Totally. It felt like he never actually had an established, consistent personality. He was just whatever was necessary for weird, whacky behavior and jokes.
Another annoying thing about De Angelo, is that he is wildly, and unrealistically capricious. He changes personalities each episode in such extreme and awful ways. Maybe the writers were trying a few out to see what would work, but it makes him even more terrible to watch on screen.
He even changes within episodes at times. The first time he's introduced, he's wholesome and has a Michael Scott vibe with a different flavor, then becomes this charismatic and well-spoken serious boss who also acts like Charles Miner? He's friendly to Pam and Jim but then becomes incredibly distant but somehow too friendly with Andy? He seems competent and charismatic but in the Dundies, he is too nervous? Then from competent, he becomes an incredibly bad salesman who almost made Andy lose an insanely important client. "What is his deal?" is all I was thinking when he was on screen.
It's clear that D'Angelo wasn't going to be the permanent boss just by the episode titles. They released the names of the episodes before they aired. "Dwight K Schrute Acting Manager" and "The Search Committee" kind of blow your "D'Angelo wasn't working and they replaced him theory" away. They write the episodes and seasonal arcs well in advance.
Will Ferrel has also literally said "They cast me as a big name to hold people over until the found a replacement". This takes a minute of research to find.
Seriously though why did they need to bring in a replacement at all? The best possible thing to do would have been have Michael leave then have a finale where we find out that he was replaced by Dwight. The Deangelo story arc and seasons 8-9 were completely unnecessary. You cannot expect a show to continue its legacy or last very long when the top billed star leaves.
I personally don’t find Will Ferrell funny. I can’t stand him as a comedian. Stranger than fiction, that was ok but other than that he’s been acting as a Deangelo his whole career.
@Wilson Hey dude I’m just saying I never was a huge Adam Sandler fan but my dad was. Than in 2019 my dad was all like this Adam Sandler he’s not as funny as he used to be.
The only actor who could have replaced Michael was Danny DeVito. The other option was to rotate the manager job between the rest of the staff. Edit: I agree, Ricky Gervais would have been perfect.
Yeah but you have to admit if Ricky jervais was in the show it wouldn't really work if he was in more than like 2 minutes since it's like he just stole the show since people might think he was on for like a ratings boost since he had his own office
The point of his character is to show why a replacement for Steve Carrel wouldn’t work. It’s smart for the writers to show us why we wouldn’t want another Michael but instead see someone from within become manager.
@@chrishansen9731 That's what made Michael's character funny in the early seasons. He was an incompetent boss yet he dominated the space. That's what the writers were going for because they were trying to replace Michael before the Carell viewers left.
You have to keep in mind, in addition to writing a good show, the maker's of The Office also have to mug for ratings. Will Farrell (a big movie star, especially at the time) was given so much screen time as a distraction from the fact that their biggest star was leaving.
The Office without Steve Carell as Micheal Scott was borderline unwatchable with Annoying or Unnecessary Characters like Gabe, Nellie, Robert California, and Brian. I think we all try to forget seasons 8 and 9.
@Strawberrymilk Lord No, she was the worst ever. She unfairly took Andy's job as Manager and tried to turn the staff against him. She was full of bad ideas and poor judgment as a unnecessary character who never deserved the Manager even for a minute.
DeAngelo made me squirm in my seat, but knowing his presence was temporary makes it all the more enjoyable. I watch The Office to squirm and cringe, so they did their job.
I watch the office to squirm and cringe too, but when a show does that to you and STILL it keeps you coming back, it makes you want more, then you know "cringing" is not the main focus, it's the intelligence in the setup and the delivery of it. When Deangelo comes along that intelligence flies out the window. All of a sudden I am cringing but I'm not having fun anymore. I don't want to come back. And so, no, in that sense I don't think they did their job very well.
