Please never ever change your intro music. For some reason it brings me back 12 years and feel nostalgic. Not only that but your whole channel is amazing. You have an amazing voice to.
I remember hearing about plainsrunning in 2005 and the long-standing myth about it at the time was that Tauren players in beta would get on all four legs like Worgen and run around. Pretty amusing mental image.
you know MadSeasonShow your vids about the old world of warcraft make my day. So many great momories and things a I didn't even know. you are a great youtuber!
The so-called Blackwater Auction House was a linked auction house system for the four goblin cities: Gadgetzan, Everlook, Ratchet, and Booty Bay. I don't know when it was implemented, or if it also started off unlinked, but during vanilla, it was the only way for Alliance and Horde characters to trade, and it was a great way to unload your fancy greens and trade goods when you're far from your capital cities. (Just remember that the deposit fee and the market cut were much worse!) At some point many years later, the Blackwater Auction House got merged into the faction auction houses, and then into the unified auction house we have today. Makes me wish that those goblin towns were full-fledged cities in their own right. Also makes me wish goblin towns introduced in later expansions, like Area 52, were new factions of the Steamwheedle Cartel and just as interesting and involved as the four goblin factions of vanilla.
If I recall correctly shaman originally also used bucklers, but were upgraded to shields when they combined bucklers and shields removing them from rogues and hunters. Some of the quest rewards for shields at release still reflected notably lower defense for their level as a throwback to having been bucklers originally.
Patch History videos are the best! I spend a lot of time on reading the notes, but hearing it with actual video content can't beat that. Keep it up man!
How do you get such smooth scrolling with your videos? I'm trying to get a similar type of scroll in some of my videos, but when I'm recording myself playing the game for my video footage the movement is choppy. Not because of GPU limitations, but because the mouse movement is choppy. Is there a setting I'm not aware of? This is my favorite series by the way. Keep going with these. They're awesome.
One more thing about the rested experience system - I heard that back then, tired/exhausted xp was removed and replaced with normal xp just as a psychological measure. Players don't like to be punished for playing the game, so they still got the same amout of xp, but it was framed differently.
Hey mate. Saying g’day from Australia. Something I want to say real quick. I’ve been dealing with depression for a while now and on my bad days these videos always give me an escape to something familiar. The way you discribe things, and the music and effort you put into your videos offer me a time to switch off and relax and remember some of my fondest memories from back in the day. These videos low-key keep me going on some of my hardest days. A massive thank you for the effort you put into producing these and sharing some of your memories. Please keep it up, it means a fair bit to me. Peace :)
Jesus christ. I barely get time to skim-read the title of your freshest video before the tape is already rolling on my screen and that goosebumps-inducing intro hits me. I'm left with a mess in my underwear but I am relaxed, and happy. God bless this channel.
Dear madseason show. What i sure remember in the early days, there used to be a single AH per faction. IF for alliance and Org. For horde. Love your videos. You are by far my favourite streamer
I also distinctly remember there being unlinked auction houses in all major cities, because at some point in the middle of vanilla, I remember reading patch notes for linked, unified auction houses in all major cities. I even want to say that an old vanilla WoW podcast, Taverncast, talked about this in one of their earliest episodes.
Just wanted to let u know that i really enjoy all of ur videos. U actually made me return to this great great game which is consuming all my free time again ;D Keep up the good work greetz from germany
I remember that linked nonsense xD if you visit tge forum there is a thread on battlenet about things people ask for the upcoming legacy realms and the auction house unliked system is discussed in depth there, great video as always man you bring lots of nostalgia to hour work
I really enjoy this series. It's great background for the upcoming Classic, and I hope you will consider continuing processing patch notes up to whatever version we'll end up with. Sure we can read the patch notes, but it's so much added value to hear someone like you detailing interesting stuff, with your long history of the game and in-depth knowledge. :)
Unlinked auction houses is how Ironforge became the main hub were everyone hung out. It was the most central place. And Darnasus AH became the place were you could instantly trade things to different characters. I remember a friend telling me he would troll the AH in Darnasus to try and nab something for 30 copper that someone was trying to give to another toon on the same account. He had some pretty amazing gear lol
Loving these videos. Kinda suprised that darned rogue didn't come by and sap you during your outro. (Would make a perfect running gag to these vids imho.) Darn rogues! Lol
Oh my god i remember that Tauren Swifthoof character always being dead on the roads and i never knew why she was in the game since i never saw any quests for her. Nice learning something new every video :D
OMG I was going to say the same damn thing about an auction house for each city. I KNOW this was the case. I remember it and I was surprised when you said they took it out before release. MANDELA EFFECT!?
