  • Hello everybody and thank you for tuning into FunAhead TV!
In this video, we start the disassembly process of our 2nd gear synchro rebuild project in my 996 Porsche Carrera 4.
This is a common issue that plagues the 996 generation of 911, where the 2nd gear synchro will wear, causing grinding when going into gear, and eventually causing 2nd gear pop out.
This is the 1st part in a series of videos where I’ll be documenting the full process of rebuilding / rejuvenating my transmission to bring 2nd gear back to full health.
Please feel free to comment if you have any questions or want further clarification on steps of the process!
As always, thank you for watching.

Superb! Good for you for having a go! I was looking for info on these transmissions, mine is jumping out of first gear.... I was thinking about pulling it apart myself... I heard somewhere that you need a 17 tonne press to get some of the gears off the shafts along with some heat. I await your next video on this with great anticipation! Love it!

Thank you! Bummer about your car’s first gear. It’s definitely a doable thing to fix if you have the shop resources. Next video coming soon, so you shouldn’t have to wait too much longer!

Remind me…what were the symptoms, if any? You might also look into the shifter and transmission mount.

Grinding going into 2nd gear and occasional difficulty holding 2nd (pop out). Both of those together are symptoms of synchro wear.