My theory is that the annoying nature of De’Angelo was completely deliberate from the writers..they new they might loose some fans with Carrell’s departure so they drafted in the over the top Farrell for a few episodes to get the fans distracted by Micheal’s absence..then when they gave it to Andy the fans were so relieved they ‘slightly’ forgot that it wasn’t Micheal
The Most Annoying Characters in "The Office" Toby: He always let himself be treated like dirt, he was also a horrible HR representative that never really cared for his employees concerns. He should've quit his job a long time ago to be happier. Gabe: Most of the Dunder Mifflin employees couldn’t stand him, and it’s easy to see why. He was just annoying with always trying to impress the boss by enforcing rules and his short relationship with Erin was flat way too creepy. Nellie: She unfairly took Andy's job as Manager and tried to turn the staff against him. She was full of bad ideas and poor judgment as a unnecessary character who never deserved the Manager even for a minute.

@@choreomaniac I personally liked Toby, pre season 8 as in 8 & 9 he was either talking about the strangler or chasing Nellie around. Toby honestly reminds me of myself as we both are a bit awkward & are kinda hated by everyone even though we both portray a rather kind personality.. but idk
The absolutely worst bit of writing was when they put Vickers in there to sing the goodbye song for Michael Scott when it should have just been the original cast for obvious reasons. This is made worse by the fact that they gave Vickers a fucking Solo at the end of the song, which leads me to believe that it was probably because Will Ferrall is a goddamn egomaniac who demanded it.
I think what made the comedy of The Office work so well was how the characters quirks and eccentricities were grounded in reality enough that the absurd situations rarely demanded we suspend disbelief. Then, enter Will Ferrell playing a character who is completely unbelievable. From his peculiar sense of style and over-the-top behavior, to the implausible story about how we was hired, his entire story arc is just relentlessly wacky series of implausible scenarios ending in a disabling potentially fatal head injury. A twist so bad it might have been better if they just ended the show with Michael's departure.
But it overshadows Michael's last few episodes, and therefore is a poor choice from The Office's screenwriters. Instead of seeing Michael's final episodes filled with his interactions with the cast of characters we know and love, we watch his interactions with a new, loud, irritating character who distracts attention from Michael's relationship with cornerstone characters like Pam, Dwight, Jim, Stanley etc.
Honestly season 8 gets a lot of underserved flak. It's not as good as most of the rest of the show, but there's lots of great stuff in there. Season 9 is a bit of a slog though.
Nothing to add here. You're spot on. It is mind boggling how the creators, casting director and writers all agreed that this character would fit in at such a sensitive time for the show. Butchered it to say the least.
I literally thought this was a parody video because I had no remembrance of this character until now, and today I saw his debut episode while watching the season where micheal leaves and my god it's been a cacophony of horrifying memories of him lol
I actually found it quite clever writing to have this A-list star show up as a character stealing Michaels limelight. Michael time and time again got himself into situations where he ruined cherished moments trying to be the centre of attention... so it was fitting that when he finally was the centre of attention on the show that they tried to rob him of it. Most amusing was that conference room song. Those of you who hated that they spoilt this tender, heartfelt, emotional moment for Michael is missing the joke that he's getting a taste of his own medicine... and the character who ruined that moment was Deangelo. A big part of the office is it's meant to be a real-life, mundane setting... if the staff started this cute, warm sendoff for what's really Steve Carrell (not Michael) then it's going against that illusion.
at least todd packer was MADE to be hated. nelly on the other hand im convinced is supposed to be likeable but shes just so infuriating in every scene shes in
I totally agree! I was looking forward to seeing Will Ferrell come onto the show because I generally really enjoy his acting. The way he was written was certainly quite a let down. Great video!
You are not wrong. A big part of the problem was that Will Ferrell refused to stick to the scripts and insisted on improving his scenes. This was very frustrating to the whole cast. Watch the deleted scenes we with him and you can totally tell. I'm pretty sure that Will Ferrell actually asked for the role as opposed to being sought after for it and he was just too big a name to pass up for the studio.
Trying to replace Steve Carell was their biggest mistake. I think it should have ended with his departure. Most of the episodes of the last two seasons were some of my least favorite. Even promoting Andy was painful. It pretty much ruined his character. If they did have to carry on the series after a Michael left, it would have been better to put Jim in the position in season 8 and then put Dwight in for the last season once Jim gets his Athleap business going. I think there could have been some great moments within those scenarios. Making Andy the manager was just unrealistic. How would the worst salesman in the group get promoted to run the office in the real world? Would never happen.
