#videolighting
Looks nice - thanks for covering. Not the type of modifier you see a whole lot for video work.
Dude this video needs more views. Thanks so much for this. Love that you have strayed away from following the trend of just slapping a light dome over your 120D. This is so genius. Buying now! Thanks Spenser.
There are shorter reflectors like the godox rft 17 for umbrellas 110deg spread .
Do you use mist filter
Bcz it looks smooth like a film
No promist on this video this time.
Damn, that is a great lighting setup. The fall off is great. Now I'm interested in trying this out. 7' will not fit with my current setup though haha.
It's really interesting how the worlds of motion and still photography have evolved somewhat separately from each other, like two strains of the same species on different islands. Obviously each profession has it's own needs/constraints/budgets, but when you get down to it, light works the same way whether it's continuous or strobe.
damn that umbrella is sick i should buy one
psyche i already have it
C stands are a MUST have! Do not put the COB lights on a cheap light stand. C stands are expensive, so go for the Neewer on Amazon.
Umbrellas are severely underrated! I use a bunch of different sizes when doing stills, but works wonders in videos as well. The biggest con is the spillage that you really can’t control other than feathering the light as you did in the video.
I don't think you need the diffusion when using a white umbrella, as your light is already covering most of the inside area and won't change the light source image that much, other than hiding the ribs and stretchers. A diffusion for a silver umbrella on the hand makes more sense.
Diffusion on the front of the umbrella would help with the spill a bit too, yeah?
Loud&Clear not really, all the diffusion does is reducing the output and spread out the light. But since a white umbrella, like the one Spencer is using in this video, already is a superwide, you are not really benefiting that much from having on the umbrella. If it was a silver umbrella then you’d need a diffusion to avoid any harsh shadows. However, if you put a sheet/roll/curtain of diffusion closer to the subject and further away from the light source, you will have a different effect. The only way to control spill from an umbrella is to either get a deep one or close of the sides with whatever you have around.
Great video! Definitely a great way to modify light. The optional diffusion fabric would help with spill. I wish they sold a grid to control the light even further!
I'm very likely going to get one of these 7' umbrellas, but... one issue is spill on the background. A softbox, particularly with a grid, makes it easier to put a big, soft light on the subject, then flag it off from the background and then control the light on the background separately. But in a lot of cases, that isn't really an issue as long as you're getting decent separation between the subject and the background.
hm... the amount of flagging you would have to do to shape that umbrella would probably take more time than setting up an embrella type softbox and velcro in a grid......
Wow, could you explain more about it? Or maybe a video, this sounds like a nice hack. Please, and thanks
My man, you’d really get a kick out of frames and fabrics. Make yourself a 4x4 (or 6x6.. 8x8? 12x12! Pick your poison) and get silks, muslins, duvetyne (or bedsheets), use for bounce or to punch light through, neg fills etc. Work great with single source lights like the 120s, 300s, etc
That's an interesting alternative I was not expecting. Umbrellas are for sure super portable too.
hey Spencer, quick question, if i use amaran 200d + umbrella , will it be same vibe as yours 120dii+ umbrella ?
Grip arm is called a lollipop on set. Short C-stand is called a Gary Coleman.
Quick question regarding the umbrella. I’ll be traveling over seas to film a documentary, would this umbrella set up be good on a key light for filming interviews / talking head scenarios? Or would a light dome / octabox with grid be more appropriate for that?
This looks like a great light for fashion/commercial work, not so much for narrative. The light/shadow falloff is very stylized and unnatural.
Maybe a layer of diffusion could solve this.
This is the biggest quick set up softbox I've been able to find and it comes with a grid. Check it out: www.cheetahstand.com/product-p/qrb-48.htm It works well.
did you grade this, or was this straight out of camera fuji (eterna?) colours. looks good, thinking about grabbing an xt3 secondhand
Which lens did you shoot this video with? In particular the talking head shots.
would this be a good alternative to a softbox lantern? looking at getting something that i can fly over head for a two person interview. any thoughts?
I love these videos, Spenser. Totally inspirational. I'd be interested how this would look paired with a 1/8 or 1/4 pro mist filter.
Is your camera daylight balanced here ?
Great setup man! There are softboxes that are designed to be opened like an umbrella which are sooooo much better to work with and take 10 secs to setup on the light. LuxLight sells them for example. Pretty good quality for the price!
Paul C Buff make some as well that are intended for thier photography strobes but are great. Just change the speedring out to one that fits your mount (i switch to bowens mount for when working whit aputure lights). The things are great build quality as i jsut throw mine in the car/on the gear cart and they have held up to abuse for years.
Not square space!!!!
Im embarrassed to have let the last few seconds play out, thinking there might be a post-credit scene 😆🙈
Having c stands and combo stands has been so helpful. Glad you got hooked up
I love using an 61' umbrella with the diffuser for my photography work, recently starting using it more often over my octabox. When I'm able to get a more capable video single chip light, I most definitely will start using it for that too. Great video!
I wanted to add, that on this video I noticed that there was a possible dead pixel in the video at around the 3:30 mark when you face is in the shadow, from what i think is the X-T3. Quite possibly could be the sensor. Thought it was my TV, but noticed it on a couple of other screens. Just wanted to give you a heads up.
Yup, I see it aswell. Some cameras can fix that by using the internal ”cleaning mode” to re-map, or whatever it is called, but I have no idea if the xt-3 has that function.
