That settings is to correct the ETA and Location accuracy while driving. Unfortunately it will NOT correct the speedometer or the odometer. I’ve verified this with Toyota engineering. It is strictly for travel speed and ETA accuracy in the Nav system.
Hmm...that doesn’t make sense to me🤔. Wouldn’t that be calculated by how fast the vehicle is moving and vehicle location per GPS tracking? I mean if you trailered the truck somewhere and turn on the navigation...it’s going to show where you are not dependent upon what tire you’re running🤔
RobMotive I agree, would make more sense but the way is was explained to me the NAV system tracks distance and speed off the GPS and why it is Calibrated I don’t know. Seems dumb.
Weird🤔
Change to correct gear by size of tire ?
By doing what you advocate, you are simply changing the GPS reading, not the odometer settings of the vehicle. Your Speedo can read X and your GPS’ speed can read Y... Completely different. You showed this in your video... GPS speed vs Odometer speed...
Wonder if that navigation setting is just resetting the navigation? That way it knows how many miles you have traveled and how close you are to your next exit and so forth. I know it reads the position of the vehicle but maybe it also has tire size to more accurately predict how far exits and roads are.
Could be? I looked in the manual and couldn’t find anything on it. It doesn’t make sense to me🤔
Toyota should have had a speed calibration where the user would simply input their rim and tire size. They could get it close with a simple calculation.
I agree. Especially given the number of people who mod their trucks👍
This procedure does work give it a couple of days I change the tires on my 2016 Tacoma I was showing 2 miles an hour slower than I actually was going now I am back to mobile
hello throbbnation!!I'm doing better and feeling great.havent smoked in 12days,strict diet,walking a mile a day.on my way back up😊
Hey John!!!! That’s all AWESOME!! Very glad to hear you’re recovery is going well!!!! Good deal 👍👍
+RobMotive ,thanks brother!!!
+El Paso ,thanks you sir.its been a battle (3 arteries clogged, 2 catheters)but I'm doing better🖒
As it is your warranty last longer cause your not regeristing as many miles as you putting on it
Ha! Now there’s an added benefit👍
Toyota no longer uses that Navigation system. They stopped it in 2023.
That’s good. No need with Google Maps.
If the TPMS sensors are replaced on 2022 Tacoma (3rd Gen) with new OEM sensors, will they get automatically picked up or do they need to be programmed?
Typically any replacement sensor has to be initialized.
Just get a Hypertech speedometer calibrator. It will fix it. I can’t deal with an inaccurate speedo or odometer. I did mine the day I did my tires.
It does bug me! I’ll have to check it out👍
EngineeringExplained has a video on the HyperTech calibrator
this setting is for the tire sensors after you rotate or get new tires....
Even if it did work, there is no way it would recalibrate the abs, which in itself, makes a calibrater WELL worth the money in any slippery conditions. FYI
I'm new to your channel and didn't realize this was you. I thought oh cool his son has a channel too. From one old dude to another keep up the good info. 👍
Lol! Thanks for coming👍 (From me and my son😂)
Tire calibration is a bit more involved process. Dealers won't touch it. In fact they will tell you it can't be done. My Tacoma straight out of the box seemed to be 2 to 3 mph off with stock wheels.
There’s always a tolerance (+\-) for sure. Mine was just a bit off to begin with too I’m sure.
Did you check your speedometer calibration before the tire change? Most of my cars would read a 2-4mph higher than my actual speed.
I didn’t. However I have checked the Honda and it’s spot on with the GPS App I’m using.
RobMotive that’s interesting. Whenever I pass by one of the radar school signs that tells me to slow down I’m usually 2mph slower than indicated on my 19 Civic Si. With 245 series tires on my 13 wrx it’s spot on.
Good luck with the calibration
I’ll prob just leave it as is. Can’t see spending $200 just for 2-3mph!!
RobMotive and you’ll rack up fewer miles meaning you’ll save on some depreciation
Any GPS is going to be slower to respond to changes than your speedometer. Maybe you could set the cruise control and see how the gps corresponds.
Oddly enough, my truck came 1-2 MPH off with stock tires but is dead on with my 1" taller BFGs.
That’s excellent. Mine is off the typical 2-3 mph.
I believe my friend you need a programmer. the only other way than the programmer is to take it into the factory or a shop to get recalibrate. Great video once again. Also some of the new high end OBD scanners have parameter resets in them that will allow you to change tire size and should have live feedback so you can test drive and test speedometer speed.
Yup, I agree 👍. I may need to check out a scanner with calibration capability 🤔
I’ve been told by the dealer that the factory can not and will not program your vehicle to a new tire size. From my research, it must be done with 3rd party devices.
Hmm...good to know. Thanks for the tip 👍
@@j0shll0yd , Some will some won't also depends on where you live and whether or not it is legal for them to do so. I look at it this way, why not pick up a tool that would allow me to fix it in the future myself and not need me to pay others to do it. Also those scan tools and programmers have so much more capabilities to offer.
On my 2018 the manual for the navigation system says on P 254 says if this is not done the position mark may not be displayed correctly. So it sounds like this does only the navigation system, and nothing else.
Seems so. Not exactly sure how that works🤔
Rob, what were the measures of your factory tires and how your new ones. My factory on my f150 is 275/55R20 and I'm considering getting 275/60 ridge grapplers. So not any wider and just a little taller. Curious as to how it will affect my truck.
I don’t recall tbh. If you go taller you will be affected👍
Do you know if the air pressure reset you are speaking about is the same way in a Tundra? Thx
I believe so 👍
From the factory both my 4Runner and my Tacoma neither the gps and my speedometer ever matched speed, the gps has alway been slower by two mph’s.
