I find this album needs to be listened through - singles take the song out of context. And the more I listen through the entire thing the more I understand the mix. Troy mentioned in one interview that the approach was to completely blend the orchestra, choir, and band so that neither takes precedence. It’s not what we are used to in music production - the vocal and solos are part of the whole, not a “feature”. Tuomas also said that at least one song has 600 tracks to mix, so it’s an audio engineer’s nightmare.
Vocals and music in a video should be shared as they are here. I do agree that when they get back to performing live that Floor’s voice will probably be moved up in the mix. 😄😄
Tuomas has explained that he didn't want the traditional mix with vocals sat on top of everything else but rather mixed as another instrument, within the music as part of the overall ensemble.
So, that you as a listener, can choose if you want to consentrade bass, violin, harp or some other instruments. You can hear all of them as equal. This is symphonic metal after all..
There are many layers to Tuomas' compositions. He has a propensity to subdue musical elements of a song to allow those other elements to be heard. Additionally, Floor's vocals were six weeks post pregnancy. Meaning she sang these songs "cold" without very much prep. Diaphragm still "adjusting" after pregnancy. She would do a song then take a break and feed the baby. If you have time, go see "The Charismatic Voice" interview with Floor. It provides an intimate view of her experience on singing for this album.
this is mixed like a symphony, not like a musical as previous albums. After you get used to it, you are able to zoom in on any of the elements - without the voice burying them. This wall of sound style works better on open back headphones with a less poppy EQ
This song is the journey of your life, where you steer this ship with crowded sails to diffrent Islands, where each island represent a person you meet along, or a happening in your life, there is good islands and the more obscure islands, at the end with the pipe section, you react the final harbour, where you do not need to visit more islands, here you ancor up, the song could be taken diffrenly as the journey of the band as well, or a 3th option, for me its just this travel through life i get, its honestly a masterpiece of a song, proberly the best one from new album, love it!! And honestly the album do grow after several listens from being great, to be a total masterpiece!! And now i listened to the album this many times, i have to say, the mix is perfect!! instead of just getting Floor, you get a wall of sound, that is part of creating this grand journey the album gives you..
Do you always agree with everyone and everything? Isn't sound one of the things people feel differently. If someone wants to hear Floor louder, how is that a bad thing? About half of the songs on this album are songs I will not listen to again. There are few really good ones and few pretty good ones. If something doesn't sound good to me, then I have a right to feel and say that. People just like different things. There are also people who absolutely hates sounds like chewing and whispers. Just like people have different fears. Why should everyone like the same things or be exactly the same?
@@kimmomatikainen1843 I always want to hear Floor louder. Now, if she could just wake me up with one of her highest sustained notes every morning that would be fine and dandy. I'm not going to start an argument on yet another channel. But the mix is perfect if you buy the album and the idea that as many suggest that they and other so called industry experts know better than Nightwish how to record and mix their own music how they want it, is just ridiculous in the extreme. Rant over.
When asked about the mix Tuomas and Troy said that all the elements, voice and guitar solos, are part of the instrumentation and was done specifically this way. he uses Floor's voice as another instrument.
Dude this album grew on me so fast, I've played it in the car every day for the last week and it went from pretty great to my second favorite album of theirs in a few days, I love it so much.
Personally, I feel like Tuomas had a stroke of genius when he decided to not let any of the instruments, Floor's voice included, overpower the other ones. It makes it a pleasant listening experience, and makes it feel like the different sounds are cooperating, and trying to achieve the same goal, rather than fighting to be the loudest. By the way, moths usually have their wings swept back, in a horizontal position, while butterflies often hold their wings together, in a vertical position, they can, however, lower them to a horizontal position. Try to imagine Amadeus Mozart had the orchestra and choir, and a synthesizer, a drummer like Kai, a bass player like Yukka, a guitarist like Emppu, a singer like Floor, what would his music sound like? Check out the whole album, listening to the songs one by one. It's like an epic journey. When they ever play live again, it will be different. Most reactors who discovered Nightwish started with the live performances. And the Nightwish Army have been warning they are live better than in the studio. Remember this. The army knows.
