Check with the Speer loading manual. They warn against using magnum primers with 2400. It increases the pressure level.

Johnny , about your dilemma of using magnum primers at the beginning , not sure why , I have been under the impression that they were only needed in loads above 60 something grains , 60 , 65 or 68 or something like that . Been realoading a while now , but find your videos really enjoyable to watch because of the powder and primer combinations you try and your load work ups . I only reload for 1 pistol at this time , and have been for 15 or so years but have recently bought dies and such for a couple rifles one of which I don't even own yet . It is really nice to have a wealth of information available at my fingertips . Thanks so much for taking the time to produce and upload this knowledge .

Another great video. Those first 5 you tried seemed like money and they thump pretty good to. I like reloading for the 357 & 38 Spc mostly use Blue Dot for light plinking loads it's like shooting a 22.

Hey Johnny, to my eye in two quick reviews of your fine video, it looks to me like your shots are ok windage wise but pretty consistently 6 o'clock low. Keep up the good work. Love my 357 Big Boy, it seems to like Hornady 125 and 158 XTP's equally over both 2400 and H110 which are giving me 1/2 to 3 inch groups at 108 yards. Also have shot many hard lead cast boolits but to lesser precision. Have yet to try powder coated stuff but sure enjoy the videos that you, Elvis, Thorsaxe and Fortune Cookie put up. Good work all and thank you all.

In the Speep #9 loading manual which I have used a lot for .357 all loads with 2400 powder and 158 grain bullets all call for magnum primers. I use several different loading handbooks and 3 of 5 use magnum primers with 2400 powder.

The original Hercules 2400 powder was a gtreat match for 158 grain. 357 heavy loads. I loaded a lot of those in the 70's. 2400 has a fair amount of muzzle flash and will leave some powder granule debris after firing. Clean the extractor star area carefully or the revolver cylinder will bind. BTW - I always used magnum primers with 2400.

Ah, I remember when Alliant pistol powders like 2400 were commercially available in practice. (See also Unique, Power Pistol …)
Probably have to develop some H110 loads instead for this project if done today.

Don't feel bad my marlin 45 long colt cowboy rifle bulges a little at the bottom of the case as well. I think the chamber is a little big. But they all resize back out. And I love these 158 grain Lee bullets. Wish I had a 357 mag rifle. Does the Henry feed 38 special ammo as good as 38's? Any problems with any type of ammo with your rifle? I have a golden boy 22 mag rifle that seems to feed well. I shoot the Lee 300 grain RNFP gas check bullet in the rifle. Live shooting cast ammo that I made myself. Are u using wheel weights and quenching?

I don't think Henry's like the bullets you had there. It cycled fine with the Hornady projectiles right? I just bought a golden boy. I'm watching videos to figure out do's and don'ts even the manual said they can be picky. Revolvers eat everything because they don't have to feed or eject.

  • @mikemcnamee6030

Full house 357 magnum? Try out some Lilgun! you should be able to push that bullet to 2,000fps from your rifle. Over 40% more uumph! I use the same bullet but mine drop at 164gr and leave the 16" bore right at 2,000fps(1456ft/lbs ME). I use 158gr jacketed data for my coated lead pills. They are 6 grains heavier but the coated lead bullets develop much less bore friction(pressure) than a hard copper jacketed bullet. and Yes, I realize I am in uncharted territory here using full tilt lilgun loads with lead bullets.
That brass bulge is normal and much more apparent in brand new brass.

I personally use 18gr of lilgun in a starline case, CCI SRP or SPM, 164gr powder coated bullet cast from clip on wheel weights. Of course start low(15.5-16gr) and work up. I suggest stopping at 18gr. You wont see significant velocity gain above that. I worked up to 19.5gr and saw a sign of possible case head separation. not common with straightwall brass but leverguns are known to do this with hot loads. Im ok sending the 164gr hunk of lead out at 2,000fps.

It would be nice if you would dive into it a little deeper. It is a known fact that the original 357 load (for many years) was around 15.3 gr. of 2400 under and 158 gr. bullet. @ 1550 "ish" from an 8 inch revolver. You can test it and the velocity checks out. If the original load "by definition" is the "original pressure". I have a hard time believing you actually think the Henry is not at least as strong as the original S&W Registered 357 mag. revolver...Probably twice as strong.

Also your Brass shouldnt be bulging like that, I think your chambers pretty sloppy if they bulge like that.
I bought about 500 used brass that had a similar bulge and the dies took the bulge out and the cases havent failed.
My Marlin and Ruger do not bulge the cases even with higher pressure loads (in the 14gr 2400 range)

    • @desertfox2020
      @desertfox2020 3 года назад

Yes and the even bigger advantage, in my experience, is that the main thing that gets guns dirty is the cast bullet lube burning up and leaving carbon buildup everywhere. I shoot thousands of hard cast, coated bullets per month in like 11 different cartridges and my guns stay clean for much longer. I have a couple 357 revolvers that like to gum up quickly when shooting traditional cast bullets, like within 20-30 rounds. I can shoot hundreds of coated bullets through each one before this happens.

jreg0028 the lightest recoil loads Ive shot were 148grain hollow base wadcutters over 2.8 grains of Bullseye or titegroup. Both work great. By the way, its also the most accurate load Ive shot from a hand gun. It was the go to load for PPC Shooting for decades. I've used that load to get many folks hooked on shooting.