Another great video, as always - thanks MadSeason! Just a personal wish imma throw out there: I'd love if you made a 'Classic/Vanilla' video where you go over the looks and animations of each race and both genders, and maybe throw in some end gear for each spec! This would mean a lot to me since I'll have just one character and spend so many hours with it, and no one has made a video like this. But if you never read this comment I'll love you and your content as always, have a good one!
For a short time there was a bug that would cause her to attack warlock pets (and maybe hunter pets?) causing my 35'sh lock to get flagged for pvp at some of the worst times. Ah good times :)
One note about the Eternal Quintessence that you get at Revered with Hydraxian Waterlords: They didn't actually implement it until Patch 1.11.0 (the Naxx patch). So all through BWL and AQ progression you'd still have to go out to Azshara for the normal consumable Aqual Quintessence every week.
I remember unlinked AHs as well. A patch or lag stopped it from working as intended . They hot fixed it during maintenance so no patch notes on it. Hot fixes at that time were only internally documented.
You could make good money trading between SW/IF to Darn, there were quest items and materials needed for that zone. However most people traded in SW, you could actually be a traveling merchant moving items between the city’s.
I remember the unlinked AH's from very early in Vanilla. It was changed pretty quickly afterwards. But thats what helped Ironforge become the major over Stormwind. SW was great, but its AH wasnt as massively populated as the IF one was. IF ended up sort of "sticking" as the main hub even after they linked them.
That, and being so close to both Blackrock Mountain and Menethil. I'm still surprised on private servers to see folks in Stormwind; used to it being pretty underpopulated in vanilla.
@@erdrickcapet3945 oh yeah thats a good point, the quick proximity to boats that take you across to the other continent probably contributed a lot too.
Also the lack of global chat for LFG meant people congregated there to find groups (this could be skipped if you knew how to remotely join chat channels for other zones though, but very few people knew how)
I was a Wrath baby and still remember for some reason, that the auction houses had different stuff in them, because I had to go to Exodar, AND THEN find the damn AH, and that frustration I had looking for it, is very clear.
Paused at 2:12 - I was confused when you said that they removed separate auction houses before full release because I too remember that they were separated for quite some time. I started playing in October of 2005 (EU). I remember being so happy to be playing a mage at that time and all of my friends were happy too because of the portals. (Having teleport to towns was actually the main reason I chose mage class as my main - I had a hunch traveling would take up a lot of playing time :) ).
I remember the different AH's as well. Clear as day, we used to talk about how useless the rest of the AH's were since everyone use the one in the capitol city. And I remember the day they combined them into a linked AH system, we were very excited about this, because you could now hang out in the more quiet cities. And this also populated places like under city, witch was until then quite barren.
The fact that you included a Legend of Zelda song in the background solidified my decision to subscribe and follow you. Absolutely beautiful content, as usual.
I confirm the unlinked auction houses in vanilla! As a mage I travelled to Thunder Bluff to check! There was very little compared to Orgrimmar, but deals could be found.
Separate auction houses were definitely a thing in vanilla. I also played Star Wars Galaxies, so I was kind of used to having to travel to get an item. I also don't remember exactly when they get connected, but I do remember being excited about it.