NBC messed things up by not paying Steve Carell. I don't think the showrunners were going to just end the show because of that, considering everyone else getting paid, but that's where things got murky
This year I started watching the Office and last week i came to the episode where Michael went away. When I first saw Will Ferrell i thought this will be good. He was such an dissapointment.. the moment he escaped from hospital and walked right back in i said "eww not this dude again." 😂
I like to watch everything up to and including Michael leaving. At the airport and flying off, then skipping everything and going straight to the last two episodes of the series. You miss nothing, it skips everything you don't need and everything that needs a catch up (Andy in the audition line ) gets explained by Andy.
I am watching The Office for the first time and I just finished S07. I totally agree the character is very annoying. You almost want to look away from his scenes.
I don't think he was ever going to stay on the show to replace Michael, because at the time Will Ferrel was being paid a ton of money per episode, so it honestly wouldn't have been something that they could have greenlit.
At least DeAngelo didn't last for very long. I think the worst character is Senator Lipton. For 3 seasons, he provided no laughs, and he was a scumbag hiding behind a stupid grin
I think the simplest answer to the Deangelo problem is that he's Michael Scott 7 seasons ago. This is Michael Scott we meet in the first season of the show and since then Michael developed, changed and evolved. Making him the new boss would be a massive step back. 7 seasons worth of step backs. And that's just hard to watch. I think it's the best exemplified by the fact that he leaves the show after a basketball accident in the warehouse, which kinda calls back to the basketball game in the first or second season. It was a moment of "we know it's a thing of the past, let's just get it over with".
Nah, too much hate on deangelo. I thought he was funny and plays a smart boss. He wasn’t used to this type of work environment, because you know how unrealistic Michael had the office going. If it was real life Michael would’ve been fired long time ago for all the crazy stuff he says and constant inappropriate behavior. I lost it when deangelo yelled at the cake, No😂Honestly, I hate how they make the show all about Jim. Jim being constantly told what to do by his wife makes him seem like pus. Pam told him to go in the inner circle like a child. Jim is the worst character, selfish, arrogant, never stands up for his wife, pathetic.
You're a hero! DeAngelo was a terrible character, horrible addition to the show, and made me hate Will Ferrell who I previously loved before he ruined The Office.
Nellie's character didn't work for the same reasons, I think. Catherine Tate's style of comedy doesn't match The Office, and she just came off as obnoxious. She would be great in a Will Ferrell flick tho. Robert Califorina, however, was just poor writing.
It was actually clever writing if you think about it. That's EXACTLY what Michael did time and time again... he ruined cherished moments to take centre stage. It's only fitting that when he finally gets the opportunity to be the centre of something emotional that it gets ruined.
Michael ruined moments for others all the time. so, serves him right. also, get a life instead of being upset with an actor for what his character did.
She wasn't that bad, she was actually decent funny although her accent and her way of talking made her funnier. I just don't like how she was introduced to the Dunder Mifflin branch. Taking an empty seat of the branch manager's office without any permission or qualification was not only unrealistic as hell it was als a complete dick move.
I am not in love with Ferrell, but he did good in the role. The issue was the writing was terrible for his character. He did his best for a dreadfully written character.
I wasn’t really bothered much by him tbh but yeah I didn’t think it would’ve worked that well if he stayed long term. That juggling scene is still one of my all time favourite parts of the Office though.
That juggling scene was just pointless in every point of view. Pointless for the characters, pointless for the his own character, pointless for the story, pointless for the viewers. It came so random that you could think the writers really ran out of ideas how to make D'Angelo look even weirder and pointless than he already is. Probably one of the all time low quality scenes of the show.
Deangelo Vickers was one of the funniest characters in my opinion. "That baby can be the star of a show called 'Babies I don't care about'" is hilarious. His obnoxious presence would've been perfect to replace Michael's obnoxious presence. I do agree that they rushed his character but I think their goal was to introduce his character well enough before all the Michael viewers left when Carell departed from the show. The show was already straying away from the subtle humor that built the British version of the show by the time Deangelo was introduced. The reason Michael's character is funny is because he's incompetent, yet he dominates the space. This is even evident in the later season's Michael was in. For example, the parkour scene was funny because it was obnoxious, and someone like Michael was dominating the space. I don't like how people have no problem with the parkour scene but take issues with the juggling scene even though it's the same form of comedy, yet with different actors. Also (6:19) Deangelo was only contracted for 4 episodes on the show.
