  • A little review of Helluva Boss, and things sure do happen in it. I thought this would be a quick video that I could get done in a few days, but nope. That didn’t happen, so here’s an hour and a half long video reviewing every episode of Helluva Boss (up to the current episode Season 2 Episode 4). Everything in this video is my opinion, if you disagree, that’s fine. If you notice any mistakes or shit takes I made please go ahead and point them out in the comments.

So the infamous Episode 8 is about to be released tomorrow, and we have some teasers for Season 2 Episode 5. I will talk about them, but I think I’ll wait until there are enough new episodes to do another video like this one instead of making a bunch of 5-10 minute videos.

And apparently Vivzie has this to say about infamous s1e8…
“Just a reminder 8 is very much spectacle.✨It was meant to be a big visual BANG with a simple story as a direct follow up to another episode. I REALLY hope everyone likes it but at this point that really is what it is. Be mindful of expectations, please❤️”
But why label it “Part 2 of the Finale” at first if it’s not going to follow-up on the conflict of interests between Stolas and Blitzo? It actually makes Stolas and Blitzo flirting in s2 e2 even more jarring to watch.

The writers seem to be dead set on NOT developing the female characters. We could have had long conversations between Millie and Loona but we don't. We could have had conversations between Stella and Octavia but we don't. And we could have had Millie interact with Stolas for the first time in the last episode but nope. Why have Stolas talk to anyone else in IMP but Blizto? We can't have that!! That would be too interesting.

The whole "Actually Stolis is a good father and Stella is evil!!" retcon, is really the only truly disgusting thing in this show. The writers, no matter how many fans delude themselves into thinking so, are not good at complex character relationships. I'm pretty sure that Viv just got attached to Stolis and rather than having him be in the wrong for cheating, she just made Stella an irredeemable villain. So that way it's okay that he cheated! And it's okay that he acted selfishly, oh and Octavia just forgives him because all those years of trauma disappeared when her Dad says "Uuhhhhh Idk lol" after she breaks down and admits he really hurt her. Sure, that's not insulting at all! Yup, that's definitely a mature betrayal of a broken household.
Also, Stolis keeps cheating, right after he "apologized" he keeps on cheating, and later we see he's more upset about Blitz not calling him back THAN HIS BROKEN HOUSEHOLD. He's selfish and has always been selfish. To act like Stella is solely in the wrong by retconing her into the Final Boss of abusers and never developing the mother daughter relationship is just childish. And we get absolutely ZERO hints that Octavia is projecting onto one parent, because up to the Loo Loo land episode, Stolis is only one who's done anything. We have no reason to think she has a motive to blame Stella for anything, because we never see the mother daughter relationship.
And don't even get me started on how this show has so many plot holes in it you'd think the writers had short-term memory loss. And that's before we get to the middle school humor and tonal whiplash. All in all, this show calls itself mature, but it's not, and honestly, that's really disappointing.

(Some particular fans like those who like to delete their comments after they’ve posted them about how to excuse Stolas’ actions, really like to use sexuality as the excuse to brush away any accountability on Stolas’ part. I find that absolutely shameful to stigmatise that just because the character is LGBTQ+ means they’re allowed to cheat.)
Gay or not, cheating remains universally inexcusable. That’s one of the facts that makes Stolas unlikeable.
The other is that he’s in reality a neglectful parent, and a neglectful parent is no better than a screaming parent. He isn’t a good father, so actually Stolas has no redeeming qualities.
He’s basically Velma but an original character by which you’re suppose to side with them despite all the horrible things they’ve been doing thus far.
With original character being his ONLY saving grace.

haha, it’s really matter of facts for me.
Of course I may be guilty of projecting but, ironically or unironically, my parents’ dynamic are pretty much an irl Stella and Stolas minus the cheating issue and they have 3 kids. They are loyal to one another, but they are honestly no different from Stolas and Stella in season 1. The weirdest part is the fact that they have told many stories about them being genuinely in love, but the behaviour they’ve shown over the years says otherwise.
Surprisingly they’ve come to the conclusion that they’ll never divorce, even if they argue until the house is filled with only their screaming.
So technically, I happen to know firsthand what Stolas is doing as a father who actually had to learn what empathy is only at a late stage or merely as a social tactic, instead of actually having genuine empathy.

Striker was cool till they ruined him, because his attitude and motives are understandable and relatable, while still being evil. So he was actually kind of well written. To be honest it's ironic we're supposed to see him as a villain considering he's not viciously maiming and murdering defenceless humans, and ruining the families of random mortals. Unlike """heroes""" of this show.
The only reason I care he's going after Stolas is because it would effect Octavia. Other than that he's really not any worse than everyone else.