So...it's been about a month since the last Patch video, just saying ;) Whether we get it next week or in April, I will be excited either way (but please don't make me wait that long lol). This is a great review for me. I remember watching the official website for months before release, imagining what class I would play, reading through the patch notes even though I wasn't in the beta. Then, one day, I saw that they were having their first open beta, so I signed up that very second. Only to spend almost 3 solid days downloading the game over dial-up lol! I made it to about level 12 on my beta Human Paladin, clearing out the entirety of Elwynn but getting stomped by the Harvest Golems in Westfall, loving every second of it. There was then only a day or so left in the beta so I rolled an Orc Warrior just to see a new zone and try a different class. Fortunately I logged back onto my Human just before going to bed, so I got to see a massive Infernal just wrecking everything in the open beta-pocalypse. I was hooked, no doubt. While BfA has gotten a bit stale and repetitive for me lately, I still sub every so often to catch up on the story. Classic will be the same for me I think, pretty casual, but I am so glad they are finally doing it. Thanks for all the Classic videos, yours are the best I have come across. There are far too many over-hype, scream casting RUclipsrs out there, so finding your relaxed and detailed content is a great breath of fresh air.
I love the series. Since I'm a terribly late joiner (Legion), I'd love to see the history of every patch, including Classic, Burning Crusade and Wrath, when new zones, dungeons and raids were added and that stuff.
I remember something about the Booty Bay AH being diffrent, because it was a neutral town's AH. Both Horde and Alliance could place items in there to be sold. And being so could not be attached to the other AH. Think I remember Booty Bay AH took a larger cut of the profits too if you did not have your rep up.
i also remember traveling between cities checking the AH for different items, i was also 6 or 7 during vanilla so i cant remember if the AH's actually had different items, but i do remember checking the org AH then going over to TB to check things
100% Can confirm Auction houses were unlinked in the early days. All the players ended up focusing on one city as the main one. Org for Horde and Ironforge for Alliance as a result of this. The other capital cities were ghost towns until they were linked. I almost want to say this was the case at launch itself.
I remember that in the South Park Warcraft episode, Randy also played a human hunter and the reason why I saying this is that it's quite ironic that his character also wore a shield.
At release of Vanilla, Auction Houses were unlinked :) I remember on my warlock, I was buying shadow spell dmg / spell dmg pots for bgs between Org and TB!
I remember the un-linked auction houses as well, and I started playing during patch 1.7. I am almost positive that they changed it at the very tail-end of Vanilla - maybe it came with the BC pre-patch.
Still kind of bummed out that they took bucklers away from Rogues and Hunters, would have been cool to see how that would have evolved. Great video once again MadSeason, looking forward to more. Thanks.
Yes Auction houses were originally unlinked. Eventually they linked them BUT the neutral auction houses were still separate for obvious reasons. I am pretty sure the neutral action house is gone now tho
How are you able to get your own WoW Vanilla/Classic footage and alter certain stats like health and mana? I have seen a few of your videos that show that some stats were manually altered, and with Classic or Vanilla not here, how did you do that? Im curious!
I swear that only IF and ORG had AH through all of Vanilla but can't find anything on that. I can't even find when they were re-added, as you said they were taken out in .9 leaving just the two. I had the same bearenstein thought.
I could be wrong, but I swear I remember seeing alliance and horde camps in Azshara but they only had boxes and banners, no npcs. Could have just been remnants of the zone being left unfinished cause they didn’t have those BG tunnel caves, but I was always like “it must be for Azshara crater!” When I was younger
Yep that's how it eventually worked I believe. I think it capped out at 50, and then slowly went down over time. I remember I burned quite a bit of gold switching from pve/pvp on my rogue all the time.
@@madseasonshow yeah, I got in mid vanilla, and things kept changing. even did a few battlegrounds for gear. BC sorted out so much. Alas my full season 2 pvp gear was useless when Wrath came out. I really am enjoying this series.

Unlinked AHs were absolutely in Vanilla. I remember them being a huge PITA, and decided to only use Org until they finally linked them.
Im curious!
I don't remember the unlinked AH. I remember that there was only 1 for each faction, and they added other AHs later though.
Could have just been remnants of the zone being left unfinished cause they didn’t have those BG tunnel caves, but I was always like “it must be for Azshara crater!” When I was younger
i love how he has the audio from Kakariko village from Zelda as his background music
4:30 I seem to recall that 1st re-spec was cheap, then got more expensive each time?
Really enjoying the series.
Auction house < Bazaar ... Shocked you didn't bring that up haha
Oh boy, these funny little moments are so good. 6:00