Regarding the mix, I saw an interview with Troy who explained their choice. The reason for it was that they wanted all elements of the songs to be heard. They wanted us to hear the intricate details of the instrumentation. I think they succeded with this but I respect anyones opinion who says otherwise.
Enjoyed the reaction! Regarding the mix I heard another reactor, big Nightwish fan, who was very negative about the mix in Perfume of the Timeless. After listening to the whole album he realized 3 to 4 songs in what the band was going for and completely took back all his negative comments. He got that Tuomas was going for the wall of sound effect ala Devin Townsend and Strapping Young Lads and the mix was great. I think the volume is fine but with that wall of sound approach you get more going on in the frequencies were Floor's voice is and so you have to work harder and focus to hear her. My first listen to this song, my brain just couldn't organize and understand everything going on. As I listened more times my brain recognized parts of the song and so It could then focus in on other parts. After about 3 or 4 listens everything sounds perfect and I hear everything without having to work at it. Thematically this song is about our journey through life. Classic Tuomas to use the ocean as a metaphor for our life's journey. Tuomas gave a little insight in an interview where he said "The song actually has a triple meaning. I took a big A4 sheet of paper and made a drawing on it. Throughout the time I was composing “An Ocean Of Strange Islands”, that drawing remained on my music stand. I won’t reveal what was in that drawing, though." Tuomas and his wife, Johanna Kurkela, have a tradition on New Years where they draw a map where each Island represents a goal or a dream that they wish to achieve. I also struggled with the meaning of the lyrics initially and was checking out a Nightwish Reddit page to see what others thought. I really liked Apple60's interpretation which gives us another meaning, this is Tuomas's journey with Nightwish! "A mariner (Tuomas) sets sail towards islands (=goals and dreams), with a few decades of immortality ahead (28 years of NW). Monsters and hurricanes complicate this journey, causing a shipwreck for a pair of lovers along the way (Tarja/Marcelo reference?).. He meets jokers, jesters, and goddesses (new band members). He begs for help navigating the waters. He then sails upon an island of the past wrecks, which is full of dangers (poisonous hemlock meadows, deepest quicksand). This island represents past mistakes. He is reminded of someone who used to be a friend but the friendship has now soured. Still, after all of this he doesn't regret visiting any of the islands (Still, I rue no island). I think the you referenced in the song actually stands for Nightwish. -An island of the past wrecks, of you, of the endless sundown (sundown=night). -You who glow, in deepest woe (Reminds me of the line All of my songs can only be composed of the greatest of pains). Let it be, retiree, the water's fine, sail carefree = After visiting the islands (living through the experiences of NW), Tuomas finally comes to the conclusion of "don't worry, continue the journey". This could be a message for himself, or possibly for Marko". I personally think the Monsters and Hurricanes aren't specifically about Tarja but is a literary allusion to all who have been obstacles or tried to impede the progress of the band and their art. In the end we all get to find our own meaning as Tuomas has always desired of his fans!
Still don't know the difference between moths & butterflies after all your years on our beautiful planet - that's sad to see - spend a few moments to enjoy the world around you - it's free and wonderful.
This track is so Nightwish! It has it all. The heavy, the symphonic, the Celtic. I F-ing love the drums in this one. Kai is a beast. If you listen to the album as a whole, you'll notice not being bothered about Floor being low in the mix anymore. Tuomas did it on purpose. She is an instrument, as you've probably read in the comments already. And then... Yep. The gorgeous tones of Troy with the pipes. Makes me just wanna close my eyes and drift away.
This album is growing on me. I think its really intersting album, and yes that they wanted Floor to be treated like a instrument, instaed of beeing above the intrsuments is something that takes time to get used to.
I wonder if some (but some was a creative decision) of the mixing differences from other albums has to do with the fact that everything else was recorded in a different studio, and Floor’s vocals were recorded at her home studio because she had just given birth and couldn’t travel. I just watched an interview with her and she recorded the vocals just 6 weeks postpartum and she still couldn’t even stand without pain. In another interview, Tuomos said they had planned 2 weeks for recording vocals and she knocked it out in 6 days. She’s a real life Wonder Woman.
I have downloaded the new album on my iphone via Itunes. The quality is much better than here on RUclips! You can hear Floor crystal clear and the song has more dynamic.
