This should, in a sense, be considered Jan Akkerman's forte. The lute is a fairly difficult instrument to play (not to mention to first learn it), as I'm sure many have pointed out. It's not exactly an instrument that you pick up at your local music store because your weekends are a bit boring. But he plays it with even more clarity than his guitar playing. Very beautiful sounding instrument if it's played properly.
Given the date of the video and the sound of it, it's actually not a very good instrument at all. It was only in the mid-70s that historically accurate lutes began to be constructed again.
I play this on the classical guitar and have a renaissance lute. It's no easy to play John Dowland's fantasia on either instrument. Well done Mr Ackerman my Dutch hero. 👍🍺🍺🇮🇪🇮🇪
He more understanding of classical music because of his European roots. Above-mentoned guitarlist are all guitarlists in popular music. Europe has more affluent history of music.
@Timothy Dexter I was not trying to belittle above-mentioned guitarlists. I just emphasized on Jan's European roots. European people are more affluent in music because some of many instruments are used in popular music like guitar and piano were invented in Europe. But, European classical players are far far better than Jan or any other above-mentioned guitarlists because they have been training themselves whole life by pracitising all day. Also, musicianl education in classical music is far more difficult and complicated than those of popular music. So, I'm against your opinion Steve Vai can do this kind of stuff and comparable to other lute or any string-instrumentalists. He's average guitarlists among classic and flamenco guitarlsits, but he's okay in popular music sphere. USA and UK are the roots of popular music, but Europe is the place where those popular music's origin was born. Basically, any UK or North American players are no competition against classical elites in Europe. Money, education and historical background and hard work are in different level.
Comparison are never a good way to appreciate the genuine art and creation. Each one of the guys included in this comparison are great kings into their own kingdoms, and they have a proper place into the modern music story. In spite of all before, I think Jan has special skills and a wide and more complete vision of music.
I have saw classic guitarlists' and flamenco guitarlists' shows and each of their fingers move independently like they each have different thoughts and minds. That is never be capable for rock or jazz guitarlists. Classic or flamenco are music for the guitarlists. Rock or jazz, maybe no. Their skills are never be comparable or in the same league with classic and flamenco players. So, afformentiond rock guitar players are maybe the best in the rock kingdom, but they can never compete against classic or flamenco players. That's why they stay in the postion called "rock guitarlists". You can never beat spacemen from outer space. Guitar came from Spain, france and Italia and never came from USA or UK. That's why Europenas have been dominating guitar world now and then. Now, rock or jazz are full of elderly who have out-of-date ideas and thiniking and screaming out loud "best, best and best". Classic music have a bright future because full of young people who have state-of-art skils and future mindsets.
Jan Akkerman, Philip Catherine and Eef Albers are three European guitarists that have been flying under the radar since the early 70s. They all took improvisational guitar to new levels but have garnered minimal acknowledgement. The track below, by Philip Catherine, "We'll Find a Way", IMHO, is the pinnacle of Fusion guitar. Enjoy ruclips.net/video/mvPpUOYb0xI/видео.html
Beautiful Lute playing, I just wish this recording was in better quality. Jan has always been one of my greatest guitar inspirations of all time. He has accomplished so many amazing things. You Are The Best, Jan. So live forever knowing that. You are the best!!! God Bless.
He played that song very well. The lute is not an easy instrument. It's similar to a guitar, has a lot more strings, and the finger plucking is very different. He did good.
@PricklyPete10 Jan Akkerman is very experienced on the electric and acoustic guitar. But also on the lute. And the lute is extremely difficult to play.
He once said: my beard is black because my grandmother is Jewish. My hair is blond because my granddad is Frysian and those two go very well together. Can't find the clip.
John Dowland was hired by King Christian IV and quite right got payed handsomely by the king. At king Christians “ summerhouse” the beautiful castle Rosenberg in Copenhagen, the king had installed tubes going from down the basement and up to the huge living rooms upstairs. From there he could signal down to the musicians in the basement when he wanted some music played. Quadrophonic music a la 1620 .
What do you mean - inspired by the danish people? He mentions that Dowland was employed by a danish king - true, for eight years, and weren´t particular happy about it.
Am I seeing things, or does that look like a "hoodie" (or whatever it's called elsewhere) that he's wearing? I didn't think they were around in the 1970s.
Heavy-metal numskulls need to look and listen to this first of all to understand how little their knowledge of music is and how modest their fast playing technique is.
Jan is a Pioneer and one of the best of all time. Such a genius
Jan Akkerman- one of the great musicians of our time.
The man that's so underated great player a master
What a guy!
Saw him live in London around 2010, solo set. For at least a week did not touch my guitar, thinking itd be an act of profane...
Got to love Jan Akkerman. He plays this difficult piece when slightly drunk and only fluffs a couple of notes.
My early hero. Still playing well into his 70s. A true master
jan akkerman beheerst praktisch ALLE facetten van het snarenspel, niet voor niets is hij tot beste gitarist van de wereld gekozen in de 70- ties
What gibberish is that?
Do you call anything that isn't English gibberish? How ignorant are you exactly?
Absolutely brilliant! :-)
Master on guitar! JAN AKKERMAN!!!
Plays this very well. It's a rough piece and he does it justice.
Akkerman is Fantastic!!!
Even Brian May rates him as a master.
He he he! Yep, Brian (nice guy that he is) couldn't even imagine some of the stuff Jan has done never mind attempt to play it.
Substantiate that statement.
Colin 'Jolly Chap' Taylor Just Google it... it has come into my. "que" MANY TIMES... PERIOD.
I rate him as a master as well ..... smile
in may in june and every other month of the year ...
jan is jantastic !!!
Who's Brian May ?
keep on rocking !!!!!!!!!!!!
Jan and John ....
(Mr Dowland is smiling - wherever he is now)
Wonderful
Great, thank you Jan.
No matter how great the beer, I'd be dead if it meant my life to play this.
Lol...me too but at least we'd go out drinking good beer! 😁
Quite remarkable! Such a well rounded musician in many different genres--and instruments, as seen here.
Indeed. Jan Akkerman is also called 'The Complete Guitarist'. But he can also play the piano, bass and drums.
Thank you for your comment!
They don’t present or play like this anymore.
Thank you verry Dutch
Give me some of that magical Danish beer!
Let's see the other shredders play this! Beautiful.
Jan togheter Page is my favorite guitar player in the history of rock
GRANDE JAN AKKERMAN, CLASSUDO SEMPRE. UM MAGO NA ARTE DAS CORDAS.
Great Focus!

