Jan it's not in "best guitarist" list, because he's more than a guitarist, he's an absolutely great musician, amazing music colored man
Actually Jan was voted Best Guitarist in the World by readers of the UK magazine Melody Maker in 1973
This is the first time I've heard him playing lute he's very good I remember the focus song with the yodeling n had the noise of art CD he's a fantastic musician
Back in the early seventies he was ahead of everybody else on the guitar! They finally caught up to him, but without the passion! The notes he played on guitar captured our heart strings, and he is still going strong. Thank you Jan for all the inspiration, and your lute work is phenomenal!
wherever John is (maybe in Dowland)
he will love it !!!!!!!!!
thank you, Jan !!!!!!!!
Jan is one of the best living performing musicians.
Totally blown away by this track when I first bought Tabernakel.
The amazing Jan Akkerman, everyone! My most favorite guitarist ever, and if you follow his work beyond this single video, you will also agree.
Jan looks like an angel playing lute
Like Jesus
he is a genius, out of this world
He played this same piece on the lute live at Focus at the Rainbow theatre in London, 1973. lovely piece perfect for lute.
Jan you made my life better and I thank you for it .
I saw you play live in 1972 when I was 12 years old and I never stopped listening.
Such a placid, passionate man. I'm always fascinated by how knowledgeable he is and how he gets the right sound out of that beautiful instrument every note!
The man is a genius and no matter how much I watch that I am blown away each and every time. Don't get me wrong, i'm not gay but Jan Akkermann is a beautiful man.
What's wrong about being gay? What's wrong about being "hetero" and finding a man attractive.?
@@whistler8 What's wrong with not wanting to be perceived as gay if you're not gay? Just because we should not judge others on matters of sexuality does not mean we are not allowed to judge ourselves for risk of hurting others.
Always, always, one of my favourite guitarists of all time
he is an excelent player. we must cherish him.
imagine the versatility and the musicality of this man ! breathtaking...and beautiful.. :-) (and in those times, he was young !! )
I am absolutely mesmerized by this virtuoso’s incredible artistry. He is amazing. Wow.
Listening to him years later...still amazed!
Fantastic! I always considered him to be one of the finest 'rock' guitarist out there.
I have commented before, but as this came up on my YT page, I watched again and generally marvelled at his brilliance.
For me, he was one of the most communicative players ever. To see an ostensibly 'rock' guitarist doing something like this, was a revelation in the early 70's; not to mention his exquisite electric work.
Not long after that, this versatile approach was deemed only to be the province of session musicians, rather than rock stars [by punk inspired journalists.....].
I lost interest in the rock culture at that point.
Abso"lute"ly incredible musician!
abso"lute"ly incredible
what a wonderful word you created!!!!!!!
thanks ... smile
I have loved listening to jan Ackerman since watching him live at the rainbow , hooked from then l was 15 years old. Wonderful musician.
It was full credit to dear Mr Akkerman when he left Focus to concentrate on lute. I still believe he is a better acoustic player, as it brings more out of his creativity and ability as a superb guitarist.
Easily the best all rounder, jazz rock/blues classical- he ticked every box
Psychedelic?
steve howe
@@francogrx Great guitar player, Jan for me is better.
@@pinball1970 You can also mention Disco (oil in the Family), Dance (CU) . See him playing Rap with Ice T, Proto Thrash ( Fresh Air)
It never ends - The guy has been a creative genius. I forgive him recycling stock licks these days because it doesnt diminsh his greatness
@@hulldanfan Absolutely, he does some amazing lute stuff too. Genius
Akkerman....one of the greatest ever.......god bless him and Focus......
Never fails to make the hairs on the back of my neck stand to attention. His Suites 1 and 2 make me well up, so beautiful with such a rich tone
Thank you Jan for your Art!
Like it❤
Virtuose playing. Beautiful.
Aaaahhh! Fantastic!!!
This is so frigging awsome...
Fenomenal musicians....Jan Akkermann is very classic guitarist and lute musicians....
more than good, it`s sounds five 😊stars!
Excellent guitarist!
incredible
The most versatile guitarplayer on this planet or is there someone who plays lute..jazz..rock..jazzrock.prog..blues etc etc
Sublime
A genius at play
Fantastic Jan Akkerman. One of the best in all time! Thanks from Brazil.
Master Musician.
I love this guy
Amazing. Quite lovely.
