    My sons 2000 XJ8 was having the same problem and the dealer wanted $3500 to replace. I pulled and sent the throttle body to be rebuilt. They turned it around in 2 days, I installed the rebuilt unit, settings seemed perfect right out of the box and cleared all the warning lights. I have about $300 into the repair including the new gasket. Running well. appreciate the time you took to do video.

    Thanks for sharing your experience with the dreaded TPS adjustment. However the hard set info is incorrect so permit me to correct the procedure for others who watch this video. Simply disconnecting the battery like you would to replace it does nothing to reset any stored parameters, as there are capacitors in the electric system and their job is to hold a charge. Just disconnect the negative cable and touch the cable to the positive cable for 15 seconds or so. This will provide a path to ground for any charged caps and discharge them. I would clear all codes prior to this procedure then drive the vehicle specifically to run the monitors, which is called a drive cycle. You can google drive cycle for the particular year vehicle and follow the directions. It is best to do this on a cold vehicle that hasn't been started yet, as some monitors won't run unless started cold. It helps to have a scan tool with the ability to not only clear the codes but to also access Mode 6 to check monitor status when you are finished.

    After three years, I tried this and it didn’t fix the problem. Took a chance that it was the Engine Control Module. Ordered one from a jaguar parts dealer for $125, had it installed four days ago, and it fixed my problem. 😁

  • @mooregoodink7734
    @mooregoodink7734 3 года назад

    Hey Billy,
    I admired your pluck. This is an expensive job if taken to a Jaguar dealer, and it defeated two of my local repair shops, both with diagnostic equipment. You mentioned you rotated your repaired TPS counterclockwise, and the engine revved to 5,000rpm. That statement helped determine which way mine should be adjusted. My XJR engine would not idle below 1,200rpm and hunted between there and 1,700. As well as being rough-sounding, it jolted severely while gear changing, and worse, the grip of the rear wheels almost overwhelmed the braking power of the fronts. Getting it stopped was not always a certainty.
    To reduce my engine speed to a normal 700rpm idle required rotating the TPS fully clockwise on the top screw and almost similarly on the lower screw. I tapped the TPS gently using a tiny hammer with a brass rod.
    Your information was invaluable and I’m most grateful to you.
    Cheers, Vic

    I don't have an XK8 But never the less that was VERY interesting to watch, thank you Spa Guy. the more I watch these kind of videos the more it is clear to me, how electronics are very interlinked. but cars least effected are older cars from the late 70's when they first introduced engine management.

    Had a similar experience with my 01 XJR. Sent the TB out for rebuild at ASI, got it back and no paperwork was included for the TPS adjustment with mine, got it emailed the next day when I called to ask about a warranty replacement. Did the TPS adjustment and I got really lucky that it landed in exactly the right spot and I was able to tighten the screws because the screw heads were just about completely stripped bare...I was just able to get a torx bit in there and turn it just hard enough to tighten it. Been good since then, about 5 months and 8000 miles.

    Had a chronic P0121 code on my 2000 XK8. I disconnected both electrical plugs at the throttle body and thoroughly sprayed electrical contact cleaner on the male and female ends of the plugs. I allowed them to dry completely. Replugged the connectors. Problem solved. 400 miles later I’ve never gotten another P0121 code.

    check your air intake hose. Any kind of crack in it will allow air to run past the maf. ANY air that gets in that is not metered will result in failsafe. If you went through the effort of having your throttle body rebuilt, replace the air horn.

    I've had this problem w/ my 2001 XJ-R. Replaced the wiring harness once & that worked for a couple years. Next time I made the mistake of letting dealer replace the throttle body: dealer techs are no longer mechanics; they're just "parts replacement specialists." I'm now having same problem again w/ P1111 and P1121 fault codes. Both are High Voltage faults; former is Intake Air Temperature Sensor(ATS), latter is Throttle Position Sensor(TPS). I'll try cleaning the ATS, per Michael Zak's advice first. I suspect, however, that the TPS problem is a DESIGN fault and that the rebuild recommended here is the solution. I say this because I had an ABS module issue as well, which was the result of too high voltage melting some poor solder joins inside the ABS module. Another RUclipsr showed how to repair those solder joins, not replace the ABS module. Saved me over a grand! Just because automotive electrics are governed by microprocessors now doesn't mean these Brit cars won't have chronic electrical problems. The more things change, the more they remain the same.

  • @MikeZak101

    I had a similar problem on mine but was nothing to do with this and personally i don't think this is the fault with yours as the engine fires and runs, mine was the abs sensors which are mounted on the hub on each wheel, front ones aren't to much of an issue but still worth cleaning, the rears build up with grease and dirt because they are positioned very close to the drive shaft link, i had the same engine warning lights, traction control fail , loss of power as you are having when ever i went over 50 mph
    One of the rears had about 5mm of dirt blocking the signal from the abs rotor, its a very easy job to do your self, it involves removing one wheel at a time which is no big deal, the sensors are mounted on top of each hub with a wire connected to them.
    I cleaned all 4 in under an hour for a total cost of $4 for a can of WD-40 just to help free them up, don't false them as they can be damaged, remove the screw holding them in, if they don't come out easy just spray some WD and leave it for a minute followed by a gently twist until free then simple wipe the signal side with a cloth and reinstall
    The reason is if the abs system fails to receive the pulse signal from one wheel it puts the ecu into fail safe mode shutting it down, it affects the system more at higher speeds over 40 mph as the wheel rotation increases it receives even less signals from one wheel compared to the other in a short amount of time which triggers the fail safe, very common problem on both XK8 XKR XJ8 XJR as they all use the same technology, its been 2 years now, 12000 miles and the fault hasn't returned.

