Filmmaker Wes Anderson recalls the initial test screening of his now cult classic "Bottle Rocket." Every review card from the audience read negative, save for one, and it looked like an "outline of a dissertation." Anderson remembers thinking, "This is our audience!"
-----
LIVE from the NYPL presents an evening with director Wes Anderson ("Rushmore," "The Royal Tenenbaums") in conversation with screenplay co-writer Noah Baumbach ("The Squid and the Whale") about "Fantastic Mr. Fox," Wes Anderson's first animated film. In "Fantastic Mr. Fox," Wes Anderson utilizes classic handmade stop-motion techniques to tell the story of the classic children's book by Roald Dahl.
Mr. and Mrs. Fox (George Clooney and Meryl Streep) live an idyllic home life with their son Ash (Jason Schwartzman) and visiting young nephew Kristofferson (Eric Anderson). But after twelve years of quiet domesticity, the bucolic existence proves too much for Mr. Fox's wild animal instincts. Soon he slips back into his old ways as a sneaky chicken thief and in doing so, endangers not only his beloved family, but the whole animal community...
The film is produced by Allison Abbate, Scott Rudin, Wes Anderson and Jeremy Dawson.
Wes Anderson is the Director, Co-writer and Producer of "Fantastic Mr. Fox." He was born in Houston, Texas and attended college at the University of Texas at Austin. He is the director and co-writer of "Bottle Rocket," "Rushmore," "The Royal Tenenbaums," "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou," "The Darjeeling Limited" and the short "Hotel Chevalier."
Noah Baumbach is the co-writer of "Fantastic Mr. Fox." He wrote and directed "Margot at the Wedding," "The Squid and the Whale," and "Kicking and Screaming." With Wes Anderson, he co-wrote "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou" and he is a contributor to The New Yorker magazine's "Shouts and Murmurs" department. His latest film, "Greenberg," was released in 2010 by Focus Features.
Two of my all-time favorite, hilarious movies are Bottle Rocket and The Big Lebowski (the theaters were empty when I saw Lebowski twice), and both of them bombed in the theaters. Shows you what audiences know.
+Sexually ambiguous drowned rat wow, youre really discerning with thst subtle, sarcastic undertone!
Allan Ostermann Well big lebowski is overrated so it shows audiences are smart and at the same time dumb for missing the really good bottle rocket.
Mine too!!!
@@rockylovesemily2556 shut up
Audiences know shit, this is common knowledge
To be honest, i can't actually imagine a person like him to exist. He must be leading a very happy existence, a sort of life to the fullest. I mean, it looks like he has a lot of courage to do unique things, a lot of curiosity and everything just works out...I wish i could live like that.
You CAN live like that, Katya... Set an intention, and do what makes you feel GOOD every day.
I think that's how a lot of people feel. He is so distinctly himself people call him "quirky" or w/e but I think he just does everything exactly the way he loves to do it. Some people will always hate that!
I don’t care how old you are. It’s never too late to start doing it NOW. If you know what you want, be relentless and passionate about it, and be eager to improve. Social anxiety is a bitch, I know. But your passion will be your sunscreen, and you’ll just push onward…because it’s your passion.
I hope you do this. I really do.
The only thing holding you back is your attitude baby,
what a fucking depressing comment.
It blows my mind that anyone can be a fan of Wes Anderson AND dislike the Life Aquatic at the same time. To me it's the *ultimate* Wes Anderson movie, it's everything that is great about the rest of them plus more.
MobioDEN one of my favs along with moonrise
The 'plus more' is the problem. I loved it personally but something about your language here seemed to highlight the exact difference between your and my perspective vs others.
@@Dudevid I agree
love bottle rocket hate aquatic
I really like all his movies except Life Aquatic. It's so fucking boring and slow
I have watched Bottle Rocket 7-8 times, and will watch it again this summer. One of the greatest dialogue movies of all time. I use lines all the time:
"What has Grace ever done with her life that's so impressive?"
"How did and asshole like Bob ever get such a great kitchen?"
"You gotta get me one of those cool jumpsuits!"
Brilliant!
How about, "You're really complicated, aren't you?" or "Paraguay, that's over under Guatamala..."
"Exhaustion? But you never worked a day in your life"
I can't fix a car like that because I don't have the tools to do it. And even if I had the tools, I don't think I could fix a car like that.
