I like the art style, but I hope whenever SquareEnix decides to remake Final Fantasy VI (SNES’s III), the art style is a mix of Live A Live and Final Fantasy III 3D and Final Fantasy IV 3D that was released for the Nintendo DS.
I just started Live A Live with the caveman chapter. It is a refreshingly charming unique game that does so many little things right that make it a fun experience.
I've truly loved all 3 of the HD-2D games so far, and for different reasons, and man, Live A Live is going to stick with me for a long time. For a lot of reasons, but particularly its approach to storytelling. Like, even if one or two of the chapters don't click with you, they're all short and breezy enough that it won't be long until you're playing a different story that you'll enjoy a lot more. It seriously felt like just about every impression/preview/review I read seemed to gravitate toward different sets of chapters, and my playthrough was similar (Imperial China, Edo Japan, Wild West and Distant Future were definitely my favorites of the initial set). So long as you know going in that you're in for a bunch of short-form stories, there's probably something for everyone here. Really impressive, too, that they generally do a great job of building stakes in a relatively short amount of time, which even a lot of my favorite RPGs of all-time struggle to do. Mild Endgame SPOILER: And the final two chapters are such a neat subversion of expectations even today, with the last one even giving you the option to experience a completely different sequence of events, I can hardly imagine how mind-blowing they would've been to experience completely blind in 1994.
Seeing the likes of Chrono Trigger & Super Mario RPG in the 2D-HD style would be amazing as would 2D-HD remakes of all the older Final Fantasy & Dragon Quest games. Speaking of Dragon Quest in 2D-HD, I cannot wait to try out the upcoming 2D-HD remake of Dragon Quest 3.
Please keep doing these reviews, they are such a treat. Also, for those of you on the fence about this game; if you liked Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Evermore, or the more recent Undertale, this game is for you. 😉
I love it! I do wish some stories could of been longer, but it didn't ruin the experience. I actually think that this game could easily get a sequel with brand new characters and scenarios and be amazing.
Hey Kevin, there’s not many RUclipsr’s whose opinion I particularly care about or necessarily trust, but you are most certainly one of the very few. So please do more reviews, especially for Switch games. I was initially on the fence for this one, but purely on the strength of this review, I’ll now be picking up Live A Live.
I’m so glad someone is finally reviewing this game. I’m still on the fence about this one, I’m working on the western chapter and it’s kind of hard in the final battle. We’ll see, but thank you for the review!
Actually, when he starts charging Gatling Barrage, the bar that indicates how long it is until his next turn becomes orange, which means he is charging a move. Thus, try to move when you see it. (ik you probably beat it already but it took me a good while to understand the bar)
Great video, Kevin! Live A Live is a gorgeous, and weird game that is definitely worth anyone who's into JRPGs to check out. I never played the original, but the early trailer gave me some big Chrono Trigger vibes, lol definitely not on par with Chrono Trigger though, but not much ever is.
The second I watched the trailer in the Nintendo Direct I new I had to pick it up, it’s a wonderful game and I love it to Death. If you are thinking about getting please do you will not regret it.
SE keeps on cranking them out far more than I can keep up with! I feel like a kid in a candy store.. Kinda got my hands full with Triangle & Octopath right now however than think about going on to this.. Unpopular opinion but I don’t think every new release needs to be HD2D.. If they overdo this style it’d definitely lose its appeal.. It does fit certain titles tho like the aforementioned..
The short chapters are especailly replayable for me, especially when you find out that events can play out differently, and give you some powerful items & accessories to take into the final battles, and even different endings to those scenarios. Bringing down the difficulty from the original SFC version really helped this game's appeal IMO. There are a lot of "dead ends", battle-wise, where if you don't grind levels enough, or if you don't get that magical flash of insight that tells you what conditions make your useless skills useful and vice versa, you're stuck trying the same battles over and over until you either out-grind the strategy, or get a lucky hit in.
I was able to get the final true ending but replayed and some endings just blew my mind. SPOILERS One of the bad endings: On the bad ending when you play as Osterid, in the prehistoric fights with the main characters, playing as the boss, you can cause Armageddon. Which basically Exodia the whole game, meaning all universes are destroyed. I was was playing this in the dark and thats surprised me
Picked this and xenoblade chronicles 3 up on Friday. I haven’t tried this game yet I was to excited for XC3 but i will get to live alive soon. Still need to pick up the new kirby too i just wish Nintendo’s first party games would get cheaper over time it could be 4 years old and it might be 5-10 cheaper when sony or Microsoft games might be $15 overall. And I forgot how much longer the battery last compared to the steam deck i played for awhile and I thought my battery has to be dead it was at 52% and man i wish the steam deck had an oled screen i would payed more for one.
The HD2D art style gets better every time they use it. Which hopefully means it’ll look even better when DQ III comes out.
I like the art style, but I hope whenever SquareEnix decides to remake Final Fantasy VI (SNES’s III), the art style is a mix of Live A Live and Final Fantasy III 3D and Final Fantasy IV 3D that was released for the Nintendo DS.
looks like your wish came true
This game shows that we need more golden era jrpgs remade in this visual style.
Looks great.
The last battle when you get the true ending was such a profound moment and truly made this game great to me.
Keep up the game reviews, I really like them! you're one of the only guys who covers these big-but-not-huge rpgs
I want this HD-2D remake for Chrono Trigger and Terranigma!
I just started Live A Live with the caveman chapter. It is a refreshingly charming unique game that does so many little things right that make it a fun experience.
I went from Distant Future to Prehistory and it's almost like a completely different game.
So glad this game got a 2nd life (no pun intended)

