Nintendo Wii U - Disassembly, Cleaning, Assembly, and Polishing

- I got this Wii U Console off of eBay and while it did work, it was pretty gross. In this video we take the console completely apart, clean up the plastics, motherboard, and metal, reassemble the console, then give a good polishing.
The Wii U console isn't terribly hard to get into and put back together, but it does take some time and has about 25 screws(about 6 different variations). The antenna runs can be a bit a tricky too. If you are concerned your console might be clogged with grossness, this is a solid guide to getting in there and preventing issues before they start.
The whole job: 6/10.

Fantastic detail. Thanks. My only note for others is not to pry off the heatsink. Twist it gently to break the seal then it lifts right off.
Noted! I appreciate the advice!
I think that would deform the thermal pad.
I gotta say, this is by far the best disassembly video on a game console, it was very easy to follow, it took me approximately and hour and a half, to do everything you did. And I loved the silence on the video. You got youself a new subscriber. The 200th to be exactly. Thank you!!
thanks! I really appreciate that. More content coming soon!
Greatest in-depth view of the Wii U, I was watching this because I have a Wii U myself and I plan on cleaning it inside out and this is what I needed to watch.
Thanks so much!
What an overly complicated system, glad I never took mine apart.
This would be watched x100 times more if Wii U was sold like Wii's. But one of the best Wii U content and it is free. Thank you.
Great tutorial. My Wii U is in good condition but I wanted to see the disassembly from a professional 😅
Just came across this video since I found my Wii U collecting dust and decided to mod it and clean it up so it looks respectable in the living room. I love this detailed video and your channel name slaps. I subbed and look forward to more awesome vids man! Keep it up!
thank you for going into detail because the teardown & assembly would’ve taken a lot longer without your video. thx bro
Dude, that's a great compliment. Thanks! Glad I could help!
@@consoloscopy keep it up bro!👍
Just cleaned out two overheating Wii U thanks to this perfectly detailed video. Thank you very much
that's great! I love to hear it. I have a Wii U Gamepad vid dropping in the next week or two.
the rubber pieces protruding are to ensure the vents aren't blocked. The back part for the fan has that safety "built-in" by the mandatory cables which will connect around it, ensuring fan will have room for air to flow, but the side of the exhaust needs those pieces
The rubber pieces actually fit into the Wii U's stand
Thank you for the detailed video!
You are quite welcome!
Make sure you remove the SD card first... as with anything but i love videos like this so chill, knowledgeable and satisfying to watch. No fluff or nonsense!
Thank you! Awesome tutorial
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed!
very cool. thank you! between this and the regular wii, nintendo did a great job of discouraging hard modding.
lol, yes and no. It's not THAT hard to get in there. But soft mods are the way to go anyway.
great video .. thank you so much !!!!
Hola, disculpa me podrías decirlas medidas del thermal pad es que quiero limpiar la mía pero no se de cual comprar o que medidas tiene para poder comprarla.
Love your logo and intro animation.
Ah thank you!
Send this man few boxes of Q-tips :D I kid, great video!
lol. I go through A LOT of them.
Thank you so much I cleaned my White Wii U now.👍
Hell yeah, dude!
Lol! I forgot to flick the clip back on the ribbon for the face of the console. Wondered why the buttons won’t work 😂 thanks 👋
lol oops!
Such an unappreciated console. I've recently bought one on the cheap and I haven't been able to put it down for a good while.
What type of screws?
Those “little guys” tabs that you didn’t know what they were for… are for the vertical stand brackets
great easy to follow! only thing im missing is the money to buy a wii u
Great video and great name for your channel
Thanks lol!
@@consoloscopy are you looking for a sponsor?
@@consoloscopy i also saw you are a video editor by trade. I am currently looking for someone who would edit our videos. Would you be interested?
@@fasttechvideo Not actively looking necessarily but open to options.
Btw, just looked at your channel and it's good stuff. You know the grind. Respect.
Hi, amazing video it is such a complicated console . In my case my WiiU got fried during a storm last month and I have been looking for
Guide on how to fix it. I suppose I need to swap the power supply so I will buy probably a new block. Are there any tips you have for a guy that wants to start with cleaning and fixing consoles?
Nice
I recently bought a Wii U and I was wondering if you would have any tips on how to clean stains off the Wii U gamepad? Back is very dirty with sweat and everything and i can’t get it off
Honestly, I'd try that polish I used first. I'm not sure about stains on plastic like that unless you de-color it with peroxide and UV lights. There's a lot of guides for that on RUclips.
