The important thing about the conquest of America is not that they were the first to arrive, but that their arrival brought about a real change in the world.
@John Newman To immunize the population as soon as possible, it seems to me to be a positive thing, if they had not been infected they would have done so years later and a lot more people would have died.
Columbus in america did in fact discovered something to the outside world. Vikings went there but did not bring that knowledge or realized of that and such discovery remained lost until columbus. It wasnt until he went there that all in Europe Asia and Africa knew about America.
"‘I am firmly convinced that Spain is the strongest country of the world. Century after century trying to destroy herself and still no success" - Otto Von Bismark
0:43 The reason for the golden and red colors is simple and logical: they made the flag much more visible between ships at long distances at sea. Pretty useful for a seafaring culture such as the Spanish.
Animo!
bad connotations unfortunately mean that great symbols have to be removed. Even the peaceful swastika is now never seen that way again outside of Buddhist areas and some Native American symbols
It's a beautiful country run by dipshits who make their inhabitants act like assholes towards each other. But as I said, a wonderful country, with more pride than land.
Failures: 1: The purple band is for the "Comuneros" of Castille banner, that was thought to be purple (Today we know it was red), anyways it is still used as a protest flag. 2: The origins of the flag of aragon was the inspiration of the current flag, so you should search that, being a very nice and epic story. 3: The eagle of Franco is the eagle of San Juan, taking back the symbols of Elisabeth and Ferdinand (Also the symbols of the bottom). 4: Gibraltar may be under british rule, but is still claimed by Spain. Also the UN consider Gibraltar as a Non-self-governing territories, so a few years from now It will be back in Spain or become an independent country.
+Carlos García Palancar Lol, I didn't notice. BIG failure. Also he forgets the time where Spain and Portugal were together, From Phillip II to Phillip IV. I think that in England just doesnt learn this things, and all his videos are a little "pro-England". Just a feeling.
I read somewhere that the purple band, apart from the comuneros thing, was in representation of the city of madrid, hence the purple band that used to be in the real madrid badge until a few years ago
i wish my country of portugal had just stayed with Spain rather than go suck on English Oscar meyer weiners!! *BAD IDEA!* since we are now Broke, Poor, Weak, and eat Soups all day long, everyday!!
Gibraltar was given to the British by the French. If I remember correctly, they tried to take more land and Spain beat them out of all of it but the land they owed them. I noticed that in history, Spain almost always beats Britain, which is why England doesn't talk about them very much and instead focuses on France. Save for the armada, but they change the story so much, it no longer means anything. And Granada was mostly Christian by the 1300's. It remain as a vassal state. It was kinda fake.
Are you over-nationalist spanish or smth? England beat the shit out of the Spanish Armada and fucked up many Spanish ships with treasures inside during the 80 years war. The Dutch also basically stole everything form the portugese who were in union with spain so I'd call that loss pretty devastating. Also, how was Granada Christian? You mean the civilians? I'd like a link to show that if u can
I'm American. I study European history. Like I said in the original post, people only know about the Spanish Armada, because, well, history was written largely by the English. So what you know is carefully selected. What say you about the Counter Armada? Blaz de Lezo and his destruction of the entire English navy? The fact that Spain owned the Dutch throughout most of their early history? You seem to be unaware of these things by your tone. The Spanish eventually landed in Britain, by the way, after the Armada. Which caused a panic. In fact, they landed in Britain several times. And even owned England for a few years. Granada was largely a vassal state by the 1300's. It was already under Christian control well before it was officially killed off. And never even really spoke Arabic. They spoke Latin with some Arab lone words, called "Latina" by the Muslin converts who lived there.
John NoNameGibbon Oh boy the arrogance is uncalled for. Believe it or not I'm aware of the failed counter invasion, but in reality the Spanish loss devastated its navy, and its empire was on sharp decline ever since. The English on the other hand are the exact opposite. Their loss of this war led to the complete independence of the United Provinces since they no longer had any chance at sea, naval inferiority if you will. Spain only on held the Netherlands for 50 years, you might be confusing it with Belgium&part of france, luxembourg today, also known as the Spanish Netherlands (yep name is confusing but you can check it up if you want). The spanish didn't own England, not at all. It was before the Armada that Mary was married to the King of Spain but that wasn't even a proper personal union and it certainly didn't lat that long. I'm still looking for official link that say the majority of the popularity was becasue I want to see for myself where you got that from.
