Very forward thinking of them to use vector graphics so that this all scales beautifully even on a modern display with much higher resolution than would have been common then. Bob isn't that far removed from the modern "App" experience really, more patronising and quaint, but the basic concepts aren't that far off.
It’s a very charming software. Maybe if it was free instead of Microsoft charging for it, it would’ve been more fondly looked at.
I still believe in MS Bob. We need a reboot for the Windows Store.
f r i c k y e s
seriously, good idea.
for free doe
ya
yes the idea was cool but the way they did it was bad so having a remade version is a good idea
I feel it would be cool as like a little novelty life simulator
also i want microsoft bob to be on xbox
This is one of the most hilarious videos I've ever seen. Love your style.
Thank you!
hi michel mjd
"Utopia" was the codename for "Bob".
haha boy were they wrong
they wasted the name microsoft utopia on a bad program
I think you need to add C:\MSBOB to PATH in environment variable settings in advanced system settings
Exactly thats the solution. A 16-bit setup uses the wrong way to add to PATH (it uses AUTOEXEC.BAT, which does not work on Windows 10 of course ;) )
you guys code in python i switched to bob best programming language
Flashlight Bob is not a coding language
Its-a me, PROBLEM! Actually I believe it may have been an autocorrect. On my end sorry about that but if ya didn’t know I actually am smart I just wanted to clarify that
Why hasn't Michael done this yet?
MJD, I discovered your channel just recently, and have enjoyed a bunch of your videos. This one was hilarious! When you stacked all the programs in a big pile at the end I just cracked up :-D
I love how soothing your voice is combined with the smooth jazz.
When you put all the .dll files in the "home" directory, you in effect mimicked the MS-DOS PATH command. MS Bob may have set up a MS-DOS PATH command that would allow to search the associated folders (directories in MS-DOS terminology). Usually these were in AUTOEXEC.BAT files, which stored the PATH command directory search. If they were in the C:\ root directory, on bootup it would read the AUTOEXEC.BAT and set the parameters and could launch a program .EXE. Config.sys was also another system file that was read on boot up, which set memory limits etc. My first PC operating system was MS-DOS 1.1.
Installation issues were common even on Win 3.1 and Windows 95. It wasn't uncommon for something to be borked and you'd have to re-install the whole thing several times.
Yea because I always wanted a guy called Bob living in my PC for free.
Like pay rent at least.
RealistikDash Bob is a squatter.
He could pay rent by mining coins.
lol your funny
bob is lori's boyfriend
......
......
k ill stop
@@cyberp0et Hello remember me?
The DLL thing is probably either a path issue, as some have mentioned, or due to changes in where Windows accepts DLL's in relation to their executable (there were some changes to this sometime around Vista for security reasons)
That’s not Comic Sans, that’s Dom Casual.
God I need a casual dom in my life
Just think of what you could have learned instead of learning the difference between Comic Sans and Dom Casual.
@@billcook4768 I stand by my choices.
At 2:00, he said it wrongly, it was actually the typeface called Dom Casual! "My bad." - Michael MJD
Fun Fact: The original Dom Casual was created by a font foundry. Bitstream added italics to its version of Dom Casual, totaling four font styles in all!
About the DLL Errors, Instead of copying everything, I think you can just make a shortcut with the "Target" pointing to the "HOME.EXE" file (or what the starter program is) and the "Working Directory" / "Start At" pointing to the MsBob root installation folder. But IDK, I haven't tried it yet on Bob, But some program having this kind of errors can be resolved like that.
And to make it run after you logged in, you can just put the shortcut into "shell:startup" folder.
I recently installed Ms Office 97 on my windows 10 pc for fun, and it worked just fine.
I installed MS Word 4.0, Didn't work so well.
If you added the MSBOB folder to your PATH environmental variable, that probably would have fixed the issue of the programs not finding the dlls
Yep, I'm thinking the same, I'm going to try it myself.
Try running Microsoft 3D Movie Maker on Windows 10.
TehMondasianSpartan I know it works on Windows 7.
but you can find microsoft 3d movie maker
search on google
I believe I downloaded it from the Internet Archive and burned it to a CD.
SPOILER ALERT: it works on windows 10. I tried it
If you want a video editor, there is a version at sourceforge.net called Shotcut.
It takes some getting used to and sometimes, it crashes.
I think BOB was a brilliant idea that was perfect for the time period but marketed poorly. Imagine if BOB had caught on with kids, and new to PC users who would otherwise be intimidated by the Windows GUI.
@RogerWilco99 PC graphics from that era did look cartoon like for sure. With a modern appearance that's customizable for young users and adults, I think it could have done far better.

Ha. I have a copy of Microsoft Bob sitting in my home office. I was always too sentimental to trash it. Now I'm hoping to sell it on Ebay for beer money.
what happens if you are too young by putting a year birth between 2007 and 2020 on MS Bob?
8:06
Windows CE Error sound
can you run crysis from BOB?
nikoskokonos13 yes
You'd be surprised what still works in Windows 32-bit
adding MSBOB's instalation folder to the PATH environement variable could have solved the DLL problem I think ^^"
One time I was installing Windows 3.0 apps on Windows 10 I've downloaded otvdm then it runs Windows 3.0 apps then I installing the Microsoft Bob setup and it just load up! thank you mjd.
This is something that I'll never understand why it peaks my interest. I wasn't looking for it but I know that I needed it.
Challenge: Install the floppy disk version of Bob as well as Great Greetings through Bob on the 98 PC
It could not copy itself into the PATH variable to associate the shared DLLs. That's why it could not find the DLLs all the time.