Okay there’s this THING that happens when something in your story doesn’t make sense; you can either go back and rewrite the entire episode so that one plot hole is fixed, or you can throw in a dumb explanation so people at least think it was intentional.
I don’t care about plot holes that much. Unless they make the story and characters worse it doesn’t matter. But Helluva Boss continuously has moments like this and it’s annoying that when people point them out, someone goes “while obviously they intended for (insert incredibly awkward explanation that no one would assume upon first viewing” so it’s not actually a plot hole”.
It’s okay that there’s a plot hole and that it’s not explained. Yeah ideally it would have an explanation, but plot holes don’t make a show bad. Defending them is a waste of time.

Some of the characterisation is really good. I like how it shows that Blizto feels alone and unlovable by having his face crossed out and crying after looking at all those pictures. I like that it shows Loona's inability to make friends when she's talking to Tex (which is retconned when she has a flawless conversation with Via) and I like how Stolas is set up in episodes 1 and 2.
But then... nothing interesting is done with any of this. Okay, so Blizto feels alone. So why did we have an episode dedicated to a flashback when we should have had a conversation about that? So Loona doesn't have friends and lacks social skills why don't we have more time with her and Tex instead of devoting an episode to the useless CHERUBS.
The story doesn't feel like it's progressing at all and the characters don't do anything new. There's moments of development and information thrown at you piece by piece but it doesn't lead to anything.

I would have liked it if Stella did love Stolas and was actually heartbroken when he cheated on her, especially with someone on a way lower rank than her. I would have liked it if she felt like she was not enough for him (but still had like a rasist bias against imp's) and basically say kinda rude offensive things about imps, like for example *Stella can try and do something to get Stolas attention but when he ignores her, she says something like "idk why with someone as awesome as me, you would rather be with an f**#ing** imp" or something like that* and something like that can happen and then Stolas who doesn't want to upset hus wife will just try to ignore her, but will finally just explain he doesn't like her. It would make more sense for Octavia to be mad at him bc they were "happy" but at the same time, stolas can't control the fact he doesn't like her, so he's still not technically that bad, if they still wanted to make him simpathetic.

Honestly, i think the shot plot might have been better if Blitz set Loona up with Moxxie and the side plot was just Moxxie biting his tongue through all the bullshit until he eventually stands up to Loona and gets her cured. Meanwhile Millie and Blitz try to rescue Stolas allowing for us to see more of their dynamic and put the focus on Millie in the Striker fight while Blitz tries to help Stolas.
Also, Stella recalling the assassination attempt was a terrible move. It actively cheapened the stakes.
I didnt like Striker in S2 E4, largely because he lacked the charisma and intimidation he previously had. Let him triumph in his theme song, actually enjoy seeing Stolas attempt to resist him, and lessen his comedic elements.
Oddly enough I didn't have much a problem with him in S1 E5 because having a good set up and room to kill Stolas by working for Millie's parents does kind of make sense. Though again I'd prefer if the focus was on her being jealous of the attention Striker gets too. Like she wishes she got as much praise as him and believes deep down she could defeat him if she could only compete. Maybe entering Moxxie into the competition to try and live vicariously through him but realosing her mistake when he gets hurt, taking him to the basement to her house to get bandages anf in the process getting knocked out. Then Moxxie is the one stuck injured in the basement, allowing for her to scare Striker off with Blitz. That would be a character moment!
I'm thinking of doing a concept rewrite of the series lol.

It's not a perfect show, and I absolutely feel like it has a MASSIVE tonal issue and can't really pick between being serious or goofy. However, some of the things you said I disagree with from what I've seen in the show.
    * Moxie doesn't really have a problem killing people, he has issues with taking out children and, specifically, families. The new season has an episode that shows he clearly has a broken family with a dead mother, and having targets that touch on that trauma for him is something that he can't handle. I like that personally! It's pretty cool to see a more complex idea of an assassin having moral lines they don't wish to cross when it comes to who they kill. The family being truly depraved and horrible made Moxie realize that he has to leave his morals at the door sometimes since that's what his job demands of him.
    * Stolas I don't feel was retconned to being a good dad with a shitty marriage and it justifies him cheating on his wife. He was always a good dad, and he was always a shitty husband. It's shown over and over that his cheating ruined his daughter's trust in him, made a massive scandal for his standing in hell, and embarrassed not just him but his family as a whole. Stella being outright awful I think lines up with that, because she's always been terrible and she's far more static and that can make more dynamic characters bounce off her more.
    * The episode involving Millie's parents didn't have Moxie come to the conclusion that "Millie is strong enough for both of us," it was about him standing up for himself and voicing his opinion to the in-laws. He tried all the time to get on their good side and win their favor, and that episode allowed him to finally make peace with the fact he's just different than what they want and he's okay with that.
    * I do like that Millie has the strength and vicious nature of a wild boar, but she has like 1 HP and that makes her the strongest but also the most fragile. It makes her focus more on brute force and being agile. I think that's cool! It makes her more of a foil to Moxie, who's weaker but can take more hits and thinks his actions through more. Together, they're practically unstoppable in most situations.
    * It makes sense striker would work on the farm while being a mercenary, it's a very good cover and something he's been doing for a while to solidify an alibi.
Like I said, I feel like the writing could absolutely be better and the tone of the show keeps flopping back and forth which ruins the more dramatic scenes and makes the scenes that are supposed to be funny fall flat most of the time. It's got that Steven Universe issue: it can't tell what it wants the show to be and has a focus problem. Not to mention it relies too much on sex and curse words to be considered 'adult humor', which I find kind of lazy. But a lot of the stuff I like is that the characters are pretty solid and the plot they're trying to develop is really interesting. I loved most of the episodes, I adored the cherub episode so much too! It made us see that the angels might have an equally shitty life compared to the demons. I just wish it made a decision on what it wanted to focus more on, plot/character driven, or jokes/adult humor.