Ahura Mazda Well, then prepare for even more "arrogance". After the armada, Spain actually rebuilt its navy with even more advanced technology and kept going at the same rate it had been. Most historians actually agree that's a myth. That's like selectively ending the US Civil War at the Battle of Bull Run. It didn't decline because England was not the number one threat to Spain, they were actually at war with many _much_ more powerful nations that didn't have navies composed of glorified pirates. See? Your information is based in English myths. England never had any chance of a "counter invasion". It was actually a "counter attack". That would be like Canada "counter invading" the US. They weren't on equal footing at the time at all. Spain owned the entire Netherlands, until a chunk broke off. The parts that stayed Spanish were given different names. However, Spain owned the entirety from 1516 until around 1630-ish. And before the "personal union" argument, be aware that he, Charles, had been subjugating them with his Spanish military, magnates, and officials. Also, recite the Dutch National Anthem for me, real quick. What does it start with again? Something about a life-long loyalty to _who_ now? One important distinction, unlike England, Spain owned several wealthy Western European nations for a very long time. Something no other nation accomplished during the Modern Era. The best England could do was abuse hapless indigenous people in Africa and America. While Spain did that _and_ also to Europeans. As for Granada, did you know that after Las Navas de Tolosa, Spain took many cities within Granada, pocketed throughout?Meaning, on top of it already being a vassal state (Christian owned), many of the cities were themselves Christian. Just to give you a better picture, by the late 1200's Tarifa, the southern most city, was already Christian. My source is my own brain, sir. I read. You can look it all up if you have the interest. And the personal union with Mary didn't last that long but that doesn't change the fact that Philip of Spain did own England for, like I said, a few years.
John NoNameGibbon Ok this seems to be pointless as you refuse to give sources and plain out wrong and still reestablish the same thing i pointed out wrong without any proof. Also you don't seem to know what the concept of knowing is. King jure uxoris doesn't own the country his wife rules over. But whatever, arrogant and ignorant, the best combination.
It must be pointed out that the town of Gibraltar was never included in the Treaty of Utrecht (only the rock was) and that these 30000 British citizens statement is a consequence of unilateral illegal action by Britain, if one is accurate.
***** Just commenting about the legality, I know everything comes down to military/diplomatic power. Btw, define British. Last time I went to Britain, few areas remained what could be called British, unless you understand Britain as a sort of Commonwealth of Africa.
Spain is known to be one of the gates to drugs into Europe. Do not forget the huge cocaine empire in Galiza. Thx to which our national-catholic mafia has become so much rich and powerful.
Yes, I think we must say it. So It coms from Isabel and Fernando, and It comes too, from Saint Jhons the evangelist symbol, the eagle. Thats what it's called "Aguila de San Juan" (Saints Jhon's Eagle) You can see It at the floor of Spanish Ambassy at Rome. So IT ISN'T the fascist eagle!
@@Nefarivs He says so in the video. He just makes a joke about the similarity with the fascist symbols. And in that flag IT IS a fascist symbol because it represent a facist dictatorship. Even if the original is not this one is.
@Nep Nep Historians qualify Franco's regime as authoritarian conservative and national catholicism. Franco actually hated Hitler and Mussolini and wasn't very cool with the Falange, the spanish fascist party.
The swastika came from simbology for the sun. The origins of a symbol don't change what it becomes into. La bandera del pollo is a symbol of fascism. Actually very interesting fact.
The pillars with the words: "plus ultra" means the territories that where beyond the cape of Finisterre, in Galicia, where Hercules put the pillars as a symbol of the end of the world, in other words, mean the American discover, not Gibraltar.
The reason that the Basque Country it's not represented in the current Spanish flag is because the Basque Country was part of the original Kingdom of Navarre which includes both sides of the Pyrenees of today's Spain and France where Basque is still spoken to this day.
@@jardindorado the Basque Country belonged to Navarre before Castille annexed it. First Alava, then Biscay and finally Gipuzcoa. After that, Castille took control over what was left of the Kingdom of Navarre
Franco was an ally (more like the pet) of Hitler and Mussolini. Mussolini tested out real fine all of his planes dropping bombs 'round the city of Barcelona for days at a time, for an example.
@@megatrix500 Yeah. A fucking pet. That's why he denied operation Felix, didn't help Axis during WW2(except division azul and market deals) even after first Hitler's struggles in 42, after Stalingrad. Very bad pet and ally, I should say. Maybe because he wasn't their pet and ally, and he just used them in his interests? They helped him in Civil War, they bought his materials, and still they couldn't force him to finally join them. Turns out Franco was a great politician and leader of Spain who created great economy and culture.
Regardless of anything, I cannot change history and therefor I thank and appreciate the Spanish for discovering the new world and for leaving their bloodline here. #ArribaEspana #ArribaMexico
+JC D’vain you do realize what that guy meant by "lines of blood" and you being proud of that mean you are ok you the genocide committed againts mexican people.
Mario Mendivil If it wasn't for their "genocide", we wouldn't be enjoying everything we have today. Anyway, I'm proud of our Spanish ancestry, as I said before.
The English Armada" written by Luis Gorrochategui Santos (Translated by Peter J. Gold).
Vikings don't know where they are, the world knows that's a new continent just since 16's century. OMG the explication of this video. 😂