Touches of “Elspeth of Nottingham” from what I remember back in the days
Vaak gedraaid.
Lovely stuff.
AHHHHH.....such music:)))
Bravo ! Gracias por compartirlo
Love focus..great music..
Amazing.
Incredible to see him in that era. Does Anyone else remember him playing this on the OGWT c.May 73?
MrMjp58 I remember that. I was expecting him to play the electric guitar so I was really surprised.
absolutely fab at 2:30. Best guitarist the Netherlands produced. 😎
Sort of reminds me of the sound of Steve Howe's solo portion off of the album Fragile by Yes, although I'm quite sure that Steve used a classic guitar, very nice little tune here!
Jan Akkerman is echt DE BESTE
amazing.
i think he is and was the best string player there was ever
Remember this as very early work.
superb
Fantasía y ensueño auditivo. Gracias.
Precioso!!!!!!
***** Excelente guitarrista...¡Mis respetos!
Mijn absolute Nederlandse gitaarheld
Euhhh, samen met EVH dan.
Listening to this joy in a very cold day in the south of Brazil, with tears in my eyes. Thanks Jan .... cheers from Brazil.
The Best❤️
Excelente 👍 diossssssss
This is an old masterpiece or a composition by Jan? If so, astounding classical level. Esp for a 1974 recent progrock guitar player.
todo dia eu to aqui
I knew i could buy my favorite band albums for a buck .at the bargin table..
Akkerman's playing is so alive. Not sure there's one ingredient to pin it down, almost a rock energy, maybe what flamenco players call 'duende'.
Bra...👍👍👍😀
Unbelievable...............1974.....
Jan not in best lists because he has been out of spotlight so long. I remember when he was with Focus he was rated one of the best. Loved listening to the various transitions on the hocus pocus album
Dowland Fantasie
The piece he's playing is one of John Dowland's fantasies ...
John Dowland was an English Renaissance composer and lutenist
@@Mormon_underwear Yes, he was... lots of Dowland on RUclips
@@dennismosercreativearts So I've discovered! That's why I always say RUclips is one of the greatest inventions on the Internet.
I've always loved Dowland's lute music. It gives me a feeling of being in a castle back in the Renaissance and gentler times. Music does stuff like that to me. He was a contemporary of Shakespeare. I played piano growing up until I took up drums at 16, then percussion. I've met a few classical guitarists, which is the technique one needs to study if one takes up the lute. And good fingernails.
@@Mormon_underwear Actually, the technique changed over time and to play music from Dowland and earlier, the nail isn't used... the right hand is actually held differently, too. Classical guitar will help you get there, but you need to change the technique eventually when you start playing the music on the lut.
I played the lute for about 20 years and played a number of Dowland's pieces, both for solo lute and as lute songs... and tried to learn this piece... it's a bit of beast and Akkerman really plays it a bit too fast for his own good. :)
@@dennismosercreativearts I didn't know that about the nails. In the past, guys like Julian Bream started with classical guitar before they played the lute, so I thought the technique is the same. Do you still play with your leg under the lute, like a classical guitar?
Grenzenlos good... *RD*
Swartabe funka snerbo snottia !!
If you wonder why guitarists like Clapton or Brian May talk about Akkerman with reverence, here's Exhibit 1
that sounded really different from what I expect from a 7-course lute. does he have steel strings on there?
No, I think it's just his use of fingernails that gives it that sound. Also, it's an early 70s lute, so it's probably not as lightly or historcally built as today's lutes.
wow, good call.
I found a frame at around 3:12 where you can clearly see a guitarist's-style thumbnail. it makes sense: he's primarily known as a guitarist, right?
I wonder how much of the difference in sound is explained by the lute, and how much by the fingernails.
thank you very much for your reply!
Am I wrong, or does his lute look as if it has fixes metal frets, instead of tied on gut ones?
Certainly appears to be a metal strung 7 course lute with metal frets... not exactly 'authentic' by today's Early Music standards. That takes nothing away from Jan's playing though!
The Lute is maybe metal fretted and He plays with the nails... Julian Bream did play on nickel fretted lutes and with the nails too and was criticesed of the purists in His time...
1:48 ups
The Maesto
So, what is the name of the piece?
Dowland's Fantasie no.7.
I would like to see and hear John Downland play....
Now go out and buy lute albums.
The difference between me and Jan Akkerman: he hit 2 bad notes playing this. I would have hit 2 good notes.