One thing to note about Ozzie's; it's actually NOT the finale. S1E8 is the TRUE finale, but because of COVID happening, they were unable to get it done. So, they decided to release season 2 in the meantime, saying that the actual finale wouldn't be TOO big of a miss when it came to the story of the next season. Sooo whatever happens in that episode might not be TOO major, but at the same time, there's still something that we need to see there. Clarification on how Blitz and Stolas moved on from what happened at Ozzie's, for one 'XD
Also, Blitz and Loona's relationship is really difficult to describe... Because, well, it's actually painfully realistic ';/
Blitz has had his dad sell him out for the price of a used condom, which implies in the future that Blitz REFUSES to become like his dad. Except, he goes into the other extreme; to go from reckless abandonment and exploitation, to unconditional love and blindsiding ANYTHING negative. He puts Loona on a pedestal, while Loona is like a caged animal. S2E2 shows that Loona had been fighting for survival all this time because nobody understood her. At age 17, several days before she would be euthanized, someone adopts her who puts her on a pedestal, but fails to understand her as well. If there's anything a child needs from parents, ESPECIALLY adoptive parents, it's balance. And Blitz's nonstop praise of her means absolutely nothing in the end, when it's not counterbalanced by stimulating proper values through discipline and teaching. The moment he TRIES that, Loona lashes out ferociously, because while she hates the "normal" situation that Blitz established with nonstop praise, the moment it CHANGES and Blitz starts criticizing, she goes into feral mode, because that creeping fear of being euthanized one day comes back. It's no wonder that Loona is still physically abusive towards Blitz, in spite of what she's trying to tell herself. Both Blitz and Loona struggle accepting that people can love them for who they are. While Blitz sees this with Loona and tries to show her that he loves her unconditionally, Loona is too young and too damaged to express herself healthily and fails to take Blitz's love for her seriously. Yeah, she can tell Octavia that dads aren't all that bad sometimes, but preaching about something is easier than accepting it in your own situation. It's hypocrisy, yeah, but it also shows that Loona is FAR from done growing. She needs some THERAPY, bro. All of these characters do... But hey, it's Hell, nobody cares about a healthy mental mindset 'XD Well, aside from Charlie, but, you know... can't have them crossover aside from Easter eggs and references... -3-'

On Moxxie and Killing: This is a latecomer reveal. He's not morally opposed to killing. He's sensitive but a professional. His objection is to specifically killing families. He even said so. Because his mob boss father killed his mother.
On Stolas: He never had a good marriage. It was arranged and Stella always hated him. This isn't something you just infodump. People have to accept that there are things they aren't entitled to know right off. It's not like Darth Vader could just say "Luke and Leia, I'm your father and you're siblings."
On Striker: This was pretty clear. Stolas has a schedule, he said he needed the book for specific times. Striker embedded himself into the farm so it would look natural that he was there. He makes extra money and has his place set up.
And, their variable power level is just an action trope. John Wick gets ambushed, hurt, overcome, and more several times. He's a professional and the best but the movies have to be a certain amount of time.

