Right
Super
Back in the day this was called a jerry curl. The problem is having to have it moist all of the time. I like to be able to touch my hair and not have wet oily hands from it.
Yes, you right. I had a Jerry curl back in the day
Right, it’s still a curl
It does not have to be wet and oily it depends how you keep you curl nice a dry yet beautiful and radiant..
Same product, just rebranding 🤔. Will sit back and see how long it last. Used to be kinda on messy side tho🤦🏽♀️
Been there done that……
You did this Perfect!!!! I have seen many stylists skip or improperly do soooo many steps. Most don’t base the scalp. They put the booster on ALL the hair at the beginning no wonder it comes out with stringy straight ends. They don’t rinse the hair well. They are stingy with the products and don’t want to saturate the hair so the curls has set properly. I have seen stylist sit clients under the hair dryer for 25 to 45 minutes with Heat!!! No wonder they have breakage. They don’t use cotton they put a towel up to your forehead and tell the client to hold it. SMH.
I just wanted you know I appreciate doing this textbook style and we need more stylist like you.
Awe thank you so much
Just saying.. SHOULD I EVER DESIRE CHEMICAL SERVICES.... I'M FINDING THIS LADY!!!!!!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
As a fellow beautician this is not a service I offer but you have mastered it so beautifully.
Job well done 👍🏽
Omg 😩the memories. My mother was a hairdresser back in the 80's and I used to love watching her do Jerri curls unfortunately she died young of cancer 😢
My mother as well what's a cosmetologist and she knew everything about hair. I used to watch her do her thing and she too died from cancer at an early age.😢😢
OMG so the chemicals cause cancer. My mom had a Jerry curl for years and she went natural in her later years. Died at 57 from brain tumor.
I’m so sorry for your loss 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Yep I was the hairdresser around that time ( early 90s) also I took a 10 year break from doing anything concerning hair for that very reason. I even went natural am in my 50s now because they did tell us in cosmetology you actually have a lifespan 25 of years in the field of cosmetology because of the chemicals and repetitions and shoulders loses strength. It was in our books it was part of our curriculum
@@tashaw3636You can’t be sure of that, people die of cancer everyday. We all have cancer cells in our body so anything can trigger it to come out, including stress. Chemicals do cause cancer but is can breathing in second hand smoke.
I love that you demonstrate that you actually have true knowledge! It's refreshing to see a stylish who knows the "whys"!
Cosmetologists go to school and learn the why’s, the how’s, etc. Stylists are just that someone who styles hair.
@@TemaNem I'm VERY will aware of what a licensed cosmologists is, in fact, I started the education myself. There are PLENTY of licensed cosmologists who don't know the why's and how's, because they did just enough to pass and didn't retain anything and don't care to know or grow by continuing their education! Hence why I gave this woman props!
exaaaaactly ! if a stylist isn't THIS knowledgeable , i don't want her coming anywhere near my head with chemicals
You are the only stylist to put the base all over the scalp and not just around the hairline. You applied the first step meticulously. Where are you located?
Do u Kno where she is located???
Jamaica? Best stylists for black women on earth are Detroit, MI, Atlanta, GA, Jamaica, and African cities like Nigeria,
@ThinkAboutMyComment Los Angeles too. Home of the silk press
@@marlomills6800 I lived there for a while. I still think Detroit and ATL go way more ham on black hair and black hair shows. Silk press is everywhere.
@@ThinkAboutMyCommentyou are correct! Detroit and ATL is hair capitals in the USA
She’s the best she taught me in high school cosmology 😊❤
I really love how thorough your explanation is 😊
Daaaaaaaaaaaamn and went WAY WAAAAAAY bacc to the Jheri Curl.
I remember SO many ppl in my family getting this when I was a child. The MEN & WOMEN. The smell in the room the first couple of days after getting that I still remember. And that Jheri Curl spray definitely had a smell to remember
I give om it to her SHE DID HER THING & DEFINITELY went by the book 📖 on this one
I like how gentle you are on the hair, beautiful result 😍
Thanks dear😊
I've ALWAYS enjoyed the Jherry Curl. That and cornrows seem to be the only styles that make my hair healthy and grow. I want on so bad....AGAIN 😂!!!
Your technique is textbook perfect. And your information is so thorough.