No rgb tubes anymore? ;)
Good stuff! Very cool nice source
Awesome video as always !! :D I’ve been using the Godox SL60W, but really want the Aputure 120D so I can do more location work - the godox is limited to mains power only.
I’m using an octa softbox (i think abut 80-90cm) with diffuser and a grid atm... but this looks like an awesome setup! :D
Try the godox v150 same design but has a vmount battery plug and is cheaper than the 120d
Bongo Sapien I’ll check it out - it’s been on my radar for a bit too :)
It looks really nice, if I have an umbrella made for difusion instead of bounced, should I expect a similar result?
I suppose but I prefer the bounce. You lose less intensity.
That's seven years bad luck. Har! Looks great. But your videos always look great
What camera are you using for this video? Sorry if you've answered this before, new to the channel 😀
NICE!
Looks great
Cheers for the video - was just thinking about the most practical way to get a big source out of a 120d outside of just using a softbox! I'd be curious to see a test where you do end up putting your 1/4 grid up to test out that book light setup you're mentioning!
Any words on the new 12K camera from blackmagic!!!??? I got a 3.5 foot umbrella and its amazing and cheap!
Hey Spenser. Go on Amazon and get the Laofas softbox. The rods are built in and are adjustable to make for easy setup and breakdown. Im talking less than one minute. I love them so much, lol.
The soft light looked really nice, and worked very well with your rec. 709 type grade you had going on. I'd say the biggest problem with the catch light wasn't just the size, but you could actually see the silhouette of the stand in your eyes. Sort of a shame since the light is so clean. But it would be interesting to see how people solve that problem.
I bought one based on this video and it comically large. It does create an incredible soft source so I’m going to just roll with it, tiny apartment and all!
OMG that umbrella is awesome. Decent bounce and you're done. Nice.
I startted lighting things exactly liike this the last couple months. Felt like i was being super amateur but i always like dhow it looked and the set up was super easy. thanks. i love using umbrellas. got all the different styles
I just got the same umbrella but with the silver reflector and diffusion. Haven't tested yet but hoping to get similar results
Just ordered a 72" reflective umbrella should be here soon, love big soft light and finding using bounce boards and v flat great but really interested in how simple this seems, I'm all about simple, my IQ agrees with me
Funny. I used that setup when I started filming years back b/c I did photography first. I like umbrellas better than softboxes. Also used the 120D. Very nice soft light.
Hi. Are you doing another test with the Sigma fp (with the firmware update)? Cheers. (PS I think the shot of the macaroons are the some of the best colours I've ever seen)
Yes! I’m testing it this week
@@spensersakurai please see the Raw video test I did on my channel. Just having some fun.
I’ve used large umbrellas quite a bit in the past. Also with photofloods for tungsten light bulbs.
Just bought some 7ft umbrellas for fast paced shoots where we'd be lugging softboxes around from location to location, they work a treat. Also, the transparent .5 stop para's make for good quick single person outdoor diffusion in a pinch
This is smart. Did you have any problems with audio from the light being picked up in your microphone?
I've always wondered why filmmakers never use umbrellas. I'm glad i watched this! Cheers Spenser :)
Adorama Glo EZ series...they GRRRREAT!
I really like the quality of the light and the ability to angle it. But is there an advantage of using this instead of just bouncing from a reflector? Is the light spread more narrow due to the curvature? I would really like to use this but I also exclusively use Arri tungsten lights which get really hot.
Love the big umbrella, that quality of falloff is lovely and the catchlight looks nice. I'd definitely snag that diffusion, have a book light quality on a single stand is super handy.
My only qualm is the directionality/shapeability as compared to a softbox with eggcrates. I have a video on my channel about the GLOW softboxes that pop open like an umbrella, and I never have to take the diffusion off. I agree that the old rod-receiver style softboxes can be a pain to setup, which is why I switched over to all Glow boxes for my Aputure lights.
Everything is a tool, and this huge umbrella would also be great to provide directional ambience in a wide shot on a single light stand.
Love your channel, thanks so much for all you share.
Just when I think My lighting gear collection is complete. Great video
Rolling C-stands are the best!!!! Great video as always!
But what about the lack of honeycomb? Now way to control the spill?
I totally just bought the umbrella. Can't wait to use it! I don't know why I hadn't though about getting one before now. Thank you!
Well for the shower curtain setup I’ve actually just used one stand and mount a super clamp to the light sand and have the shower curtain rod attached to that, then just hang the shower curtain on it with clamps attached.
My office isn't even 7 feet wide lol! That looks absolutely great though, definitely gonna keep this in mind. When I got my first softbox I thought "wow, I've finally got a soft light source", but the more I use it, the more I notice how harsh it actually is when it's not right in my face. Loving all these options that are out there!
something looks different with the vlog cam setup, it has a lot of detail but the colors look way off, skin not looking nice
Is that umbrella pointed straight across his face in front of him?
Ya, for $60 that is one heck of a tool. I will get one now! Thanks.
Once you have a room with white walls the spill is gonna be a big issue.
Did you get rid of the pocket 4k? I just ordered one
that looks glorious.
wouldve liked to see a comparison vs the regular light dome setup tho
My room isn't large enough
Congrats on the C-stand! I need one too haha
But how to control it??
Great video as always!
Tasty!
great set up
Last time I was this early it was still 2019