I feel bad for Will because he just did what they wanted. The original Michael Scott was also disliked, and the writers had to alter the character at the start of season 2, and it worked better with audiences. At the same time, I feel DeAngelo was meant to be disliked, and Will played it perfectly.
I could never quite figure out what kind of character Will Ferrell was trying to portray in these episodes. He went from his usual "explosive outrageous funny guy" to a serious boss who hated being flattered by his employees to a "boys club" sexist. What was the point of his character? Very weird writing and acting.
5:00 you do know that Michael didn't know about the song, and probably will ferrel didn't know either, so will just tried to be funny and ruined it. Look at Ed helms face or Bj novak during that song, they're pissed that he ruined it
I knew Steve carrel didn't know, but not Will Ferrell, thats awful! He totally ruined it, imagine working with steve for 5 years just to have someone working with him 3 days ruin your heartfelt goodbye lol
@@thefilmessay9832 yeah and I completely agree with you about how he was just the absolute wrong choice for a mockumentart. For me it was also when he came back into the office after his injury, it was just a real stupid joke and in a way it was almost mockumentary wall-breaking. That same style of joke was like what happened in talladega nights when he thought he was on fire and freaked out, so im not sure if will had input on this part being in there. I'm guessing they had will ferrell for the role just because they could get him, rather than thinking if he was actually right for the show
They really should have just had Deangelo be somewhere else during that scene. Steve Carell looked like he was doing everything he could to not cringe and stay in the moment
I just felt weirded-out by the whole thing. It seemed like the writers had no idea who the character actually was, so he came across like a psychopath who kept completely changing his personality within a very short period of time.
You’ve described it exactly. I was wondering at my aversion to rewatching these last episodes. I’m one of those that have seen all seven seasons at least 12 times maybe more. But cannot watch the ones with will Farrell.
See I feel almost the complete opposite of everyone else when it comes to D’Angelo. I thought that even though he was very much out of place, Ferrell committed to the character so damn hard it was hilarious
Wholeheartedly disagree on all points. I think Will Ferrell fit in as a throwaway character, was meant to be hated and a terrible guy, and made for some pretty funny classic awkward Office moments.
That's how I felt about his character too. He's one of my least favorites, mainly because I enjoyed almost every character even more, but it was never hatred I loathed Senator Lipton, and he surprisingly lasted for 3 seasons
So true & it’s not even close. There isn’t 1 moment where I like Ferrell’s character whatsoever. I honestly didn’t understand why he was even on the show.
Season 7 was a let down for me. Every character becomes a Cartoon, Michael finally transform people in some kind of fucked up family (what he always wanted) But why the hell the characters are so off? Dwight had an episode when he makes Jim bleed by shooting snowball, isn't Fun at all, Dwight had better moments being pathetic i always assume they would make his character grow after season 4 with the Angela's Arc, but he Just becomes worse and worse totally out of character. And Michael had an amazing goodbye in the Dunndies episode but one episode latter everyone treats him like a joke ALL over again, except for Jim and Pam that had emotional goodbyes. I don't know, after season 5 the office Lost it
true i've been marathon the office for the first time and i notice the cringe level is get amped up at season 3 (had to pause or take a break watching michael scott embarrassed himself but get used to it and love it) but the season 7 had a weird feeling to it. like what you said with dwight injure jim like that when dwight is the one who doing it first with that comment and jim had a fun way to get back at him but then it turned into creepy and dangerous thing. and now im stuck where will ferrel come into the picture and i cant stand to watch it, not when michael got to part away :( overall season 7 is very noticeable downhill from me, idk if i should continue finishing season 8 and 9 too.
I like to think of D'Angelo as an statement: no one will ever replace Michael's place. This thought is immediately killed by Andy's character in season 8 and 9.