Wow! Thank you for explaining each process and it was a joy to watch how gentle you were with her hair. Amazing results.
It's been many many a year since I've had a relaxer. Never had a curly perm. I love the application and the knowledge of the service giver. I would trust her.
Thanks for this video! As perms regain popularity, customers keep coming in with different experiences, glad to know I’m on the right track and following the service as I’m supposed to
Awesome😊🙌 you get the best result when each step is followed accurately.
Popularity. Yeah, this is basically an old school jheri curl.
Perms should not be gaining anything. There are lawsuits going on now about perm companies because they have chemicals in them that cause cancer
Very professionally done. Now seeing this, i know my hairdresser did everything right back then. She is a keeper.
This was very NOSTALGIC! I'm simply reminiscing. Great work!
Me too girl! 😂😂😂
Where are you located? I want you to do my perm 😊 I can tell you love what you do. You take your time with each step. A TRUE PROFESSIONAL. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Can you do a follow up video of when it’s time to process her new growth please? I loved this video. Thank you.
That’s old school for real jherri curl all she needs is carefree curl spray a ton of pillowcases and towels because it was greasy 😀😀
😁the method remain the same it's just the products that has changed. No greasiness now
Yup I did this not good for your skin
@@kurlymekajust have to keep it wet
@@kurlymekawhat moisturizer do you recommend for the curl. I'm having some trouble finding care free moisturizer
@@queenelueme8946 I’m having trouble also, I believe it is because soft sheen is discontinuing its products for the curl systems as well as the whole curl systems
Wow Jeri curl is back😵💫
I love it, I actually stayed to watch this whole video.
Awe that’s awesome😊thanks for watching
Why not try a new way to do the curly perm instead of braking down all the bonds in the hair, you could stop the process when you see the curls in her natural curl are wavy you could rinse the thio relaxer then from that point apply the rest of process to set the natural wave in the hair.
You did a great job!! I have been giving my hair a rest for the past 2 years and am now looking for a way to KEEP my hair!! Great alternative! I love how you take extra care and do the cotton around the ears and fresh towels!! I just don't see that in the salon anymore. It seems they want to burn your hair and kick you out!😁
This was very educational. You did a great job. Your explanations were like that of a teacher. Thank you.
Really enjoyed your video. I’m English/ white lady , been having perms since the 1970s , it’s the only way to control my thick strong hair. Now age 65 and it’s still thick and a mind if it’s own. You took such care and attention in your process, much better than my hairdresser. Along with chemical burns and ending up like a drown rat and tops ruined , the thought never crossed my mind that you could perm your type of hair with out having problems, so thanks for the education. The end result was amazing ❤
I’m natural but THIS😍😍😍😍 She definitely did a BIG ONE on this style. Very detailed and beautiful work 👏🏾👏🏾
This style is still very popular in my country..! Wife’s of politicians and business women always wear that style . It’s still in style in my country
Ms. Meka, I love your careful work. True professionalism.
Thank you
It looks really good and the detail you put into it was inspiring. If I was not relaxed I would look for you and beg you to do my perm! 😃😃
😀😀thanks
you ACTUALLY rinse the hair very very well...most stylists dont do that when you have been going to them for a while..they get lazy about rinsing and tell lies... I havent had any good experiences with hair stylists
Beautiful
Right with you sis
Do Not shampoo after you rise perm
I love the care that you are taking of your clients hair ❤
1st, this was a very nice & detailed video. I can tell she's your friend 🤗
2nd, i really hope your friend likes it! From what i see, I would want a friend like u doing my hair🤗
3rd, as a viewer we always want that "wow" factor. I wonder if we can achieve that "wide rod" curl pattern VS that (what ppl keep saying) "jheri curl" pattern using Curly Perm?
I mean, for all-that-work, it just seems like there should be more 🎉🎉 pazazz !!
Much success & prosperity 🙋🏽
Edit: We need 2 wks later update
Expert application. It actually looks healthier
My God You’re the Professional i was looking for.
As a portuguese speaker i was looking for vídeos in portuguese about how to apply perm by myself cz last year i spent 260€ to do that in a hair Salon this price without the Transport bcz here Where i live there is just 1 Salon i know that they do perm in african hair and it is 4hours far from me, but i went there last year i have to be honest the Woman was not so carefully like you were With your client maybe because she saw i hd Virgin afro hair. She didnt put any Protection on my scalp she just aply the product. Thank God i did not get hit with the chemical.
