The Spitfire flew at high altitude especially when they were being given the Russian front but the pilots didn’t have pressure suits or cockpits, or oxygen. He used to play trumpet in the clubs in London until he burst an eardrum flying with a head cold. He never reported it because he didn’t want to be grounded. After the war he test piloted planes left by the Germans and back in North America in the 50s. There’s something about the sound of planes during air shows I find haunting.