The problem with The Office were all the “heart-felt” moments. In these moments, the writers completely ignored everything they’ve established about the characters. D’Angelo wasn’t a bad character because he “ruined” these moments, the touching moments shouldn’t have existed and D’Angelo is proof the writers DIDN’T change the format. The made Michael so inept, awkward, unable to relate to people on any sort of level, and completely unlikeable. That’s where the comedy came from. Watching his cringeworthy moments. So audience expect his replacement to be just as inept and unlikeable (expect it’s clear Will Farrell ignored every direction the writers tried to give him and he just played himself as an SNL character).
Any subtlety The Office ever had was long gone by the time Michael left. I mean the beginning of Stress Relief Part One is about as subtle as Sharknado. I don't think his character ruined the last episodes with Michael. There were still plenty of sincere moments with Michael and all the other main characters. His character was ten times funnier than Nelly, Plop, or the kid from Hot Tub Time Machine.
He killed the show for me. He was so awful that I bailed after season 7. When they announced that season 9 would be the last one, I watched the first episode and it was horrendous so I didn't bother watching anymore until the finale. I never saw season 8 and I have absolutely no desire to.
I think he was intended to be a disaster of a boss and was always meant to be killed. Just like Charles Miner was intended to be a straight serious character who destroys the integrity of the office, Deangelo was supposed to be a "oh shit. This isn't good .." character that you just cringe at how absurd everything is It just kinda fell flat tho.
Yeh completely agree, just wish they didn't have to add a new character in Michael's last few episodes. After he's left I could accept, but not during his goodbye scenes
I don’t know what his character was supposed to be though. He was well liked at the start, then got kind of rude, then he’s a sexist, what is his personality?
It's a great series, I've just watched for the fist time, but the character development in this series is bizarre. So many characters go through a complete 180' change within one or two episodes - Jan's flip from respectable manager to crazy woman, Ryan from unassuming temp to tyrannical manager to hipster, Pam from receptionist to student to receptionist, Andy from bro persona to uptight insecure sensitive dude. The character flips are wild.
Ya also can’t forget how annoying Nellie was as well…she made the latter episodes unwatchable. They also ruined a perfect set up of having Andy and Erin together because he left to film the stupid hangover 3 movie and so he “had a nervous breakdown”/left. Guess his dad being played by Stephen Collins cursed him since they had to remove him due to I believe his scandal coming out around that time. Just like they removed him from its always sunny.
D'Angelo always felt forced to me. Like the only reason they put him in the show at all was to have Will Ferral in the show. Like those Dwyane Johnson movies that are written specifically for Dwyane Johnson, it's not about the character or the story it's about having the actor in the show/movie and that always kills a story.
Deangelo was painfully unfunny and definitely one of the show's worst characters, and I agree the timing for him being introduced couldn't have been worse. His over-the-top singing during Michael's goodbye song was a glaring sign of how terribly misplaced he was. Each of his attempts at humor fell incredibly flat and was more cringe-inducing than anything. His presence is surely one of the show's low points.
I didn’t mind the character, might have felt differently if he had lasted longer. Nelly was the only one during the entire run that was absolutely insufferable. She served no purpose, I don’t know why she was ever on there to begin with.
This always happens when a major character leaves the show. The show always goes downhill. When Barney Fife left Mayberry, when Diane left Cheers, et cetera.
The protagonist is Jim, and I know it's a hot take but I don't really like Michael, that's mostly because I think he's a little too flawed of a character for me, and also because I'm a very bad person for dealing with cringe, which is 90% of his dialogues, so I actually found myself skipping a lot of scenes, and to this day I can't get myself to watch Scott's Tots, which is an episode that embodies both of my arguments
I have to admit D’Angelo getting crushed by the basketball hoop was a relief.

Eddie murphy or ricky gervais could go back into the david brent role and become the manager
John Mulaney!
Bob odenkirk 👀👀👀
Yeah but you have to admit if Ricky jervais was in the show it wouldn't really work if he was in more than like 2 minutes since it's like he just stole the show since people might think he was on for like a ratings boost since he had his own office
Bob Odenkirk!
