@@PabloRodriguezwhyCharlieWhy This song is an original from The Stranglers. Laurence Mason did a cover in the style of Dave Brubeck. Read his description of how he (Laurence Mason) created the video. Laurence Mason writes "A couple of people have asked how I made this video so here we go - I took a clip from a 1964 live version of Take Five (www.youtube.com/watch?v=tT9Eh...) and made the drum loop by chopping up the intro and turning it from 5/4 into the 3/4 - 4/4 groove that Golden Brown has. The upright bass sound is sequenced from Logic, and the piano part was played in using one of the piano sounds from a Nord Electro 5D. Then I played the sax part over the top (I play a King Zephyr alto and for this I used a hard rubber Yanigasawa mouthpiece rather than my usual bright Guardala). The video was then edited using the clip I'd taken the drum loop from." The music was composed by Dave Greenfield and the lyrics were written by Hugh Cornwell of the Stranglers.

17 February 2019. Always and forever, thank you to Great Britain and the British people whose creativity, since the 1960s, has given the rest of the World hundreds of unique bands such as the Stranglers and music of unparalleled beauty, quirkiness and atmosphere. What would our lives have been without British bands? Thank you from Sicily. And love, admiration and adoration.
Hard to put your finger on what makes this song so timeless and brilliant. I think more than anything it's the mysterious feel it has (beyond what appears to be an apparent drug reference). What are the lyrics truly about though? Are they about anything at all? Or is it heroin? Impossible to say, only they really know. It's got an incredible rhythmic quality to it very few song have ever come close to. I could quite happily listen to it for hours on end on repeat. Really a phenomenal piece of music. It takes me somewhere that is hard to explain. It's just stunning really. A true classic. One of my favourite songs of all time.
I agree it has a mysterious quality to it. Its mildly upbeat, mellow, and vaguely haunting all at once with its repetitive melody. I also read its about heroin.
amazing pop song - with a bloody harpsichord!!! beautiful, hypnotic. I was entranced when I heard it 34 years ago. still am. one of the great pop songs.
Punk or not punk ? Stranglers = Punk Floyd ? it's always the same controversy with this band In july 1975 Dave Greenfield answered an advert in Melody Maker for a "soft rock" band. They were "punk rock" in 77 because they emerged in this period , because of their attitude, because of the rattus. But a punk band with a keyboard it's something unusual. The eight minute song "Down in the Sewer" is closer to progressive rock than punk. "Princess of the street" is blues... after 77 they continue to explore different style. "The Men in black" LP is electronic rock, "Aural Sculpture" sounds soul music. Songs structure, lyrics and elaborated sounds from Black and White, The Raven, La Folie, Feline, etc have nothing to see with a 2 minutes 3-4 chords typical punk song. The Stranglers are unclassifiable and it's why they are unique

The variety of music in the 80s was amazing... you would never get an 'odd ball' but magic song like this in the modern top playing songs on the radio now....

I hear nothing in the charts that remotely interests me now, but to be fair there are some acts bubbling under that could have been great with more backing.