Ah, yet another rant from a music professional(?) on why the mix should have been done differently. Nope, the mix is as intended as already explained by Tuomas, Troy and Floor. This is not a live concert of the Floor Jansen band with some background musicians and where the singer stands at the front of the band. This is music as a whole with the singer(s) IN it. Nightwish has been making music for (almost) 30 years next year, so I think they know by now what they want and how they want it.
I'm a musician and don't there anything "wrong" with the final product, but I will say that it hits differently with Floors vocals further down in the mix. After a few listens, you get used to it and it all kinda starts to come together. I don't think he's being "stupid", as you say. I had some indifference to it when I first heard it. I thought the guitar sounded a bit muddied, but after a few listens, it all starts to click. A lot of it could depend on what you're playing it through. I heard somewhere that it was geared towards Dolby Atmos, so that could be an explanation. So give the guy a break. We all hear and interpret sound differently. Rock on.
There is an interview with Troy on YT done by A&P where he explains the deliberate choice of this production. And no, it's not YT nor your headphone...😂
I understand why Thuomas decided to mix the album this way. It's his vision i get it. But hey my opinion (and many others) is that we would like Floor and yes that guitar solo to be turned up! It's an amazing album but everyone can think what they want. Even super highly respected reactors like Elizabeth (charasmatic voice) said the same thing. Better go rip into her now peeps 😅
Been a huge Nightwish fan since Century Child 2004 but i havent connected with the last 2 albums. Dont get me wrong i love NW and those last 2 albums still have some killer songs. But i miss the older ones.
You’re right about the mix. Most people recognize it sucks. That is, except the zombie fans that will say everything Nightwish produces is awesome. They think the whole world needs new headphones or has hearing issues 😂😂😂 I hope Tuomas hears so much negative feedback about it that he decides to never insist on this again.
Many people who heard the album from start to finish, do not agree with you, also masny that didnt like the mix at first like it much better after listen to album as a piece, did you listen to whole album from start to finnish? or are you talking from hearing 2 or 3 songs..
@@renejensen7799 That is a property of the brain called habituation. It does not change the fact, just perception. You shouldn’t have to “get used to“ the bad mix and try to hear through a “wall of sound” while reading lyrics and following along with a CD/album insert to “get it.” Virtually no one listens to music like that. No one should start to have to listen to music like that.
Just accept the songs the way they were produced, give them a few listens and they get better and better!
Absolutely, and you don't even think about it anymore - this isn't pop music where the vocals are everything, this is deep music.

Rock on.
Even if the mix it's done as intended, that doesn't mean you have to like it. Art is subjective. Let people have it's own opinion
Thanks ❤❤❤
🤘🖤🔥
There is an interview with Troy on YT done by A&P where he explains the deliberate choice of this production. And no, it's not YT nor your headphone...😂
My download from itunes sounds better and clearer than the YT stuff here.
But i miss the older ones.
this would be the best showopener they ever had
but for what shows? 😭
OMG,
The
Mix is so good. Buy new headpjones. Only my tip
You’re right about the mix. Most people recognize it sucks. That is, except the zombie fans that will say everything Nightwish produces is awesome.
They think the whole world needs new headphones or has hearing issues 😂😂😂
I hope Tuomas hears so much negative feedback about it that he decides to never insist on this again.
Most people? Really?
Many people who heard the album from start to finish, do not agree with you, also masny that didnt like the mix at first like it much better after listen to album as a piece, did you listen to whole album from start to finnish? or are you talking from hearing 2 or 3 songs..
@@renejensen7799 That is a property of the brain called habituation. It does not change the fact, just perception. You shouldn’t have to “get used to“ the bad mix and try to hear through a “wall of sound” while reading lyrics and following along with a CD/album insert to “get it.”
Virtually no one listens to music like that. No one should start to have to listen to music like that.
@@TumppiJarnefelt Yes. Watch more reaction videos. Virtually everyone says they can’t hear lyrics or Floor and therefore only some melody.
@@ascensionenergetics85 i’ve watched many. And yes, some will rant about the mix. But most love these new songs. So go figure…
Dozens of listens for me. Still irritated by Floor's suppressed vocals. I found boosted versions. SO much better. ••• PEACES!!!