and once again with the loona barely having a character. she hasn't had any lines these last 2 episodes and there's not much signing to her having much to to in the next 2 episodes as episode 5 will be about blitzo's sister and episode 6 will most like be about fiz and asdmodius (not sure if i spelled that right) and will probably not even show imp besides maybe a couple of lines from the imp gang.
the thing with blizto and stolas acting oddly normal around each other leaves me a bit confused on what to think atm. yes, there's an episode missing in season 1, but from the previews we've seen from that episode it doesn't seem like they'll interact at all. in fact it seems like it's gonna be a loona and blitzo episode, which is also a first.
the problem i have with moxie is that he feel more like the protaganist than blitzo. it's almost like moxie has more screen time and i find it odd. other than that i don't really have much else to say besides that moxie is the typical underestimated weak guy, and that role is just way to over used.
and then there's millie, millie is...really just there. the crew has mentioned that there will be a millie episode soon but it's still weird that we had to wait 1,5 seasons for it to happen. and the second half of season 2 will most likely have a "mid season break" that a lot of tv shows have. this means that the millie episode might be more than 8 months away, if it were to be the 7th episode ofcourse. and sure we don't need every character to have trauma or family issues or both, but the lack of character is very noticable. i actually find millie to be a breath of fresh air compared to all the dramatic backstories, but we don't know anything about her. we know she's married to moxie and that she's a "good" fighter (all tho that's not really shown besides in exes and oohs). it's clear that from the imp gang it loona who's more the background character, but so far we know more about loona than millie even tho millie has more line and more screen time and loona. i really hope this will get touched on in the next episodes.

i think the reason Stella is yelling like that in S1E2c is cause she just wants to make him feel guilty and horrible. As shown in the finally of S1 where she literally says such lol, not cause the writers forgot the timeline. Also i think Blitz and Stolas not addressing the ozzies events in person makes sense for the characters. They are both very much avoiding talking about feelings like normal (obviously we see that stolas brought up ozzies over text later so it was "resolved" between them) but them not addressing it makes sense i think. I do agree that them spending what seems to be hours at the sitcom makes no sense especially because i think the main reason they didnt really bring up the drama was cause of bigger issues.

12:57 Considering that Stolas has been arguably the good one in the relationship virtually the whole time, once he messes up (getting with Blitzo while they were still married) she is NEVER going to let that go, and its going to be her main argument (nearly) every time they argue because its the most solid evidence that she has against him

ok, won't pretend the episode don't have some flaws worth noting, but in the analysis of S2E2 - 'Among the stars', there is actually a plausable explaination to what is going on with 2 issues. Otherwise, think the general look at things is fair. Even if I can see where some of the problems came from.
Stolas letting himself be stalled by the show - long shot, but I'd argue he knew Blitzo had sent Luna on the job, and so far I.M.P. has proven quite competent from his perspective. Yes, I think he should have dipped or ushered Blitzo to wrap it up as fast as possible, or something, but I see the logic.
Luna's assault - Her character is at least consistent in a couple things. 1, she is highly reactionary to just about any stimulus or perceived advancement. Some apparent exceptions, but is exceptionally so when it involves Blitzo. 2, Her reaction to just about everything imaginable is violence. In this sense, it's reasonable to think this was just reflex for her to kick Blitzo when he came up for a hug, as she doesn't react well to most any physical affection. And since it's pretty obvious if she wanted to, she could rip him to pieces, she likely knew he could take it and his nature meant he wouldn't be mad at her for it. Everyone in hell seems to be an exaggeration of more realistic behaviors, taken to their logical extremes when considered in an environment that don't punish a lot of those behaviors, so this would be a plausable explaination for the behavior, despite the progress made. She can say it to someone closer to her age, but she will do everything in her power to keep from making it obvious in any real way to outsiders that she cares. Though, the last part does leave me scratching my head, now that we can have access to the party episode, which I can't tell if contradicts this behavior, or if we can reasonably assume she didn't think about it for some reason or another during a certain scene in that episode.

The For Adults and For Mature Audiences label in the Intro isnt warranted anymore, I could explain every reason but the childish delivery and failure to utilize Demon Rulers as they are & Sins really representing their Sins and properly, the Hell setting and the Adult part of the Show just makes the label feel like a lie, I dont feel like explaining more but other shows like Code Lyoko do this better and XANA & XANA-fied individuals including the version of William in Season 4 are way better villains and CL last aired from 2004-2007 while getting enough out from the villains, improve quality in Season 1 and getting things done, show is truly adult than this.

I just binged the series a few days ago and was BLOWN AWAY by how the fandom seems to exclusively be either rampant hate towards almost everything in it (especially a wild level of hatred towards the Stolas and Blitz dynamic, sayings it’s toxic and abusive when it’s not it’s just unhealthy, which is interesting to watch develop and change) or complete blind adoration for it, completely ignoring or waving off any issues the show has (typically implying that Stolas and Blitz are “UwU wholesome gay babies” and Eli mating any interesting traits their dynamic has and that’s just weird and gross to me).
You are not only one of the only people I’ve seen to actually take the middle road of neither lambasting nor idealizing the show, actually acknowledging it’s goods and bags fairly. Also, aside from maybe two small things, you’re the first person I can safely say more of has opinions that align with mine, so at least now I don’t feel crazy for liking the show, lol.