38:41 the only mistake i found during the assembly process. Those rubber pieces go on the other plastic cover with the 45° mark looking down. That's because it needs to slide into the other plastic cover. The rest of the process is beyond perfect!
Rats. Yeah. You are right. Thanks for that! I appreciate the compliment and the critique!
i have like 3 screws left and i dont get what i did wrong
Eres un crack🤘🤘, me olvidé como armar mi consola después de cambiarle la pasta térmica y no me sobró pero que ningún tornillo 🤘🤘🤘
Thanks, I think!
really good and detailed video. The only question I have is, would it have made sense to replace the thermal pad with new quality thermal paste? Will carry out repair and maintenance processes myself using the video, thank you very much.
I hope it goes well for you! Yeah, I coulda changed the thermal paste. I intended to but you can see the scratch in the thermal paste, that was from when I tried to pry it off. However the thermal pad was not in tact and didn't peel off easily at all. It looked good so I left it. Good practice is to swap it out though.
Is there any way to clean the side air filters without needing to disassemble the whole thing?
I don't actually know but I imagine that would be fairly unsafe. You can try some cotton swabs and IPA and try not to let it drip too much into the inside. For a real cleanin', I'd open it up.
Do i need to buy a hdmi cable for the wii u i have a newer tv?
Yeah, if your tv has an HDMI input. Or you can buy component cables if your tv only has component cable inputs. But HDMI is preferred.
Do you have any suggestions on how to fix the “cannot read disc” error? I’m having trouble with this on my Wii U.
Maybe if you dismantle the disc drive and really give it a good cleaning. Otherwise, probably a replacement disc drive.
@@ColtinCalloway ok I’ll give it a try one day, thanks 👍
This video is a winner winner, chicken dinner.
Getting ready to do this with one I bought online. I think I'm going to start with the polish on the outside first, that way if some gets inside, I'll get it when I disassemble. Wasn't sure if that was an afterthought for you. Looked like some polish got into the vents.
Yeah, that's probably the right choice. Polish first.
My Wii U doesn't even attempt to turn on. Capacitors, coils and fuse, correct. Any ideas?
Man, it could be anything. Power source would be my first guess.
@@consoloscopy Thanks, but it's the first thing I checked, it's correct. I have also tried to apply voltage with a laboratory power supply and the voltage comes on, I think that some IC or transistor must have gone, but breaking a console while it is not in use just like that sounds like a laugh on the part of Nintendo and the client. Now on top of that they don't even admit them for repair even if you pay. I have a Sony PS2 working without problem since 2003.
Hey did you reapply thermal paste?
Didn't need to. The thermal pad was still intact.
Little question here what happens if I have 3 leftover screws and 1 possible extra that fell on the floor.
That's no good. But if it still turns on, I guess you are good to go?
HELPPP SAME
At least you cleaned up way better than what DKOldies will ever do.
Why did you not re-paste the CPU
Not sure why I didn't mention or emphasis it in the video, but there was a thermal pad on the CPU already. I had to one ready to replace it ahead of time but this one still looked fine and didn't want to come off very easily so I left it on. Sorry about lack of clarity on that. When I saw this comment I was like, wait, did I NOT do that!? Went back and reviewed the raw footage and sure enough there's a thermal pad. Sorry about the confusion!
You used 70% IPA to clean the board? Is that safe due to the water content? I usually see people using 99% IPA for that purpose.
Worked fine. I had the 99% option but 70% is okay to my knowledge.
I’m watching this just to get a quarter out of one of the card slots on the face because my deadbeat cousin thought it’d be funny to mess with my console collection.
lol. Hey, I'll take a view any way I can get it!
I took mine apart and I regret it now everything is not right 😂
What if we don't have a tri tip.
You'll need one of those.
algorithm
im gonna try to hide away a 2.5in drive inside the wiiu shell
I'd say there's room.
Gotta be the worst console to disassemble
I don't know. The antennas are annoying to run but it's not terrible.
The fat 360 is ridiculous, it took me an hour just to get past all the plastic clips/snaps. This one doesn't look too fun either with all the hidden screws😢😅
@@mrbungle589 Just go slooowwww. You got this!
This should have been called the mii and not the wii. It focuses on a personal game pad where as the wii wad for the family or friends. Total miss step by nentendo cause the wii u is a lame name. The wii and wii u are so similar it's crazy and it's why nentendo sales were dismal compared to the predecessor wii. Wii was so fun back then when was sweeping the nation and did 100million units
I have two Wii U's. Mine is in good impeccable condition but the ones I had gave my children they got it so dirty. I was going to take it apart but after watching this video I'm thinking I'm just going to send it to someone, it's way too much and I don't have the patience for it
