I remember the Summit Diner well. We ate there every weekend on our way to visit family. They were known for their French fries and gravy. The whole community gathered there and the camaraderie of the patrons sharing a cup of coffee or eating a dinner was always very close. I remember two waitresses that were so kind and ran the place well....Dorothy and Peg. We loved that place, and it will be fondly remembered as a hometown diner, full of bar stool stories over a plate of delicious food. Vintage for sure.....
Found a write up from '99 about this place: www.roadtripamerica.com/eats/summit.htm And another site claiming it closed around 2008: www.roadarch.com/diners/pa.html (at the bottom of the page.)
REMEMBER THAT PLACE! I had a friend who lived in the area and we ate there many times. As I recall they served some great diner food and had friendly waitresses. So much better than cookie cutter chain places.
was born and raised in summit twp, went to the summit diner when i was a teenager many times,it was a nice little place to sit and eat and talk to the people. was very sad to see it close. i still live nearby and always go past it on 422 and still say today that i wish someone would open it back up and i would love to cook there.
Old Summit Diner..can still remember Dad taking us there after church at St Wendelins then to there for lunch most sundays and early mornings during hunting season ...thank you for the awesome memories
My aunt used to run this place when I was a kid. Like 3-5 years old. They used to do car cruises on the weekends, and we were there almost every Sunday. She passed away this year, and she always talked about missing it. Sad to see it like this.
My aunt and uncle owned this diner- summit diner- in the 90's. They had great food but there just wasnt enough business and it needed alot of updates that were more costly than the revenue it was producing. They sold the diner and I dont think it was open much after that, if at all.
It’s always been called the Summit Diner since my dad can remember & it’s been closed for several years. My dad & a friend of his went in there once in the 70s when it was open & he said it was a dive. He said the inside was gross. He said him & his friend went to the bathroom, washed their hands & left it was that gross. It looks like it was open only for breakfast in the last days. You can see where they added the bathroom on cuz the color scheme is a little off & lighter colored.
Good ole Summit Diner. I remember my dad taking me in there a few times when I was young for breakfast during hunting season. It really is a shame it sits abandoned like this now.
That's across the street from my house, it's owned by Steinheiser gas now. I went there a lot when I was a kid. There and Morgan's diner which got moved to Erie by Waldermer Amusement park. It's also a dining car and is still functional.
My mother-in-law worked here for years. She supported her 5 kids working here after her husband passed away. My husband and I live just up the road, literally a walk from here. We live on the property where she raised her kids. She would walk here daily and work and then walk home. They had the best pies. A lady made pies every day to serve. They waitressed and cooked for you. Had great food. Breakfasts were amazing good diner food. They have not been open for decades which is a shame. Love these old diners. Some people different times wanted to fix it up and reopen it but the owners wanted way too much to make it practical to buy it and fix it up, so it never happened. The basement has so much mold in it, it would take a lot of work to get this back into working condition. Shame, as it is one of a kind any more. So few still survive. 422 is a very busy road and I can't help but feel it could do well now a days. There is much more traffic out this way now than there used to be. I hate watching it waste away. The new owners of the property have no interest in doing anything with the diner and will let it rot away until there is nothing left. They want to park trucks there behind it so don't care about the diner. If any one has lots of money they want to invest maybe you could talk to the owners and reopen it. I would love to see it open again.
This building is amazing! That entrance is so retro. If you’re in the areas, stop by the Lawrence Park Dinor in Erie (great breakfast and hamburgers). There’s also a great one in old downtown Athens, Ohio still in business.
this reminds me of a straight off diner in marshall's creek pa. pretty much right across the road from the old pocono bazzar flea market location. the diner is now closed sadly. but i took a trip out there, looking at the old unity house resort location, got stuck out there and you know. but diners are hard to find now, and always had the best foods too.
I love old diners like that. I have a friend that has a diner like that in Huntington Co. Pennsylvania. It is up and still running strong. The name of it is Tops Diner. You should check it out if you ever get in that area.
Truckers used to call it the greasy spoon good home cooked meals and cheap my dad use to take us there been closed for years the owner also owns the gas station next to it. I live right up over the hill fromit now
I was just there today, and the only thing different is the pitcher and plated in the foreground are gone. I also read that it was purchased and the new owner was going to move it to Kensington(?) to be restored.
Sad to see this closed😕stopped many times for a bite to eat back in late 80s in my former truck driving days.US.422 a busy trucking route in Ohio and Pennsylvania. The famous Downingtown Diner on US 30 from the original Blob movie in SE.Pa.is my favorite still operating diner for the Blue Plate special🍽☕Nice find Wallie👌
Nice find. I'm sure this place had some food . It is ashame that this place has went down hill. I wish someone could have bought this place and kept the history alive. Dang that is a humdinger of a gas tank.
Great job man! Did you know that Sears announced the closure of over 100 stores? The Sears at the Arbor Place Mall in Douglasville, Ga that it's affected. I will try to film it when school gets out for break. I will try to get more videos out but my editor it's acting up. Great work as always! Stay Awesome Wallie and Kayla!
I grew up there but don't remember this one, I do remember a Trailer looking Diner in the City of Butler, I was maybe 8 the last time I was in it so My memory is a little foggy. There was a smoke shop near it that had Comic Books, I wonder if anyone remembers the place I'm thinking of, My Grandfather would take Me there and eat Chili Dogs, early 70s!!
I have photos I took of the inside and the basement. Took the photos about 2 years ago (so around 2021 ish). Back door wasn’t secured so I just went on in. Really wish RUclips allowed you to add photos to comments.
I did the payroll for this diner for quite sometime in the early 2000's. Ed Widenhofer, who is now deceased, owned the diner. I can't for the life of me remember the name of the husband & wife that ran the restaurant until shortly after Ed's death. I know her first name was Debbie. (if I think of it later, I will post it) From what I understood at the time of the closing, Ed's family inherited the diner from Ed's estate & with trying to run the gas station & little store, beside it, decided to close the diner.
Maybe being so unknown has been a blessing. You notice how it's not been pillaged, tagged, and vandalized in the long time (1999) that it's been closed. Not even the lace curtains are ripped! Almost looks like a giant weed whacker on the weekend, and you could be back in business! 6:36 I can only imagine the cook dinging the bell while saying "Order up!" 🍽️ Joyce the waitress ready to get you a refill! ☕ I miss places like these!
My step uncle started out as a cook in that place, then later moved up to manager, After his boss passed away from a Motor bike accident. The biker left but was later found in a garage smoking weed. I still have some Menu's from there.
Yes it was the summit diner it's been closed since the 90s i stopped there a while back to check it out but didn't film it hey another place you should checl out is sky motel in mt chestnut it's out toward the big butler fair ground it's a small white building you can't miss it and from what i understand is it never opened not sure could not find info on it
You should see it now i drive past it everyday going to and from work i guess it went up for auction on eBay someone bought it and they took all the stainless and useable items to new ken for a ice cream shop amd i guess the building is beyond repair its all boarded up now
I am sorry, I don't know why, but those melted fan blades REALLY give me the creeps. They always have. I literally got chills watching the video and seeing them like that. I know that it probably seems weird. I just wish I knew HOW they get like that in the first place.
Yes! I explored the Crossroads Diner in New Jersey back in May. That was one I could get inside and explore. It was recently relocated and will be getting renovated and reopened!