So it has been 5months that i did it. 2months After the process a lost the curls or wave maybe it is normal but i cant See myself paying this money again. My hair is very Natural at the top and i want do the perm by myself with a help from my boyfriend in February.
I‘v order the Wella Straight to do this and i saw o hv used also something called booster so i Look on Internet booster from Wella i find alot and dont know which one i should buy. Can u please give me a tipp?
I would be very thankful
Sorry for my English not my Language
You are so thorough ❤ It came out beautifully!
You done an amazing job, thank you for this video. ❤
Thanks for your timely tutorial and explanation with each step. Great teaching
I am thankful for your video. Did my curly perm on 08/10/2024 and am loving it!!! it followed your direction and it came out really nice thanks again. Mati
I love your technique. You are a professional, you did a Beautiful job. Old school style❤
Very detailed and accurate explanation, nice job 👏
Thank you😊
@kurlymeka where is your salon?
the jeri curl is now the curly perm minus all that greasy drippy juice the put on it back in the day
It still has to be moist or it will look a mess.
That’s why she showed it wet.
It’s always been a curly perm. Jheri Curl is a brand name that people started using that generically. What you are saying is like saying Jello is now gelatin. QTips are now cotton swabs.

Problem you have to keep it in a wet state which means the hair is weaker there are more modern methods that mean the hair is dry. When I had a curly perm the lotion that kept it wet got into my skin and gave me a lot of spots, glad I don't do this anymore just relaxer
I never used the drippy stuff; I found moisturizing gels; they worked beautifully; there was no dripping, greasiness nor spots on walls and furniture; and my hair never stuck to anyone's face. That was 30+ years ago.
Back in the Day , Care Free Curl / Luster Silk Curl , TCB Curl
I miss my Jerry curl omg this brings back so many memories of when I was a teenager in the 80s lol
Where is your salon Meka? You are so detailed and thorough. Excellent job!
I'm a full Natural that would consider a chemical treatment but it's tricky to find thorough stylists that prioritize healthy hair.
Hi dear thank you. I do not have a salon but maybe in the future I might consider having one. 😊
@@kurlymeka Do you rent a booth at a salon then? If so, where is it and how can potential clients book an appointment? I am interested.
Your so knowledgeable and purposeful need to teach some of these Instagram stylists 😂
Now i know you are doing jerry curls so prewash good thing
first time I see a stylist using a base prior to using chemicals. Did not it even existed. All I have seen up to now is the use of vaseline around the edges and nape area. Great results! Congradulations
I could tell her eyes and nose were burning haha! Bless her heart - welcome to the world of female beauty, my dear!
So pretty those curls are poppin ❤
I used to have curls back in the day .....they will most definitely grow your hair......I don't know what it is about that curl but your hair will grow tremendously long and thick. I was thinking about going back to get mines ✔️ done....but I don't know with all the hype about the relaxers that have caused Women to have Cancer.....it's up and smokes for me.
It is the moisture that makes it grow
Reminds me of the care free curl, jeri curl days back in the 80s and 90s...i had the care free curl and it grew my hair like crazy...but after a while i went natural...be careful of those chemicals though...thanks for sharing this her hair looks great!
I like that you are thorough and very professional. Nicely done
Great job! From a person who aims for silky curls! 🌹💫
Wow be blessed your explanation is thorough n easy to understand. kindly do one for short hair
I love how you did the whole process. Her hair looks great 👍. Well Teka
Thank you😊
Though using different products know that you are my role model many of tutorials i do follow you though my English is hectic in taking i love you
Thank you
Um this a Jheri Curl period. I remember them steps all too well.
Me too!! Definitely a Jheri curl
Hey Ms lady u are a awesome teacher thxs for bringing this back!! Blessings 🙌
I haven’t had this done to my hair since the 1980’s. It’s crazy how styles come back. I love it, but I’m much more interested in keeping my hair the way it grows out of my scalp these days. However, I feel that all hair that comes out of your scalp is natural if it’s not a wig or weave.
I complain about my hair texture but I can achieve this without many products, so I will hush now 🤫
Very educational. I had no idea how labor intensive this service was.
In my Eddie Murphy voice…” That ain’t nothin but an Ultra Perm.”