@@anacasanova7350 Vamos a ver.

The bull flag really represent the Osborne brand, in the Spanish roads there many bulls in the hills with this advertisement. Then the bull of Osborne was a symbol of the Spanish landscape and now it's very famous in the world likes a Spanish symbols.

I miss you mention a part of the history of Spain during her reign of Philip II. The union of the English and Spanish monarchies. Philip II of Spain and Mary I of England. 25-July-1554. In general terms I can agree, but... * No one can say Aragon was austracist. This is not true. Austracists and borbonic supporters were in the whole Spain, including Aragon. This is the fact (that you can find with ease). * Of course Spain (Castilla, really) discovered America. Others simply arrived there, including japanese people, as DNA studies show, without any knowdlege about where they were. * Spain is not a Kingdom of kingdoms, as the UK is. The sources of Spain are the roman empire Hispania province (maybe the most important province) and its sucessor, the Visigothic Hispania, ruled from Toledo. After the Umayyad (Omeya) conquest of Hispania, the Kingdom of Asturias (visigoths, obviously) started the "reconquista" to recover the former Hispania. The idea of Hispania as the whole Iberic territory was in his minds, as today is in ours, including our Portuguese brothers (Lisboa was taken by the asturian king Alfonso VII in 1147). Some day, in the future, Spain and Portugal will be a politic entity, I hope and desire. * Last, but not less important. The eagle of San Juan, present in our flag during Franco's regime, is part of the Queen Isabel heraldic shield (as you can find with ease) and was also part of the heraldic shield of the Catholic Kings, Isabel and Fernando, (as you can find with ease). The eagle of San Juan has a religious meaning, and is not related in any sense with the germanic double headed eagles (as you can find with ease). Thank you for trying.
+RealLifeLore You made one hell of a mistake when you were talking about the U.K. There are FOUR countries that make up Great Britain; England, WALES, Scotland and N. Ireland. Wales is a fully formed, well developed country which deserves a mention as well as any other European country. Do some more research next time.
Potassium Dichromate, Wales it's a principality NOT a country. Throughout history it has been regarded as part of the kingdom of England and has not properly gained country status.
3:58 Fail. Not Philip II, Charles II. 5:03 Purple on 2nd republic represents a liberal society in the 19th century who used this colour inspired in the Comuneros uprising banner. But was a fail aswell because Comuneros used the Crimson colour for their flag.
Portugal and Spain were two different nations. Spain invaded Portugal several times until XVI century. Spain always invade things. It's in its DNA I suppose. Spain was like the medieval United States. Luckly, time puts things togheter and now Portugal is an independent state. That gives us Catalan ppl hope. We hope that someday time will put ourselves apart, as we are to be.
Just one small remark. The difference with United Kingdom is that in UK, Scottland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland still exist with a simillar configuration. Castile, Aragon, Navarra and Granada don´t exist anymore as such. I mean, there are no four national identities anymore that gather to form a "United Kingdom of Spain". We have still some remainings of the ancient kingdoms in the form of independentists or nationalists, but most of people in Spain consider themselves just spanish (although sometimes they can love their local regions even more which also happens)
you just went to castile spain, go to catalonia or basque country and you will see only nationalist flags, the crowns doens't exist, but still a large groups of nationalist, ETA wasn't a joke. Check the map of votes in the elections in spain and you will see the diferrences betwen the country.
But they were not kingdoms Have you heard about the catalonian kingdom or the basque kingdom in the video?? they were part of aragon´s kingdom and the navarre kingdom is like a part of scotland say fuck it I´m going for my independence and say that they were the true scots and the rest are english oppressors.
Very nice video, but there is a major mistake, the king wasn't proclaimed after Franco died, the king was proclaimed by Franco a few years before he died
Der Kaiser that's what is wrong with Spain they're fucking imperialist I thinks it's one of the few countries were monarchy returned twice wtf why do we even need a king?
It was still the Monarchies choice to give the people democracy, giving the people full control of the government, if the people didn't want the monarchy they would have gotten rid of it then and there
Why don't you say the people's original names? Like Isabel, Felipe, Carlos, Fernando, etc. Good video by the way, our history is very complicated and irregular.
In spanish you don´t say "La reina Elisabeth II de inglaterra" they say Isabella, Phillip, Charles...
Theres NOTHING in our spanish flag that represents Gibraltar , those columns represent that the world thouhgt the end of the world was at the end of spain and there were 2 columns sain "non plus ultra" wich means "there`s nothing farther" and because of we descovered that there was another continent and the world was round we changed the columns and put "plus ultra" wich means ther`s more farther than here.