Comparing the gps of a phone to vehicle speed is never going to be 100 percent the same.
When the vehicle is correctly calibrated it’s very close👍
Nice video. Hope you figure out an easy fix.
We’ll see🤔. May just be GPS on my phone😁
Did you have to reset/recalibrate the new Tire Pressure Monitor Sensor for your new wheel?
You have to initiate the new sensors if you don’t use the originals. Otherwise no.
My 2021 does exactly the opposite - the speedo indicates 2-3 mph faster than my actual speed per GPS.
I hear that occasionally but very rare😬
Good info! When you switched to bigger tires and rims did they use the same tps valves from your old tires or install all new?
Same valves👍
@@RobMotive Did you have to reset the TPMS warning light? I installed bigger tires on my stock rims and the TPMS warning light just won't reset. How did you reset it?
I did not. You should have a reset button in front of your knees👍
@@RobMotive Tried that a few times and it's not reseting.
Are you sure your sensors are active?
I do have a question not regarding the video. When you changed Tires, did you inflate by using the vehicle tag on the door jam, or the Tire wall suggested guide? Thanks.
Neither. I run 36psi👍
Thanks for your quick response.
36 cold, right??
Yup. Always check and fill cold👍
I’m okay driving below the speed limit, over the speed limit will be a problem
Yup! That’s always the problem!!!!😁
Hey Rob! I just ran into this video while searching for how to recalibrate for larger tires. I see that it didn't really work. How about on your new 2020 Tacoma. Did you try it there? How is your speedometer reading vs your 33" tires? Thanks!
Nope. I’m off 3-5 mph depending on speed😬
@@RobMotive Got you! Thanks for the quick reply Rob!
Late catching this video but agree with another comment, larger tires require lower pressure unless you really have a load on it.
How low do you think?
@@RobMotive depends on tire. Tread should contact all the way across, there are forums discussing using chalk to check thread contact. Too much air will cause center to wear premature. I am currently running 33s about 30 lbs up front and 29 in rear. Enjoy your vids and good luck with your 2020 order, I'm waiting on the same.
I agree, 41 is probably too high. I have a 5th gen 4Runner with 285/70r17s load range D, and I had center wear at 45 psi. I dropped down to 35 for more even wear.
The first thing to confirm before deciding on a tire psi is whether you put 4 ply, 6 ply, 8 or 10 ply tires on your truck. Putting 10 ply tires or load range E can give you a hard ride and usually call for max 80 psi. Don't do it on a Tacoma! Go 10 psi more than rating on door jamb. I went with 285/70R17 Wildpeak AT 4ply tires and get a good soft ride and use 5 psi over stock.
I used to sell Hypertech programmers for diesels, quality stuff.. they offer a module you can run behind the instrument cluster to calibrate speedo. might be the only way to do it.
I’ve heard you can get calibration units or take it to the dealer. Somewhere in the neighborhood of $200. Too much I think🤔
RobMotive prior to having my lift installed, I discussed this with my dealer and they actually recommended a place to me and said only take it to them so that my warranty stays intact. So I took it to “Tacoma Speedometer” and they had my truck for 40 minutes, changed out a sensor chip and my speed is dead on again. It’s was $100, too me I thought that was very fair.
That’s not too bad. I’d probably spend $100👍
@@tundrawhisperer4821 0e3
Dan D. Not sure what this means??
I'm trying to figure out how to make my transmission stay in 6th gear. I can drive 70 or 80 or 90 and the transmission will shift to 6th and then it shifts back to 5th again. My fuel mileage goes down to about 12 MPG because of this. I put 265/75/16 tires on it and that is only a 1 inch taller than stock difference. I haven't heard anyone else talk about it
You’d have to tune to do that.
Sounds to me, you may need a Throttle reset. Look for it on YT.
Every car I’ve been in has shown 2 mph slower than a gps or gps on a phone. I think they do it on purpose so no one can try to get them to pay a speeding ticket.
Hmm..Interesting theory🤔
Hi Rob, have you any solutions on how to fix this? I just changed my tire size on my 2021 TRD sport.
There are software solutions you can buy or some dealers will recalibrate for around $200 I’ve heard.
@@RobMotive I've been researching one from rough country.
@@RobMotive good reason to not use Toyota service unless necessary..
It’s pretty close tho not bad nothing is perfect for free
Close enough.
See Toyota was out testing what appears to be an updated Tundra?
I saw that. Hard to see much in the spy shots. Appears pretty similar on the outside. Can’t wait to see what/if they do with it🤔
Did you ever get it calibrated?
Nope...I’m too cheap!!😁
That “calibration” is only for the navigation
Seems so. I wonder what it does?
It calibrates the compass only.
You only need to drive around in a 360 motion to recalibrate.
Why did you go from the Tundra to the Tacoma - ?
The Tundra simply would not fit in the garage at my new place with the mods I wanted to do (lift, tires, etc). The Tacoma kept me in the Toyota family and allows for the mods I wanted. Plus...I do like the Tacoma👍
@@RobMotive O I C
The reason I asked is because I watched one of your older videos with the Tundra, and did it look and sound good.
FYI, I prefer the Taco.
The Tundra I had was a great truck. Just didn’t suit my needs and the direction I wanted to go👍
You have to change the speedometer sensor or speedo gear on older vehicles in relation to tire size.
That sounds expensive 🤔
Doubt it’s the same as an ‘87🤔
Run bigger tires.... don’t calibrate.... less miles on the truck when you sell it lol
That would be true👍
I would watch more of your videos but your sound quality is annoying. You need to get a better mic or something.
Hmm....what does it sound like?
The speedo uses the wheel speed sensors
👍
Use an actual gps phone aren't that accurate.
Mine was spot on👍