Nice job. 👍🏾
I remember having a jerri curl back in the day my mom did it and I hated it because I always had to use Donnie curl activator to keep it moisturized those were the days ❤
I've been thinking about getting me a Jerry curl for a few months now. I think Imma end up doing it too, bring that s-curl activator and moisturizer back lol
I'm old enough to know a "Jheri Curl" when I see it ❤
I don't think I would never use this product ever again because I luv the natural way my hair is and my hair is curly any way I was born with curly hair 😂❤❤❤❤ I'm have so many styles on my natural hair and I luv it
It looks great, I've never seen anyone put the bar throughout the hair, if I were to ever get this again I'll do the same.
Scurl or Jerry curl in my days😂 I want one now
Wow..this was amazing. My hair never looked that good when I went the salon back in the day. I do my own hair and it is actually much better and longer and healthier now than ever before. I have no more breakage or burnt scalp...SMH. Bad experiences at salon are unforgettable. I went all natural and my hair loves it.
However, If I had you to do my hair I would be singing a different tune.
Lastly, I don't remember getting any pre base before any perms back then.
Liked and enjoyed the vlog. I can't wait to see more. It was nice and calming watching you do hair. Your really good, BTW.

A Jerry Curl? Wow, I haven’t seen that in a while.
Can I ask please why it was called a Jerry curl ? Being English my first perm was called A Afro perm ( sorry for using that word) it was a short tight perm and bouncy , thanks.
@@ThEhObBiT1959 It's called a Jheri curl after the creator Jheri Redding, an American hairdresser, chemist, hair-care products entrepreneur and businessman. That's just a quick snippet of what I found on Wikipedia.
I thinking about going back to the jherri curl. My hair grew like I don't know what. Loved this video.
Watching this was so relaxing 🥰
I used to perm my hair back in the 80s. This takes me baaaaack 😅
This took me back to beauty school days 😊 Great job
You are an amazing teatcher!
Thanks for your tutoring it really helped to refresh my skills
What is shelf-life for the Wave By Design, after using the first application?
Best video on RUclips. Thank you. You explained everything so well❤
Love how knowledgeable you are
Thank you for showing the very detailed process, including all the proper draping of the client. The last several steps seem very similar to a curly perm for European/Caucasian hair. Given that you are using a thiol product that will break down the disulfide bonds, and then a neutralizer to help them reconnect in their new positions (which sounds to me just like the perms for Caucasian hair) is it absolutely required to do the separate relaxing step first?
I'm considering this service but with bigger curls
Beautiful work. I love it 💕
Thank you
That's Nothing But an Carefree Curl
That’s was absolutely beautiful!!!🤩
Beautiful job God bless u
Your vid is amazing!!
Can we get an update of her hair I'm planning on doing this...
Also, do I need to treat my hair some months before and what natural methods can I use
Love the Jeri curl...❤
Say "parrrrasitey" one more time! Lol luv it.
You did a great job her hair is beautiful.
I love love love this ,very beautiful hair and well done to the stylist.❤❤
Make sure y’all use moisturizing conditioner only. Protein will make the hair fall.
Very beautiful, I m really impressed. Where can I buy the product s of that chemical perm?
❤
Check the description
Since it’s being brought up, I seriously doubt her hair will stay wet. I and other people I know use curly perm moisturizers and styling products like activator gel on our natural hair and it doesn’t stay wet. It dries but still looks shiny. I use to use Smooth and Shine Activator gel a lot until they changed the formula.
It does break down the disulfide bonds but its ph level is lower than sodium hydroxide.. sodium hydroxide break down more bonds than ammonium thioglycolate. When applying these chemicals I would stay off the scalp until the end because heat from the scalp causes chemicals to work faster two you still run a risk of irritating the scalp even with applying a barrier cream.. the parting of the hair with the end of that brush on the scalp alone can cause irritation due to improper parting of the hair.
It's been a while since I applied any chemicals. I tried to keep my clients natural. But curly hair is not going to be natural as we nappy heads want. So ty for the refresher video. Your amazing ❤
Uma verdadeira aula, trabalho minucioso resultado excelente.
Very nice! You are so careful and explains so well! I love it
I just learned this in cosmetology school great video
I used to BEG my mama for a Jherri Curl! She would spray activator on my hair to make me think I had one 😂