There's a rule about translating names. All names before Illustration are used translated because of historical facts, with a couple of exceptions. Cities, countries, people's names after that period of time must remain as they are in their original language (again, with a couple of exceptions).
The columns of the 'Plus Ultra' are not representing Gibraltar. Although Spain claims the territory, those columns older than even Carlos I (V of Germany), much before there was any controversy on Gibraltar. They represent the extension that the Spanish Empire once had (it means something like "further and beyond"). Actually it's not even close to meaning anything about Gibraltar. The symbolism behind the columns comes from roman times, when they considered the Galician territory of Finisterre to be the end of the Earth (It's the most occidental point of the European Continent), and represented it with columns in their mithology, which if you were to pass further you'd enter other realms (the so called Macaronesia or places where the gods went to rest: Canary Islands, Azores Islands....). Moving such symbolism to Gibraltar was not of spanish doing. It never intended to mean that region, as it wasn't that much of a deal back then.
Phillip the Handsome was probably more handsome than the painting shows. Either that or he did look like that and that was considered handsome back then
At 5:18, you used the pictures of the fascist dictators of Germany and Italy, yet you used the flag of Portugal instead of the picture of the fascist dictator of Portugal. Why? And then later at 5:50 you said that after 1945 all dictatorships were over in western europe except for his, which is a lie, since Portugal was still a fascist dictatorship which only ended in 1974.
Hi there, awesome video! Learned a lot about Spain in just a few minutes. You explain it very well, much like Cody from AlternateHistoryHub and GeographyHub would. Something is bugging me though, and being someone who knows at least a few things about audio I will try to give you some advice. While I'm sure you already did a ton of audio editing to achieve the solid voiceover some parts can be improved on. There's a solid hum in the audio from about 52 seconds in. I downloaded the video as an audio file to analyse the spectrum and found you have either very terrible resonance in your microphone, or just a really unlucky issue with the background music. To fix this (and as an overall tip to decrease nasalness) I would advise lowering everything from 80 Hertz and below by about -24db and slowly ramp that up to -0 by the time it reaches 250 Hertz. Since I could not quite locate the hum I made a quick guess on harmonics and placed a De-Hummer on three harmonics of 60 Hertz - which did the trick quite nicely. Since this is an educational video, I would also suggest cutting most of the bass from the music to make more room for the voiceover. Generally a hard cut at 55 Hertz will clear most of the rumbling basses that can be distracting the viewer (or listener) from the actual content. As a final thought, the background music gets too much foreground time on some parts of the video. I would suggest dynamically lowering the volume of parts where the music would originally go in crescendo to avoid a bullfight with the voiceover (pun intended). All in all, a great video! Some audio "issues" can be improved on, but hey I'm here to help! If you want to take a listen to the edited audio, here's a link to cross-reference it: www65.zippyshare.com/v/zVw8KyGh/file.html
I was in spain (Barcelona) 2 days ago, Greetings from France to my Spanish Friends and Catalan people ! (I even bought a beautiful spanish and Catalonian flag)
Overall it's a great video. It's educative and it has a high quality, but there's still some room for improvement: -XVIII century Spanish Navy flag comes from the Aragonese Crown colors -Since you used the flags of fascist Italy and Germany (which was a good point) to represent they aided Spanish fascist, you should have added the flag of fascist Portugal as well. Modern day Germans, Italians AND Portuguese alike may find disgusting to do it otherwise. -You should have added that the Spanish Monarchy was restored due to the will of Franco and the fascist government. Not doing so makes the previous Spanish King like a democrat, when he swore over the 'principles of the [fascist] Movement'. If he accepted taking a part in the Transition, was to aid the economic ruling class to join the European Union and make more profitable business, not because he believed in democracy.
Portugal never had a "fascist flag", we still used the current one. You might be thinking about the symbol of the Estado Novo (New State), the Fascist/Salazarist party in command.
Yeah, umm, Joanna of Castile wasn't really mad, it was a conspiration. The court members said she was to in an attempt to avoid another female monarch ruling in Castile. Back then the society was really mysogine so no one wanted Joanna as queen. Also the Catholic Kings had a legitime son called John (The Prince of Asturias) however he had a bad health and he died young, in 1497. So the issue of the Hispanic Crown was left around there and the Austrians took the chance.