The point of his character is to show why a replacement for Steve Carrel wouldn’t work. It’s smart for the writers to show us why we wouldn’t want another Michael but instead see someone from within become manager.
Will Ferrell's character is so annoying people barely know how to spell his name in the comments....
His character was awful. It was like Ferrell had to have every scene focused on him
@@chrishansen9731 But still hey man everyone says Will Ferrell is awful. Hey I think Adam Sandler is worse especially now.
@Malachi the Great Hey I think he’s better and funnier than Adam Sandler.
@@chrishansen9731 That's what made Michael's character funny in the early seasons. He was an incompetent boss yet he dominated the space. That's what the writers were going for because they were trying to replace Michael before the Carell viewers left.
i’ve never ever been a fan of will ferrel. don’t think he’s funny at all
Hey what about Adam Sandler I think his movies and characters are more annoying I mean have you seen Jack And Jill
well then you're a fool.
and you look like a dude.
Every character he plays is such an ass or super fucking annoying
He sucks, idk how ppl find him funny. I mean, he can be alright in some stuff but a lot of the time, he's just some obnoxious weirdo
California did make it somewhat watchable in season 8
@@captainyank138 I found him weird for no reason.
@@captainyank138 he was kinda of creepy.
@Strawberrymilk Lord No, she was the worst ever. She unfairly took Andy's job as Manager and tried to turn the staff against him. She was full of bad ideas and poor judgment as a unnecessary character who never deserved the Manager even for a minute.
Gabe was good
It just had to end with Michael's leaving. After Michael left, the show became awful.
Honestly it would have been a much more dignified end for the show
I think in between D Angelo leaving and Nellie becoming manager the show was decent
DeAngelo made me squirm in my seat, but knowing his presence was temporary makes it all the more enjoyable. I watch The Office to squirm and cringe, so they did their job.
This guy gets it.
The Most Annoying Characters in "The Office"
Toby: He always let himself be treated like dirt, he was also a horrible HR representative that never really cared for his employees concerns.
AND he’s the Scranton Strangler!
fuck nellie. ruined andy's character. i never loved andy but he just turned into this... thing and its like no. also are we just gonna pretend she didnt sleep with her employees?
Toby was great. He brought out the worst in Michael which was comedy gold. Without Toby we would miss that whole aspect of his personality.
@@choreomaniac I personally liked Toby, pre season 8 as in 8 & 9 he was either talking about the strangler or chasing Nellie around. Toby honestly reminds me of myself as we both are a bit awkward & are kinda hated by everyone even though we both portray a rather kind personality.. but idk
Gabriel Ryu he reminds me of Charlie Brown. I never saw the later seasons of The Office.
Cathy, everyone hates Cathy. It’s obvious
TopHat TurtleGaming she wasn’t a big unoff charter to be the worst
I love cathy
Malachi the Great I’m pretty sure that was Jo, Cathy was the girl who tried to make Jim cheat on Pam when they went to Florida
Malachi the Great No problem, also I really liked what Jo brought to the table.
i didn’t hate her
You know that a character as bad when they make such a good actor be so painful to watch
4:45 wdym "completely out of tune" my man nailed that riff
The absolutely worst bit of writing was when they put Vickers in there to sing the goodbye song for Michael Scott when it should have just been the original cast for obvious reasons.
This is made worse by the fact that they gave Vickers a fucking Solo at the end of the song, which leads me to believe that it was probably because Will Ferrall is a goddamn egomaniac who demanded it.
He didn't. There's videos of them rehersing, and it was planned.
"The Office - Signs of a Declining Sitcom
"
I liked how D'Angelo was not able to speak publicly. They should have made this the reason he didn't stay on as manager, totally believable.
the entire point of his character was to be awful... It highlights what they are losing with Michael
I'm trying to make it through the first episode after Michael left, but I'm here on RUclips instead.
Best place to be is RUclips after Michael left, it's an adjustment to be sure!
I just binged the show up until Michael left, now I’m here trying to find motivation to finish the last two seasons.
Top 5 worst Office characters
1. Deangelo
2. Robert California
3. Nellie
4. Clark
5. Pete
Pete really sucks
Clark and Pete were terrible.