Beautiful Ancestral Europe and Vernacular Music! Great Focus and his fusion:Classical and Rock!
Man That Lute is beautiful I wish I had one

Hij kan ook alles geweldig Jan, een van de meest veelzijdige gitaristen, die alle stijlen kan spelen.
Who remembers him playing this on the OGWT around June 73? A majestic performance - as is this one.
Beautifull. One have to admire his many overal skills at different instruments.
Wonderful ! Thanks for posting :)

turn the 3rd string down to F# and it's not so bad. Otherwise, almost impossible.
Pretty damn amazing...idk if even Bert would have been capable of this and he was by far one of the best of all time...very impressive, indeed 🔥
Absolutely amazing.
I would have loved to have been in that little cafe
Fantastic. Is he one of the great guitarists of the modern era? I don't see Clapton or Van Halen or Vai attempting this stuff

@@karakorum2007 well said 🔥
WOW!
Don't forget that the other man is Stefan Grossman, a great guitarist himself.
They used to have this entire performance, but someone had it taken down. Fire guitarrers! Ah!
It's up again
I love it !!
Great!
My hat's on the floor. Name me a rock guitar player who plays this ?! He is a genius!
Adoro o som do Alaúde!
fantastic !
Im glad that he is inspired by the danish people!? Holy shit im proud xD
Genius
If I'm not mistaken, that's the great Stefan Grossman sitting to JA's left.
He was 27.
Brilliant 👍
I attended one of Jan's performances. Incredible is far too short a rating!

Indeed. Jan Akkerman is always exploring new styles of music and gives his own twist to it. Jan hates consistency. He wants to move on.
Lovely, oh cool :)
Master!!
what CAN'T He play....maestro
With Jan is:-
Bert Jansch
Stefan Grossman
Ralph Mctell
With Stefan Grossman...
Unbeliveable
Awesome! Obviously Classically trained.
I was amazed how subtle those drone strings are (compared with the sitar's drones).
They're not drones, they're used to play individual bass notes. They're intended to have a very short decay.
ever !!!
Steve Hackett plays Classical and Electric guitar superbly, but I don't think ha plays lute as well! This guy is a true genius!
babbbabbel babbel and the beat is going on
Leuk
Beautiful Lute playing, I just wish this recording was in better quality. Jan has always been one of my greatest guitar inspirations of all time. He has accomplished so many amazing things. You Are The Best, Jan. So live forever knowing that. You are the best!!! God Bless.
yup
cool...greetings from 2 musicians (sitar & tanpura) from germany............(maria&harald,the nectar of the night)...
He played that song very well. The lute is not an easy instrument. It's similar to a guitar, has a lot more strings, and the finger plucking is very different. He did good.
Semper Dowland, semper dowlens
I'm glad to be a Dutchmen!
@PricklyPete10 Jan Akkerman is very experienced on the electric and acoustic guitar. But also on the lute. And the lute is extremely difficult to play.
I don't find the Lute more difficult that the Guitar, different but you must remember you only really play on 8 strings.

@PricklyPete10 I know :P
What do you mean - inspired by the danish people? He mentions that Dowland was employed by a danish king - true, for eight years, and weren´t particular happy about it.
Amazing and that by using only 6 of the snares!
the lute is his thing^^
Is that Stefan Grossman?
stefan grossman?
The very beginning reminded me of Bagpuss
Who?
Rock version.....but amazing!
Does this piece appear on any of Jan's records?
Tabernakel
Electric lute?

Am I seeing things, or does that look like a "hoodie" (or whatever it's called elsewhere) that he's wearing?
I didn't think they were around in the 1970s.
oh yes, we soccerplaying hippies all used hoodies, it was called trainingjacks with a capuchon.
Gauntlet , us civilized people don't use that word hoodie
I assure you, there were hooded sweatshirts in the 1970s. We just didn't call them "hoodies" lol
Lute Hero.
insanity
the 2 momo,s :-)
The best guitarist/lutanist of the rock era? I don't hear any contradictions.
When you above the memes.
you above ''the scene''
Er könnte das Telefonbuch
von Amsterdam runtetleiern,
und ich wäre verzückt.
Jan liet ze allemaal staan...
Incredible……!! Is he a guitarist who played hocus-pocus himself!(゜〇゜;)?????
aki Ishi yep
Is he too classical for the guitar polls?
woah my bad, sorry :)
sorry but it is true
That looks like Stefan Grossman.
Sure looks like him
More than that - it is Stefan Crossman! He stayed a while in Denmark at that time, including playing at my highschool.
