The hardest thing about NMM for a newb like me is that I don't have that feeling of how to portray light reflecting off metallic surfaces. I just can't visualize it in my head. Videos like this really help. Thank you!
if this helps, I remember seeing a tip where you use glossy black paint (Or Primer) on the mini and point a light source where you want it from. Wherever you see the light reflecting is where your focal points should be. Hope this helps!
NMM only makes sense for display pieces. If you are painting an army and moving them around the battle field then the portrayal of light doesn’t look right. Save yourself time and just do TMM for your armies.
Another eassssy way is to just video your model while primed and hold the light at a few directions. Play the video back and find the highlight angle you like the most and pause it 🎉
Sorry, I’m not sure why it added so many “S’s” in easy lol. Was not meant to de written that way lol
@@JEndymion Not if you paint it with multiple light sources! Currently trying to an army in NMM and it is a drag, but what better way to hone your skills?
OMG I had no idea there was a second Squidmar channel cool
I wanted to give a huge Thank You!!! for this bit. I’ve been struggling with Gold NMM on my MESBG Rivendell army, and after following this tutorial, everything came together in a very rewarding way. I had to sub out paints, but I’ll be sure to order your set after this.
Love the videos. Got all three sets. Not going to lie i thought the included QR code for the painting tutorials was going to be a paint along masterclass series where I could paint along with the legends in real time. Still looking forward to following the tutorials and painting these minis, just not as epic an experience as i thought i was in for. I did save money on buying the paint sets, plus the Squidmar minis so i did receive a good value. Just had this epic experience built up in my mind :(
Nice process. One of the best I am seen for an easy break down and the theory how to do NMM. You and Lucas are kings for simplifying theory and application, without tricks or endless products! One that would be cool that I rarely see on RUclips is to take this and add some sub surface scatter lighting. Let’s gets us all to competition painters haha
Lets gooooo!
oh my god a new squidly bits i was just looking at this channel yesterday
Hopefully we'll keep publishing videos here weekly from now on! :)
Same thing happened here lol
i love it thanks a tone, i allready happened to have the paints so i will definetly try it and master it.
yes in terms of light polacement i am a total noob, but at least i have the correct colours so now i am starting the fight!!!!!
Dope video mate, I got great results with my first attempt at NMM, very informative
Nice video. Didn't know you had another channel. Might be worth mentioning it on your main one! Looking forward to bingeing these videos!
Watched this video several times before giving NMM my first try. Video’s like this are realy realy helpfull! Thank you for all the efforts you guys put into in!
Have to say, I use a little different colours but this is spot on. Great video, great advice! Keep it up squiddy
Thank you for the video, really liked it!
Please make a detailed video of NMM steel, metal, iron.
I love this tutorial!! Amazing learning with you guys!! Hugs from Valencia :)
I gave this a go following the video and turned out rather well using citadel paints.
It’s been a while since you posted on here it’s good to see more content from you
Works absolutly fabulous. Thank you very much.
Now I would like to see the recipe for standard metal (greyish/silverish)!
Also I can recommend using "Heavy Goldbrown" from Vallejo paints as an alternative to a light brown :-)
YES! This is what I have been waiting for! Thank you Emil!
Amazing video! Thank you very very much ❤
Ive never painted a mini before but Space Marine 2 is making me wanna get into it
The glazing really does the magic!
Cool, wasn't aware of that channel. Greetings to Sweden! ✌
Thank God more tutorials I needed these
can you do one for steel or multiple metals and how you'd apply rust/ verdigris to it? I love the look of your metals vs just a metal paint.
Nice Gold NMM . I will try this colors in the future.
Thuis should be cool for the chest plates for marines. Now to decide what color I will make my marines.
Squidly Bits is back!
Fark yasss
we all need more Squidley Bits!
Gorgeous mini Paint
That tutorial was clean AF
Thanks E! This is great inspiration
Oh man, squidmar Tutorials
Thanks for doing this excellent tutorial
Can you also make a Steel NMM version of this tutorial please!
More tutorials like this please
Awesome. Cant wait to get started.
Need a nmm silver asap 😩🙏🏻
Can you do a tutorial for silver or at least provided your colour recommendations, I'm imagining more blue/greys
Holy smokes those paint sets look hella sexy
Very helpful and beautiful work.
Hope there will be many more tutorials in this format.
Is there any information on wich colors are included in these sets?
Will come
This is such an excellent tutorial!
Happy you enjoy it!
THANK YOU!
Its so good to be here :D
Yo that paint job slaps
I clearly have no intuition on where to place the first highlight layer for NMM lol. Time to get some references and practice!