Basically all new characters after season 7
hate clark
pete and nelly were cool
Todd packer had to be the worst
Oh god yeah
Nelly
Well at least he is intentionally made hateable unlike other characters
Todd Packer was a good character. He had the potential to be a GREAT character if the writers paid more attention to him.
at least todd packer was MADE to be hated. nelly on the other hand im convinced is supposed to be likeable but shes just so infuriating in every scene shes in
I totally agree!
I'm pretty sure that Will Ferrell actually asked for the role as opposed to being sought after for it and he was just too big a name to pass up for the studio.
i've seen the show twice and i never thought of it like this and honestly i 100% agree
BOOM!! Totally agree.
Yeah it felt like it was just an extended cameo, all I could think of was “Hey, it’s Will Ferrel and Steve Carrell, lol”
At least DeAngelo didn't last for very long.
I think the worst character is Senator Lipton. For 3 seasons, he provided no laughs, and he was a scumbag hiding behind a stupid grin
Ikr! I want to defend his inclusion by saying he was great political commentary, but what is political commentary doing in a sitcom about office life?
I think the simplest answer to the Deangelo problem is that he's Michael Scott 7 seasons ago. This is Michael Scott we meet in the first season of the show and since then Michael developed, changed and evolved. Making him the new boss would be a massive step back. 7 seasons worth of step backs. And that's just hard to watch. I think it's the best exemplified by the fact that he leaves the show after a basketball accident in the warehouse, which kinda calls back to the basketball game in the first or second season. It was a moment of "we know it's a thing of the past, let's just get it over with".
He should have played it more straight. No need for kooky.
The way Michael's final episodes were handled I refused to believe he was gone for good, until at least the season finale
What’s the name of the song in the background
You're a hero! DeAngelo was a terrible character, horrible addition to the show, and made me hate Will Ferrell who I previously loved before he ruined The Office.
Nellie's character didn't work for the same reasons, I think. Catherine Tate's style of comedy doesn't match The Office, and she just came off as obnoxious. She would be great in a Will Ferrell flick tho.
Robert Califorina, however, was just poor writing.
Yeah Robert was just a creepy pervert
I somewhat agree although my least favorite character was Charles Minor
Nellie is the worst character, if you ask me.
I love Nellie wthhhhhhhhhhhhhh. “Please sir don’t kill mee....you look like you’re laboring over a stool after just eaten juman flesh” COMEDY GOLD
Nellie was absolutely hilarious to me. I loved how poorly she fit in with the cast😂
Paused at 1:50 to see if Dwight was right: Was Pam's artwork bad because shadows were coming in from two directions?
It’s like they tried to replace Micheal with another Micheal and it just didn’t work
I will never forgive Ferrell for killing Michaels goodbye song
It was actually clever writing if you think about it. That's EXACTLY what Michael did time and time again... he ruined cherished moments to take centre stage. It's only fitting that when he finally gets the opportunity to be the centre of something emotional that it gets ruined.
Michael ruined moments for others all the time. so, serves him right. also, get a life instead of being upset with an actor for what his character did.
@@SandeshShak get a life instead of being mad at a comment i left 2 years ago
Does anyone know the name of the background music?
I’d rather sit through 4 episodes of Deangelo Vickers than 60 seconds of Nellie Bertram
Nellie was spectacularly funny
She wasn't that bad, she was actually decent funny although her accent and her way of talking made her funnier. I just don't like how she was introduced to the Dunder Mifflin branch. Taking an empty seat of the branch manager's office without any permission or qualification was not only unrealistic as hell it was als a complete dick move.
What’s wrong with post wall british wart chin?
I liked Andy as a manager. Deangelo, Robert California and Nellie were really unnecesarry in the show.
I am not in love with Ferrell, but he did good in the role. The issue was the writing was terrible for his character. He did his best for a dreadfully written character.
Actually, Will was said to have improvised much of his character. A lot of it was his fault.
I wasn’t really bothered much by him tbh but yeah I didn’t think it would’ve worked that well if he stayed long term. That juggling scene is still one of my all time favourite parts of the Office though.
Yeah, I was in hysterics at that. The bit where he pretends to bounce the ball off Phyllis' face was genius.