    Was there too. Most of times the connnecting plugs from the vehicle to the throttle body have oxidated too much over the decades.
    BEFORE disassembling anything. Unplug, inspect them and maybe clean them with a watch screw driver carefully. Make sure ALL them connectors do their job properly. Before reconecting. Use a lil dialectric grease on them metallic connectors. Plug them back on. Done!

    It’s correct that my Jaguar garage insisted you couldn’t buy the sensor without the whole throttle body, but I managed to find new (not re-use) sensor replacements on eBay for £65 plus £175 fitting charge. Just checked and new sensors are still available on eBay.

    I head the same issues with my 2001 XJR years ago. All you have to do is clean the inside of the throttle body. Carbon build up gets on the throttle position sensor inside the throttle body. Using carburetor cleaner and a lint free rag, clean the inside of the throttle body. You can do this with the throttle body in place or removed. It’s easier to get to if you remove it but I did this with the throttle body in place. The rag removed a lot of carbon and that problem never reoccurred.

    Cool that you found that yourself, these cars can be a good bit of cash to get worked on. I have a 99XJR and the head gaskets blew last year...tune of $3000 fix. Just had the "amber" failsafe mode pop on me this morning in mine. Drives fine, runs fine, would have never known it was on until I glanced down. SO, I pull out the 'ol manual and it says that the amber light means lowered performance but can still be driven but needs to be looked at, and the "red" alert means to pull over and don't drive. This morning, after I parked the car and came back, the light didn't come on for a while. Stopped at a store and came back out and it wasn't on and didn't come on again. I'm not sure what it is, the car seems to perform fine. I'm just wondering if it might go from the amber alert to red. Guess I need to nip that in the bud. Oh...by the way...I had a problem that took me FOREVER to find out what it was, and I just happened to be in the trunk when it happened and I actually heard what was going on. I had been having intermittent issues with codes popping up from time to time...ABS, Traction Control....all of them would come up at the same time. It usually would happen when I turned on the A/C, or would happen after the A/C ran a while, but would also happen just out of the blue without A/C being on. I even got locked out of the car a few times too and had to get it towed. Problem? Battery ground cable. Believe it or not, it was the ground cable. I had changed out the positive before due to it being corroded, but the ground looked almost brand new, nothing green or anything, good clean connections. But the last time it happened, I noticed that if I messed with the connections on the junction block next to the battery, it would fix it...until it decided to do it again. Then, as I said, I happened to be in the trunk again messing with it after it started its code stuff again...and it was really quiet this time....and I grabbed the ground wire to move it around and I heard a little quiet "snap". Juala...I knew then it was the ground cable. So, changed that, and no more intermittent codes out of nowhere, run A/C all the time, no problems with codes anymore. But...now the failsafe. Guess I need to look into that now...uggg.

    Had same Failsafe problem, I sympathise with all sufferers, sudden loss of power at 80 mph in the outside (fast) lane is frightening! I read up dozens of expensive complicated solutions like this. Bought a new throttle position sensor over a year and 4,000 miles ago.which my Jaguar garage fitted. The only thing that seemed to be a problem was that the idle speed was over 2,000 revs. The sensor had been aligned to the old sensor mark, just needed loosening and readjusting. No problem since.

    I so appreciate this video. I just got my 2000 XK8 back after 8 months in the shop due to hail damage to the body and convertible. The work was substandard and it had to go to another shop for corrections. I have 70k original miles on it and it died yesterday in front of the automotive shop. I had red lights flashing with fail safe mode and transmission failure/fault prompts. I couldn't drive it back home, so I left it. Today, I got an email with a 4k estimate. The throttle body and gasket parts were over $2,900.00 and then there was labor. The balance of the 4K estimate was on a few other issues. This video is over a year old and I'm wondering how the rebuilt part is holding up and did you end up getting the gasket, or did you keep the same one? Thank you!

    But it is really strange..."Failsafe mode" and TRAC and ASCnot available" can come at anytime when you accelerating or on go over a speedhumb.
    When I turn off and on the car the idle goes to 4800 rpm and sometimes it fixes by itself and goes down and runs perfectly.It has smth to do with switching off and on the car...You gotta be patient...

      @MikeZak101 8 лет назад

      more likely your air flow sensor, I fixed mine with a can of electrical contact cleaner, don't use carb cleaner as its to aggressive and it costs the same to use they right stuff for electrical components.
      Remove the senor which is near the air filter box, give the air flow sensor a good spray be careful not to touch the probe as it can be damaged even with careful cleaning, just use the spray, when you remove it you should be able to see up inside it where the board is , there is another sensor up in there to along with the probe at the bottom, allow cleaner to evaporate for a while then reinstall it.
      Pollen builds up over time on them and as they run hot when on it melts the pollen to the sensors giving wrong flow signals as this sensor works with the lambda sensor on the cat, if they receive different signals to each other the engine protects its self with restricted performance, your car will either not go over 3000 rpm or you will feel power a loss in power when it goes over that rev range.

Take connector plug off, look inside the wire end and look for a black or burnt connector, usually on the black wire (ground). It wont be obviouse, but compaired to the other connetor wires on same plug you will notice color difference. U can replace whole connector, but cheap and perminet fix is to just solder wires dirrectly onto the tail light assembly circuit brd. Ive done this on both my cars when they acted up. good luck:)

      +Autry Chambliss This has nothing to do with the engine block; it is an electrical issue. Unsure why you would make your assumption.