We brought shit back. That's the important point
Columbus in america did in fact discovered something to the outside world. Vikings went there but did not bring that knowledge or realized of that and such discovery remained lost until columbus. It wasnt until he went there that all in Europe Asia and Africa knew about America.

Failures:
1: The purple band is for the "Comuneros" of Castille banner, that was thought to be purple (Today we know it was red), anyways it is still used as a protest flag.
Also Spain's last Habsburg was Charles II (El Hechizado) and not Phillip II
+Carlos García Palancar Lol, I didn't notice. BIG failure.
Also he forgets the time where Spain and Portugal were together, From Phillip II to Phillip IV.
I think that in England just doesnt learn this things, and all his videos are a little "pro-England". Just a feeling.
I read somewhere that the purple band, apart from the comuneros thing, was in representation of the city of madrid, hence the purple band that used to be in the real madrid badge until a few years ago

The eagle in the facist flag actually comes from the catholic kings (Reyes catolicos) not from other facist regimes

Thats what it's called "Aguila de San Juan" (Saints Jhon's Eagle)

@@anacasanova7350 Vamos a ver.

We have still some remainings of the ancient kingdoms in the form of independentists or nationalists, but most of people in Spain consider themselves just spanish (although sometimes they can love their local regions even more which also happens)
i dont think so
It's like that all over Latin America too, but we all see ourselves as our respective country.
you just went to castile spain, go to catalonia or basque country and you will see only nationalist flags, the crowns doens't exist, but still a large groups of nationalist, ETA wasn't a joke.
Check the map of votes in the elections in spain and you will see the diferrences betwen the country.
ETA, Terra Lliure or the Fighters of King Christ

If it wasn't for the Spanish monarchy Spain would be a dictatorship, the monarchy saved spain twice from tyranny
Thats false xd There is a monarchy because the dictator Franco wants that. Spanish people didn´t vote that.

Pues no seras español, yo aquí en España siempre he oído Isabel II

The last habsburg king of Spain was Charles II, not Philip II. You got the photo right tho.