Lawn Wranglers
“He looks like a little banana” holds a special place for me lol
And now it's part of the Criterion Collection.
Like most of his films
And since then, wes anderson is one of the many kings of the criterion collection kingdom.
Bottle Rocket was among my 12th grade English teachers favorite movies.
Its in Scorsese's Top 10 films of the 90s
Because Martin has some really good taste
Bottle Rocket is a reimagining of Mean Streets, if you really break it down.
How could you leave that film it’s such a classic I remember my first viewing and I quickly determined this was my favorite movie of all time
It's my favourite film ever, but I can understand why someone watching a Wes Anderson film for the first time wouldn't know what is going on.
THIS IS OUR AUDIENCE!
His face when he says this is gold, and its cool to see considering the situation he was in
Wes Anderson is not only my fav director, he is my fav human being .. I love the world he creates in every of his movies.. and each of his movie is soo personal that hit me til its hard to move on and enjoy other movies.. I have to seek his inteviews of article after watching one of his movies.. always.. this is crazy...
More than any other director, he creates worlds I would want to live in.
Bottle Rocket is my fav Wes Anderson film!!
Wes Anderson is really funny
It shows you how underrated Bottle Rocket is!
yeah, i really liked bottle rocket
"Bottle Rocket was written in sort of an obsolete vernacular... Bottle Rocket... Bottle Rocket... I'm gonna go."
I stumbled upon bottle rocket, thought it was an amazing film, so funny and original, watched it several times, don't understand how you could dislike it.
Ya know...we're all pretentious in our own way. Some of us more than others. And ya know what...I don't care if Wes Anderson is pretentious or not. He still takes me through every possibly emotion known to man during his movies..and I love him as a director for that very reason..
Screening a brilliant art comedy in Santa Monica. Ain't no trip to Cleveland.
I adored Bottle Rocket from the first viewing onward.
4:51 crazy how a little review from a complete stranger can impact so many people. Who knows what films he makes without anyone getting his first film. So and heartfelt thanks to her.
Bottle Rocket was hilarious! I loved it!
This bit is really insightful.. It's nice to be able to live in a society where movies can be made for a niche audience. "This is our audience!" Sweet.
I can imagine Wes consciously making his later films even more tailored to the "smarter than's." My recollection of Bottle Rocket is that it's pretty much a bare bones caper movie. It's my least favourite of his films, but it might very well be the most "Wessian."
bottle rocket is a groundbreaking movie .... which not many realizes till now .... the movie moved me like no other anderson movie could ...
Ugh! Come back to your city, Wes!! D: we miss you!! My second favorite director! He's so amazing.
6 years after your comment... What's your favourite film?
He seems like a very nice cool guy. No wonder his movies are relaxing to watch and funny.
Watched Bottle Rocket without any prior knowledge of it the year it came out on video and I thought it was epiphany and have loved it ever since.
Bottle Rocket is my favourite comedy of all time. The first time my friends and I saw it we new it to be a classic straight away. Today, I turned to someone and commented, " I paid for the gun." My buddy burst out laughing!
I don't even understand people who could fail to see the raw brilliance in THE BIG LEBOWSKI or BOTTLE ROCKET. These movies were incredible and gripping from the first frame to the last. BOTTLE ROCKET was an incredible movie and I laughed really hard through the entire thing.
Texas Arcane I liked bottle rocket but big lebowski was overrated to me. As all coen bros films are overrated.
@@rockylovesemily2556hahaha
just goes to show that even one of the greatest filmmakers of all time struggled at the beginning
"This is my audience"
Right on, Wes!!
ya serious
Bottle Rocket is still my favorite of his.
Bottle rocket is still my favourite Wes Anderson film. It’s funny all the way through lol
He is so funny! The Darjeeling Limited is my favorite movie of his but I like all of his movies and just being in their world. Bottle Rocket is full of heart, great movie!
Gotta get me one of these jumpsuits... Wow, I love this story and the ending. So cool to hear how this all worked out.
um and his themes make his entire body of work stand together as a cohesive unit, an incredibly impressive, beautiful feat. the end.
I saw bottle rocket in college for an English class. Thank you Mr Saunders for showing me this amazing film. I got an A on my Paper because I was so into this film.