It’s amazing hopefully we get Chrono trigger and Mario rpg in this hd-2d style as well.
Both would be amazing!
i think square wants a piece of the pie for super mario rpg

@@ShanGamer1981 They deserve it. They were the ones who actually made that Masterpiece of a game.
Chrono Trigger would make sense, but Mario RPG's artstyle would be ruined with HD-2D
I love these game reviews. I can tell you're really passionate about the games and it makes it very fun to watch!
Octopath Traveler was amazing.
Triangle Strategy was brilliant.
I cannot wait to try out Live A Live.

Im on the Edo time now. Finished Prehistoric and Imperial. At the moment the one I love most is the Imperial. Its a beautiful game, indeed.
Imperial threw me for a loop with how they presented the story in it, was really nice
I love it! I do wish some stories could of been longer, but it didn't ruin the experience. I actually think that this game could easily get a sequel with brand new characters and scenarios and be amazing.

I agree, Live A Live definitely gives quite an exquisitely unique experience, and I thoroughly enjoyed it!
RUclips didn’t notify me, I saw your post on Twitter. I’m super excited to finish playing this after playing the demo!
Playing it right now and I am loving it. So unique.
I really like the way you review games! Live A Live looks really fun and interesting!
This game is pretty high up on my list of games to check out. This review bumped it a bit higher haha.
I just bet the 8th chapter last night. The ending was very interesting. 23hr into the game and so far my favorite chapter was the cave man one.
You are the best, Kevin. Top-notch as usual!
The crunchyroll ads about this 😭
That conclusion of your was unexpected! May definitely have to check it out now.
I’m so glad someone is finally reviewing this game. I’m still on the fence about this one, I’m working on the western chapter and it’s kind of hard in the final battle. We’ll see, but thank you for the review!
You just have to stay as far away from the gatling gun guy as possible and hit him with ranged attacks
when the boss does a warning shot, is a warning so move away of his range and you are done
Actually, when he starts charging Gatling Barrage, the bar that indicates how long it is until his next turn becomes orange, which means he is charging a move.
Thus, try to move when you see it.
(ik you probably beat it already but it took me a good while to understand the bar)
@@penitente3337 oh l didn't know, l was talking with the original game experience so l forgot charge bars are a thing now
@@peste4592 The original's gatling barrage can only be shot diagonally, the moment you get on his side it'll do nothing.
Without spoiling anything, the later parts of the game are really interesting.
Playing the demo for a while and the Edo Japan chapter was a lot of fun. Def will be getting this game.
Awesome GB shirt 👍🏻👍🏻
Love the RPG reviews Kevin. Keep them coming!

Okay thanks 😊
Played the demo and enjoyed it so I bought it physical.
I'm going to wait for the price to come down, before picking up a copy.
Grab the game. Worth it 💯

Does Live A Live have random encounters for it's combat?
Kevin do you prefer your Switch OLED or Steam Deck for JRPG's?
give me BAHAMUT LAGOON next please
Seriously
Make an update video of all the binbok joycons aviable
5:58... I had fun with myself once.
Where are the apple reviews on your channel?
It’s such a strange bizarre great game
Why get the Switch version over the cheaper original version?
Is there any Story Spoilers in this video? Please say there isnt
Awesome review Kevin!
Dude still won’t lose the beanie even though it’s 110 degrees out…
1:00 isn’t Live A Live about seven characters..?
Yes, but he says you unlock the 8th after finishing the other 7.
Live-A-Live or is it Live-A-Evil in disguise…
Live A Live is a Living Dreams
No one even talks about the gameplay or has it showcased really, which is why I wasn’t interested
Why do u not say the I’m Kevin Cean and I’ll see u all next time three years ago beatemups said that If u remember
I dont get that sorry
Ummm I don’t get that and I can’t
And how did I win for just a comment