My very first job - I worked there for years, Family owned - very friendly place to work, The food was always homemade and tasty. Great memories
It’s called summit diner it was moved there in 1963 from Pittsburgh pa and closed around 1999

I love how the curtains look so perfect, they really make the shot. It would still look cool without them, they just add so much to the look.
REMEMBER THAT PLACE! I had a friend who lived in the area and we ate there many times. As I recall they served some great diner food and had friendly waitresses. So much better than cookie cutter chain places.
Drew K most the time hole in the wall places like this usually do have the best food around.

I wish someone would save this diner. It's a shame that it has been abandoned for like 20 years.
I remember that program about Diners back in 93 , really great episode Wallie , brought back memories.
My aunt used to run this place when I was a kid. Like 3-5 years old. They used to do car cruises on the weekends, and we were there almost every Sunday. She passed away this year, and she always talked about missing it. Sad to see it like this.
What a fantastic video, I love to see vintage diners like this one,a great page in history, thanks for sharing this video, stay awesome, take care
Excellent find... So cool to see everything pretty much still there.
Wow! Very cool video. It really is too bad its forgotten. Thanks Wallie!
Thank you! I agree. It's a shame. I would definitely have given this place my business!
Your research skills are excellent Wallie, I don't know how you found that old video clip. Keep up the good work!

I don’t blame him for not wanting to stay if it’s not clean inside. That would turn me off from going their to eat to.
ew lol

Hey Wallie I’m a big fan keep up the great work
Thank you so much! I'll try my best! Haha
I remember Summit Diner!! Its a shame that we've lost so many truly local spots in the area. Great vidya...

Ah, the old Summit Diner. My hubby grew up near here. Not sure when it closed. Thanks for exploring this place and for sharing this video!
Such an amazing classic look. Gotta love a look like that 😀
I love these vintage diners. I've always been fascinated with them even when I was a kid!
@@WallieB26 absolutely. Definitely had some classic places like that where I live
Rick Sebak rocks!
Used to go there all the time with my Dad after hunting. Best burgers ever!! So sad to see the state that it's in. Many, many fond memories!!

Wow! I love the design of this place. Wow that is one huge gas tank.
Great find ! There's an abandoned diner worth checking out in Middletown , PA .
this reminds me of a straight off diner in marshall's creek pa. pretty much right across the road from the old pocono bazzar flea market location. the diner is now closed sadly. but i took a trip out there, looking at the old unity house resort location, got stuck out there and you know. but diners are hard to find now, and always had the best foods too.
It's owned by the adjacent C-store and I inquired about leasing it years ago. Too many upgrades to bring it up to code including ADA access.

No food there but that's a real vintage diner.
Cool little dinner
Now this looks Fun
Look like no getting an hot beef and gravy with mashed potatoes dinner there let alone an omelet or an cheeseburger. Cool roadside explore!