Prime the mini black, place a light in Front of the Mini (Position as you want the higlights) and Take a picture, this Picture will Show you all higlights and shadow parts and you can Just follow this Picture while you Paint
If u are kind new on this tecnique this Is my personal suggestion after many trial...dont focus on where the light are going to correctly place just focus more on smooth the color right...then with practice u naturally start seeing where the light should go...or at least that worked for me :)
@@reosir1yeah get your Point for Sure but i often Paint really rough NMM and think the right Placements and the right colors already selling the effect
@@tilo8812 if It match for you It means that u have done a good job cause keep in mind that in the end It a matter of how mutch time did u wanna spend on smooth the effect, unless u want to win a Golden demon i think that's if u like what u see its ok, otherwise try to question the light that u place moving it to another angle and see what suit the best...if u have same copy in same pose of minis( that's quite easy to have) try to change the secondary reflex or mabie some angle and see what's the bether ... My advice if u love the tecnique, thing that i personally do, never gonna give u up[cit.] and go on painting :)
Uh and more important all of that its only my opinion ofc, this video Is really amazing and teach a really good tecnique that im going to try for sure but for example i personally use a different recipe for nmm Gold like i mix ak tenebrous Gray with ak Sahara Yellow covering 80%/90% of black than use Sahara Yellow covering 90% of previous step, then 1:1 Sahara Yellow with Ice Yellow on 90% of previous step and then a little bit of pure White for extra brightness only Just on max reflex point...the contrast with the black for me its more of impact than the Brown but this Is only a matter of personal taste
More Vallejo please.
I was wondering how the final glaze would work using yellow ink instead.
Really cool.
How awesome ✨✨
Dang, only just found this channel! Didn't know you had it alongside your main.
With the shadows to push the paint job further would glazing a burnt umber or similar tone over the shadow areas be a good next step? (similar to the yellow stage you did) thanks
I would be way too scared to do that last glazing step. So I guess I'm about to have copper stormcasts. 😅
Emil talking, Lukas doing all the manual work😅
Team work 🥳
@@squidlybits1985 ...makes the dream work :)
Think you could do a video to get a cell shaded effect? Ie something like borderlands
HELL YEA
Nice. As some one who is heavily invested in pro acryl any suggestions for their colours? (Cause I can see those of us down under never seeing your paints ever sadly)
Please tell us where the angel mini is from!
HOW DO YOU DO YOUR ROCKS!!!
Hi Emil and Lukas, great tutorial! Why do you prefer now parasite brown instead of scrufolous brown? Is it the colour tone or the coverage?
Scrofulous brown is much more on the yellow side, and lacks a little bit of that transition between the darkest to the midtone. Parasite brown does it all with one coat. So while we used to love scrofulous brown as one of the colors to use in the mix, after our extensive testing the past two years to find the ultimate colors, we got a much better result from parasite brown!
Why have I only just found out about the 2nd channel😮
It's been dormant for like 2 years, we're hoping to do weekly as long as we find time :)
Can you paint some TAU and Hero quest the new version
i see that tattoo i know its actually Lukas painting
bet he didnt even get his cookie for this one
Haha yeah, team work makes the DreamWorks for us to be able to make as many videos as possible:)
Yohoho
I wished you tell us some alternative brands and colour, i have s many but not these 4... :(
Parasite brown is raw sienna
Was lookig for a way to paint a tigress pattern tabaxi mini cant fain any tutorials
here, take those colors. Now draw the rest of that effin owl.
What brush does he use
any citadel replacement for them (i only have citadel paints)
@@obi-wankenobi3477 for the gold, it's really difficult to get this tone without sun yellow and parasite brown. You've got colors that get about 70% of the way, but for the gold I wouldn't compromise. The brown you can use rhinox hide though. I can't remember the closest color to sun yellow. Maybe dorn yellow?
Im having a hard time with very small bits. Like the little dangly strips that hang from an Overlords chest. I have no idea what to do with them cause theyre flat and so small
Do you have a great brush for it? We did a video on brush control on the main channel some weeks back. Could be worth a watch
Everytime i try this... all layer colours end up mixing , it doesnt looks like this at all...
not sure what you mean. Are you adding the next layer before the previous one havent dried, or do you mean that you're painting the next layer on too big of a surface so there's no transitions?
@@squidlybits1985 I ADD THe layers instantly before the layers below dry, then i try to do a "glazing" but end up mixing all layers into one colour making a whole mess
@@squidlybits1985 yes, i add the layer before the layer below dries and beacuse of that it ends up mixing and doing a whole mess....
Dear lord please link your background music in your videos. Whoever does your editing has some great study/work/painting music
#morecookiesforlukas
Bro i do see that but 😅 do i have the talent to paint it 😂
I hope, there will never exist non metallic progressiv metal or non metallic metal gear solid
Non metallic death metal