It's in my top 10. Incredible movie. Wonderful soundtrack
One of my favorite movies ever!
i dont care what people say, i love his movies!
Favorite two movies in the universe: Bottle Rocket and Waking Life. So weird that people walked out. Ok, I understand not being too into it, but I don't walk out of movies. Heh.
Saw Bottle Rocket in a near empty theater in Boston when it first came out and LOVED it. Didn't have the chance to write Wes a note, alas.
People are calling him pretentious? Do people not understand what that word means? The word implies that he's making his movies look like they mean something, but they actually don't. He uses pretty simple stories but the execution is very unique and detailed. People like these things.
Wes is farrr from pretentious. I associate that word more with Antonioni, or even Fellini. Difference is that Fellini is actually watchable and made some great films. Antonioni just bores me. Sorry if you're an Antonioni fan.
I liked Bottle Rocket the first time I saw it, but I didn't love it. I didn't say to myself "This movie HAS to be in my collection!" That day did come, tho, shortly after I watched (and fell in love with) Rushmore, and decided to revisit Bottle Rocket. I was so hungry for more Wes after that.
I just watched bottle rocket for the first time last week, I loved it! Soo good, it was ahead of its time. Inspiring also as a film maker and writer myself
Bottle Rocket rocked and everything since.
Another great interview. They are so comfortable around each other and there is something to be said about that. He's truly a storyteller. Anderson doesn't come off as being pretentious to me. He seems confident in himself and what he is saying and what he is doing. I'm working on a re-make of the short of 'Bottle Rocket' and would love feedback of it when I'm finished in terms of you think I did right and liked, and what you think I did wrong and/or took away from keeping your attention.
I love Bottle Rocket and all your other movies. You’re a genius and you’re so UN-Hollywood. Thank God.
I love this story about wes screening bottle rocket.
one of my favorites
I love all of your movies Wes, Bottle Rocket...very funny...Rushmore...just great and very quotable, and Life Aquatic, easily my all time favorite. Your films are high brow and intellectually demanding so those who do not enjoy them simply do not have the capacity for your wit and sense of vision. Keep doing what you do!
Jason Brown lol relax their buddy, his movies are good but you don't need to be smart to enjoy them. It's not like the movies are complicated. They just have strange different humor. The people who enjoy his movies tend to be the ones who watch a lot of films.
Yes everyone who does not enjoy films you like are dumb. In reality, people just have different tastes not everyone is into weird movies.
Still the funniest thing I've ever seen
my favorite of his films
One thing this interview shows that we don’t often hear about is how self deprecating and funny Wes Anderson is in interviews likewise Noah Baumbach
Most encouraging video ever
Anderson, even when he is below average as in his last two films is still better than 90% of what's out there. I can only wonder what mutants saw that first screening of Bottle Rocket, but it is easily one of his best.
I loved Bottle Rocket!!!
😂i loved little touches like when the police finally caught up with owen hiding in the fridge and they yelled "Freeze!"😅
Loved Kicking and Screaming. One of Will Ferrell's most underrated films. Kudos, Andy Garcia.
Griffin Taylor he doesn’t mean that kicking and screaming...
Wes Anderson and the Coen Brothers make the best movies. lol
I love Bottle Rocket, so much.
Bottle Rocket is one of my favorite films. I tried to Life Aquatic with an ex and The Darjeeling Limited with my sister; both found the films boring.
His pacing is slow and there delivery is random but his filming style is genius and feels so good; if you have patience and an attention span. I have ADHD; idk what other people's excuses are
bottle rocket bombed? ... not in my world. one of my top favorites from W A.
I loved Bottle Rocket!!
Smart girl!
my favourite director...
I saw Bottle Rocket in a packed theatre in Vancouver & the place went nuts for it. Some folks don't get it???
Bottle Rocket is amazing
Very interesting.
Bottle Rocket, Rushmore and Tennebaums are as good as films get for me. I really feel like they lost something when Owen stopped writing.
Is he talking about the original or the remake? I can't believe people would walk out of the Bottle Rocket remake?!? Martin Scorsese named that the 6th best film of the decade.
There are two types of people in the world, those who get bottle rocket and those who don't.
I love that Wes is Texan.
I love that movie.