Agreed
I can’t be the only one who found him hilarious. The dog scene, juggling etc. I defend him
I feel bad for Will because he just did what they wanted.
Can someone please tell me the name of the song used in the background
Cruisin - Pacific
Which character though? He changes his personality in every episode he's in.
All the points in this video are really great. You should also do a video analysing season 9, and why it sucks.
Thanks a lot! Thats a good idea, I'll look into it!
I really enjoyed the Deangelo episodes. I think they did it right by having him only be in a few episodes.
I LOVED DeAngelo Vickers. I didn't know he was hated like this
Wholeheartedly disagree on all points. I think Will Ferrell fit in as a throwaway character, was meant to be hated and a terrible guy, and made for some pretty funny classic awkward Office moments.
That's how I felt about his character too. He's one of my least favorites, mainly because I enjoyed almost every character even more, but it was never hatred
I loathed Senator Lipton, and he surprisingly lasted for 3 seasons
the timing was wrong even if a throwaway character
I don't know, after season 5 the office Lost it
yea season 6 and 7 definitely had their moments but they didn't improve on anything from season 5.
true i've been marathon the office for the first time and i notice the cringe level is get amped up at season 3 (had to pause or take a break watching michael scott embarrassed himself but get used to it and love it) but the season 7 had a weird feeling to it. like what you said with dwight injure jim like that when dwight is the one who doing it first with that comment and jim had a fun way to get back at him but then it turned into creepy and dangerous thing.
and now im stuck where will ferrel come into the picture and i cant stand to watch it, not when michael got to part away :(
overall season 7 is very noticeable downhill from me, idk if i should continue finishing season 8 and 9 too.
@@momogi618 season 9 is the best of those later seasons, but nothing can top seasons 2-4
I like to think of D'Angelo as an statement: no one will ever replace Michael's place. This thought is immediately killed by Andy's character in season 8 and 9.
I liked Andy in Season 8 to be honest.
I quit watching the Office all together when his character was introduced. I still haven’t seen the remaining seasons lol
who are you that is so wise in the ways of science?
Watch the rest!! He only has a handful of episodes before they replace him with a new manager
You're not missing much, the rest is basically just switching managers, one worse than the other
He dies on his 4th episode
Watch the last 3 episodes they were alright
He killed the show for me. He was so awful that I bailed after season 7. When they announced that season 9 would be the last one, I watched the first episode and it was horrendous so I didn't bother watching anymore until the finale. I never saw season 8 and I have absolutely no desire to.
Every boss was bad after Michael and before Dwight
I think he was unlikable on purpose so that we get tricked into thinking any replacement will be better than him.
I think he was intended to be a disaster of a boss and was always meant to be killed. Just like Charles Miner was intended to be a straight serious character who destroys the integrity of the office, Deangelo was supposed to be a "oh shit. This isn't good .." character that you just cringe at how absurd everything is
It just kinda fell flat tho.
1:47 Alright, did anybody not think in their head "Isn't that what it's all about?"
It's pretty obvious will Ferrell was always only gonna be there for a few episodes. Takes two seconds to look it up as well
Deangelo was painfully unfunny and definitely one of the show's worst characters, and I agree the timing for him being introduced couldn't have been worse. His over-the-top singing during Michael's goodbye song was a glaring sign of how terribly misplaced he was. Each of his attempts at humor fell incredibly flat and was more cringe-inducing than anything. His presence is surely one of the show's low points.
Later seasons tried way too hard to make every character the funny quirky type. Also the way everyone needed a relationship story. It got so old.
I didn’t mind the character, might have felt differently if he had lasted longer. Nelly was the only one during the entire run that was absolutely insufferable. She served no purpose, I don’t know why she was ever on there to begin with.
Robert California wasn’t any better. I would have rather have seen Deangelo’s character developed more over what we ended up getting.
They definitely planned on replacing Michael with Deangelo. If they had, the show would’ve dropped off faster than The Simpsons after the ‘90s.
As bad as D'Angelo was, that nonsense speech he gives after getting crushed by the basketball hoop is one of the funniest moments in the entire show
This always happens when a major character leaves the show.
