Believing involves thought to speak it out. Thought is made out of memory, past experiences, therefore thought is all you know and all you know is YOU, your self/ego. Meaning your believe is self interested based on limited memory dataset. Memory is always limited. Thought being past, used in the present to predict the future is time (psychological time)! Meaning the nameless, if existing, will never come into being when the self is the act through thought. Thought (self) has created divisions between me and them, between my family and the neighbour, my country and your country. Thought has created the country borders which do no exist if you cross the borders. Just some people following some leaders way, some authority. If you look at our minds. We also have created authorities in our head. One thought has the authority to say “i should eat more healthy”, “I should do sport”. The other thought may procrastinate and we twitch the authorities like we switch our leaders - out of self interest.. such a pity. Our conditioned mind is creating the society over generations. And we still don’t stop chattering our limited knowledge instead of questioning our conditioning.. the one that leads us into yearly wars..
Faith/Belief should be used as a starting point, then its benefits multiply. But if you use it as an end in itself, that is where the problem lies. You have to have faith/belief in your guide or yourself that you won't drown when you enter pool to learn swimming. If that is lacking, you will never enter pool and thus never learn swimming. Thus, faith when used positively, inspires you to take the first steps (overcoming your anxiety, doubts etc) which ultimately will end with you experiencing it. Thus depending on its usage, faith is good or bad.
You will get confuse if you hear all the gurus. They all have different teachings. Follow one of them. Otherwise you should listen to all of them and find out the common thing they want to say

But in india the enlightened people don't want others to believe..they want people to experience by themselves and that will create their own understanding of something they haven't experienced before. that's why Yoga meditation at it's peek..the process of going invert are the tools that Yogis have to experience. Yoga means the oneness.. just believe in something that someone said is religion. But the experience by the tools yoga,deep meditation, the Sadhna.. helps you to get rid of the limitations of this world.. It doesn't mean you believe or don't believe.. But if you want to experience just go invert.. the religion won't let you to god.. Once you have experience the power beyond this dimensions.. this world won't excite you anymore..
One of the reason for so many "Gods", stems from the concept of "Ishta Deivatha" - I.e. One's own God. Where each of us can create / concieve of our own God. Give it a form if one chooses / pleases.