Por favor, citas? / Quotes, Please?

At 3:57, it says the last king of habsburg spain was philip ii, but it was really charles ii "the bewitched" who is also depicted in the painting
Where's the Kingdom of Sicily? It was ruled by the aragonese crown

Zippy Thresher damn, you're so intelligent that you caught me!! I dont need anyone to think I am intelligent nor anything like that since I dont care what ppl who I dont know think about me, people like you.
No, actually the Kingdom of Sicily was represented in the spanish flag when it was ruled by Spain.
Gibraltar is fucked with Brexit so we the spaniards are gonna have some good laughs with their commercial and economic situation now :D
Not really. The UK is still in a better economic situation than us.

Ismael Escobar Amine We'll see. Some people are exxagerating the effects of brexit, in my opinion. I bet they'll end up with a free trade agreement like Norway or Switzerland.
jmiquelmb Well, Spain is gonna enjoy bullying Gibraltar. Because 60% of Gibraltar population lifes in Spain and go to work to Gibraltar, also they use the healthcare spanish system that by the way it"s free for everyone. They won't be allowed to do that anymore. So.... Gibraltar is fucked up.
MARIO Rodríguez González They're not their population if they live in Spain. And I'd assume that they'll still be working there, unless Spain wants to raise the unemployment rate. Don't know about the healthcare, I'd rather have some data than believing rumors.
I think it's stupid to have this petty confrontations. I don't want Spaniards or Britons any bad. Y lo digo como ciudadano español.

JT T completely agree. Listen northern buddies, when it's 45°C and you can get a heatstroke for being outside, it's better to have a little nap, or some quiet time inside, than you can stay up longer after. That is why we do it, not because of anything else. (I'm from Andalucia, and I cannot say if this apply to other regions, for there are different kinds of weathers)
But bullfighting is traditional in Spain either you like it or not.

Love spain from denmark🇩🇰🇩🇰🇪🇸🇪🇸
🇪🇦❤️🇩🇰
Just to let you know, your Spanish map is incomplete. The Canary islands, ceuta and Melilla also exist, so yeah not very nice.
Canarias and Ceuta and Melilla they are not colonies and they are not to far for maindland.
***** You are wrong. The Canaries, Ceuta and Melilla are provinces of Spain, not colonies. They have never been considered as colonies. You don't have idea of what your are talking about, just shut it.
Btw, it just takes one hour to go from The Canaries to the mainland by plane.
***** haha you are crazy, dude! Where are you from? Please tell me you are not Spanish, that would be just too much for me hahaha. Btw, you should look up the meaning of "colony" in the dictionary.
***** Well, you didn't answer my question, so... Where are you from? So far I just know you don't speak Spanish, so let me tell you that, that guy who wrote a comment in Spanish, he roasted you so well hahaha. Btw, I asked you to look it up in English, the language we are speaking in, not in Spanish. Maaan just accept you were wrong when you said that these territories are colonies.
You can't translate names Joanna is really Juana "La loca"
There's a rule about translating names. All names before Illustration are used translated because of historical facts, with a couple of exceptions. Cities, countries, people's names after that period of time must remain as they are in their original language (again, with a couple of exceptions).
ohh okay thanks! did not know that
The columns of the 'Plus Ultra' are not representing Gibraltar.
2:44 There was a point in time where if you saw this flag while in the sea, prepare to shit yourself
Phillip the Handsome was probably more handsome than the painting shows. Either that or he did look like that and that was considered handsome back then
He was handsome to the medieval age as the white wig was fashion at 1800.
He was also severely inbred.
If you want to take a listen to the edited audio, here's a link to cross-reference it: www65.zippyshare.com/v/zVw8KyGh/file.html
you forgot to put the canary islands in your map but anyway a good video

Overall it's a great video. It's educative and it has a high quality, but there's still some room for improvement:
-XVIII century Spanish Navy flag comes from the Aragonese Crown colors
-Since you used the flags of fascist Italy and Germany (which was a good point) to represent they aided Spanish fascist, you should have added the flag of fascist Portugal as well.
