I was at this B&H final and, as a Kent supporter, I thought we had this game in the bag after restricting Somerset to 193. How wrong I was! The two stumpings by Trevor Gard made the difference on the day. Fine work by him.
I haven't seen this match for many years but one thing that always stuck in my mind was the Ellison incident when the ball hit him on the knee. I was an Essex junior member at the time and went to the 2nd round match at Chelmsford v Kent , who scored 274/9 and Essex were cruising to victory with Gooch scoring 122, but they dramatically collapsed and lost by 4 runs. Kent went on to reach the final. 4 days later Essex played Middx in the B and H final and did the same thing when Middx scored a paltry 196 and Essex were 127-1 when Gooch smashed the quicks everywhere in a quick fire 46 (when he was out Essex were 79-1 off 11.4 overs). I went to the final at lords and couldn't believe they lost 2 games in 4 days by collapsing twice.
More than 20 overs left and Graveney reckons Knott has to have a go at 'pretty well everything'. Eh? If he gets his head down he can knock them off in ones and twos.
Kent's quite shocking 'game management' here shows how much the one-day game has moved on. To the point where 'game management' is now sports jargon for playing with common sense. 60 overs is an absolute eternity to get under 200, yet everyone's getting out giving it the kitchen sink. Maddening.
@@randolphreid7614 He did like spinners, and must ave faced a lot of Vic Marks over the years. But if there was ioe man to pace an innings, it would be Tav.
I watched this just to hear the commentary of Benaud and Laker. Sadly missed.

Red ball one day cricket, what great days, remember this day like it was yesterday,
Yes 2 great stumpings, particularly the second. You tend not to see that kind of artistry behind the stumps these days. Take me back in time please 😟
I wonder if anyone could upload highlights of the semi-final when Ian Botham made a brilliant 96 not out.
Oh God I remember this . Big Bird really slaughtered us .
Was Viv trying to keep Tavare in? Two absolute dollies by his standard.

Good to watch.
Why pick deadly Derek and not bowl him at all?
The days of the ubiquitous Peter West. My dad called him Mr Happy because he always looked so miserable.
Ball of the season 10:40
Botham in the semi played a brilliant but restrained 90 odd not out in the semi to get somerset to lords .

Match was reduced to 50 overs, but i get your point, poor innings management
Different era, different times. One day cricket has moved on and changed but game management in Test cricket has reduced in quality.
