    You said nostalgic 30 and 40-year-olds? I was just 25 when*Friends* first aired, and I watched each week, from the premiere to the emotional final episode. The premise was ridiculous, but the elements came together to create magic. I believed these characters were friends; moreover, I _bought_ their lives as plausible, and I wanted in. *Edit:* In the chart at 8:18, it looks like Monica had less screen time, not Phoebe.

      Was the editting not quite lazy though? Like repeatedly using the footage from the opening credits. I didn't think the content came across as particularly well researched either but then again I'm a big fan of Friends.

      The Office is indeed a great watch, but there's a certain charm about Friends that is evident in all aspects of the show, from the writing to the set-design. I think a key part for me was that it was the first sit-com I really got into growing up, which probably makes me a bit bias!

    I’ve never watched an episode of Fleabag, although the BBC can’t stop itself from plugging it via whatever outlet I’m looking at. So, Yeah, interesting that there’s some address to the camera/audience in the show but how ground-breaking is this really? Exhibit A: Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) does this, and successfully, without ever breaking the suspension of disbelief. Contrast Friends, which Never (I think) *ever* does it, but everyone seems to think does. Breaking the fourth wall isn’t new, and to be honest, isn’t really that amazing in TV, so Pheebs can shove her BAAFTA up her ars.,.,,

    • @mhawang8204
      @mhawang8204 4 года назад +3

      Comment for a wrong video?
      Breaking the 4th wall is not uncommon, but Fleabag does it in a fresh way. It’s not only a narration device; it also serves a purpose in character development and theme. The viewers are not only being talked to, but we’re also participants in Fleabag’s story, as a replacement for her best friend, Boo, who in turn was a replacement for her deceased mom.
      Many viewers FEEL discomfort when the priest notices the camera in S2, when Fleabag stops talking to the audience when she’s with him, and finally when she stops the camera (thus us) from following her. It’s like losing a friend who grows apart from you, and you don’t feel needed anymore. These all show the impact of this particular way of breaking the 4th wall.
      Film is a creative medium. I’d say finding a new way to use an old technique is just as innovative as playing with a new technological toy in filmmaking.
