    The Tamron zooms for e-mount make a lot of sense for a lot of people with reasonable compromises in exchange for relatively good value and sizes. Tempting at the very least. Yes, I'm sure Nikon and Canon mirrorless users would like to see something like it for their mounts.

      Good news for Nikon users! Nikon and Tamron have partnered up, and they will be selling Nikon branded Tamron lenses. (Meaning the lenses will be made by Tamron, but the lenses will say "Nikon" on them instead of "Tamron."

    Thanks for the (as usual) awesome review. Had this lens since 6 months or so and it has quickly become one of my favorite for overall IQ, sheer portability and AF snappiness. Waited for the Sigma one for years and at some point just got fed up since it seems lost in a limbo, and so far didn’t regret at all to have chosen this one. The only gripe is the lack of VR, I’ve noticed that IBIS is not completely reliable at long FL and attention is required with shutter speed for tack sharp shots.

    This lens has one major disadvatage for video shooters who need manual focusing, because the focus ring doesn’t have linear response and is almost unusable for focus pulling for video. The same applies for the 28-75.

    • @radimpalus
      @radimpalus 3 года назад

      @@JamesClark1991 Thaks for the tip! I ended up using a Sigma Sports 70-200, which is quite ok for focusing and zooming. But You are right, the FD lenses are much smoother and they have one of the best build quality for this purposes. I used to have a bunch of FD lenses in the 90's and then I sold them. I wanted to test them out some years ago and found that it is problematic to combine modern lenses with vintage lenses, as they have a very different look, in terms of contrast, sharpness and color rendition.

    Excellent as always Chris! I'd argue however, that the zoom lock is very important IF you're using a carrying system like Peak Design or Cotton Carrier. I have both, and my Tamron 28-75 has gotten much looser over the 2 years I've had it. Once I start walking, it's only a matter of time before it's fully extended. I'd go so far to say that if they update the lens only with a lock, I'll be trading mine in.

    Hi Christopher, I noticed one issue with this lens when especially paired with the Sony A7Riv, hence why I got rid of the Lens. When using AF-C on the A7Riv, much like the 200-600 Sony Lens, it has a lot of Back-focusing issues and would miss 70% of the shots I was taking on moving subjects, no matter the Aperture or Shutter speed. I also tested it with Object Tracking, Eye and Animal Eye AF but sadly, nothing but back-focus issues.
    The A7iii however, had no issues at all and it appears to only be an issue with the A7Riv which is upsetting, but there had been no fix for it since it's release and I believe it's just an issue with the A7Riv's focusing system, not Tamron themselves. I tested it on the base Firmware and the latest firmware for both the Camera and the Lens.
    Overall I loved the lens and it easily can resolve 60 Megapixels with no loss of Sharpness. The Auto-focus is extremely fast, just the A7Riv lets it down.

    Why it was a no for me even if performing lens: I needed the extra 20mm and the possibility to extend the focal to x1.4 or x2, the stabilization is a big plus over 130mm. I own the tamron 28-70 and I am not fan of it on build quality. I am very happy with my 70-200GM bought at cheaper price but a bit heavy. I guess there is no perfect lens yet 😅

    Tamron has been killing it recently. Their 28-75mm, 28-200mm and 70-180mm offers top tier performance with just mid-tier price and more importantly, mid-tier weight (even if you are very rich it doesn't mean that you have super human strengh and immune to weight). This Tamron lenes are watch draw me to SONY system. Unlike Canon keeps making stunning good lens that are out of reach, this is what people really wants.
    I know many people want these lenes to come to RF mount but I don't think it's going to happen, RF mount is significantly bigger than E mount, which means the optical design has to be different, which also means it's harder to have compact lenes for RF mount. That's just the inherent drawback of Canon system.

    Hi Chris, The price of Sony 70-200mm f/4 G OSS lens has come down to $1300, so would you still recommend Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 that sells for $1200. Earlier the Sony one was more expensive so people preferred Tamron 70-180, but what's the verdict now? I am considering it for my Landscape Photography.

    • @martin9410
      @martin9410 3 года назад +1

      Personally, I think I would go with Sony because of OSS. Believe it or not, it makes a great deal of difference, even when you have stabilization in your camera. You gain 20mm, but of course you lose more light into the lens and it's a bit heavier. Also at least when the Sony lens first came out, there were a lot of owners who found the lens just fell apart in the middle (2 halves), even when there was no hard use. This is actually a tough decision really. I actually went a totally different direction. I already had the Sigma MC-11 adapter (130 dollars) and bought a used Canon 70-200 with IS for about 700. And I have been getting great images on my Sony a7rii.

    The potential release of this lens for Nikon is what would allow me to stay with Nikon as I move from DSLR to mirrorless. If not, I cannot justify staying with Nikon, with no small 70-200ish 2.8 option. Canon's 70-200 2.8 is very close in size to this Tamron, whereas Nikon of course went for as massive and long as lens as possible

      The 70-200 z is freaking amazing. Got mine a couple weeks ago and I’m blown away. Although I can see why somebody would want a smaller package. I shoot at 200 too often to move to a 70-180 and VR is pretty useful at the tele end.

      @@livejames9374 Yeh no doubt it's amazing, but I'm willing to sacrifice a little bit for something 2.8 inches/71mm shorter, 1.21 lb/550 g lighter. I already own the 70-200 VR 3, if I stay with Nikon I'd keep that for action/sports in situations where size and weight doesn't matter. The 70-180 would be used for everything else

    Honestly I don't care if the third party manufactures start making lenses for Canon rf. The adapter works perfectly and if you look at what they're doing with the Sony lenses they're basically just making lenses with the adapters built in which makes them longer when having to travel with them and pack them

    • @realpokski
      @realpokski 3 года назад +4

      Then you haven't paid much attention to newer third party lenses for Sone E. Yes, some of the first Sigma lenses were just the old DSLR lenses with built in adapter. But all Tamron lenses, and newer Sigmas are new mirrorless designs, and most of them are significantly smaller than the older lenses. Like this Tamron lens. Not to mention Samyang who have some amazingly small lenses for Sony E.

      This comment made me laugh hard in 2021! And it was still a joke even if it was years ago! Tamron designed it's emount lenses natively at the very beginning... Even sigma changeed that strategy years ago!
