not for the music. To me, that's the most precious part of music. Thanks for sharing.
Your awesome with that gruitar & great singer !!!!!!❤
Guitar is on point for sure!! Great!
Absolutely fantastic brother!!! Smiles for days!

I have listened to many covers of this great Norman Blake song, and this one is right up there with the best, including the benchmark performance of Tony Rice’s. I love the new touches you add.

That you did, indeed…..👍🏻
Just perfect . I love your style, very impressive . ❤form italy
Love this so much. I told myself that Church Street blues would be my goal this summer. But it’s definitely above my pay grade right now.
Freakin awesome!! 🙌 Holiday greetings from Sweden!
Whoa!
Amazing job. All credit to you for nailing it, Sir 💚
👍Outstanding Trey 👍
For what it's worth...I live in Australia and I am freaking amazed. This is good stuff Trey.
A lot of Blake's in Australia. Both Australia and Georgia ( where our section of Blake's are from) where penal colonies especially for the Irish.
Wow. How it’s done. Beautiful
That was kinda perfect.
Wonderful. Joining those who wish you'd release this!
That's fresh right there.
Talk those NGDB boys into doing a Circle Volume 4. It's time to pass the torch onto a new generation that will keep the collaboration going!
Phenomenal
Awesome job Trey!!! Enjoyed that awesome pickin and vocals!! Thank you for sharing!!
You've become one of the best. I think we played on Ronnie Slagles sing time when you were very young. You've went like a rocket ever since.
BRAVO bravo bravo

Pure gold
really nice....
So cool man !
Awesome cover as always Trey.
Thank you
Onyer Trey, appreciate the tone.
I've played guitar for a while, pro and not. I love your version. Is stays close to the Rice version, which is subdued but beautiful. Church Street is quickly becoming a staple in Bluegrass like Whiskey before Breakfast, etc. Thanks for the rendition!
Damn dude!! great picking!!!! amazing!!! you got skillzzzzzz!!!!! :D:D:D: Love it! :D:D:D -Cholly
Finally found some real music.
Great as always . Wish you had a TicTok account
Great sound you are the best of the best. You should do an instructional video on how to play this tune. I'd love to see it. Stay well & safe my friend.
Great cover!
Nice playing bud 👏
Very nice Trey!
Trey thanks for the "hearted" reply... I've been listening to you since I heard you with Marty Stewart at the Grand Old Opry with Earl Scruggs. I've been pickin' since I was 13 also (back in 1960)... but I chose a different career other than music. I still play at home almost every day. R&B was my music of choice. Here's a version of the blues from my perspective I recorded this in Fort Worth about 15 years ago: ruclips.net/video/p1rIzqCTgXE/видео.html
Killer brother !
I feel like your singing improved. Love this one.
Tony would be proud!
Great to see you carrying the torch of outstanding flatpicking, stellar work!
And thank you for a great show last weekend at the wonderful Fur Peace Ranch!
I’d like to see you record (professionally) some or your most popular or favorite covers from RUclips and make an album out of it
You gotta be joking me!! No one can play like that!
Was this by chance filmed in the plaza theatre Glasgow Ky?
Hey trey would there be any chance of a breakdown style lesson of this? I’d love to know the way you’re picking some parts of it. Sounds incredible!
Get on it son... :-)
I swear that right hand is dead accurate as a computer ... Slicker snot on a silk coat sleeve ...dam son!!