Sooooo much better than the start page!
This made me sooooooo nostalgic 😭 It makes me want to try out installing Bob on my Windows 7 laptop... I have Windows 10, but it's not 32-bit, so I daren't try and install Bob there.
easiest way to figure out where the startup exe, is to go check on task scheduler.
The icon for Control Panel didn't change because Microsoft never actually changed the icon for the executable. The icon was changed under shell32 and imageres
Control.exe is still using the Windows 7 icon to this day. Though if you look through the system about half the icons in Windows 10 are from Windows 7 days. There's even some in there all the way from 95
@Akhilesh Sattanathan my comment was from three years ago before they ever replaced any of the 95-Vista icons
Im must be giving u alot of ad revenue cuz i keep accidentally clicking off of the video and when i click on it again it gives me an ad
More money for u, you deserve it though
Great video! See if you can install other software in Windows 10.
64-bit can technically run 16-bit. There is a third party program called OTVDM, which manages to get 16-bit to run without major issue. At least the 16-bit Windows apps I used run fine.
6:35: Here Lies: Michael's Eardrums.
Video idea: trying to install all windows 1.0 programs on windows 11 and see if they work
Theoretically, you could run Bob on a 64-bit machine with no 3rd-party software in you ran Bob in NTVDM and NTVDM in SysWOW64.
I'm actually surprised bob is working on Windows 10! Wow! XD
i know... not all things work on bob, but still!
Not all things worked on Bob when it was new!
Not all things worked for Bob at the time.
XD
You're wrong, Windows 95 uses MS-DOS for its base os, and Windows 10 Uses NT For its base os.
7:54
...Accidental Mii channel theme?
Wow, you know what, I should run Microsoft Bob on my Eee PC.
The bob logo is scary
*grow up*
Why did you not use OTVDM it can run 16-bit Programs on a 64-bit OS
mjd found otvdm in 2019 and that video was made in 2018
WHY YOU WORKED? WHEN I GET TO THE PREPARE SCREEN IT SAYS INSUFFICIENT MEMORY
Very simple, it just doesn't remember the msbob folder, so make a .bat file to load bob and problem fixed.
Start MS Bob Shell.bat
cd C:\
rem C:\MSBOB
cd msbob
start HOME\HOME.EXE
I'm sure it could be reworked were a reg key could be added to simply remember C:\MSBOB . The other fix is to make a copy of the .dll's needed in the bob app folders, eg. utopia.dll - > copy to C:\msbob\home\ . repeat for each bob app and golden. :)
Bob on Windows 10? Try Windows Mixed Reality.
I think the reason you had to copy all the DLLs is because the installer failed to add the MSBOB directory to PATH.
dog is very cute aw
My dad had to change his name from Bob when Micros**t lawyers sent him a cease and desist letter.
Now that's dank!
Get it? Cause COMIC SANS!?
Actually Windows can install a 32 bit program on an 64bit OS it has a compatibility layer that is why you see two program files folders in your C:
But not 16 bit
You probably could have put all the DLL files just in system32 and it would find them
The problem might be is that MS-BOB did not support long file names
Can you possibly run MS Bob on Windows 11?
I like how eveyone hates windows 11 for advertising microsoft with a 1 line but nobody hates a huge thing saying
ALWAYS HAVE YOUR FILES WITH YOU
SING IN
*cloud image using up 6 lines of files*
Where can I find the MS-BOB for windows 10?
in the microsoft store
5:40 you need to make link to HOME.EXE, and in options set working folder to C:/Bob
Microsoft Bob on Mac OS X using Wine?
Too late
5:30 I can confirm that this is an environment variable problem
But a tech said its a 64 bit system(x64) on windows 10
but I think it used to be 32 bit ? On windows 7
I also wonder if the new file system versus the old if it having trouble with the 8.3 versus the long names.
SO CUTE! 10:37
if you installed IE on your computer (i do still) you could use it in MS bob.
thankful video
I know how to make MSBOB work on Windows 10
*Creates Windows 95 VM*
Done
It I format c in the VM would it erase files in the c drive on the actual pc?
9:30 Maybe it's a registry issue.
dang only 6k views you need more attention
What if it was 4K???
I liked this video but where is your download link?
But I'm still not sure how to install it, i think I need ntvdm (16/32bit) to run it but i have ntvdm (64bit) emulator.
I think ntvdm.dll and ntvdm64.dll are emulator(s).?
Do you need any suggestions where to get it?
Sounds like an internal path setting or perhaps a registry key is not correct.
The WinWorld Setup is not running. I have maked Compalibity to Windows 95 still not working
MICROSOFT BOB AND VEGENE
wtf
BABE NO OMG 😂😂😂😂
No, those errors also happened on Win31 on my DOSBox
For Me It Work Out of The Box On Windows XP SP3 32-Bit
1:10 You can still use 16 bit apps on 64-bit Windows 10 Using NTVDM/OTVDM
I tried it but Microsoft BOB isn't working.
The PATH is not correct, that's why it's not finding the BOB .dll files
this is a mastercourse on bad sound effects
Just add the root to your path environment variable
But what if you run it in 32-bit compatibility mode?
well nobdy knew that it was soo hard to do microsoft bob on windows 10 8:29
Decall, what are you doing here?
Let's see Can I run Micrsoft Bob on Windows 11

How do I find ntvd? I have ntvd64.. It doesn't open.
It's Microsoft 1OB
I want to install this
Try adding that root folder to PATH.
Bob is an OS or an App?
It's an app that was created by Microsoft in the 90's.
link?
I thought DOS was necessary for "Bob"
Bob is a Windows app not a DOS app.
