    Pranayama (breathing exercises) are excellent. The Kumbhaka or "breath holds" are very good. However, the longer breath holds are not safe for people with respiratory conditions and, generally, are really for people in the shape of professional athletes.
    Some of traditional Hatha Yoga is also really meant for people in very very ideal shape.
    There are movements within Hatha Yoga...of "Gentle Yoga" and Yoga at the office desk called "Chair Yoga."
    When people start out, it is really best to go with a very easy, gentle form. It is not supposed to be like Western exercise, done with will and power. It is supposed to be gentle and peaceful, in harmony with the body.
    here are some breathing exercises from the Hindu Yogi Sri Chinmoy:
    Excerpt:
    2. Becoming aware of the breath
    When you sit down to meditate, try to breathe in as slowly and quietly as possible, so that if somebody placed a tiny thread in front of your nose it would not move at all. And when you breathe out, try to breathe out even more slowly than you breathed in. If possible, leave a short pause between the end of your exhalation and the beginning of your inhalation. If you can, hold your breath for a few seconds. But if that is difficult, do not do it. Never do anything that will make you physically uncomfortable during meditation.
    3 Breathing in peace and joy
    The first thing that you have to think of when practising breathing techniques is purity. When you breathe in, if you can feel that the breath is coming directly from God, from Purity itself, then your breath can easily be purified. Then, each time you breathe in, try to feel that you are bringing infinite peace into your body. The opposite of peace is restlessness. When you breathe out, try to feel that you are expelling the restlessness within you and also the restlessness that you see all around you. When you breathe this way, you will find restlessness leaving you. After practising this a few times, please try to feel that you are breathing in power from the universe, and when you exhale, feel that all your fear is coming out of your body. After doing this a few times, try to feel that you are breathing in infinite joy and breathing out sorrow, suffering and melancholy.

    (In 2007, Sri Chinmoy was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by Archbishop Desmond Tutu and former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. Sri Chinmoy conducted meditations at the United Nations for about 30 years and at the US Congress for about 20 years.)

    Do you breathe in and out through the nose or in through the nose and out through the mouth? Thank you

    • @questioneverything7011

      You can do variations. In and out the nose. In and out the mouth. In through the nose out there the mouth... double breath (in belly then in chest) etc

    What do you mean by soft belly? Like try not to use your belly when you breathe?

    • @BeatriceRingFanPage
      @BeatriceRingFanPage 3 года назад +1

      Push your belly out when you breath in. This relaxes the diagram and massages the organs inside. You want to activate your parasympathetic system which reverses cortisol production -stress hormones. It feels odd in the beginning to push the belly out when inhaling. Look at your belly go out, then you are doing it right.
