Absolutely awesome locomotive to acquire for your collection. I just love the sound of that horn!! Love the new logo and the video before the review. You should definitely tag this before every item review you post!!!
Well even with it's faults that's a nice find Nick! F40's were an interesting step along the way for Amtrak, as I recall since the prime movers had to always be at top RPM's to produce the head-end power the F40's got the nickname "Screamers!" You can still find F40's in service on New York State's Metro-North system and NJ Transit still has two in service that run on an as-needed basis. Traction tire troubles? You know, if any of my engines don't miss the traction tires if they fall off or wear out I just leave them off! I don't like the things to begin with. Always fun watching you so thanks for posting!
I got a locomotive about like that from my HO days in the 1980s. Nice to see you own more Amtrak. Amtrak is a rail line I definitely need more pieces of in my collection. Ken
Great addition for you're collection Nick. Good information on its history. Another interesting story to note that might coincidence with Amtrack's use for the F units is that Santa Fe was one of the few roads still providing passenger service besides Amtrack, and they requested EMD to build the FP45's exclusively for their passenger service. It was identical in every other way to the SD45 except for the car body. They believed that their passenger engines should not have external railings, platforms, or porches and thought they should have a streamlined exterior like the original passenger engines and even painted them in the Warbonnet paint scheme. I guess some of the livery"s weren't always just concerned about economics, or were they? Makes you wonder sometimes how much the hobby is set back because of the need for the real world to make a buck😊. I found a good use for Bullfrog snot. It did a good job of gluing my traction tires on an engine that kept throwing off a couple of new traction tires on the same two wheels every time I ran it. I bought this engine used, and it was missing two traction tires. I've always wondered every since if the grooves were compromised, running the engine for any length of time without tires. The guy was pretty old, and that's saying something because I just turned 70. Hard telling how long he ran it that way. I doubt he even realized they were missing. Is your new engine equipped with Bluetooth? They can be run with the universal remote or the app without having the legacy remote or command base, but you won't have all the features.
Awesome review Nick! I enjoyed listening to the history F40PH. I own one of the models but, in the Ph. III scheme. Lionel really did a nice job on these models. Lionel rates the model for O54 minimum curve but I am able to run mine on O36 using the short MTH RailKing 15 1/2" Amtrak cars. I do like the sounds on this locomotive. It looked great running on your railroad. Thanks Nick! Bill B.
I never saw phase 4 on the keystone corridor when I would visit my grandparents in Mt Joy 4 or 5 times a year from 1988 to 2001. I saw E-60, 1 Pepsi can, 1 gp38, and lots of phase 3 and genesis and aem-7.
Very nice. The F40PH was and is a neat locomotive. You can still see the Cabbage's in Chicago, mostly on the trains going east up the Michigan Line at Porter. I'm sure that they still use them going west on the short runs, also. I also liked the old P30CH, 'Pooch' units, from back in the day. Very nice little units. Once again, crew talk is a real downer, for everything that you mentioned. Also, a dispatcher cannot tell you an aspect, they just tell you signal indication, as their screen just shows if you are lined-up or not. Also, I believe that the FRA forbids them from even hinting at an aspect, if they could actually know it. Either way, the number one bell always sounds the most realistic, nice sound and not clanky or muted. The number one horn is almost always the best and most prototypical. Aside from some of the drawbacks, it is a very nice engine. As always, a fine review and video.
Excellent review Nick!! The history on the F4PH was very interesting to learn about. It also was very pleasing to the eye. It has beautiful lines to it. The Lionel Legacy Amtrak is no different. It’s a beautiful locomotive. It looks and sounds great!! Great review my friend! Tom
Great review and really nice engine. I agree they could have added a little more detail in the vents and fans, but the lighted cab looks good and the rest of it impressive.
Hay Nick I have to down size my layout could you tell the width & length of your layout really don't want to shelf queens on my O72 locomotives really enjoy your show
I have a question on any engine I guess diesel or steam when your running your engine when it quits putting out smoke do you have 2 put more smoke fluid in so it doesn't burn up or out? Or it's ok 2 keep running I'm building a layout don't know anything on these newer engines I've only have older stuff from when i was a kid
What a fantastic review Nick! 👍
Thank you so much!
I used to see the F40ph a lot on Amtrak trains through Richmond, VA a lot back in the '80s and '90s

Thanks for the video Nick. Wish some of the details were a little better for you but still not a bad looking locomotive. Enjoy!

Awesome diesel, I enjoyed seeing it on Tuesday's Live as well. You could probably come up with a horn song.