The first time I saw Bottle Rocket, I flipped. I thought it was the funniest thing I'd ever seen. And I knew nothing about it prior to watching it. I was just channel surfing my TV and landed on it. It killed me. And since then I've watched it so many times. people who don't get it are just dumb.
Good stuff!
his best movie by far
@jamesrdoe There is some pretension in Anderson's filmmaking, but it's not intolerable. In fact, it's kind of endearing. He's an undoubtedly gifted filmmaker. And "Bottle Rocket" makes perfect sense. "Rushmore" is a comedic masterpiece. "Royal Tenenbaums" too. I don't know where you get off saying his movies don't make sense. They're very clear.
Thats true. The Life Aquatic wasnt his best. But it was still a good film. And yeah he should really stick with writing with Roman Coppola or Owen Wilson. After all, all his best films were written with hem.
i love bottle rockit so much
great story!!!!
How could the audience react so harshly when it has an 85% on Rotten Tomatoes? Did they recut before the main release?
I know this is immature to point out, but I just find the acronym "nypl" funny as hell...
He's a funny man. Funny funny man no wonder he created this lovely movie it's one of my absolute favs by him. Movies you'd take on a desert island? I'll have this one thanks!
Wes Anderson isn't pretentious in the least. Anyone who watches this and thinks so clearly doesn't know the meaning of the word. Noah Baumbach on the other hand...don't get me wrong I love both of their films (i might even like Baumbach's style a bit more) but Baumbach is certainly not the most humble guy around, and I definitely would prefer to hang out with Anderson for a day,
Kicking and Screaming is a 1995 film by Noah Baumbach about a group of college graduates who refuse to move on with their lives.
I just wish that the title of this video made it clear that it is a PREVIEW, not a full interview.
Bottle Rocket is Perfect
Please release full video. I can't find it on foratv. Cool watch anyhow
Touche, sir.
I agree with you 100%. Although I dont see too much pretension in his films. And I really dont see why his movies would be hard to follow. The Darjeeling Limited(my favorite of his films) was straight forward with its plot and message. Some people just dont get them I suppose.
Ended right at the good point. dang it...
They don't. The only rotten film in Rotten Tomatoes is Life Aquatic (and The Darjeeling Limited is pretty close to being rotten). That's it. Critics loved the rest of them. I would love his movies even if critics were actually shitting all over them, but they are not, and that makes me happy.
Come on, The Darjeeling Expresses is awesome! Plus it has homages to ray so... I fuckin love it
@@tagorewithlyric4394 Me too. It's my favorite Anderson film. In my opinion it is very underrated (if you look at Rotten Tomatoes or IMDB).
@@jktomas yaaaay!
wow, what was wrong with that audience! Bottle Rocket is hilarious! I'm laughing just thinking about it haha
@Hudsucker94 It's common knowledge that recurring themes are a sign of a good filmmaker. See Orson Welles, Martin Scorcese, and (gasp) the Coen brothers, for instance. It's a sign that a film is the work of a human being, rather than a slick Hollywood star vehicle, like The Hangover. And, it is ludicrous to say that a movie about an explorer of the ocean is the same movie as one about a rich family gone to ruin, and one about a poor kid at a prep school, and one about a fox who burgles old men.
critics don't shit on his films..the general public does. critics just dont give him the recognition he deserves..i mean he has a couple oscar nominations
I actually like the fact that people didn't like Bottle Rocket. We can all agree that "Titanic" was a great movie, but Bottle Rocket only appeals to an Eclectic Soul.
I'm sure Wes is going to read this and stop making films because of your opinion. He is an amazing director and writer and his films are fantastic. Maybe you just don't understand them.
@wubbadubdub i originally thought this too. you need to rewatch it, it got so much better for me the 2nd time around.
So if there’s remembering that many of the great composers had audiences walk out and even riot at times, such as Stravinsky, Shostakovich and Beethoven
And Ween
No, it's a movie about a soccer coach that coaches his son's soccer team and then has like a rivalry with his dad and it's about like father son reconciliation in the face of discordant values and unrequited expectation. It also has a really funny part where Will Ferrell starts drinking coffee and at first he doesn't like it or had never tried it and then he really likes it and he's all irritable and stuff without in this coffee shop when he's waiting in line. Other than that it's pretty serious
